Internal Disk Error - 3rd Generation Time Capsule

HI all,
I have read many of the discussion points relating to the "Internal Disk Error" on a Time Capsule and the need to take it to pieces, extract the drive and use DiskWarrior or similar to restore the data.
I use my TC as a backup drive, so although the data was important I didn't need to recover it.  I have connected it via a caddy and erased it.  The drive is perfectly viewable on my Mac via USB in the caddy.
When I have reconnected it all (correctly) in the TC and connected to it the "Internal Disk Error" remains.  The TC therefore still doesnt work as a backup drive just an expensive wireless Access Point.
Any ideas, as I could really do with the drive backing up my Mac again....

The Gen3 finished production June 2011 but most are older than that. It does suggest all of them are over 2.5 years.
Do you have a computer still running 5.6 utility.. that will give you a lot more info??
Gen 3 has a bunch of faults caused by the failing ceramic caps.
See https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/new-issue-with-a1355-gen-3-tc
The ones with Flextronics power supplies are probably more fragile than the Delta.. did yours have a black plastic coated power supply or was it translucent plastic??
That is why I suggest using it via USB as it will not load the power supply as badly.

  • How to set up 6th Generation AirPort Extreme to cable modem as a wireless router and then connect my 3rd Generation Time Capsule to AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender?

What is the best way to set up my 6th Generation AirPort Extreme (A1521) to my cable modem as a wireless router and then connect my 3rd Generation Time Capsule (A1355) to my AirPort Extreme as a wireless extender? I live in a small 1 story house and I currently have the Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem in the living room and the Time Capsule plugged into the wall in my bedroom. I am able to wirelessly connect to the internet using the AirPort Extreme as my router and I can also do wireless back ups to my Time Capsule. My problem is that my connection seems to be really slow! My 1TB Time Capsule back up is only half way complete and it has been 3 days! My computer has been backing up all day and night for almost 72 hours and its still not even 75% complete. I have backed up to this Time Capsule in the past and it never took this long. I am thinking that when I set up my AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule using AirPort Utility I must have set it up incorrectly or something.
How do I set up my Airport Extreme and Time Capsule for the fastest possible internet speed and back up speed?
    Thank you,

AirPort Utility 5.6 works with AirPort Extreme 802.11g base stations.
It works with N version airports.
It will also show details of the AC model but cannot be used for the setup.. mostly.
I purposely got the new 6th Gen Airport Extreme so my internet connection would be a lot faster!
Your network will be much faster when you have AC client directly connected to the AE. Older client will go no faster.. but what is worse.. extend wireless is mixing new and old wireless standards.. guess what one wins.. OLD.. So when you extend wireless.. you have no improvement whatsoever. This whole post is about extending wireless.. so you cannot extend to older equipment and do any better.. maybe slightly better signal although from your comments that isn't happening either.
I would rather not have to use an ethernet at all with the TC and I don't know EOP adapters are!
If you do not use ethernet then you are going to be forced to accept slow speed.
EOP (ethernet over power). Also called homeplug in the US.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HomePlug
Provides a method of networking over power cabling that already exists in your house.
So what your saying is for the fastest internet speed and back up speed possible I should keep my Airport Extreme plugged into my Modem and keep my TC set up as a wireless extender? Then when I want to do back ups I should plug an ethernet cable from my TC to my MacBook Pro?
    To spell this out.
A wireless link to an extended device will go very slowly.. if it is not direct.
So lets say you have a laptop sitting in the lounge.. Your connection goes.. Laptop- - - - - AE- - - - -TC.
That means two wireless links.. wireless has this nasty half duplex and single channel nature.. it can send or receive (Tx or Rx) but not at the same time.
Ethernet by contrast does both at once. It is full duplex.
Wireless can talk to one client at a time.. so if there are multiple items using wireless lets say 4 devices.. then your computer gets a 25% time slice. Since wireless cannot handle multiple simultaneous connections.
Ethernet by contrast can connect multiple computers to multiple destinations at the same time.. all transmitting and receiving at full speed.
When you put all this together.. there are a couple of rules for fast connection.
    1. Use ethernet at all times. Where you cannot use ethernet use anything but wireless.. eg EOP (homeplug) at least to try and get rid of wireless.
    2. Where you must use wireless use it sparingly and make sure it is never more than one hop.. ie never have an extend wireless (repeater is more usual term). Repeater will cause instant slowdown of 50% and maybe up to 75% just because it is so inefficient.
    3. Fastest wireless is 5ghz but it has very short range.. you need to be up close and personal to get it working.
Apple routers however unless you do manual setup I suggest are set to connect to best signal strength not best speed. It will therefore use 2.4ghz at 25% less speed than 5ghz because it is 1db better signal.. this madness means you need to setup manually for the best setup.

  • "internal disk space needs repair" Time Capsule error message

I had successfully transfered my entire iTunes library to my TC. Worked without a hitch for a week.
Today, I downloaded an album FROM iTunes. In the middle of the download, it froze. I noticed I was dismounted and my TC light had turned orange (now blinking) and I received the mesage "internal disk space needs repair."
From what I've read on this board, I'm supposed to reformat my TC and start again. That's an unacceptable solution. Is there another way?
Also does anyone have experience in archiving their TC? And will that preserve my precious (to me anyway) iTunes library?

If you don't understand something, ask!
Your backups are in a +sparse bundle+ on your Time Capsule's internal HD. That's what appears on your desktop and/or Finder sidebar when Time Machine is doing a backup (unless you've told the Finder not to show them). If it currently appears, just eject it, then right-click the TM icon in your Dock and select +Back Up Now.+
For the +TM Buddy+ widget, click your mouse on the words "Click here" in my previous post (anything on these forums that's shown in blue or purple, and is underlined when your mouse passes over it, is a "clickable link" -- clicking on it will take you to that web page.
On that page, click the Download button towards the upper right. That will download and install it. Then press whatever key or mouse button you have set up for Dashboard and select +Time Machine Buddy.+ You'll see a display like the one pictured on the web page.
If it doesn't show the box with messages, click the "disclosure" triangle to the left of the word Messages. That should show the messages for the last backup attempt. Click in the message area, and it should be outlined in blue (as shown on the web page). Then click Cmd-A to +Select All+ (and the whole background will turn blue), then Cmd-C to Copy to your clipboard.
Then come here to post a reply, and when this box is outlined in blue, press Cmd-V (or select Edit > Paste from the menubar) to paste the messages here.

  • USB on 3rd generation Time Capsule-Add external HD?

    Hello,
I have a Time Capsule 1TB 3rd generation that's near capacity. Can i add an external HD to the USB interface to increase it's capacity? If so, is it using RAID 0?

You can add a USB hard drive to the port on the Time Capsule and you will have another network hard drive for storage.
But, this drive will be separate from the Time Capsule drive.
The drive that you add will NOT act like it is part of the Time Capsule in any way. It is just another hard drive connected to your network.

  • Can I plug a power line adapter into my 3rd generation Time Capsule?

I want to extend my network in our two-story house and want to use a power line adapter.  Can I plug this Time Capsule into my router THEN plug the power line adapter into the Time Capsule?  As a follow-up question, can I just use the Time Capsule as an external hard drive and connect it directly to my iMac to use Time Machine?

    Yes to both questions.
Normally you would plug the EOP adapter into the router and plug the other end of the EOP adapter into a power point on the other floor and into the TC running in bridge. You would then test that it works.. we can never guarantee 100% that EOP will connect.. it depends on the power circuit wiring in the house.. type of fuse box used.. loads of stuff that can effect it.. but if it works you should have no issues with it.
To plug the TC directly into the computer is possible albeit a bit messy.
    See instructions in this thread.
Using Time Capsule hardwired to Mac for back-up only.
BUT.. let me also add.. on an iMac.. I would strongly recommend you plug in an external drive.. fastest you can afford depending on model iMac you have.. if it is 2012 with USB3 the answer is made for you.. USB3 drives are cheap, fast, reliable. On 2011 you have thunderbolt which is super expensive.. but fast.. FW800 which is dead (don't tend to buy dead ducks) or USB2. USB2 is much the slowest interface. HOWEVER.. it is still faster than a TC connected by Gigabit due to Network overheads and slow disk speed in the TC. TM is more reliable backing up to local drives.
Thunderbolt hubs are getting cheaper.. and if you have thunderbolt to USB3 in a hub.. plus a USB3 drive it is about the same price as thunderbolt drive.. the advantage is all the other ports you get into the bargain.

  • 3rd generation time capsule and an airport express.

I have the above and trying to use the airport express I removed it from the wired network to extend the wireless network. I have now managed to lose both express and time capsule. Airport utility is unable to discover either device. Please help!!!

Yes, the signal strength will be extended by the AirPort Express. The ideal location for the Express would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and area that needs more wireless coverage.
The reason for this is that the Express can only "extend" the signal bandwidth that it receives. If you locate it too far from the Time Capsule, then it will not receive a strong signal to extend.

  • My 2nd generation Time Capsule won't back up because the backup disk is full??

My 2nd generation Time Capsule-Machine won't back up because the backup disk is full. Ever since the latest OS software update I am not able to erase my time capsule and start over. I use to be able to go into the settings on my Mac and erase it and start over, but not anymore. What can I do? Is there a way to free up space so I can do backups again? I keep getting a notice saying that my backup disk is full and there is not enough space to to a backup for all 3 of my Macs. Any suggestions would help!!! Thanks

The airport utility should still allow you to erase the drive of the TC.. that means a full wipe.. if you want to keep anything from the old backups you should archive it first.. that option was removed on the v6 utility but if any of your computers still runs Lion or earlier you can download 5.6 airport utility or use the inbuilt one.
In mountain lion you cannot install the 5.6 utility but there are ways and means of getting around that.. it does work.. it is relatively easy to unpack the utility and extract the file and just drag it to the utility directory.

What if my error message is the following:  The backup disk image “/Volumes/********'s Time Capsul/****’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use. (I have redacted the name of the computer with asterixes)

    This is a complex procedure.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a minute or two
Plug the power cord back in to the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the issue 98% of the time. If you are in the unlucky 2% category, more help is here from Pondini, the Time Machine guru:

  • I BEG of you:  How do I replace an Airport Extreme base station with a 4th-generation Time Capsule as the base station?

I'll be damned if I can figure this out.  I have a new late-2012 iMac (OS 10.8.3) connecting to my LAN via Airport wi-fi.  (It will be Ethernet-connected, as soon as a hole is drilled into my new work table, but right now the Ethernet cable doesn't reach.)  My wife uses a 2011 MacBook Air.
The LAN consists of a flying-saucer-looking Airport Extreme connected by Ethernet to the modem, plus 2 old Airport Expresses.  I have an Ethernet switch too, through which I've got a TV connected and a printer connected.
I bought a 4th-generation Time Capsule about a year ago, but couldn't figure out for the life of me how to replace the Airport Extreme with it.  I became so incredibly frustrated that I hid it away in a closet until now.  I  just tried again, with the same results.  I've got both Airport Utility 5.6 (to use with the old Extreme and Expresses) and Airport Utility 6.2.  I was using version 6.2 to set up the Time Capsule... or to try to.  Once again, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it!  I tried so many different Ethernet wiring connections that I now cannot remember them well enough to describe them here.
I distinctly remember that, when I tried this a year ago with my wife's MacBook Air and Airport Utility 6.2, I was presented at one point with the question whether I wanted to replace an existing base station with the Time Capsule I was trying to set up, but this time I never was presented with that option.
Is there anyone who can, in essence, hold my hand and walk me through this process step-by-step?  At this point I even need to be instructed what to wire to what.  I feel like a total incompetent.
My MOST sincere thanks in advance for help!
(I hope Time Capsule is the correct forum for this question.  I considered the Airport forum as well, but I don't want to cross-post.)
(And, just to complicate matters, after I get this done-- assuming I ever do-- I want to use the old Airport Extreme on the outside of the house to extend the range of my LAN to the back yard... but that's for another day entirely.)

    apikoros wrote:
The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

I just bought hte new ac time capsule (TC), and was using the 1st generation one at home.

=> the new TC is used with Time Machine for encrypted backup and first high speed network

  • 1st Generation Time Capsule reset button broke

Hello everyone I have a 1st Generation Time Capsule 500gb that I purchased used and do not have the password for AND
    the reset button   is BROKEN!!!
Is there anyway to reset it without the rest button working??
I bought it to upgrade it to a 2TB drive that i already own .
    Thank you guys !!!!!!!

When you open the TC to replace the hard disk you will be able to press the reset. You might also be able to fix the reset lever arm.. I have found them simply forced so far back it was bent.. and no longer able to go back.. once inside the box,  I can bend it back to the correct position.. but it is a plastic hinge.. and no plastic hinge likes being bent at any time.. If it has snapped right off, or snaps off attempting repair don't worry about it.. once reset, just keep it at default or write the password on a sticker and place it on the bottom.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Apple_Time_Capsule
Please pay attention though to Bob's comments.. fixing the power supply is going to be necessary in the near future. Especially if you put in a large drive with high start current for the hard disk. There are lots of people who find the upgrade of the hard disk is closely followed by power supply failure or it won't even start the new hard disk.. depending on type and current demand. It is much much more for some disks even if the drive has lower consumption.
If you are a DIYer it is not expensive to fix power supply or better replace it.
Although I have suggested several repair methods this is probably the cheapest.

  • 306 Error Printing with Time Capsule 2TB

I just upgraded from a 1st Generation Time Capsule (500GB) to a 4th Generation Time Capsule (2TB).  I have a Canon MP600 printer connected via USB to the Time Capsule.  In my previous setup, this worked flawlessly and other computers on the network could print to this device.  With the new setup, I'm receiving a 306 Error printing to the printer via the new Time Capsule.
    I have:
    Reset the printer system information.
Rest the TC to default settings, attached the USB for the printer, and restarted the device.
Tested the USB direct connection to my printer (works fine).
I feel like this has to be related to the new TC...wondering if I've got a setting mixed up.
Any help would be great - I've reviewed most of the postings related to this subject, but this one feels different as it involves an upgrade to new TC and I'm not trying to use a wireless printer.

First, restart your MacBook Pro and your Time Capsule. This solves the problem in most of the cases.
    If it doesn't work, see > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html

Time Capsule error 22 - My time capsule was working fine and didn't notice anything wrong with it until it stopped backing up about two weeks ago. I never changed anything like computer names or the Airport settings. All I get is the following:
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Linda's Computer 1.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22).
I tried resetting the Time Capsule and connecting with an ethernet cable, although the Ariport Utility says everything is working fine through WiFi.

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.
