Internal disk not recognized, booting in safe mode fails too.

My computer was fine, randomly froze, so I held down the power till it shut down.
Since then I only get the grey screen when I try to start Mac OS up on the internal drive. I tried to repair the internal drive or start from it using the installation CD, but it doesn't recognize my internal HD drive anywhere. When there's no disk and I have the grey screen, the computer also makes a small, "booop, click, click, click" sound. Don't know if that helps but that's what I've got.
I've also tried starting the computer in safe mode. That fails and tells me something about the disk being immediately dependent on something. If it helps I can do it again and try to write it down.
Any help would be great thanks.

Hi AveryBazan & welcome to discussions...
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

My Power Mac G5 will not fully boot without safe mode, it only comes to a blue screen where my cursor duplicates in to 2, (one is frozen, one can move by moving the mouse). What is my problem, and how do I fix it?

    Great clue Lukas...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Boot in safe mode fails

Since installing iTunes 11.1 on iMac and iOS 7 on iPhone 5 and iPad 3 the computer has crashed with increasing frequency. Verified hard drive and no problems reported. Now I can't even boot in safe mode - it fails half way through - grey progress bar disappears, then cog disappears and am left with white screen. Any suggestions?

Boot into recovery mode (CMD+R), launch Disk Utility, repair the disk and its permissions. If that doesn't do the trick, reinstall the OS and rerun Software Update.

  • Help, blank screen will not even boot in safe mode!

    Model name: A505-S6960, model: PSAPOU-007007.
I know I got some error but I can't remember I turned the power off and when I powered it up again nothing!  I can't even boot it in safe mode I just get black screens.  I have NO IDEA what to do. Help

1.)try this first. remove the battery and power cable and hold the power button for at lest 30 second. plug the power cord back in and see if it starts. if not same as before but put just the battery back in and try it. if not same thing but put battery and power cord back in and try it.
2.)they havent come with a recovery disc for a few years now. there is a recovery partition on your hard drive that you are supposed to make the recovery media from when you first get it. if you didnt make these discs you will have to call toshiba at (800) 457-7777 to get a set. they will run you about $25 for shipping but the discs are free.
    hope that helps

  • Can not boot in safe mode or from install disk

Having major issues. MBP getting stuck at a blue screen after the gray apple screen. Tried pressing and holding shift key while starting for safe mode and still goes to blue screen. Tried holding c key and starting with sl install disk in drive and still goes to blue screen. Issue started with continous cycle back to login screen from my main user account and due to my stupidity of turning on automatic login from a admin test account (thinking I could trick it), I am now in this vicious cycle.
And no I don't have a bootable clone. I just updated to SL and like an lazy idiot didn't go ahead and make my bootable clone.
FYI I do have a timecapsule with a week old or so backup.
    Any suggestions?

having a time capsule with TM backups is certainly good. you can always restore your system from it in a pinch.
do you have a firmware password set perhaps? it would preclude booting in safe mode or from the dvd using "c". reboot and hold option at the chime. this should boot you into startup disk manager where you can choose to boot from the DVD.
if you do have a firmware password set it will ask you to enter the firmware password before letting you use the startup disk manager.

  • My MacBook Pro 13 inch makes a clicking noise from the hard drive and can not start up in safe mode and normal. I then ran disk utility in recovery mode and disk utility shows no problems with the hard drive. What is the problem?

Please help me, I have a mid 2010 Mac book pro with a toshiba mk3266gsxf harddrive. It started making a clicking noise and then my computer crashed. I proceeded to boot in safe mode, but it doesn't work. When I ran disk utility in recovery mode, it showed no problem with my disk. Does any one know what the problem is?

Sounds like a mechanical problem with the drive and it ruined the sectors where the Macintosh HD partition (and OS X, and files and programs) reside, but not your Recovery HD partition.
If you held command option r while booting, that's Internet Recovery and it's loaded via the Internet, not via the Recovery HD partition on the boot drive, so that could mean the drive is dead mechanically or there is another issue.
In either case the drive will likely have to be replaced, it's a matter of what occured to where and the drive state if you can recover data or not. If you made recent backups then your fine.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

    (10.6.8 Intel core duo 2009)
    Hi,
I have a grey screen and grey rotating wheel startup probs. I have tried repairing with the disk utility, resetting PRAM, booting in safe mode (which gave a subset of the errors that 'disk repair' did- namely- 'invalid sibling link, invalid record count, invalid node structure, invalid key length)  and finally trying to get to archive&install the o/s, but it cannot find the destination volume. Is an erase the only option? PS I have backed up most files individually, but my daughter did not back up any from her user account. Any help would be appreciated. J

  • Can't boot in safe mode - RAID startup disk

    hi ..
my macpro has a mirrored RAID as a startup disk (using HD bay 1 & 2) ... i am trying to boot into safe mode but this does not work at all, even when holding down the shift key it starts up in normal user mode.
Is there a way to do this ? is it maybe possible to boot into safe mode with a terminal command ? or any other way ?
thx for any help with this ...

    Hallo
This topic is quite old, but I face exactly the same issue.
My MacPro tries to boot in safe mode, but restarts and boots in normal mode afterwards.
There are messages in system.log that indicate to me that the kernel exensions on the boot helper volumes are different from the ones on the main partition:
    Dec 19 21:06:11 localhost kernel[0]: Got boot device = IOService:/AppleACPIPlatformExpert/PCI0@0/AppleACPIPCI/SATA@1F,2/

    Dec 19 21:06:17 localhost kextd[11]: in-memory mkext doesn't match on-disk mkext; non-boot kexts won't be loaded
    I tried:
    sudo kextcache -v 6 -f -u /
Which updates the kernel extensions on the boot helper volume,
    but it does not work.
As for the firware updates, I could still install those booting from external FW disk.

  • HT201262 Will not boot into safe mode

    Hello,
My MacBook pro 2012 crashed last night. Could not force quite so closed it down. On restart it would get halfway then stop. I have japped p-ram (I know it is my called this anymore) but then loads halfway and the turns off. I booted into disk repair and it found a couple of problems so repaired successfully. On restart it still gets halfway then turns off.
From reading the apple support it seems other people have the same problem. All mention booting into safe mode. For the life of me I cannot get my machine to boot into safe mode!
I do exactly like the instructions say but it always just goes to the page where I choose whether to log in as me or a guest.
    What am I doing wrong?!
I am on a MacBook pro running Yosemite.
    Many thanks for any help.
    Chris.

Why won't my g4 desktop come on. I was trying to boot in safe mode and it would not go in safe mode. It won't come back on anymore. Can some tell me what to do.

Try Single User mode (Command+S while starting up).
    Then, run fsck.
    At the command-line prompt type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:
** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OKIf fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
When fsck reports that your volume is OK, typerebootat the prompt and then press Return.
Your computer should start up normally and allow you to log in.

  • Not booting in Safe Mode

    Hi all,
I have problems with a G5 desktop machine running 10.4.11. Disk Utility came up with an error message "invalid sibling link".
Tried to boot G5 from Tiger install DVD. Did not boot from DVD. Tested drive with other DVD's, to make sure drive is OK.
Tried to boot in Safe Mode, but after restart the spinning gear won't come up, even after holding down the Shift key for > 10 minutes. Fans run like crazy. Startup stalls showing grey screen with Apple logo.
    What can I do?

You could try booting in single user mode, then write in the
appropriate command (text) to restart normally. Or maybe
there is a command to have it run SafeBoot while in single
user. Seems to me there is a similar result available when
a command line is used; however I do not know this stuff.
boot in single user and restart 10.4 - google search
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=bootin+single+user+and+restart10.4&btnG=Search
There are a few support documents and other information
in the above search result link.
There may be a way to get your computer's attention
by starting up and resetting PRAM on startup, by
holding Opt, command, R , P until the machine chimes
three times, then let go of these. Could also be some
other issues where the power management unit may
be corrupted and a reset of the PMU may be needed.
So many choices; but to find the right one, this time!
    Good luck & happy computing!
PS: is your Discussions experience particularly slow today?

  • My Macbook Pro began crashing when I tried running safari. An error message came up asking that I repair the HD volume. Before I was able to run repair, computer shut down. Now I can not get it to boot. I tried booting in safe mode to no avail. Pls help.

Can someone please help me with a Macbook Pro booting question?
Recently, my mid 2010 MacBook Pro has started acting up when I am on Safari. Safari would unexpectedly crash multiple times in a row, then run fine for a while, then again, crash repeatedly. Not long after this began happening, an error message from my Prosoft Drive Genius 3 software, threw out a message that a serious error had occurred and I needed to repair the HD volume. Before I was able to run the software to repair the HD volume, the machine stopped working. I turned off the Macbook and when I tried to restart, it would not boot. I have since removed all external hardware from my machine and tried several times, unsuccessfully, to boot. I have also tried booting in safe mode when also does not work.
Any suggestions?  Thanks for your help.

    Try SMC reset:
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time. (four keys together)
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
