"Internal disk space low" warning question

Last night I got the blinking amber light with the warning that Time Capsule's "Internal disk space is low". My hard drive is 1TB and has 375 GB of remaining space. My time capsule is 1TB and is used only for backing up my computer. How do I remedy this situation? Shouldn't I still have 375 GB left on my Time Capsule if it's just mirroring my hard drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Bob, thank you for your answer! When will TC start deleting old backups and the green light come back again and amber light stop flashing?
I have the same problem and tried resolving it through deleting some backups that i did not need. I have 1Tb Time Capsule with all latest firmware and recently got the amber light blinking and the message that the "Internal disk space is low. Your Time capsule is low on storage space". I checked and I have something like 58 Gb left. So I deleted some big files that I did not really need on TC via Time Machine interface - "delete all backups of ...". It should have freed up additionally more than 100Gb, but when I checked again the remaining disk space has not changed from 58Gb. I read in forums about how to get this free space by compacting sparsebundle via "hdiutil compact..." command in terminal, as discussed here - http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=84284
Is this the only way to free space on TC? Is there an easier way to get it? Should I go for it or should I just wait until TC starts deleting old files, not to mess with the whole process?
Thank you in advance.

  • "internal disk space needs repair" Time Capsule error message

I had successfully transfered my entire iTunes library to my TC. Worked without a hitch for a week.
Today, I downloaded an album FROM iTunes. In the middle of the download, it froze. I noticed I was dismounted and my TC light had turned orange (now blinking) and I received the mesage "internal disk space needs repair."
From what I've read on this board, I'm supposed to reformat my TC and start again. That's an unacceptable solution. Is there another way?
Also does anyone have experience in archiving their TC? And will that preserve my precious (to me anyway) iTunes library?

If you don't understand something, ask!
Your backups are in a +sparse bundle+ on your Time Capsule's internal HD. That's what appears on your desktop and/or Finder sidebar when Time Machine is doing a backup (unless you've told the Finder not to show them). If it currently appears, just eject it, then right-click the TM icon in your Dock and select +Back Up Now.+
For the +TM Buddy+ widget, click your mouse on the words "Click here" in my previous post (anything on these forums that's shown in blue or purple, and is underlined when your mouse passes over it, is a "clickable link" -- clicking on it will take you to that web page.
On that page, click the Download button towards the upper right. That will download and install it. Then press whatever key or mouse button you have set up for Dashboard and select +Time Machine Buddy.+ You'll see a display like the one pictured on the web page.
If it doesn't show the box with messages, click the "disclosure" triangle to the left of the word Messages. That should show the messages for the last backup attempt. Click in the message area, and it should be outlined in blue (as shown on the web page). Then click Cmd-A to +Select All+ (and the whole background will turn blue), then Cmd-C to Copy to your clipboard.
Then come here to post a reply, and when this box is outlined in blue, press Cmd-V (or select Edit > Paste from the menubar) to paste the messages here.

  • I tried creating a startup backup via Disk Utility.  There wasn't enough space and now I have no internal disk space. How do I fix this?

I used DIsk Utility to create a startup backup clone for the first time yesterday.  I cloned it to my internal drive on my Mac.  I let it run all night and when I woke up this morning it showed it as failed (not enough disk space).  Now when I boot up my Mac, it showed a warning at the login screen (not enough disk space at startup).  I do not have an external hard drive (which is why I chose to backup internally).  Do I need to purchase one?
It still allows me to log in.  When I open Finder and look at my internal drive, it shows less than 100.00 MB space available.  I tried deleting a bunch of old files and stripped needless apps.  However, it keeps showing my computer as having less than 100 MB of storage.
Is there a way to find the failed clone backup and delete it?  I tried looking in Spotlight for the backup clone (I named it 4-21-14.dmg).  I cannot find the file.  I was hoping to backup my files so I can install OS Mavericks on my computer (mid-2010 Macbook Pro), but I do not have enough free space.

I solved the problem by deleting over 100 gb of files and apps.  I would have rather not gone that route, but having less than 100 MB of storage is an unacceptable headache to deal with.  Now I have to decide on whether to try again with the backup internally route or risk it and download/install Mavericks.

  • Disk space low!!

my disk space on my TC is low. any ideas on how to get that cleaned up?
I just added an external 2T G-Drive - I put all my movies, music, and photos there (not on my iMac anymore). These are the things that I want to back up, but now that it's on my external I can't figure out how to add that location to be backed up in time machine.
    any ideas?
The other thing is that I have a 500G TC. now that I have a 2T external is it even possible to back this up?
    help?

my disk space on my TC is low. any ideas on how to get that cleaned up?
Are you using the internal hard drive on your TC for Time Machine (TM) backups only? If so, TM will purge the oldest backups to make room for more.

Sorry, but TM cannot backup network drives so you would need another backup solution if you want to back up this external drive.

  • TM eats up internal disk space while it backs up externally

I started the morning at work with 18GB free on my internal hard disk. After a morning of running Time Machine, I noticed that I only had 2GB left on the internal drive. Pretty soon I could watch as the backup process added about 1GB every five minutes to my internal drive. Meanwhile, it seemed to be backing up to the hard drive as normal. Finally, it had filled up my entire internal drive so that I had literally 0k remaining.
I have never set my internal drive as the backup location. I wouldn't even know how.
AppleCare tells me to erase and restore to fix the problem, but that still won't get back my precious internal hard disk space. Where was TM putting all that junk, and how can I get rid of it????

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You may have the "Doppelganger" folder problem. Turn Time Machine OFF.
From a Finder window, select +Go > Go to Folder,+ then type /Volumes in the prompt.
That should show all your internal and external drives. They should all be Aliases, of either 4 KB or zero size.
Anything that isn't an alias, but is an actual folder, delete it and empty the trash. You'll probably have to enter your Admin password.
If that's no help, do the +Go to Folder+ again, then type /Var/log in the prompt.
You may have some huge files there; delete them and empty the trash.

  • Internal disk space is low

I'm getting this error message on a 1TB time capsule that is connected to an imac with about 700gb on it. I can't find anything that tells me what to do to fix this other than delete everything on the capsule and start again.
I assumed the time machine system would make space by deleting older stuff but this doesn't seem to be the case. Is there any way to set this up?
    Thanks

  • Windows 7 Professional - Disk Space low on 32gb partition?

    Hi.
I have successfully gone through the Boot Camp Assistant, created a 32gb partition and installed my new copy of Windows 7.
After the usual couple of reboots Windows runs fine but the problem is the amount of space Windows C: drive is showing me as available to use. Like I said, this partition is 32gb and the red bar is almost full! It says I have only 2.33gb remaining!!
It took me 2 attempts to get windows installed and working properly (i'm a first time mac user and have no experience using bootcamp)... so upon failing the first time I rebooted into Lion, opened Boot Camp Assistant and removed Windows before my second attempt, maybe this has damaged the disk?
My spec if it's of any use...
    Mac OS X Version 10.7.3
    27-inch - 3.4 GHz i7
    16gb DDR3 - Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB
Thanks for any advice or solutions, I'm a noob in need of help.
    Craig

In theory and posted by Microsoft, which I find to be next to impossible:
    16GB for 32-bit
    why that does not work:
    page file 4-16GB
hibernation file - size of physical RAM and useful to have and use
    20GB for core Windows
    10GB just to apply updates
    3-6GB for minimum programs
3-5GB for cache, temp and icons etc
    any data or large programs
    free space to run properly
SSD need room for TRIM and month' worth of writes and for Background Garbage
60GB and no less for Windows 7 Pro 64-bit

  • How to migrate from my old MacBook Pro to a new one with less disk space and an external hard drive?

I have just bought a new MacBook Pro and an external hard drive.
Yet I have problems migrating data from my old MacBook Pro (more internal disk space with around 500 GB data) to my new one (internal disk space less than 500 GB).
I have connected all 3 devices but it seems the Migration Assistant does not have an option for us to select to migrate to an external hard drive.
Any other way to do it?

  • Error msg when I compact: The folder 'Inbox' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify you have enough disk space, and have write privileg

I recently had my computer serviced. I re-downloaded Thunderbird (getting a newer version), and retrieved my saved email. Now, Thunderbird keeps asking me to compact, but when I do, I get this error message:
The folder 'Inbox' could not be compacted because writing to folder failed. Verify that you have enough disk space, and that you have write privileges to the file system, then try again.
Obviously, since I'm getting mail all the time, I have write privileges, and disk space. The question is whether there's a setting I need to specify, or whether Thunderbird is writing to a special partition that may have gotten write-protected when my computer was in the hospital - or whether this is related to a known bug.
    All help appreciated.

The only know bug I can see is probably your anti virus is trying to scan the file when the new inbox is created leaving Thunderbird to think the file was not created.
As an experimental / diagnostic process. Restart the machine in safe mode with networking using Microsoft instructions for [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7] then try the compact. If it works I was most likely right. If it does not, another idea must surface.

  • Why Oracle Linux 5 cannot recover disk space after delete files ?

    Folks,
Hello. When I create a Virtual Machine for Oracle Linux 5 to install EBS R12, I allocate 300GB to the VM. I download EBS R12 Source Files (45.7GB) and unzip the files (46GB). Total size of stage area directory(EBS_R12) is 91.7GB.
Because some files are corrupted and cannot install, I move the folder EBS_R12 into trash but cannot empty trash. I move EBS_R12 from trash back to the directory. Then at root user, use command "rm -rf " to delete EBS_R12 completely.
I shut down Oracle Linux 5 and restart it, 91.7GB disk space cannot recover.
I download some other files into Oracle Linux files and then delete those files, but disk space cannot be recovered either.
It seems that OEL5 virtual disk only can expand but cannot be reduced. The VM disk space is less than 200GB now and not enough to install EBS R12.
Can any folks tell me how to make 91.7GB disk space and some more disk space come up ?

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
Host OS is Windows 7, Guest OS is Oracle Linux 5 on the top of VMPlayer 3. The VM of Oracle Linux 5 is created on the external USB drive and not on the local hard disk.
There is a directory /tmp/VMwareDnd/376c7cae/EBS_R12 in Oracle Linux 5 file system. I copy/Paste the folder of EBS_R12 from Windows 7 into Oracle Linux 5. All of zip files and unzipped files are placed in the folder of EBS_R12.
After EBS_R12 is deleted, the external USB drive(F:) doesn't come up 91.7GB disk space.
    My question is:
Where to run "boot>linux rescue" command ?
Does this command work correctly in the external USB drive ?

  • Incorrect disk critically low error in LR 3.3

I have Lightroom 3.3 on a Windows 7 x64 machine. It's started to throw a disk critically low warning every few days for the drive that has my LR catalog on it. The drive has 390GB free
Has anyone else seen this before? Is it a known issue? How do I make it go away?
    Thanks,
    Neil

Just powered my machine on from sleep and Lightroom had this message up again. Which made me wonder... does it have anything to do with waking the machine from sleep? But alas, no. I tried to reproduce the problem by going to sleep with LR open and then waking the machine again, but the message didn't come up.
Anyone have any other ideas for how to chase the cause of this down? There are currently no files in the recycle bin and 393GB free on the drive.

  • [INS-32021] Insufficient disk space on this volume for the selected Oracle

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC Grid using Installer whose location is: /home/.../grid/runInstaller.
I am on step 4 of 8 in the Wizard whose contents are as follows:
    Oracle Base: /u01/11g_grid
    Software Location: /u01/app/grid
    Cluster Registry Type: ASM
    OSASM Group: dba
When click "next" button I got this error:
" [INS-32021] Insufficient disk space on this volume for the selected Oracle home
Cause - The selected Oracle home was on a volume without enough disk space.
Action - Choose a location for Oracle home that has enough space (minimum of 3,017MB) or free up space on the existing volume. "
I test my "home" directory using the command: [ora11g@rac1 home]$ df -k
    Its Ouput:
    Filesystem: /dev/sda1 and tmpfs
    1K-blocks: 20,308,020 and 848,184
    Used: 18,888,968 and 0
    Available: 370,816 and 848,184
    Use: 99% and 0%
    Mounted on : / and /dev/shm
I run another command: [ora11g@rac1 u01]$df -k and got the same output as above.
    My questions are:
First, is "Oracle home" the directory "/home/..." or the directory "/u01/..." ?
Second, how to increase the space for the correct directory to be over 3017MB (Minimum) ?
    Thanks.

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2).The Virtual Disk for each VM is 20 GB whose raw device is /dev/sda (partition /dev/sda1 is the same size).
In order to install Grid Infrastructure, I add 5 Hard Disks into the first VM rac1 and 10GB for each Hard Disk. Then create 5 ASM disks respectively as a Disk Group. Let me describe them as follows:
    OS Phyysical file: C:\VM_RAC\sharerac\asmdisk1.vmdk (asmdisk2.vmdk asmdisk3.vmdk asmdisk4.vmdk asmdisk5.vmdk)
Corresponding raw devices: /dev/sdb (sdc sdd sde sdf)
    Corresponding partition: /dev/sdb1 (sdc1 sdd1 sde1 sdf1)
    Corresponding ASM disk: ASMDISK1 (ASMDISK2 ASMDISK3 ASMDISK4 ASMDISK5)
When I run Grid installer step 5 of 8, I select all of 5 ASMDISK as ASM disk group on step 5 of 8 in the Wizard.
The clusterware files are supposed to be stored in the ASM disk group.
But it seems that on step 4 of 8 in the Wizard, the installer install the Oracle Home /u01 into VM rac1 Hard Disk /dev/sda1 and get the above error message - not enough disk space.
    My questions are:
First, Why does the Installer store Oracle Home /u01 in /dev/sda1 because it should be in the Disk Group /dev/sdb1 (sdc1 sdd1 sde1 sdf1) ?
Second, Does the Installer go wrongly ?
Third, How to have the Installer store the clasterware files in ASM Disk Group ?
    Thanks.

  • Slightly OT: Video Disk Space Calculator app now available

    Hi all,
I'm an FCP editor who works in a lot of different codecs, so I quite often need to know the disk space needed for a length of footage in a certain one. I know there are a few apps (widgets I think) that do this, but I disable Dashboard and haven't found any others I like.
As a former programmer by trade, I figured this was a good reason to try learning Cocoa programming.. So, as my first project, I present Video Disk Space Calculator (OSX 10.3 and above, 49kb zip file).
It's a tiny little app that does two things - calculates hard drive space based on codec/length of footage, and displays/prints out a table of codecs and their data rates. It's completely free of course. I would REALLY appreciate feedback, I figure by correcting issues and adding features I'll learn more about Cocoa programming...

how about something similar for bitrates and various

    Thanks, glad it is useful.
I'll keep the bitrate and compression stuff in mind for Version 2 in the future. It's a good idea.

  • Warning about low disk space on drive E

    Hi,
I'm running Windows 7 on a HP Pavilion Elite HPE. My main drive i s C and there is also D (Factory image) and then the HP(E: ) one which is giving the warning about low disk space. When I look at what there is in drive E there is a folder called "my name"-PC with a lot of "Backup Set" folders/files in it, and then there is a folder called WindowsImageBackup and subfolder "my name"-PC.
I know I have to clean out these folders but I ma very insecure as to what I can delete.
I'd be very thankful if you could give me some advice in this matter!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

File History in Windows 7 is an extensive image backup of your drive which will steadily increase over time and needs to be cleared and suggest that you turn the feature off.  It is not very efficient.
If you wish to delete this  Windows Image Backup file, you should disable  the automatic backup feature of Windows.
Click on Start button > Control Panel > System and Maintenance> Backup and Restore.
In the left pane, click on "Turn Off Schedule".
From there you can delete the backup files on your E drive.
I also suggest as an alternative, use Macrium Reflect Free every so often as it is more efficient and reliable.  It will make a complete image back up of your entire hard drive to an external hard drive.  Don't forget to create a rescue disk.
Go to this site and do a Custom Install:
    http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
I personally use the Professional Edition which gives me more flexibility and features.
