Internal display dead, external display works fine

Hi,
I left my machine unplugged over the summer. When I came back, the internal display was dark.
The machine was making all the right noises at startup, and the Caps Lock key worked, and I could make it beep louder and softer with the volume F-keys, so I hooked it up to an external monitor. It works perfectly with the external monitor.
I went through the troubleshooting procedures - zap the pram, reset the power manager, boot from a CD - no video on the internal display.
While connected to the external monitor, I ran the System Information program and looked for the internal display device. It wasn't there! Only the external one shows up.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I can post screenshots or System Information reports if anyone wants them.
Thanks,
Doug

Someone took it off my hands. They're going to use it with an external display.
Thanks all!

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Radeon 6490M stalling MBP on internal display, running fine on ext. monitor

    Hi,
my early 2011 MBP (2,0 Ghz i7 - running OSX 10.8.2) started acting strangly a few days ago.
When I use the internal display at home, the machine will crash whenever tasks are handed over from the
Intel HD G 3000 to the Radeon 6490. However, when i plug the the MBP into it's external dispaly ( NEC EA 190M)
at work where is use it as a desktop in clamshell-mode, the MBP is working just fine.
I already thought i might be a problem with overheating or loose contacts between the GPU and the logicboard.
But then, why does it stall in desktop-mode but not in clamshell-mode?
    Any ideas?

    Hi Clinton,
I can tell from the systemreport, that the Radeon is driving the ext. display ( see screenshot):
That gives me a little hope, that the GPU isn't shot altogether.
No, I don't have the Apple Care Plan. Here in Europe we enjoy a two year manufacturer's liabilty by law. So unless you want a thrid year of warranty Apple Care doesn't makes that much sense here. I got my MBP in May 2011, so i'm good.

  • Thinkpad Twist s230U no internal display, works on HDMI and mini display port

    Hi,
My Thinkpad Twist does not display anything when turned on except on external monitors. The Device manager shows a greyed out internal display icon, says it is not connected.
    1. Could this be the power connect ribbon cable p/n DC002C003W00 have a fractured wire(s)? I have tested for open circuit between PWR1 and PWR2 connectors and there are 4 sequential pins which are open circuit. Is this normal?
    2. The touch screen works
    3. There appears to be absolutely no LED backlighting working
    4. Is there a possible fix for this and if so is it the power cables or some physical problem with the ribbon cables OR is it definitely a new display that is needed using existing cables?
    Thanks in advance
    Andrew

The last 4 pins on the connector are unused I have determined so it is not the power ribbon cable connector.
I found two wires fractured in the LCD ribbon cable right at the point where it feeds through the twist mount. I expect this could be a common problem after use. After repairing these two wires it did not fix the screen problem. I have ordered a replacement LDVS ribbon cable and will report back once I have replaced that.

  • 2006 MBP os 10.6.8 has stopped working w/Cinema Display - worked fine until 3 days ago

Hello. Hope someone can help. My MacBook Pro 2006 Snow Leopard has worked fine when connected to external Cinema display monitor (mirrored display setting) up until 3 days ago. Now the external display remains dark (I've tried on different monitors with same result). Initially, I could restart the MBP, and the external display would restart, but that only worked a couple of times and now nothing. The MBP seems to "see" the monitor when I open system preferences, but the display remains dark. the MBP display is fine. Is there anything i can do to correct this, or is the problem with the the MBP being so old? I have ordered a new MBP and would like to keep this one as a secondary machine, but would like to limit expense to fix if I can.

  • Clients fail to resolve local DNS names, external names working fine

    Hi there,
I've a strange issue with a couple of domain joined computers. Resolving internal and external host names works fine with nslookup. But clients loose AD connectivity because they can't resolve host names from the local DNS zones outside of nslookup.
    Pinging IP addresses always works.
So far only notebook computers are affected. Desktop computers work fine. OS is Windows 7/8/8.1 for clients and Windows Server 2008 R2/2012 for AD DCs/DNS servers.
    Example:
    C:\>nslookup bl-sphv00
    Server:  bl-spdc01.bl.local
    Address:  192.168.154.21
    Name:    bl-sphv00.bl.local
    Address:  192.168.154.10
    C:\>ping bl-sphv00
Ping request could not find host bl-sphv00. Please check the name and try again.
    C:\>ping bl-sphv00.bl.local
Ping request could not find host bl-sphv00.bl.local. Please check the name and t
    ry again.
    C:\>ping 192.168.154.10
Pinging 192.168.154.10 with 32 bytes of data:

    Hi there,
a Microsoft support guy send me a solution earlier posted under
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/f49b8398-d923-4e7e-86e7-78094113c091/problems-with-dns-and-ad?forum=winservergen
To get the client work again you just have to delete a few registry keys set by DirectAccess GPOs using this little batch:
    @echo off
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient\DnsPolicyConfig" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator\CorporateConnectivity" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Tcpip" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityAssistant\DTEs" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetworkConnectivityAssistant\Probes" /f
    reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters" /v SMB1NATCompatibilityLevel /f
Unfortunately this breaks the clients DirectAccess configuration and leaves me without a real solution. Found some hints here:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/tomshinder/archive/2010/03/13/uag-directaccess-group-policy-assignment-make-sure-the-right-policies-are-applied.aspx
So my question is now: How do i have to edit the wizard generated DirectAccess GPOs correctly?
    Anyone any idea?

  • Macbook screen won't work, but external monitor works fine...

Hey guys - are there any solutions out there for this problem that doesn't involve hundreds of dollars? A mate of mine spilled beer on a macbook - had to pay for it, I fired it up and everything works fine but the screen... Is there a way that I can check the connections or dry something off? Apple told the owner to throw it in the bin - but it works fine plugged into a monitor. The screen isn't cracked or chipped - all looks fine - I'm guessing that fluid had got into a connection somewhere. Help me Gurus!
    Cheers

Have you tried drying it without the back cover and upside down? l heard it worked for some guy

  • 2 thunderbolt displays worked fine daisy chained, moved one to work in other room, now only one will work.  both work independantly or both plugged into my macbook pro.

I have 2 thunderbolt displays and have had them daisy chained for months where I only would plug one into my macbook pro 15" retina and both displays have worked great.  The other day I moved one of them into the conference room, connected also a HDMI cord to a projector to do some work with staff on software design.
I brought my thunderbolt back into my office and plugged it back into the other thunderbolt dispay, then plugged the other display back into my macbook and started it up and now I can only get one to work daisy chained.  They both work great independantly or if both of them are plugged into my macbook pro, but not daisy chained any longer.
Is there a setting I need to look at to maybe reset so that my macbook pro will use both thunderbolt displays daisy chained?
Thanks for anyones advice and sharing any similar issues and how you fixed the issue.

    Hi there,
The first thing that I would recomend is resetting the PRAM on your portable.
OS X Mountain Lion: Reset your computer’s PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph11243
If the issues persist, then you may need to force the device to detect displays.
OS X Mountain Lion: About the Display pane of System Preferences
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5369
    How can I detect displays?
If the detect displays option is not available, hold down the Option key while you are in the Display pane.

  • Outlook 2013 people pane is not showing any items for internal domain users. External contacts works fine

I have recently purchase a new PC which has Windows 8.1, and Outlook 2013, connected to an exchange 2010 SP3 RU4 server.
In the People pane, the for External clients, then this box populates correctly, but for internal domain users, it shows "There are no items to show in this view"
On my OLD PC using XP, and Outlook 2010, connected to the SAME account, then people pane shows correctly for all users.
    Any help appreciated
    regards
    Chris

    Hi Chris,
I have checked in my Windows 8 and Outlook 2013 with Exchange 2010 SP3 RU4 environment. There are three folders listed under My Contact in my People pane:
Contacts: The contacts which we added and saved
    manually before.
Lync Contacts: The contacts we added in Lync.
    Suggested contacts folder: Automatically
keeps track of everyone you send a message to, but isn’t in your Outlook contacts. Please note that it is different from Auto-Complete List.
Therefore, I suppose that the meaning of “but for internal domain users, it shows ‘There are no items to show in this view’ ” is that there is no contacts in the
Contacts folder. Is it right? If I misunderstand, please point it out. And we need to add and save users manually in this folder.
    Thanks,

  • The audio quit working on my ipod. It's 4 yrs old but in great shape, never damaged. The display works fine. Is there any way to fix the audio?

    hj

If a reset and/or restore the device does not resolve the issue, it's likely hardware related.  Usually a sign of a damaged/faulty headphone jack.  You can set up yoru iPod for service either through Apple or a 3rd party repair company who can do the job for a little less.
Otherwise, if you consider yourself handy with small electronics, you can shop for the replacement part and swap it out yourself using the guides over at this site to walk you through the process.

  • 30" Display worked fine then a 'pop' and now nothing.

Has anyone else experienced this? This monitor has not been used heavily and has been well cared for. There has been no signs of malfinctioning at all and then suddenly this happend. It wasn't a loud pop and there was no smoke or smell as if something burned out.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks much
    Jon

Daniel - Yeah that is what I was planning on doing. I am expecting a shrug and "We don't sell them anymore" comment from them but we'll see.
Zachery - "Clocking the device?" "Go to a phoe repair place?" I'm confused as to what you are even talking about.

  • Problem importing with internal drive, but external drive works

    Hi,
I was importing a CD in iTunes and this one track refused to import, noises sounded like it couldnt read it, and i had cleaned it multiple times. Plugged in an external USB CD drive, and it worked straight away.
    Why is this?
    Thanks!
    J

I received a new hard drive and an enclosure today. However, when I plugged the new hard drive into the computer's internal SATA slot, the computer did not recognize that new hard drive. When I connected the new hard drive to the computer externally through the enclosure, the computer recognized it. Moreover, the computer also recognized my old hard drive when I connected it externally through the enclosure. So it seems that my problem does not reside in the hard drive, but in the SATA cable.
I wonder if there might be any probable reason other than bad cable? I am still able to install OS X to both the hard drive if I connect them externally.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Keyboard on 2006 macbook keyboard is not working properly. I'm just getting weird symbols when I type yet an external keyboard works fine. Is there something I can reset or replace? Please help!!

Is there a way to run a diagnostic at startup?

Your alt (aka opt or ⌥) key is stuck down. This seems to be quite common these days.
Try teasing it up with the corners of two credit cards or similar flexible, non-conducting tools.
If that doesn't work, the wafer switch underneath may be damaged, in which case it'll need to go in for service.

  • 24" LED display shakes, flickers on/off w/ 13" Air; works fine w/ 11" Air

I have a 2010 24" LED Cinema Display. When I connect my 2010 13" MacBook Air (running 10.9.4), the display shakes like crazy and also flickers on and off. This just started yesterday. It had worked fine w/ that MacBook for a long time.
And when I plug in a different Macbook Air (newer 11"), the display works fine. So, did something all of the sudden happen to my older 13"?
Seems like the problem is with the Mac -- not the display, as the display works with the 11"
    Any thoughts welcome!
