Internal display normal during start up but goes black with external monitor showing desktop

My MacBook Pro (2.4 Ghz, Santa Rosa with infamous nVidia card) acts strange. It shows the normal gray screen with Apple logo and animation flawlessly during start up but the internal display goes black without any rendering at all when all is loaded. (shining a light on display show nothing) If an external monitor is connected through the DVI port it will remain black during start up and then show the desktop as the internal display goes black. This happens both while booting to Mountain Lion and Windows XP. I have checked "About my Mac" and only the external display is listed. The same is the case if I use the nVidia Control panel in Windows XP.
My questions: Is this a hardware problem or is it related to software maybe even firmware? What controls the display during start up, graphics card or something else?

I found an article about the same issue.  Screen looks exactly the same with bloated apple logo.

  • Display goes black with external monitor

I teach and use the Macbook pro used in classroom hooked up to a projector with my dvi/vga connector. After about ten minutes of playing a DVD, the macbook's screen goes black. Movie keeps playing, can get the DVD control on screen BUT the screen on macbook pro never comes back. Plus the cursor, mouse on the projected screen doesn't function. Have to eject DVD, and restart the computer. Very annoying. Had the problem beofre, called apple, reinstalled system software. Was better until yesterday. Any ideas"?

Mine is doing the same thing with a new 20" Cinema Display. Apple support got me to reset the power manager and zap the PRAM (the old standbys), but no joy. They acknowledged they know about the problem and are working towards a solution, but that was the limit of the conversation.
My tech guys thought it might be when attaching an external keyboard and monitor it might be putting the MBP display into closed lid mode, but using only the MBP's keyboard did not prevent the problem.
For me it tends to happen when I'm taxing the processor with PhotoShop or some other workhorse program. iTunes, too. I use dual display, not mirroring.
Additionally, moving stuff to the black MBP screen will cause a hard crash. Even the spinning beachball of death freezes. So be warned, save those open files before rebooting (Apple's current 'fix').
Coincidentally, my top right fan assembly was clicky/whiny right out of the box. Got that replaced under warranty and still have the display shut off issue. I had mused it might be the fan not working was causing the video processor to overheat and shut off, but no such luck.
Looking forward to a firmware/system update.

  • Display out, how to boot from OSX CD with external monitor

    Folks,
My LCD display is broken and I have been using an external monitor for some time, however I'm ready to sell my laptop and wanted to wipe the drive and reload OSX. When I try to boot from the OSX CD I can see part of a desktop on my external monitor and I can see the curser move but some of the desktop is out of view as if the screen wasn't being scaled properly. Any way to make this work so I can see everything?

Hi, mrhifi. I typed a reply earlier, but I must have hit the "Back" button instead of "Post Reply".
After booting to your CD or DVD, press the F7 key to toggle between mirroring and extended-display mode on the external screen. This may give you a complete, usable desktop on that display. However, I don't know that it will work as it should with your built-in display broken. You'll just have to try it and see.

  • Temperature goes up with external monitor

    Hi,
I'm using a 22" LCD monitor connected to my MacBook via DVI. And it's working pretty well. But the system temperature goes up whenever I plug in the monitor.
When I don't have the monitor connected the idle temperature is about 40-45 degrees celcius. When I connect the monitor it quickly goes up to 60-65 degrees celcius at idle.
This is pretty disturbing since the fan starts spinning loudly very easily.
And it doesn't matter if I turn off the MacBook display either. (by putting it to sleep and waking it up)
Is this really normal? Is this due to the weak graphics chip in the macbook? Doesn't seem reasonable that the difference would be 15-20 degrees.

Well. It bothers me a lot to have to put up with all this fan noise just because I plug in a second monitor. I use it all the time when I'm not on the road, so it's not just every now and then.
I guess I should buy an iMac or Mac mini. But having to sync the data all the time gets a bit tiresome.
Thanks for confirming my issues though! I wonder if the Macbook Pro has the same problems?

  • T400 Display works at start up but Dark after Windows 7 loads --- Video port works

My T400  display works  at BIOS startup but goes black was soon as Windows 7 starts to load..  Video out put  works  and I can see an  UN Backlit   image on the display.    Is there some sort  back light controller /driver that may be broken.

Sorry, should have been more specific
I don't mean you should switch to Linux, just run it out of a live CD or USB Stick so that we can rule out a hardware failure. If it works in Linux ok for a while, it can mean that you have some sort of software problem.
If your T400 screen goes dark with Linux as well, you may be facing a hardware problem, which could be a defective backlight, a defective inverter (or LED card) or a defective cable.
Can you post here the model type of your T400? It's a 7 digit code that can be found in a black and white sticker at the bottom of the laptop.

  • An internal error occurred during: "starting server -weblogic server 8.1".

I am using bea workshop studio 3.2, I am always getting an error like the following:
an internal error occurred during: "starting server -weblogic server 8.1".
anybody have an idea why this happen? The funny thing is that I can only start IBM websphere server, but not any of the BEA server (neither 9 nor 8.1). The moment I clicked green "start server" button, immediately I got a pop up window that says "an internal error occurred during: starting server -weblogic server 8.1".
I used to work with IBM websphere, now I changed my job to work with BEA. Based on my experience, WebSphere is way better and easier to use. BEA sucks!
But I have to use BEA and I have been fighting with this problem for 3 days and I am desparate now, please help!!!!
Thank you very much in advance for the help!
    Jingzhi

Yes, I did create a webapplication before I started the server. The more scary thing is that: I somehow managed to start the server once, I do not know how I did it. But now I cannot start it again no matter what. I compared the two settings: I swear that they are idential, but one is starting, the other is still having the same problem. Could you please give me some more hints? I followed exactly the same steps in the articles you referred.
    Thanks,
    Jingzhi

I am also experiencing the same NullPointerException when launching Weblogic 8.1 in debug mode within Eclipse 3.5. Is there any anticipated fix for this issue, or a bugtraq record that we can follow to know when the issue is addressed? I do not expect JSP debugging to work (as it wasn't available with Weblogic 8.1 under Eclipse 3.4 either) - BUT right now I cannot debug ANY server-side code within Weblogic 8.1 in Eclipse 3.5 as the server cannot start in debug mode at all.
    Many thanks.

Trouble with mobile site. Displays for a second then screen goes black. Using safari, 4s on Verizon. Example: m.mlb.com/lad/

I hadn't checked the site since January or so, when it worked. It might be related to the Opening Weekend skin they have on the site, but for me, it shows the top part of the page for 3 seconds while it's loading (scrolling down is impossible) and then all of a sudden it turns black, showing nothing. It's that way for every MLB mobile site.

  • Computer won't start up after recent version of mountain lion.  My power Mac was running extmely slow this morning, so i shut down to restart.  As it is starting the screen goes black, says something about debugging with the word panic in parentheses. was

I upgraded to latest version of mountain lion yesterday, this morning my power Mac was running extremely slowly (while typing, had to wait a second or two for words to appear), I shut down to see if problem would clear up.  When starting up, screen went black with programming jargon, something about debugging with the word panic in parentheses.  Screen then goes back to gray, says Mac encountered a problem and has to restart once I push a key.  Apple logo comes on gray screen, icon keeps circling and nothing happens.  This has happened three times in a row after shutting down and trying to restart.  Any thoughts?

When verifying disk, said could not repair disk, back up as many files as possible then re format disk.  Computer now doing Internet recovery. Should I. Do the following in this order
1 restore from back up on time machine
    2 re install osx
These are the options coming up on osx utilities window

  • G550 screen goes black with no backlight

After 16 months of using, when I try to start my g550, the system seems to start up (all the noises and lights on the front side go on), but the monitor either remains black or lights up for a few seconds and then goes black, with no backlight.
    Please help...

Hello ddominikaa and welcome to community,
Kindly remove the battery and disconnect the power adapter, press the power button for 10 seconds connect the power adapter and check if the display comes.
If the display does not come and laptop is in warranty then contact the support center and get the service case log.
    Best Regards,

  • Can I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but

CCan I use MacBook pro A1211 with external monitor, screen has died but computer seems fine

Hmm seems like this model has DVI out. You could just plug a standard DVI monitor into that. Or use the DVI connector (VGA supported with included adapter; S-video and composite video supported with optional adapters) adapter that came w/ your machine.

  • During start up screen goes to new 3 icon screen first

during start up i now have a new screen that appears. it consises of of 3 icons 1. a circlular arrow, 2 a hard drive icon, and 3 a single straight arrow. i have to press the straight arrow to continue with the normal start up process.
has anyone else had this problem?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
This is the Startup Manager. Follow the instructions in that article to start from your normal disk, then go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and make sure the correct volume is selected there. If it appears to be correctly selected, select something different (like Network Startup), then re-select the correct volume.
You'll probably find "Network Startup" has been selected, and because it can't find anything to boot from on the network, it drops into Startup Manager automatically.

  • Why does my Ipad keep going black and then back to the apple logo.  It eventually goes to the start page but then blacks out again.  I have already rebooted several times with no luck!!

Why does my Ipad 2 keep going black ahd back to the apple logo.  It eventually goes to the home screen and allows me to try something else but after about 30 seconds it happens again.  I have already rebooted several times?

Make Sure iOS is updated to the latest version
Reboot the device by pressing and holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons (power) at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

  • Did a firmware update 2/29/12 and now my second monitor stopped working, turns on and is detected but goes black

I did a recommended mac os update on 2/29/12.  It also performed a firmware update.  When I restarted my external second monitor came on and then went black.  The monitor is detected and if I change it's size it comes on couple of seconds and goes black again.  Any idea what might be the problem? No problems experiecned before update.

Well THANKS Matt_G..... I opened in safe mode and all my previously opened tabs, from when it last worked, displayed properly. I then started Aurora normally and it failed again so took your advice about disabling Add-ons and now all is working properly again. Not sure which Add-on it was because I disabled almost a of them since they really did nothing for me. I might go back tomorrow and try to find the one that did me in. Think that when you update Aurora it checks for new versions of Add-ons and that could also have gotten me.
    Thanks again,
    Rodger
