Internal Drive 1TB or 2TB?

Hi all,
My intent to have a 27" i7 2.93 paired with a FW800 Raid0 G-Raid 2TB drive for video editing and my photography work.
Internal drive will be used for the OS and Apps only
FW800 External drive will be used for lightroom catalog and files and video
Backup will be to a RAID1 NAS.
Question is should I buy the iMac with a 1TB or 2TB internal drive?
I'm sure 1TB is ample for OS and Apps, but I wondering is resell value and flexibility would justify the extra cost.
Any comments appreciated.

Hello P:
Opinion….
but I wondering is resell value and flexibility would justify the extra cost.
I seriously doubt that resale would be affected. I don't see any "flexibility" benefit - based on your description of planned use.

  • Moving iTunes Media folder to second internal drive fails

    The whole story is:
I never really used the iTunes media folder system. All my music is on extrenal drive and I was only importing it into iTunes manually to keep my own folder system, for example once a week Ive created a folder with a date of creating and there I had all the releases from that week (some in their own folder or separately but all in this one folder named by a dat eof creation). So on my ext. drive I have lots of these folders by date. And the names of folder always correspond with the date added to iTunes as well
My ext. drive is full now. so Ive decided to take a next step and put out the dvd-rom and put another internal drive (1TB) into my macbook pro which will be used for music and movie data only (the system stays on the old one).
What I want to do now is somehow move all these music folder to my new internal drive, so they can be accessed from iTunes without reseting all its features.
Ive read that one solution can be creating the new iTunes Media folder on that new drive and Consolidate all music from iTunes to this location. Problem is I cant even try it, because when go to iTunes Preferences to change the location of Media folder a hit Create after selectin the new location (new internal drive) after fee seconds the progress freezes and Activity Monitor says that iTunes are not responding. Ive tried to leave it for about half an hour and no changes, even tho theres not much to copy/move cause the Media folder has no music in it, only playlists etc.
So question number one is - why its freezing?
Question number two - any other way to trasfer all my collection and keep its organiation as it is without loosing the iTunes list and be able to use it after transfer?
Thanks in advance for your help and tips

    Not sure about question 1...
What I think you should do is try to copy the existing iTunes library folder from <User's Music>/iTunes to <1Tb Drive>/iTunes then hold down option as you start iTunes. You should be asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the library file at <1Tb Drive>/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl (BTW if the the .itl extension is missing you should probably add it match the current format, but it will work either way).
The new copy of the library should work just as before, but check a few random things first, you can always revert to the previous library with option-start-iTunes if it doesn't work.
Under iTunes > Library > Orgainze Library if the option is available tick Reorganize files in the folder <Media Folder>. This will make sure the new version of your library is as portable as possible. Next under preferences > Advanced make sure that the media folder is given as <1Tb Drive>/iTunes/iTunes Media. If needed you can change this value. If you change the folder at this point iTunes should offer to copy your existing media into this new location. That ought to work, thought it will take some time. Alternatively you decline the offer and then selectively consolidate the library in batches, e.g. by selecting the tracks of all Artists beginning with A, and consolidating just those tracks, then repeasting with, B, C etc. followed by other types of media. If iTunes didn't prompt, or the folder was already correct, you can decide whether to try in batches or use iTunes > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files.

  • 2 TB Internal Drive Apple installed ejects improperly

This happens when I put my 2012 iMac to sleep. I'm running Lion 10.7.5, with 2 internal drives. The 2TB was installed by Apple, a Hitiachi HDS723020BLA642 firmware version MN0KB6D0. When it ejects and I get the error message I can only get it back by restarting. Disk Doctor can't see it to mount it. I have 2 Seagate external drives attached USB2, one for Time Machine. I've had the iMac since June 2012. The problem started 1-2 months ago but has gotten more frequent recently. I'm a graphic artist and decided to get the internal so I didnot have to worry about files disappearing because a drive won't mount. I figured and internal would solve that problem. It did not. Now I'm worried I may lose my work because of what's happening. Is anyone having this problem? I don't have the energy saver put the drives to sleep so it isn't that. Maybe a firmware update?

  • 2TB vs. 1TB Hitachi internal drives

I need to add 2-3 new internal drives. Has anyone had better reliability with 1TB vs. 2TB internal hard drives?

I have not bought any 2TB but I have WD Black and Green in 1TB and 1.5TB.

  • Can I replace a 1TB drive with a 2TB

I own a first generation Time Capsule with a 1 TB drive (6,106.) The light just started flashing amber and the message with Airport Utility is "Internal Disk Needs Repair." Assuming the drive has gone south, can I replace this 1TB drive with a 2TB one, or is there a BIOS restriction.

It is just time.. the TC were designed to run too hot for the power supply to last.
The fan should be running all the time as indeed they do in the new versions. The supply will be on the edge and in fact what you are experiencing maybe power supply.. it depends.. if yours is Gen1 with 1TB hitachi drive I have yet to see a dead drive.. lots of dead supplies.
If you have Gen2 they changed to WD black.. and lots of the drives are dead.. the typical WD fail 3 spin ups and then nothing. Tell me if you have A1254 or A1302.. from the bottom rubber Mat top line.
New Green drives are lower power consumption but due to their design of spinning down whenever possible they have a bigger motor for start up.. it pulls 2A at 12V and the power supply in the early TC cannot sustain it.
So if you replace disk you really need to replace power supply.
I have a lot of suggestions.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
    And even repair kits.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/time-capsule-power-supply-repair-kits
But the design is fully explained.. so if you want to DIY you can.
I have had several people come to me after upgrading the hard disk and finding it then didn't work.. due to power supply being on the edge and a replacement with external 12v supply fixes it.
But is it economic.. ?? That is the question.. If you have a Gen1 with an hitachi drive it could be worth it. As the drive could still be good.. pull it out and test it.
Otherwise buy a second hand Gen4 with 2TB drive already in it. They sell for around $180 here if you shop well. A Gen4 is cheaper than power supply plus hard disk repair for a Gen1 or Gen2 and you get 50% faster hard disk access with the same drive... (TC are processor bound and later ones have 50% faster processor) and better wireless. Or get a new TC.. which is a big jump in price but comes with full warranty.

  • Want 1TB Windows partition on 3TB internal drive

I was able to successful finally get a Windows (Boot Camp) partition on my 3TB internal drive (see this thread), but it allocated 2TB to Windows. Loner T explained why this was, but said that it was possible to get 1TB for Mac OSX, 1TB for Windows, and the last 1TB as ColdStorage for Mac OSX. I would like to do this, if anyone (Loner T?) has the instructions).
Also is it possible to link the two Mac OSX partitions so that it looks and acts as a single drive. (I am assuming that ColdStorage does that by default, but if not, my question stands.)
Thanks in advance so any information anyone can provide.

  • Anyone using a 1TB internal drive on a MacBook Pro?

Hi. I plan to upgrade the internal drive (250GB) on my MBP to either 750GB or 1TB. OWC sells a 1TB drive from Western Digital. Does anyone have experience with this drive? Thx
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD10TPVT/

Yes, I have this drive installed in my 2010 17". Fits fine. I have heard that it also fits in the 15". A couple of things:
The drive is only 5200 rpm, so expect startup to be a tad slower. Not awful, just a little slower. I never really restart my Mac so this is only an issue every once in a while - mostly during system updates.
This drive has anti-drop/shock protection built-in, unlike the Apple drives. To avoid any issues, I disabled the built-in protection. A quick google will tell you how to do this. It is a couple of lines entered into the terminal. The setting is remembered after the lines are entered.
The one annoying bit that took a little while to figure out was the drive was making *a lot* of noise due to excessive head parking. It is set up out of the box to very aggressively conserve power. There is a solution to this and it is a small program called "hdapm" it is a little command line tool that sets the driver to a less agressive power saving mode at startup. There are also instructions online for this. google "hdapm" for details. You need to download the binary, stick it in a folder, then set up a very small startup script to point to it. All done.
The drive is excellent and huge. Very quiet after the head parking issue was solved. I've been running mine for about 2 months or so now. Highly recommended.

Yes, you can import to an external drive by choosing it from the Import Screen.
Once an Event or Project is in iMovie, it is best to move it to the external using iMovie, so the Project does not lose links to the Event.

  • Imac has 2tb internal drive, can i use a 2 tb external for TM?

I wiild like to use a 2 tb drive to backup my imac (2tb) with TM. Does time machine do a full disk backup or only the used memory? I haven't seen and drives larger than 2tb if this wont work.

TM as any other backup tool backs up used disk space, not the whole disk capacity. how much data do you have on the internal drive? note that TM drive should generally be at least two times bigger than the total amount of data you are backing up. you might want to look at a RAID array to use as a backup drive if you don't satisfy that ratio. or you can use a different backup solution which doesn't require as much space on the backup drive. see this post by kappy for options

  • Two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine; only one backup deletes.

I'm using two 2TB internal drives in tandem for Time Machine and deleted some backups while in Time Machine. They deleted from drive A, but drive B still has the files. Is there a way to delete these? I tried unmounting drive A in Disk Utility but then I can't enter Time Machine.
I love the dual backups, but should I be able to do dual deletes of all backups? I don't see a way to accomplishg this except to force Time Machine to do a backup, then do that again so it switches drives, but that seems a bit convoluted.
If one of you guru types has an answer I'd be most interested.
    Thanks.
    Mike
    Mac Pro 3.1 8 Core ML.3

You can manually deal with this by using the "Browse Other Backup Disks" function which is accessed via holding the opt/alt key and while selecting the TM icon in the menu bar.
You can then delete the instances of the desired files in each backup set.
Not elegant, but I wouldn't expect that this will be done automatically, as there are a lot of permutations of how you use multiple backup sets.

  • Min Bootcamp Win7 and keep space for scratch 2nd 1TB internal drive

    Hi all
    Would appreciate some advice.
I have a MacPro and a second 1TB (blank) internal drive (arriving today)
I'd like to install Windows 7 on the 2nd drive and have the rest of the drive usable by the Mac for spare space, scratch etc. I don't need a large space for Win 7 - only a couple of Apps and Office. 32 Gig would SEEM enough?
Looking for most flexible solution. ie copying files between systems. being able to clean Win7 (remove easily and reinsntall) if issues.
Some posts mention Bootcamp on a second drive seems to take the whole drive by default and not make it easily accessible from the Mac - definitely don't want this scenario.
    ?

    Hi deepshade,
have a look/read at the BootCamp Installation Guide to be found here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ or inside the BootCamp Assistant in OSX.
Especially the pages 6 and following.
In essence, partition the second HD to one partition (using GPT as partition scheme (Option-button)) and MacOS Extended (Journaled) as file system.
Then use the BootCamp Assistant to repartition that HD to two partitions making the needed Windows partition.
32GB might be too small for your useage. In general about 40GB are recommended but with installing Office and some other apps I would recommend something in the 70-80GB area.
And since resizing the Windows partition is quite a hassle to do, I wouldn't think "too small"
It might be needed for the Windows installation to pull-out the HD in Bay1 (and according the Installation Guide this might also be the case just for the repartitioning with the BootCamp Assistant), so you should think about a temporary clone of your OSX from HD1 to the OSX partition on HD2, but your mileage might vary on this.
And lastly FYI, there is a whole Forum dedicated to Apples BootCamp here http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=237

  • Network drives counted in internal drive??

I Use an iMac 27 with Maverick. After a recent external hard drive crash I installed a 2TB Time Machine as my replacement external drive to hold photos. (This is not a Time Machine question). Having recently cleaned up my internal drive that was nearing its 1TB capacity I was surprised to see it full again. Then I noticed my new network drive is showing up under the Mac main drive. it appears it's counting the new drive toward the 1TB capacity.  I started downloading my lost files from the cloud and as the new network drive added data the capacity of my 60% internal ran to 100%. Any ideas how to get my internal mac drive not to count the network drive?

Eric, I've tried your suggestion regarding Spotlight but not sure if I am seeing results.  In Spotlight Privacy I can add the shared folder called "Data" (has three men icon on the folder) on the external network drive but whether I add it and remove it (as suggested by the link you sent) or add it and leave it on the list  (so that Finder doesn't search there) I still get the full Macintosh HD - 995GB.
I've also been trying to use OmniDiskSweeper to locate large files but when I show the list of drives to sweep, it lists Macintosh HD and my other external drives but not the Network drive. Yet when I open the Macintosh HD to sweep, it lists the shared drive as one of the Volumes of the Macintosh HD but it doesn't list the other external drives under the Mac HD - only the network drive shows as part of the Mac HD.
I noticed at one time that the new external drive had an eject symbol next to it in Finder like my other external drives and now it doesn't show it.  I tried to "disconnect" the external but it still shows on OmniDiskSweeper and I'm thinking its in the total of the Macintosh HD as it shows as a Volume in OmniDiskSweeper.
I'm wondering if a Time Capsule can be used for anything but Time Machine as it doesn't seem to want to cooperate as an external drive.

  • Internal Drive Going...

I am using three of my four drive slots. The first slot contains an original 500G hard drive and it runs the system. Slots 2 and 3 hold 1TB drives. I also have two 1TB external USB drives. I had three but during some very hot weather I lost one. I tried to save it using Disk Warrior but DW couldn't find or work with it.
So I used DW to run a repair on all of my drives without a problem - except for that first internal drive. To run a repair required booting from the DW disk and running DW from there. It started out alright and got to a mid-point of reviewing the drive then just stopped. After 6 hours I ended the repair process (it wasn't actually repairing, just locating the files), tried it again and came up with the same problem. The system runs as well as it did before the attempt but I don't want to take any chances.
I have a new 2TB Western Digitial drive I'll slide into the 4th slot and move the data (movie and editing stuff) from slot 3 over to Slot 4, erase/reforma Slot 3 and use Carbon Copy to clone my original hard drive (Slot 1) over to Slot 3, then switch the two drives so Slot 3 beocmes Slot 1 and restart the machine so I boot from Slot 1 (the newer 1TB drive).
My question is, I can do that, right? I shouldn't run into problems, right?
I'll be moving the operating system (10.5.6) from a 500g over to a 1TB just in time for the upcoming release of Snow Leopard.
If anyone sees a problem please speak up and let me know. I've never cloned an OS before but theoretically see no problem (or am I just too full of myself???)
    Thanks, Lisa

Here is a better solution that will handle what you want, take a small amount of time to setup.
Always work with an "emergency boot drive" for maintenance and repairs, doesn't get used for anything else and has DW etc on it with just Apple current system. Small 20GB and backup once for safety on a DU "sparse" disk image.
Make a bootable backup of your current system.
Never repair a drive that is not backed up, try to backup anything essential.
    - you can Preview and backup inside Disk Warrior.
Never run repairs off a CD or DVD, just use your "E" drive.
Before upgrading to 10.5.7, backup, and then boot from "E" drive and run maintenance.
There are no slot depend positions and it doesn't make any sense to move a physical drive to another slot or drive bay. Sounds complicated and doesn't buy anything in the process.
You could put your emergency 20GB on any of your non-system drive, or on more than one, plenty of room on the 2TB WD.
There are times when DW can take a long time if the directory is damaged, if the journal is wrong, if there are a large amount of file fragments and has trouble finding files. It has been known to take a day - or three.
Use the System Pref control panel to set the default boot drive. And use the OPTION key to boot from an alternate drive for one time.
Keep it simple and you will have less trouble - and work.

  • Clean Install / Cloning to an second internal drive?

My boot drive is full and now seems slower - is it file fragmentation which slows a full drive?
Here's my set up - I've just added a second internal 1TB drive and want to clean install the original boot drive (350gb) which is almost full and seems to have slowed down. - What is the best way to do this?
Can i clone to a second internal drive?
Can i clone drive 1 onto drive 2 then clean install drive 1?
I want to keep a back up of system set up, software preferences etc.. so nothing goes wrong
Can i then use Migration Assistant to get everything back in place on drive 1 (software preferences etc..)
Then drop the folders in from drive 2 into 1 - then erase drive 2 to start fresh
    (I'm running OS 10.5.8)
    Thanks for any help

    Hi
Yes you can use it as a regular drive. Store Data or even install the OS.
RAID 0 = Stripe. As an example 2x1TB drives striped will give you a single volume 2TB in capacity or thereabouts. RAID 0 gives you capacity and performance with no redundancy. If one of the drives fails you lose everything. Data is 'striped' across both drives. One drive does not get 'filled' up first before data is stored on the second drive.
It's important therefore with a RAID Stripe to have a clear and well-thought out backup strategy if you want to protect your data.
RAID 1 = Mirror. As an example 2x1TB mirrored would give you a single volume 1TB or thereabouts in size. RAID 1 gives you redundancy at the cost of capacity and performance. If the primary mirror fails the data is still on the secondary mirror allowing you time to replace the failed mirror. Data would then be 'mirrored/copied' again onto the replacement drive. Depending how much data you have this can take some time. Performance does suffer whilst this happening.
Depending on your hardware and how far you want to take this there is a whole world of RAID waiting for you to explore. If you had a MacPro for example you could use 4x1TB drives and have a RAID 10. A Mirror of a Stripe or - if you like - a Stripe of a Mirror. Either way you end up with a 2TB Volume giving you some measure of performance with redundancy. Beyond what's available built-in you're really looking at hardware RAID solutions. These can offer RAID 5 and RAID 6 with variations thereof. For example RAID 5 with hot spare etc or RAID 3 or even RAID 50 and so on.
The 'general rule' leaving 10% free if anything should be expanded to 15% if you're considering RAID. Performance degrades alarmingly once you get beyond that figure even more than un-RAIDed volumes.

  • Time Machine Restore on New Internal Drive

I'm getting ready to install a new 1TB internal drive for my iMac and trying to determine the best way to do my system restore. I have two questions...
Question #1: Should I use Time Machine to restore my data, etc, to my new internal hard drive? Is this the best way to accomplish this or should I start fresh and restore everything manually?
Question #2: I have two external drives. One is used only for iMovie Events (1TB) and the other is used for Time Machine backups (2TB). I use Time Machine to back up both the internal drive (soon to be 1TB) and the 1TB external drive (once again, my iMovie Events). If I use Time Machine to restore, can I restore only those files that were associated with the internal drive? I really wont need to restore all my iMovie events on the external drive.
    Thanks so much!

that's up to you. the easiest is to restore from TM. if you are having problems with your current system you can do a manual restore but it's a lot more work.

yes. the easiest option is to do a full system restore which will restore your system drive. to do that boot from the leopard install DVD and choose 'restore system from backup" from the Utilities menu at the top. you don't need to install leopard on the new drive first. the drive can be blank.
