Internal Drive not visible

A day after installation of Leopard, my second internal drive (bought from Apple) has disappeared from Finder and from my desktop. Applications that know that it is there (e.g., iPhoto) can open files on the drive correctly, Disk Utility can see it and says it is mounted and OK, and a second Mac running Leopard on my network can see the second hard drive. However, I cannot save any new files to it, since Finder (or the "Save" dialog boxes) do not show it. Also, it is visible, but greyed out on a Mac on my network that is running Tiger.
I called Apple and they suggested that if I reformat it it might reappear, but this seems a bit extreme. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. However, I didn't get a chance to try that, as I finally found another posting that addressed the issue a few minutes after I gave up searching and posted my own question. That posting was:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1208729&tstart=90#5705189
I used the suggested script to change the "visibility" attribute of the drive that had disappeared and it worked great.

    System profiler knows it's there.
Disk Utility indicates that it can be un-mounted (only a generic 'turned down page' for volume icon however), Disk has full Hard Drive logo...
But I cannot access it on this machine, but plug it into another and it's ok...

(only a generic 'turned down page' for volume icon however), Disk has full Hard Drive logo...
You can see that appearance in Disk Utility if the volume permissions are such that the current user has "No Access."
Since it can be accessed normally from another machine, connect it there and do a Get Info from Finder, looking at the Ownership and Permission Details at the bottom. Assuming this is not a startup disk, if any of the permissions is set to "No Access", change it to "Read and Write". Don't click "Apply to enclosed items" however.

  • Time Capsule internal hard drive not visible

I have one of the older 500GB TC. It worked fine for a year then I decided to wipe the hard drive to erase the contents. I stopped the process in the middle of clearing the hard drive because it was going on about 8 hours. Every since then the TC works fine as a wireless router, but the internal hard drive is not visible. It won't do any back ups and it's not visible in the Airport program.

See this thread, this is 3rd regarding recovery/restore - as a starting point.
Obviously it is easier if you have a couple backups, a drive you can use, and don't mind erasing the internal drive.
It is a lot easier then. And it would be easier if you didn't have a notebook. This forum is not MacBook Pro but the tower or workstation.

  • Internal Harddrive not visible or bootable????

    System Profile info, Model - iMac7,1, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Dou, 4GB DDR2, 800Mhz Bus, OSX 10.6.5
Last week my iMac started taking a long time to boot up. I reinstalled a backup from bootcamp. It work for a couple of days then starting hanging up after the start up chime. When I turned it on the apple logo would come up with the spinning pin wheel along with a progress indicator bar (this was new) showing the progress for the start up. So I installed OS on one of my external HD with the intent to copy clone it to the internal. While building the external HD, both internal and external drives were visible in the finder. Now that I have the external up and running, the internal HD does not show up in Finder or System Profile/ Hardware. I used other software to show invisible files, and Disk Utility. Neither could detect the internal HD. I have owned this iMac for 3 yrs and one month.

    Hi P-T
Sounds to me like the Hard Drive has died and needs to be replaced.
To have the Hard Drive replaced, simple call your locate an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
in North America, see > http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
or for World Wide service, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
If your technically inclined and would like to replace the Hard Drive yourself, google around there are plenty of good Video's and DIY's out.

I would like to also suggest using a WD Caviar Blue as a replacement Drive instead of a WD Caviar Black or a Seagate, it is my experience that they run cooler, quieter and are better suited for the all-in-one desktop systems.

  • External hard drive not visible in disk utility or finder

    Hi all,
I have had a good look through previous discussions and I can't seem to find an issue relevant to mine.
My external hard drive has 2 partitions (1 time machine back up, 1 general hard drive). The issue is that the HD is running when it is plugged in however it is not visible in either disk utility or finder.
I am running OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) on a 2010 MacBook Pro. I also have parallels desktop running windows 7. When I boot windows and plug in the HD I usually get the option to mount the HD to either OS X or Windows. With this issue the option window appears for a split second (not enough time to select either) and then disappears. It seems that the HD may be ejecting itself as soon as it is registered by the computer. I have tried using a different power cable for the HD and also a different usb cable, this doesn't help.
The external HD is a Samsung D3 Station, which i have had for 6 months now and never had an issue with.
    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks,
    Bruce

An update for anyone who can help me:
I have tried the external hard drive in other computers (mac and windows), each time I get the same problem above.
I have removed the HD from the enclosure and purchased a docking station for it (3.5" SATA). When I plug it in to the laptop it disconnects itself straight away before it is visible. With the windows computers it installs the drivers and says that the device is ready to use, then disconnects before it shows up.
As the HD is not visible there is no option to re-format or anything.
This is very frustrating as I was using the HD with no issues and it randomly disconnected and I have not been able to access since.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • External hard drive not visible in Finder or Disk Utility

    Hi everyone,
My Wester Digital 2TB external hard drive has disappeared, so to speak, with all my photos. I work as a freelance photographer. Mostly on Lightroom 5.6
When I plug it in, with firewire, I can feel the disk rotating normally however it does not appear in finder or disk utility.
I've tried using a USB cable, restarting my mac, forced restart, changing firewire ports (HD has 2 ports), plugging the HD into a different laptop and nothing.
Ive also searched Finder prefrences and visibility is enabled.
I have no idea what could have caused this as I was using the HD the night before. I didnt pullout without properly ejecting. Maybe the HD is full or almost, but I dont think that would the cause of these troubles.
    I'm using a late 2011 Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.4
    Any suggestions??
    Thanx

  • External hard drive not visible in Finder, but is operating

iMac, 2 Gb RAM, Snow Leopard 10.6.4.
It has 4 external USB drives attached through a powered hub. All of a sudden, after about a year, one of them no longer shows up in ‘Finder’. However, all four drives have an icon on the desktop. The drive is visible and verifiable in ‘Disk Utility’. Double clicking the desktop icon opens the drive and I can copy a file from it. iTunes can see it. From a Macbook’s ‘Finder’, over WiFi, I can see and copy files to and from the drive. Finder Preferences shows nothing amiss. I’ve shut down and restarted the iMac several times with no change. The drive just does not show up in Finder on the host iMac.
Searching this forum has not helped. Any suggestions?
    Max

Well, this is embarrassing. A suggestion from an older thread on Macrumors.com called "Hard Drive does not appear in Finder / Desktop", solved this problem. Simply drag the missing drive icon from the desktop to Finder! Perseverance and different search wording AND reading a lot of stuff pays off.
If other's problem is not solved with this fix, you might benefit from this 10.5-based thread. They also mention an Apple 10.5 fix. Both URL's below.
The op's problem was that the drive did not appear in Finder OR the desktop but was operational. There was a lot of in-depth information with this fix embedded.
Thanks for the interest and suggestions.

  • External hard drive not visible on Mac Mini

I just purchased a Mini with Lion.  The Seagate Freeagent external hard drive is visible from finder on the Mini but it is "read only" and it is not visible on the wireless network to my macbook.  How can I make the external hard drive read write and make it visible on the network?

OS X can read an NTFS formatted drive, but not write to it.

  • IMac G5 17" is DOA... drive not visible in Disk Utility

About a week after my computer went out of warranty (OS 10.3.9), I have been experiencing random complete system meltdowns every 5 or 6 months. It begins while using the search feature, the beachball spins for 8-10 minutes then pulls search results. Following that, the system stalls on every task, and restarts with the blinking "?" folder. In the past, a re-install of the OS was a frustrating, but simple solution.
Last Friday, this happened for the fourth and final time. Upon attempting to re-install the OS, the install froze, locking up the computer. When I restarted to try to re-install the OS, the drive was not visible in the Disk Utility. It isn't visible in any Mac utility that I have tried, nor Disk Warrior.
I just replaced the SeaGate 7200 hard drive with a refurbed one, and the problem continutes--the drive is not visible to the install.
Is this 2-year old Mac now a paperweight? With the market resale value of this machine only about $500-600, I can't stomach spending a third of that to have something repaired, for all of this to potentially happen again.
Is it terminal? Has anyone else experienced this?
I'm really bummed out. As a Mac user for the last 15 years, I can't bear the thought of spending another 2 grand on a computer that will let me down again. I'm tired of the Pee Cee world hazing me as it is, and episodes like this don't make it any easier. Someone please tell me there is a solution...
    doug

It DID break down a week after I received a call from Apple asking me to purchase an extended warranty. I wouldn't make that up.
It's on 10.3.9 because, in typical Apple fashion, 10.4 came out a WEEK after I bought my computer. I never bought the upgrade software from Apple just out of anger that a new computer was shipped with obsolete OS installed when a new version was hitting the shelves so soon afterwards. I work on 10.4.10 here at the office, and never missed the "features" at home. For $179, it wasn't something that ever screamed to be a necessity for a home computer.
The drive wasn't necessarily refurbed, but it was "recycled" and bought cheap to find out if it could be a simple solution. For $35, it was an easy attempt to figure out what was wrong with the computer. It didn't solve the problem, and was much cheaper than throwing money at it without knowing what was wrong.
At this point, I'm trying to save this box from becoming landfill. I bought a Dell PC laptop this past weekend for a third of what I paid for this iMac, and when it breaks down or obsoletes itself in 2 years, it won't be so difficult to swallow getting rid of it for something new.
I'm going to open this up again this afternoon to check the test LEDs and see if I can spot anything.
Don't get me wrong, I love Macs, and always will, but I can't any longer justify spending $2000 on a home computer. They are disposable appliances, and if they aren't going to come from the factory with warranties long enough to last through their lifetime, then it's difficult to spend that much money on a computer than only needs MORE money spent to maintain functionality.
I'll post back with my findings later today after I crack this open. Thanks for the assistance so far.

  • Hard drives not visible in Disk Utility

I decided to add two additional 1.5 TB drives to my (early 2008) Mac Pro, in addition to the two 1.0 TB drives already there. I have a Mac RAID card, but the drives were not configured into an array because I was having battery and setting problems with the RAID card as described in previous posts.
I perhaps got the the not so bright idea to reconfigure my system from scratch, so I put the two 1.5 TB drives in, created partitions via Disk Utility, and then took all the drives out. I then put one of the new 1.5 TB drives in only, and re-installed OS X. So far, so good. Then, I put all 4 drives in, including the previous 1.0 TB drive with OS X on it.
Interestingly, the system then booted to the old 1.0 TB drive with OS X, and then it 'hung' on something with the spinning icon. I shut it down, and then put the new 1.5 TB with OS X, but it would not start. I yanked out the RAID card, figuring it was not helping. I managed to put the Boot DVD in, and the system does boot to DVD. However, it cannot visualize any drive at all, only the two DVDs in Disk Utility.
I tried several things. One is hardware scan by holding the 'D' key on startup -> no errors.
I then tried resetting the PRAM holding the command-option-P-R keys, same issue - boots to DVD, but no drives.
I then tried resetting what I think is the SMC, which is a button on the motherboard down near where the memory slots, and there a green light comes on next to the STBY area.
I'm out of the Apple care warranty, and I guess I'll have to pay for support going into the Mac Store, but I am hopeful someone has an idea.
I wondered if the cable from the SATA connector to the motherboard was loose, but it appears intact. However, I'm not sure how to get the plastic cage off.

Good idea, but the RAID card is out, and even the original drives are not visible. There is some type of BIOS or some related error.

  • WDMyCloud NAS drive not visible

    Hi,
on new Win8.1 pro PC, my NAS drive, WDMyCloud, is not visible in Network as a computer. It is visible under Media Devices and under Storage section though. So I can play media from it and access the management console but not access/transfer files and map
a drive to it. The WDMyCloud drive is accessible via my Android smart phone. Also my Windows 8.1 laptop can see it as computer (though sometimes takes a while now - until I connected the new PC all was working fine). The drive is connected to WiFi
router by ethernet cable and I can ping it from all devices. Please help me map the drive.

    Hi Fangzhou,
disabling the firewall had no effect. The link you provided did not provide a solution either. I don't use Norton antivirus, just the default Windows Defender. The fact that "unspecified error" mostly means "access denied" is interesting
though. I therefore investigated further and found 2 errors in the system event log which might point to the cause. The pc17 is the computer where I am having the problem, pc8 is another computer on my network. They seem to be having some kind
of dispute though lol. Not being able to join WORKGROUP and the NAS, as the settings indicate, would have made itself part of WORKGROUP, this may well prevent the NAS being visible and cause the "unspecified error". If this is the
cause then not really sure how to make these two combatants be nice to each other :-D.

  • Internal Drive Not found

I just went away for the weekend, and I normally leave my computer on 24 hours a day. An internal SATA drive I've been using for months, now isn't even visible on the SATA bus in System Profiler. I'm having to boot off another drive.
When I start the computer, I get a repeating click (whic must be the drive's mechanism), and then eventually it boots off another internal drive.
My hope is, that this is a temperature thing, since it's been working fine for so long, and the only thing that's changed is that it's been cold, instead of operating temperature.
Disk Utility doesn't even see the mechanism, and neither does Disk Warrior.
    Any tips?
    DP2G G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Doesn't sound good Dave. I'd say your drive has gone belly up. DiskWarrior is probably your best hope and since that didn't work.....Do you have a backup? If so I'd probably just start with a new drive. Warranty? ApppleCare?

  • DVD drive not visible and detected

    Hi,
I'm using windows 7 home 64bit on HP Pavilion dv4-3031tx notebook. Few months ago, I changed my DVD rom drive from HP service center as the burning option was not working. After changing, it was working fine. Now the drive is not visible when I open my computer. I installed all the drivers again from the recovery manager provided by the HP recovery disk, but still it remains same. Strange thing is when I insert my recovery disk and reboot my notebook seleting boot from DVD option, notebook can detect the disk and approaches for OS installation. If possible, I want to slove this problem instead of reinstalling windows from recovery disk as I have tons of programs installed in HD. Please give an effective solution. I'm really worried.
    Thanks in advance.

It is a fairly common problem and there is a Microsoft Autofix for it:

You can run the autofix but I have had better luck with doing the manual registry edit which is also outlined on the link.
