Ok story here is, I had Mac OS X 10.4.8 running on the stock 30GB Maxtor and had a 80GB Seagate running as storage for a while. I decieded "I have enough space on the 80GB for Mac OS why not use it? I upgraded to a 80B Seagate Barracuda hard drive, so i used disk utility's restore button to swap everything over from the stock 30GB Maxtor drive and after that i wanted to move some of the files to folder's such as the Movies folder Documents folder and so on. But when I move the files to those folder's or anywhere else but the hard drive it wants to copy all the files. I looked at the hard drive's accessibility and the Onwership & permissions is grayed out so I cant even change it. What do I do?

You shouldn't change the ownership or permission settings on the Mac OS X startup disk; doing so may cause the disk to disappear and the computer to fail to start up properly. An administrator account should be able to move files and folders out of that folder that they are the owner of; to move other items out of the top level of the hard disk, press the Command key while dragging the file, click Authenticate if a dialog box appears, and type your administrator password.

Not allowed to move (only copy) files within Shared Folder (yes, permissions are set to Read/Write)

I have moved my media (Music, Movies, Pictures) to the Users/Shared folder. As I'm doing some cleanup in these folders, I am trying to move several folders/files at once, all within the same Shared folder. I have confirmed that the permissions settings under "Get Info" are set to "Read/Write" and I have verified and repaired permissions with Disk Utility. However, every move I try to do is a copy. I have tried the Command-Drag method, but I'm still left with the green plus sign indicating a copy.
On smaller files/folders, this wouldn't matter so much as I would copy, then just delete the original. But I'm dealing with many, many gigs of music and my HD doesn't have space for holding copies, even if the originals will be deleted.
Very frustrating to have to spend so much time to figure out what would seem to be a very basic file management feature.
I've searched and read and searched some more, but I'm stuck. Thanks to any who can help.

WD elements 1TB SS portable USB hard drive wont let me mount with IMAC

I have put my music and important documents on my WD Elements 1TB SS hard drive from a HP windows XP laptop and i also have a WD Elements 1TB that i used for a back up, i can see them both when i go into disk utility on the iMac but it wont let me mount or open or do anything, i can see them there but can not open them, i have since preivosly tried it on a windows 7 computer and same thing happens, i can see the hard drives but can not open them, it even makes the tune when you plug it in and take it out but still no joy..... any suggestions?

Early 2011 (March) MBP hard drive crashed a week ago, all data was lost. Why is the Hitachi hard drive so prone to have defective read/write heads?

Shouldn't Apple be better quality than this? I've used my old MBP from 2006 for 5 years with no problems. I've only had to back up data maybe once a year because it was so durable.
But this 2011 MBP had the hitachi 320gb SATA drive and one day it started clicking and everything froze. I immediately shut it down took it to the Apple Store, in which the genius bar guy said there was nothing they could do other than swap out the drive (which I did myself as I was not prepared to be charged $250+ for services and waste 2-3 weeks as my warranty was 1 month overdue). Even with AppleCare coverage, Apple will still not recover the data...
This is ridiculous! I strictly use the MBP for school/no gaming/haven't dropped it or moved it around rigorously/bought it instore (assuming it was handled properly). There is no reason for being such crap quality at $1300. I took it to a data recovery center and get this, the quote was $1700 as the read/write heads were defective and the surface of the disk was scratched, I could buy a new computer with that money! Were there no quality checks for these drives? I have PC laptops at home and none of them has had that problem! I'm planning to dispute this with Apple for losing years worth of valuable data.
Does anyone have the same problem? Are early 2011 MBPs prone to hard drive failures?

As Ogel stated drives fail. Unless you bought your 2011 Mac right when the early 2011 models came out you still should be under the one year warranty. They came out at the end of Febuary.
So that drive should be covered, dependinig on when you bought your Mac. And they offer a extended warranty which if you had purchased it would cover the drive failure, Hardware not data.
As far as the data, Apple includes the Time Machine program and there are 2, that I know of, cloning programs available to backup your data. If you did not use any of those programs you will ALWAYS LOSE YOUR DATA.
That is a fact of computers. They fail, end of story. Unless you have multiple copies of your files you are going to lose them.

I used NI Automotive Diagnostic Command Set 1.0 Read/Write EEPEOM By Address of ECU base VW TP2.0 KWP2000 diagnostic protocol . I used NI example ReadWrite Memory.vi but not successful. I know must use below step.
Description
The usual procedure for getting a security access to the ECU is as follows:
Request a seed from the ECU using RequestSeed.vi with access mode = n.
From the seed, compute a key for the ECU on the host.
Send the key to the ECU using SendKey.vi with access mode = n + 1.
The security access is granted if the ECU validates the key sent. Otherwise, an error is returned.
Who has used NI Automotive Diagnostic Command Set 1.0 and know VW TP2.0 KWP2000 protocol. Please support some suggest and example VI.

Now I know how to calculate the key and successful.But sometimes ok and sometimes no ok. The best luck is pass three error.

i have tried setting up an Icloud account and it tells me the ipod is no longer eligiable for a free icloud account..

Each device has a limited number of free iCloud accounts that can be set up. Once that limit is reached, all you can do is either re-use one of the accounts previously created on the device, or set up a new account using another iOS device or Mac (running OS X 10.7.2 or later), if you have one.

Wrt110 wont let me set IP address

I'm replacing an older Linksys Wireless router with the WRT110. The old router had a hardcoded IP address of 192.168.199.142 mask 255.255.255.224 which is perfectly legitimate in terms of addressing. My entire network is set up with valid addresses and the same 255.224 subnet mask.
When I try to set the address and subnet mask in the WRT110, I keep getting this error:
"Start IP not in same network 129~158" which is completely stupid. If I use a different subnet mask, all traffic is going to get routed to and back from the default gateway instead of just going direct to the device.
How can I get the stupid WRT110 to accept this legitimate address????

"Start IP" sounds like the "Start IP Address" of the DHCP server. If you the LAN IP address to 192.168.199.142/255.255.255.224 the start ip address of the DHCP server cannot be the default .100. Thus, if you change the LAN IP address and subnet mask you have to modify the DHCP server start ip address either beforehand or at the same time.

My Sonnet Tempo ATA100 pci card does not recognize my 200GB Seagate IDE hard drive in my G4 tower. The drive appears fine on desktop when connected to original mother ribbon. What can it be?

Several thoughts....
Controller cards can be persnickety about what they see (or allow to be seen).
Do not rush out to buy another controller card. If you have access to another controller card (free), by all means try substituting it.
Sonnet controller cards are bashful, and are not always seen by your Mac even when they are working. This makes diagnosing problems more difficult. They should be seen by Disk Utility however, even if they are not seen by the Apple profiler.
A controller card sees its hard drive as a SCSI drive, and the hard drive needs to be formatted when connected to the controller card in order to install its SCSI drivers. (This is, of course, difficult when you can't find the drive in the first place.)
Try different configurations: jumper settings, as slave to another drive if you have one, different cable or different socket on the controller card, resetting the PRAM and/or the motherboard, mounting in a different Mac if you have one handy --- substituting with known-good parts is always a good idea.
Check the PRAM battery.
Reset the start-up disk.
Repairing disk permissions is never a bad idea.
Try booting to an installer disk, or a utility disk such as Disk Warrior.
As example: last week my spare Mac (DA) saw three drives, one master, two slaves, all on an ACARD 6280 controller card. Just now, as I fired it up to reply to your post, it refused to see the first slave drive. Anywhere... Solution was to remove the second drive from the system, boot, note that the Mac now saw the first slave drive, replace the second slave drive into the system, boot again. Voila! Back again! A genius! Go figure!
