Internal Hard Drive Doesn't Work

I am going to buy a used MacBook Pro from a friend. The internal hard drive doens't work so they have OSX running from an external hard drive. I want to replace the internal hard drive with a new one but the person I am buying it from says that the Conection between the Motherboard and hard drive is messed up. Is there a connection between the Hard drive and motherboard that I can replace?

Anything with any Mass at all is connected with an orange plastic flex cable to damp out possible shock and vibration. You can't connect the drive directly to the motherboard and have it be removeable. Original iBooks did it that way, but replacing the drive was a total tear-down.
Check on ifixit for a tear-down procedure and a replacement cable for your exact computer.

  • Internal Hard Drive doesn't show up on Time Machine menu. Why???

So I recently bought a brand new MacBook G5 2.1 Ghz 1G RAM, and when I first set it up I had my external hard drive from my old PC laptop hooked up to and it instantly asked if I wanted to use it for my Time Machine disk. I said yes, but it then prompted me to reformat (delete) everything on the external drive.
I tried later to use the internal hard drive as the Time Machine disk, but now it doesn't even show up when I look for it in system preferences as an option. Only the external hard drive (Maxtor OneTouch4 500G).
Does anyone know how to make the internal drive appear again so I don't have to reformat my external drive?

yeah, I read in a pdf manual that you couldn't use the startup disk to backup, but I could almost swear I saw either Macintosh HD or something like that on the disk options menu when I first started up. Maybe I saw something else.
So then there's no way to backup without an external drive of some sort? Do you know if it's possible to format a drive so that half of it is Mac compatible?
that's possible but you'll have to reformat it first which will wipe it out. when you reformat it set the partition scheme to GUID and set the number of partitions to two. format one as FAT so that it works with windows and the other as mac Os extended journaled so that it can be used with Time machine.

  • No internal hard drives seem to work! Please help!

    Hello,
I'm really hoping someone can help with this as I am losing my mind! I wanted to upgrade the internal hard drive of my 2009 Macbook Pro from the stock 250GB to a 500GB. The first try was with a Western Digital Scorpio Black (7200 RPM), the second try was with a Hitachi 5400 RPM, and the last try was with a Hitachi 7200 RPM. None of these have worked. I first noticed the problems when trying to perform a backup. Both Time Machine and SuperDuper would fail. When I tried the first drive, the OS loaded fine. But after install, the system lagged really bad. Opening applications would take much longer than they had before and even opening new windows, writing files and such seemed to cause the system to choke. Removing the hard drive and running from an external enclosure produced the same results. The drive checked out in Disk Utility and Disk Warrior. So at this point, I assumed there was something wrong with the drive. Fast forward to the second drive...At first, everything seemed fine except that I was not able to complete a backup via Time Machine or SuperDuper. However, now I was having a rough time even getting the OS installed with the drive in the computer or plugged in via an enclosure. I tried using the restore disks, a retail copy of 10.6, and a disk image of 10.6 as well. On the off chance that the OS did install completely, the system would revert back to its laggy behavior. I just thought I had EXTREMELY bad luck and purchased another drive. Same results across the board.
During attempts at backups, the system would lock up and I would have to to a hard shutdown. After that, Disk Warrior would usually find a boatload of errors to fix. But it would successfully repair.
I should also mention that I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8GB as well. In fact, I suspected a RAM issue, so I even bought an extra set of a different brand! The first set was from RamJet and the next was Patriot RAM. In addition, I tried using single RAM sticks; one in each bay at different times.
The laptop is at the Apple Store now. But the "genius" thinks it's a bad hard drive! I tried explaining to him that this was the THIRD hard drive to go in and that the one that was in worked perfectly when using it to boot up an iMac. I did ask him to replace the SATA cable as well thinking that maybe something might be wrong with that. But at the same time, the computer had its issues while the hard drive was in an external enclosure as well. Could it be that these newer Macbook Pro's are just really picky about what drives go in? Or am I looking at some other strange problem? Everything was working just fine before the attempted upgrade.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Assuming that you've already tried the brightness controls, you can try an SMC and PRAM resets.

  • External hard drive doesn't work on any other machine but my Mac since I connected it to the Mac

My external hard drive used to work on any machine. I watched movies on my tv, putted the movies on the hard drive using my pc. Since I connected it to my new MacBook Air, it doesn't connect to anything else anymore! I hope it's something in settings witch I accedentely clicked on (something with privacy so it can only connect to my Mac or something like that). Does anyone know how this happend/how to fix it?
PS. Maybe its important, I use it for Time Machine as well. Before I used that, it deleted my whole hard drive whitch really ****** me off. Now I got new stuff on it. Maybe my Mac is just claiming it to keep the hard disk for itself?

    One can't read the other.
Just to be clear Mac's can read/write FAT32 but windows cannot use OS X Extended. So to use a drive on both systems it needs to be formatted FAT32
FAT32 does have limitations and possibly the best solution is to use NTFS, a more modern, robust filesystem. The drawback here is that OS X does not natively read NTFS so a third party kernel extension is needed.

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks, my Maxtor external hard drive doesn't work. What gives ?

Since I upgraded to Mavericks, my Maxtor external
Hard drive does not work. It is FireWire to
Thunderbolt . When I connect it it crashes. What
    Gives ?j

Maxtor, must be an old one.
There is a disconnect occurrence in some cases with FIREWIRE ext. HD and Mavericks.
(indications mentioned on the Mavericks board)
This is known and being looked into.
Ive looked into this much myself.
Suggest using another Mac and offloading data onto a USB3 and using same until there is resolution.
Any normal USB ext. HD is working fine.
    Peace

  • External Hard Drive doesn't work after Time Machine cancelation

    First post on the forum.
So far i've had 2 hard drives broken because of a simple Time Machine.
I own a MBP and an HP so my hard drives usually have 2 partitions, one for mac, the other for pc. About a month or so i was doing a Time Machine on my Iomega 1TB (the partition used for the time machine is formatted in Mac Os Expanded (with journaling)),  and, because the time machine was extremely slow i stopped it. Then came the problems. I tried to connect the Iomega to the mac, but the partition in which i had the time machine doesn't mount. the other partition is mountable and i even managed to delete some files in it, so it worked. But now the partitions don't mount. I can still see the two partitions in Disk Utility, with the correct names i gave them, but cannot mount.
Right now i don't have the disk with me because i went to a "professional" to try and at least recover my files. What a joke that was. First they told me they had my recovered files and them the files were not mine. The switched the disks and gave me someone elses files. And now they ask me for 1100$ to recover my files because it is a hardware malfunction. Obviously i dont have that amount of money available and i cannot afford the recovery atm, and i do not believe that a software can cause hardware to fail. (just guessing)
Resume: 1 external hard drive, with 2 partitions, one mac os expanded and the other is a Windows NT Filesystem. None of the partitions are corrently mounting on mac but the disk utility recognizes the partitions and the names i gave them.
So guys can u help a poor little girl that needs her photographies so that she can go and show her portfolio to get a job. :/
    Kinda desperate at this point.
ps: sorry for bad english, second language

  • External hard drive doesn't work on iMac, does work on PC

    Hi everyone.
I have an external hard drive which is formatted with ExFat. I recently put all my stuff on it as my MacBook Pro was sent to repair. So it obviously works with OSX. I also put stuff from my PC, and have tested it several times. Compatibale with both! I then left it alone for a while and tried connecting it to my iMac. It doesn't read it, not in desktop, not in Finder. I went to Disk Utility and there it is, but unable to mount. I tried verifying it and it said it needed to repair. I repaired, but it quit the repair and said that I needed to format the hard drive. I tried connecting it to my PC and it works like a charm. I can't, for the life of me, figure out why my PC can read it, but my iMac cannot, since I've used it with both just two weeks ago. I tried several USB ports, no luck. I tried pretty much everything, and since I have everything on it I'm in despair, as I have absolutely no free space on my PC, so I can't transfer my data to that, and I'm fearful that the external drive will collapse any minute now. ANY suggestions?
P.S. I recently updated my OSX, still no luck. And I might want to add that the ExFat is a partition, the only partition on my external, taking up all 1 TB. But again, I used it just as it is two weeks ago without any issues.
    Magnus

I currently only have the one cable. But somehow, while I typed the original post, the hard drive popped up, so as of now the problem's been solved. I have no idea how, whatsoever.

    Ps. Sorry for my English

Thanks for the tip, Master. I had the same experience as DDJAN. Logic, instinct, experience, whatever was leading me in the direction of the actions you took, but I thought I'd check online first to see if anyone else had encountered this and if there was any support available. Your post gave that warm-fuzzy feeling that my problem was not unique, the situation not hopeless and things were on the way to being addressed!
FWIW, for any other subsequent viewers, when I first started the external HDD under Vista and entered the password I'd configured using my previous XP machine, I got the below error message:
"INI Entries in the path <drive-letter>:\ONSPCCDH.INI are not matching with the Inquiry Data. Make sure the INI file has the correct entry."

  • External hard drive doesn't work anymore... Why?

Hi, I have been using a WD Elements I tb external hard drive on my MBP and it worked fine for a year and a half. However, my son played with it until I caught him and now, when I plug it in my computer, the MBP doesn't recognize the HD. The HD works fine (lights are on and I hear a spinning sound, and feel it work) but it doesn't appear in my Finder. I can, however, repair it in Disk Utilities and I am deleting its contents right now. Anything else I should do. I really don't want to buy another one.
I am using Mountain Lion (until Mavericks comes ) 10.8.4, 2 GHz Intel Core i&, 4 gig 1333 MHz, DDR3.
    Any help would be welcomed

It sounds like the drive may be failing. Do not attempt to do anything more with it .
If there is any chance of recovery at all your best bet is Prosoft Data Rescue II . There is a free trial to see if it can recover what you need. But don't do another process on that drive until you've downloaded and run it.

  • External hard drive doesn't work on other macs.

So I've got this external hard drive (WD Elements) and basically have only used it for my macbook pro.  Today I tried it with an imac, and it didn't work.  The computer recognized it, but it wouldn't let me move any files onto the hard drive.  There was no error message or anything; it just didn't work and made that ping sound.  You know the one you get when you clicked somewhere you weren't supposed to?  That sound.
I thought maybe it was a formatting thing, because the disk utility verification said it's "formatted for use in Windows 7," but then how is it working on my macbook?
Anyway, I feel like there's a really obvious solution for this, but I can't seem to figure it out, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like your hard drive is formatted NTFS, Mac's can read those type of drives, but unable to write to them without special software.
Take a look at this link, http://www.macbreaker.com/2012/02/enable-write-for-ntfs-hard-drives-on.html

i have a usb 3.0 hard drive and a laptop with usb 3.0 port.
when the hard drive is connected to the usb 3.0 port, the drive could not be found.
the dmesg output is listed below.

    1) the usb 3.0 hard drive can be found when connected to usb 2.0 port.
    2) the usb 2.0 hard drive can be found when connected to usb 3.0 port.
    3) mouse works when connected to the usb 3.0 port.
it seems that it is not the linux driver's problem, because the mouse could work and the hard drive is found due to the dmesg.
    is this a bug?
    would someone help me?
    thank you!

tail -f /var/log/messages.log is similar to the dmesg.
    1) I have a usb 2.0 hard drive which could use the usb 3.0 port.
    2) I remeber x230 with windows XP could use my usb 3.0 hard drive with the usb 3.0 port
    3) so, it is a problem of archlinux rather than hardware?
    thank you!

  • WD Hard Drive doesn't work via Fire Wire to Mac OSX Lion or Mountain Lion.

I have a 1 terrabyte WD Hard Drive that works perfectly fine connected to Snow Leopard but isn't even recognized by any Mac running Mountain lion!!!
    How do I fix this?????

I agree with alkhater. From reading other posts about the issue (Googled "Western Digital hard drive not appearing in Disk Utility") it sounds like you need to update your driver. If you need help locating the correct driver, please let us know the exact hard drive that you have.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't work

I have a the blackbook and a 200GB Cintre ZDisc External Hard Drive. When I connect the EHD to my Macbook, I can view all the files on it, but when I try opening or copying one to my computer (they're mostly videos and mp3's), the program will open and the spinning rainbow wheel comes up, but the file won't play and the program freezes.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Black Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Is your external formated using NTFS, if that is, then that could be the problem.
Try to get info on your external. Or if it is connect to your pc now, go to my computer, right click and select properties, and see what kind of format that EHD has.
NTFS is a read only for Mac OS X and if you want to swap data you must re-format it using fat-32.
Be advised Fat 32 is not support file bigger than 4 Gb, so you might encounter problem when saving or moving file that bigger than the 4 Gb limit.
    Good Luck

  • Dear oh dear, my new internal hard drive doesn't seem to fit

My sad little hard drive broke a few days ago, so I bought a Western Digital WD2500BEVE 250gb, transferred the little case and tab from my old one and slipped it into the slot. All seems well except that it appears to need to go a fraction of a millimeter further in so that I can get the L-shaped metal brace screwed back in. I know that the WD hard drive is the correct size - maybe I'm aligning it wrong?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
WD2500BEVE is listed as EIDE which suggests it is not the SATA drive. This listing:
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=346
Shows that the SATA drive is model:
    WD2500BEVS
When you click on SATA 1.5 Gbs.
That's the drive you wanted for a MacBook. iBooks can take the model drive you got, but not MacBooks.
