Internal Harddrive not visible or bootable????

System Profile info, Model - iMac7,1, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Dou, 4GB DDR2, 800Mhz Bus, OSX 10.6.5
Last week my iMac started taking a long time to boot up. I reinstalled a backup from bootcamp. It work for a couple of days then starting hanging up after the start up chime. When I turned it on the apple logo would come up with the spinning pin wheel along with a progress indicator bar (this was new) showing the progress for the start up. So I installed OS on one of my external HD with the intent to copy clone it to the internal. While building the external HD, both internal and external drives were visible in the finder. Now that I have the external up and running, the internal HD does not show up in Finder or System Profile/ Hardware. I used other software to show invisible files, and Disk Utility. Neither could detect the internal HD. I have owned this iMac for 3 yrs and one month.
This is the information from System Profiler / Hardware/Serial-ATA
Intel ICH8-M AHCI:
Vendor: Intel
Product: ICH8-M AHCI
Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
Description: AHCI Version 1.10 Supported
Thanks

Hi P-T
Sounds to me like the Hard Drive has died and needs to be replaced.
To have the Hard Drive replaced, simple call your locate an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
in North America, see > http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
or for World Wide service, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
If your technically inclined and would like to replace the Hard Drive yourself, google around there are plenty of good Video's and DIY's out.

I would like to also suggest using a WD Caviar Blue as a replacement Drive instead of a WD Caviar Black or a Seagate, it is my experience that they run cooler, quieter and are better suited for the all-in-one desktop systems.

  • Internal Drive not visible

A day after installation of Leopard, my second internal drive (bought from Apple) has disappeared from Finder and from my desktop. Applications that know that it is there (e.g., iPhoto) can open files on the drive correctly, Disk Utility can see it and says it is mounted and OK, and a second Mac running Leopard on my network can see the second hard drive. However, I cannot save any new files to it, since Finder (or the "Save" dialog boxes) do not show it. Also, it is visible, but greyed out on a Mac on my network that is running Tiger.
I called Apple and they suggested that if I reformat it it might reappear, but this seems a bit extreme. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. However, I didn't get a chance to try that, as I finally found another posting that addressed the issue a few minutes after I gave up searching and posted my own question. That posting was:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1208729&tstart=90#5705189
I used the suggested script to change the "visibility" attribute of the drive that had disappeared and it worked great.

  • [SOLVED] BSPWM: internal paritions not visible in thunar

    Hi,
I have another problem with bspwm. When I use bspwm there are no internal partitions visible in thunar side bar under "devices", only File system, Places, Network.
I start bspwm using slim and I do "exec dbus-launch bspwm" in my .xinitrc. I've also tried without dbus-launch, but no luck.
In other WMs everything works fine, I can see internal partitions of my hdd in thunar.

  • New internal harddrive not recognised by macbook!

    Hi,
Sorry to make a new thread on the subject but I've looked around the web and whilst finding similar threads I havnt found an answer to help me so any advise would be much appreciated!
I’ve got a macbook A1181 2.16ghz core 2 duo built in 2007. I got the harddrive replaced in early 2010 when it failed (clicking noise etc) at the Apple store where they replaced the original with a Hitachi 160gb 5400 rpm.
Recently this hdd failed too (clicking noise etc). I’ve got a back up on the time machine on an external hdd so getting data back shouldn't be a problem.
Rather than go to the Apple store again (seeing as they stopped giving outhdds early 2011) I thought I’d buy and replace my own hdd. I bought a WD Scorpio Blue 320gb WD3200BPVT after reading many reviews and forums etc.
I followed the instructions on the Apple pdf guide to replacing hdds, booted up the macbook with the snow leopard disk (I don’t have any other system disks) but I can’t install Snow Leopard or even erase/format the hdd as disk utility wont recognise the hdd, only the disk (dvd/optical) drive.
Starting to lose hope as to what to do (aside from forking out a lot of cash on a new macbook), any help or advise would be much appreciated! Just want to get my mac working again
    Thanks in advance

Also, just thought I'd ask again but has anyone successfully replaced the harddrive in a macbook of same age and model and if so, what make and model of harddrive?
I did one on a 2009 Macbook; OWC (macsales.com) has excellent how-to videos on their site; they also carry hard drives, RAM, etc. and speak Mac. I believe they ship internationally - you can check on that.
Here is the link to the how to:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
(scroll down; yours should be the white/black Macbook?)

  • Westerndigital internal harddrive is not recognised

    Hi there,
I have tried to replace my old hitachi internal harddrive in a mid2010 macbookpro 13inches with a westerndigital internal harddrive designed for osx lion.
Unfortunately, this is not recognised once i insert it in.
Has anybody had this type of problem? How did u sort it out?
Alternatively, what other internal hard disk would u advice?
Wd claims it s apple's fault as they are required to provide the right drivers with the software updates.
Unfortunately, apple does not believe so.
The hardrive is not faulty as i have been using as an external harddrive so far.
Your help would be really appreciated. Many thanks in advance. Luigi

    >> how do I know if the cable i am gonna will not have the same issue
You don't, until it's replaced & solves the problem, although that's a fairly regular problem on these forums. It's more common though, for the drive to be visible in DU, & yet fail to start up properly, or perhaps show as a startup option... & your new drive is no faster than the original, so it's hard to say for sure without replacing one or the other. I'd plump for the drive, if it were me, despite it working externally.

  • E-Recruiting - Internal Candidates not displayed in candidate search, job postings not visible for internal candidates in job search

    Hi Friends,
We are on EREC standalone model. Initial data transfer between HR to EREC master data using PFAL is done.
All employees have got NA, CP, US, BP in HRP 1001 in EREC system.
Change pointers are also activated in HCM system, now current master data changes are also in reflecting in EREC system thro IDOC posting.
But when recruiter logs into portal and does a candidate search, no internal candidates are appearing ?
    1) What needs to be done for internal candidates to visible during candidate search ?
    2) Also while logged as internal candidate, released requisitions are not visible for internal candidates while they try to search for internal job postings ?
    Kindly provide your inputs.

  • Time Capsule internal hard drive not visible

I have one of the older 500GB TC. It worked fine for a year then I decided to wipe the hard drive to erase the contents. I stopped the process in the middle of clearing the hard drive because it was going on about 8 hours. Every since then the TC works fine as a wireless router, but the internal hard drive is not visible. It won't do any back ups and it's not visible in the Airport program.
    Any suggestions?

  • 2nd Internal Hard Disk Not visible on desktop

    Hello,
Last night I was trying to rename some files and my G5 was acting very slowly. I relaunched the finder and it seemed to fix the problem. I resumed renaming files and it kept locking up. After the fourth time this happened, the system locked up and I pushed the front power button until the system shut down. When I turned the computer back on, my second internal hard drive was not visible. I looked in disk utility and did not see it, and it is also not visible in about this mac. Help!!!

    HI
I have a similar problem that the second drive does not always appear on starting up from cold but usualy appears on a hot restart
second drive is a Hitachi HDS725050KLA360 primary drive: HDS725050KLA360 (465.76 GB)
    (Telephone support was useless)
It has been operating since March Photoshop and Aperture applications I do power down every night.
And back up to external just in case I loose it but would prefer to have more confidence in its reliability
Has anyone else had similar experience ? and any idea what might be the cause?

  • Internal hard disk is not visible in disk utility in Macbook Pro

    Hi All,
I am trying to repair my mac. But in disk utility, the hard disk is not visible to proceed. Its showing disk0 -> volume with only 1.79GB. and all the options are disabled. The capacity of my mac book pro was 500GB.
Please help me in solving this issue
    Thanks in advance....

So you've booted into your Recovery partition and you don't see any drives in Disk Utility to select in Recovery mode?
If the drive cannot be repaired, it's likely dead and you'll need to purchase a new internal drive.
    Good luck,

  • Disc utility can not verify my internal harddrive

My disc utility cannot verify the internal harddrive and says that it needs to be repaired, however the repair button is greyed out. I have been told that I need the install a disc to repair the harddrive, my computer is running 10.4 Tiger, can I buy a 10.5 Leopard disc to install and repair the harddrive? or does it have to be the original 10.4 disc which unfortunately I no longer have? if so do you know where I can buy a 10.4 disc?
    Thanks

Hi Rainbow King, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It's supposed to be OK to use a Leopard Install Disk to Repair Tiger HDDs, (though not Repair Permissions with it), but I've had real problems when I did.
    Other options are...
    A. Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    B. Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    C. Tough without the Tiger Disk problems, but try fsck...
To use fsck, you must run it from the command line. Unlike using your mouse to open an application to do something, you'll need to type a text command at the prompt (#) to tell fsck what to do. The Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities) and single-user mode are two examples of command-line interfaces in which you can type such commands. To use fsck:
    1. Start up your computer in single-user mode to reach the command line. Hold CMD+s keys down at bootup.
Note: If necessary, perform a forced restart as described in the Emergency Troubleshooting Handbook that came with your computer. On desktop computers, you can do this by pressing the reset/interrupt button (if there is one) or holding down the power button for several seconds. On portable computers, simultaneously press the Command-Control-power keys. If your portable computer doesn't restart with this method, you may need to reset the Power Manager.
    2. At the command-line prompt, type /sbin/fsck -fy
(SPACE between fsck AND -fy important)
    3. Press Return. fsck will go through five "phases" and then return information about your disk's use and fragmentation. Once it finishes, it'll display this message if no issue is found:

The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK
If fsck found issues and has altered, repaired, or fixed anything, it will display this message:
*** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command you typed in step 2 until fsck tells you that your volume appears to be OK (first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues, so this is a normal thing to do).
    4. When fsck reports that your volume is OK, type reboot at the prompt and then press Return.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

  • Internal Hard Drive is not visible in Finder or Desktop or anywhere

The problem first and then the details.
I cannot see my systems hard drive, No icon shows up on the desktop, and it is not visible in the Finder.
It does however show up in Disk Utility.
I have repaired permissions and repaired the disk, both from within the OS and also from the install disc during a reboot.
Not here are some details. This is both a fresh install of the OS AND a brand new drive. I just had it installed today and then reinstalled the OS.
While going thru the process of reinstalling all my software, something froze for no good reason, and I eventually had to force quit the finder and when the system wouldn't shut down, I had to physically power it off.
Upon rebooting, my systems HD is no longer visible.
I suppose I can try and reinstall again, but I feel like there has to be a smarter way to deal with this.
    Any suggestions?

Have you confirmed that in Finder > Finder menu > Preferences > General and Sidebar tabs that the boxes to show hard disks are checked?
Assuming they are checked, you may a victim of the 'invisible drive' problem. See Francine's helpful tutorial for the fix:

  • Attatching internal harddrives to my Mac-using Firewire 800 or Esata

I would like to attach internal harddrives to my mac-book pro so that I can back up work, large files from video / raw pictures, etc. I have heard people doing this with 7200 rpm internal drives. How would I connect them to my Mac?
The solutions such as VANTEC NexStar NST-D200SU Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" USB2.0 seem to have a lot of overheating issues, and the firewire hard drives that are for sale are a bit expensive considering how much data I want to back up.
Any suggestions, or bite the bullet and spend the $$ on the more expensive solutions? Thanks,

You cannot install additional hard drives inside a MBP, so I'm assuming you mean external drives. See the following:
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
Unfortunately, I have no idea where you would purchase any of the above in Cambodia.

  • HT1948 Does the macbook use the internal harddrive when booting from usb and when fully booted?

I wonder if the Macbook Air uses the internal SSD drive when booting Mac OSX lion 10.8.2 from a bootable USB stick?
I am suspecting the internal harddrive is faulty because it gives me random system freeze ups during normal use, making me hold the power button to shut it down. So I'm wondering if I boot my macbook from a bootable USB, if the internal drive is used for caching or anything?

    What i'm doing when it freezes is totally random. I am not having any programs open, but for example just clicking on the apple icon or starting up safari, there seems to be no specific program that crashes it. I'm still running without a freeze up after I fixed the drive permissions with Disk Utility. But here is Etrecheck;

  • No boot sector on internal hard drive and No bootable devices.

Hello, I hope someone can help me.
I have a dell inspiron 1525. I recently replaced on of my memory 512mb modules with a 2gb memory module. At the same time I change the 120gb harddrive and upgraded it to a 320gb harddrive. After doing this when I start the computer I receive the message:
"No boot sector on internal harddrive".
"No bootable devices - - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility, Press F5 to run onboard diagnostic".
I have tried to change boot sequence and tried to boot from the Windows Vista Home Basic 32BIT. Regretablly with no results. If there is anyone who can guide me and help me to solve this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanking you in advance.

Whenever we get this error "No boot sector on internal hard drive", it means that our hard drive has no partition/ boot sector to boot/ start operating system (Windows).
The ultimate solution is to install Windows from beginning either by using CD/DVD or USB bootable flash drive. You need to have windows installation disc or bootable flash drive for that.

Is there any seeting to change that...?

    Hello Abhishek,
You are not getting the point. AL11 (prog. RSWATCH0) is a simple report used to display the file contents.
There is a limitation to the maximum length of the file line AL11 can DISPLAY (i.e., 512 characters after applying the notes).
Please understand what you are seeing in AL11 is the 1st 512 characters of the file width & not the entire file width.
    Hope you get the point.
