Internal HD disappeared

I have the Xserve with the server HD and the extra two internal hard drives. One of the hard drives has disappeared. Disk Utility can see it, but the icon ofd ther disk is like an unknown icon. Yet if I verify or repair the disk Disk Utility says the disk is fine and needs no repairs. If I unmount the disk it is shown greyed out as a disk icon, if I mount it back again the icon turns into a white unidentified icon. Disk Utility recognises it is Max OsX Extended (journaled) just as the other drive. It recognises the capacity (931G) but no space available ot used, no folder counts and no other information.
Incidentally, in work group manager it shows up, with the correct usage information.
Any suggestions?
antonio

Repartitioning may be a good next step. If you can access all the files, copy them to two different drives. (So you have 2 copies, for redundancy.) (And verify that the data is valid, by opening a few files.)
Once you have those copies, repartition the drive.
There may be other ways to resolve your issue, but if you can access the data and make the copies, this way may be the quickest.
And then from that point on, make sure you're making daily backups of that drive so you don't run into this trouble again.
A general rule is that if you only have one copy of data, it is only temporary storage. (ie until the medium that holds it is gone.)

  • Internal HD disappeared from my iMac Desktop, & System Profiler

I use an iMac from 2011 running Mac O.S. X Version 10.6.8. It contains an internal SSD (the boot drive), and an internal 2TB hard drive called HD2.
The iMac underwent a diagnostic check at the Genius Bar last week, and everything checked out okay.
HD2 has disappeared from my desktop. Restarting the iMac has not brought it back.
The HD2 used to show up under Serial-ATA: Intel 6 Series Chipset in System Profiler, but no longer does.
Disc Utility no longer shows HD2.
Time Machine has been backing up both the SSD and HD2 on 6TB of external storage. But I do not see HD2, no matter how far back I go into Time Machine.
Spotlight searches do not turn up stuff that is on HD2.
I get a "The disk was not ejected properly" message when properly ejecting external drives.
Any idea what is going on?

If OS X iwas installed on HD2, you can start from an install dvd & use 'Restore From Time Machine Backup' with the external as the target. For data files, I'd use TM's interface if possible : try Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions 17. How can I see my backups, or the Backups for a different Mac?
since it seemingly doesn't show as expected.

  • Internal Drives Disappeared- Help

G4/1.0 DP MDD with four drives filling the internal bays. The two in the upper bay, one with the OS, show up fine. The two in the lower bay, under the DVD drive, which were showing up fine after installing 10.4.7 about ten days ago have suddenly disappeared. They don't show up under disk utility or System Profiler either. Booting with Disk Warrior, one of the drives appears on the list and DW says it is shown on the desktop, but it's not. Repaired the directory, but still nothing. Finder prefs are to show all drives.
I repaired permissions many times, zapped Pram, replaced battery, disconected the drives, checked the jumpers and reseated the connections and all seems fine. About three times over the last year, using 10.3.8 - 10.4.4 - 10.4.7, these drives disappeared temporarily, but returned upon a restart. Now they seem to be gone for good, but there must be something else I can do to try and get these drives to show up/mount on the desktop. Any ideas?? My next step is to remove the drives and put them in cases to check them, but I have a feeling that the drives are OK and there's something else going on here. I think the bus that these drives are attached to are slower than the main bus, but I only use these drives for backup and fortunately most of the info is old and not important. Still, I'd like to solve this puzzle. BTW all other types of external drives, Firewire, SCSI, USB are all working fine and I disconnected everything peripheral from the CPU to troubleshoot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    MacScott
    G4/1.0 DP MDD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I had the exact same issue and did nearly all of what
you did, which are the typical troubleshooting
    procedures.
This worked for me: replace the PATA cable with a
fresh one that is NOT a cable select IDE cable. The
cable select IDE has a little sliver cut from a
segment of the ribbon that makes the driver CS no
    matter what the jumper setting.
I have no idea why this worked but it did. I have
    not had a problem since.
Thanks, but I'm a little confused. So a new cable for each drive or are there doubles? Is this a universal cable Mac/pc? Maybe the cable that came with the drive (that I probably threw away)? Do you know the link of a supplier? Would any Apple store have these??
Knowing why this worked would relieve a little anxiety. Do these cables go bad just sitting in the cpu?
Anyway I googled PATA and I'm still not sure if I'd know the difference between a cable select and a non CS. I'll continue my research.
    Thanks again!
Hmmm, swapping the drives. Maybe I'll try this before I swap the cables.
    Thanks,

  • Internal DVD disappears including from ATA and Burning in Mac info

I have an open ticket on this issue, my internal DVD appears and disappears. I'm not sure if this is a loose internal connection or a firmware issue. If it is a loose connection, I guess that I will have to send it back to Apple for repair. I understand that disassembly is a pain.
The issue may have to do do with connecting to external Firewire drives. Has anyone ran into something similar? I expect to play with this for a few days until I am more confident as to the real issue and would appreciate any input. Apple support has been great. But, I've done tech support and really want to have the issue nailed down before I send the Mac in for repairs.

The computer is now running correctly and the DVD issue is no longer occurring. My best guess, at this time, is that it was something like the Windows registry "noide" issue. In other words one of the setup scripts was hashed for some reason or another. As I believe these rewrite themselves, the issue was self repairing.
No one else seems to have had the issue, so it was probably specific to my system. Should someone else have this issue, I suggest disconnecting the computer from all connections including power overnight. this seemed to temporarily fix the issue the first two times. The third time was several days ago and it is still working correctly. I will add to this thread if I find anything new

  • Internal drive disappeared !

    Help! my drive evacuated !
My external turned Internal 160 WD drive seems to have disappeared from the desktop. Although it shows up in the Utilities window, when I try to run repair disk, it prompts me that the drive cannot be found.
What happened to my drive ??? Anybody... ??
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.1)
    G4   Mac OS X (10.3.1)

    Hi Rachna:
Some older G4s do have a limitation on how large a drive they recognize (I think the limit is 128GB), and generally the response to this is to partition the drive into chunks smaller than this, which is something Disk Utility should be able to handle.
If it were to happen again, the first thing I'd try is to unplug the cables from the drive, then reconnect them (turn the computer off first, of course, but you can leave it plugged in so that the hardware is properly grounded). If that doesn't work, then Disk Warrior often will see a drive whose directory has become too corrupted for it to mount under OS X.

  • Image icon on internal frame disappearing and re-appearing

I have just upgraded to jdk 1.4.1-b21 from 1.4.0_01-b03 and have noticed that after adding an Internal Frame to a desktop and moving the mouse over the image icon in the left hand corner the image disappears. The image re-appears again, once I presume, when the desktop and its frames are repainted.
Is this a bug or has something changed between the two jdk's.
    Thanks.
    Steve.

    Hi,
I attempted the Disk Utility Repair but it did not work.
So I disabled the application 'StickyWindows' and this resolved the problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac G5's 2nd Internal Drive disappears

    Hi,
    I have a G5 with 2 internal drives,
one is called STARTUP and has apps, etc.
The 2nd is/was called MEDIA and had lots of documents
and for some reason has disappeared from my desktop
I did a restart and used Disk Utility but I am not finding it
    Any suggestions please?...thank you

    Hi Evan Kreeger1-
If DU doesn't see it that is usually not a good thing.
Before panicking you might want to open the Mac up and check all of the connections to the drive.

  • Internal drive disappeared. Shows up as "Media" & 0 bytes

I recently installed a 120GB SSD drive instead of my 640GB rotational hard disk drive. I then removed my optical drive, and put the 640GB drive in its place using an internal adaptor that fits into that space. I installed OS X on the 120GB drive. Everything worked fine for a few days and all my data was intact in the older 640GB drive. I was able to copy files from it and copy files out of it without any problems.
I was copying some files over from the 640GB drive to the new SSD drive when things started to slow down. So I restared my laptop and I got an error message which said "Your disk is not initialized" When I click on Initialize it shows me disk utiility where my older 640GB drive shows up as "Media" with no partitions or data on it and a total capacity of 0 bytes.
I am unable to erase, partition or anything else on this drive. In system information I see that the Macbook pro is aware that a drive is attached to the SATA interface and also that it's rotational media. But I am unable to use the drive or access any of my data.
Anyone know what I can do? Did my HDD crash?
Attached screenshots of Disk Utility and Sytem Information

Yes, even tried it on a PC, couldn't be identified. Bought a Seagate Baraccuda, and it was up and running in no time, super quiet (the other one was grinding badly). So it was the drive after all...
DirectCanada.com are charging me 15% restocking fee. I should have read their small print before buying from them! Got the Seagate at Best Buy, easier to deal with someone face to face. Internet companies aren't always a good deal in the end.

  • Internal Speakers Disappeared

I have a MacBook Pro, purchased in September 2009.
Yesterday I used headphones. This morning, the internal speakers are gone. I've seen forum after forum online and none of the fixes work.
It doesn't appear to be a case of the computer "thinking" that the headphones are still plugged in as the light isn't on and "Sound" (in System Preferences) recognizes when the headphones are plugged in and when they are not. Thus, I don't think any of the toothpick or paper clip fixes are appropriate.
I tried the ALT-APPLE-P-R (or whatever it was) "fix" - nada.
This is ridiculous. Judging from the forums "out there," this has been a problem for several years. Shouldn't Apple just post a fix instead of suggesting that we have to pay $49 for someone to tell us what it is?
Any ideas on other solutions????? HELP!!!!!!

Usually this occurs when the head phones are pulled out to quickly. But since you have reset the PRAM (Command-Option-P-R) and the system does not recognize the headphones being connected I can only offer one solution before calling the AppleCare support group.
The following knowledge base article will assist you in reseting the systems SMC (System Management Controller).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer. Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter does not change states or temporarily turn-off when you reset the SMC.

  • Internal speakers disappear when headphones are removed

My built in mac book speakers disappear when I remove my headphone. The system preferences says that they are not present. I've tried restarting and resetting pram. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried blowing into the headphone jack? There could be an accumulation of dust in there.

  • MacBook Pro internal speakers disappeared and keyboard won't light up

yesterday I realized my internal speakers were not working on my MacBook Pro. The red light comes off in the headphone jack. I tried to plug my headphones and take them out to get my computer to recognize the internal speaker but nothing seems to be working. i was using mountain lion so I decided to install yosemite to see if that would fix my problem but it did not. In fact this morning after Yosemite was installed I noticed that my keyboard lights were also "locked" just like my speakers. I tried the PRAM reboot and the sudo terminal code but none of these have worked so far... Any ideas of what I could do?
I Would like to specify that in my preferences for sound nothing is muted not is the wrong device selected, there are no devices available as if my internal speakers had disapeared

    1. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
Make sure that CH1 and CH2 volume sliders are at the middle and matched.
    2. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects
        Play sound effects through:
Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device".
If this does not help, you have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
    Best.

  • HT201366 The second hard driver (internal) was disappeared in my MacPro, after this update.

I found an error message, "the second hard disk was ejected", when my MacPro was resrarted after this security update 2013-003 .
The HD was diappreared in the system.  I cannot find it in finder, disk utility, and terminal.
The other problem I just found is that some applications working with Java are not working.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Updated the video card firmware
    Sounds odd.
A more complete list of hardware of course helps.
Every new OS puts more stress on hardware resources and can turn up what worked but marginally so.
I see a lot of threads with OWC FBDIMMs showing half their capacity for one or two DIMMs.
They also can run too hot. Hence using SmcFancontrol 2.2.
    Monitor things with Temperature Monitor
And I always reformat hard drives when it is time for a new OS.
Backup and clone the sytem first, or leave as is and opportunity for a new hard drive.
Then test it out and only later import and migrate.
The Mac Pro often needs boost the fans slightly and can suffer from dust (X1900 especially).
8800GTs have always been known to fail.
You may have 7300GT? those are old in the tooth.
If OS X 10.5 was running off an Apple RAID, the RAID needs to be created with 10.6 or it won't function and install properly. But you don't have RAID or didn't mention one.

  • Internal Drives Disappear & Boot Problems

I have a Quad Core, I had 4 drives in it. All 500 Gig Maxtor Drives.
Anytime the computer would lock up and be force reset stuff would act funny on one of the drives, it finally failed mechanically.
Shortly after another drive had errors that couldn't be resolved and the drive had to be reformatted, it was being used as a time machine drive.
I received a replacement drive from Maxtor and it wouldn't function in the machine. After dozens of tries I got it to work so I could initialize it.
I am not able to put 3 drives in the machine.
Anytime I do I just get a white screen - no apple, no circle loading pattern.
When I get the white screen the only key-sequence that's accepted is the PRAM Zap COMMAND/OPTION/P/R. No other key sequence is able to be used....no safe boot, so single user, no option boot, etc.
All of the drives work fine when connected to any computer using a USB cable/power adapter that's distributed by Other World Computing.
At this time I can only use 2 drives inside the machine at one time.
Are there any tests or diagnostics I can run to learn if there is any kind of ATA controller board or logic board?
Please share any similar problems or learned solutions.

    Apple Hardware Test
    TechTool Deluxe or Pro
    Disk Warrior
    Intech Speedtools
    SuperDuper
    Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner
are some of the tools I use to maintain system and drives.
I have had 4 x MaxLine Pro 500GB units from OWC
I would pick up 4 x WD Caviar 640 $80 from OWC at this point.
Are you sure that you are repairing and dealing with directory corruption and corrupt files and journal when this happens? ie, not boot from the drive but from a backup or emergency?
Did you ever use Partition to setup new single partition and do a zero-all or test for bad sectors?
    Reset SMC?
Sounds more like it could be logicboard but only AHT and AppleCare can fully determine that.
A force restart is sure to damage the directory, volume information block, cache folders, and journaling.
The reason I replaced the MaxLines is they tend to run warmer, never below 40º even with SmcFanControl while WD drives, even Raptors are always in 28º winter and 35º summer.

  • Disappearing internal speakers

hi guys. i have recently come across the problem where sound no longer come out of my internal speaker. after checking various software etc, i looked in my system prefs > sound and in the sound effects panel, the only option is headphones and in output panel again only headphones are available.
this is an intenittent problem. sometimes it works fine, then, usually after being on for a while, the internal sound disappears! nightmare!!!
I have tiger and all updated, so everything is up to date (which i suppose could be the problem).
anyone else had the same issue, and if so, how did you fix it?
    much appreciated,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
This issue seems to be showing up here more and more over the past few months, but it seems more often than not, users have not come up with a solution; you may want to do a search here in the Usage folder for "sound" and/or "speakers" and I'm sure you'll find threads on the topic.
    Good luck.
