Internal HD Not Recognized?

In March, I bought a secondhand Macbook Pro mid-2010 from a friend (serial #73******ATN). It was working fine until this past week when I was using Gmail on Chrome and my browser froze. So I switched to a different application and a few seconds later, everything froze up and I got the lovely spinning pinwheel. So after waiting a while, I powered it off and restarted and then it was at the screen with the apple icon for a long long time, just loading and loading. So I tried to reboot a few times and it would just not get past the apple icon to the login screen.
I set it aside for a while and then tried the same thing (this was at home where I have a recognized network). Then instead of going to the loading apple icon screen, it told me to choose a network. My home network was not listed so I typed the name/pw in manually and it rejected it. I did this several times and I know from the past that what I typed was correct, so I do not know why it got rejected.
So then I powered it off for the night. I started it up in the morning and got the connect to network thing; powered off; took it to school (different network), started it. This time, it did not tell me to connect to the network. I got the infinitely loading apple icon. So I closed the lid (it did not go into hibernate as it should); left it there. I came back three hours later to find the battery had drained. When I plugged it in and restarted, all of a sudden, it worked again. I logged on and used it without problems for the next four hours. Took it home, and about one hour into my time at home, Gmail crashed again and then the rest of the apps crashed and ever since that, I have not been able to restart it. I have re-tried the whole draining-the-battery thing, to no avail.
Thinking it might be a corrupted HD, my friend and I bought a new HD, replaced the old one, stuck in the installation DVD, and were able to open the diagnostic thing. Lo and behold, the HD just won't show up. The only item visible was the installation DVD.
So we took out the new HD, put the old one in, and still the old one would not show up. So now we think it's something else like a cable. The best thing would probably be to go to the Apple Store, right? But I do not have Apple Care so would they still run a free diagnosis? Any other suggestions what to do? And why would it tell me to connect to network when at home, but not when at school?
P.S. I am fairly computer illiterate so I would appreciate breakdown of technical terms. Thanks a lot!

The seller should have also gave you the system discs that originally came with the computer per Apple's license agreement.  If not, you need to get them from him.  You need them to troubleshoot.  You can also get the system discs from Apple.
Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html
After you get the discs do the following -
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart your computer when done.
If you still cannot see your hard drive, you will need to purchase DiskWarrior which is known to find & see the hard drive.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

  • Internal disk not recognized, booting in safe mode fails too.

My computer was fine, randomly froze, so I held down the power till it shut down.
Since then I only get the grey screen when I try to start Mac OS up on the internal drive. I tried to repair the internal drive or start from it using the installation CD, but it doesn't recognize my internal HD drive anywhere. When there's no disk and I have the grey screen, the computer also makes a small, "booop, click, click, click" sound. Don't know if that helps but that's what I've got.
I've also tried starting the computer in safe mode. That fails and tells me something about the disk being immediately dependent on something. If it helps I can do it again and try to write it down.
Any help would be great thanks.

Hi AveryBazan & welcome to discussions...
Some or all of the following may be necessary - try in this order:
    1. Try resetting your PRAM/NVRAM ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US ). If everything isn't fixed, then continue to follow the steps here including resetting your SMC ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411 ) if necessary.
    2. Use Font Book to eliminate all bad and duplicate fonts.
    3. Reinstall (or install for the first time) the .6.1 and .6.2 updates by downloading and installing the combo updater ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
    4. Reinstall 10.6 using your Snow Leopard install DVD by installing Snow over Snow using the upgrade method. Test your system after returning to 10.6. If is good there, then you may not want to re-install the.6.1 & .6.2 updates - if you do, then use the combo updater again ( http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 ).
Still no joy, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

  • MacBook Pro Internal HDD Not Recognized

My late 2012 MacBook Pro does not seem to want to recognize internal hard drives any longer. I have pulled the original startup disk and installed it in an external hard drive case and the mac will now boot from that. The brand new replacement hard drive that I purchased (thinking the original was bad) won't show in the computer either. The mac was working fine and then crashed and refused to reboot. Thoughts on the problem? Sadly I'm very far removed from any physical mac support.
In the screen shot below you see /dev/disk0 which is the original drive connected externally and no mention of the new drive installed internally.

The symptoms point to a faulty internal connection, usually the SATA cable.  Replace that and you should be back in operation.
For a definitive assessment, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be FREE.
    Ciao.

  • New internal HD not recognized in LR 3

Drive is E: on a win7 desktop. That doesn't show on the left panel among the drives and isn't available for export. It is visible with the import dialogue and I was able to create a new catalog file on it. Exporting, all I can see starts with the C: desktop. No 'My Computer' or anything else. In the import dialog, with 'Copy' option, upper-right, the DESTINATION... I choose 'Other Destination' and it starts at desktop, no other drives available. In grid view I can see these drives: C: D: F: G: H: I: L: but not the E: drive I just added to the box.
How do I get LR to see my new E: drive? I rebooted everything a couple times.

There's a known bug which causes this problem, and it is caused by having too many icons on your desktop (seriously). Simple solution is to to a bit of desktop housekeeping, but you can also start typing the full path to the required drive in the "Folder" text box at the bottom on the browser box, that will bring the display of that drive back.
Best to do the desktop clean-up though, IMO.

  • Internal Mic not Working, external mic quits arbitrarily, I'm at wit's end!!!!

    Hey kids!
    The Computer: Toshiba Satellite A355D-S69221
The Program: 32 Bit Windows Vista
The issue: Internal Mic not recognized, external mic quits midway through conversation, Realtek Digital output not plugged in.
So being the smart guy I am, a few weeks back I decided to do the smart thing and delete all the speech recognition software off this thing. I don't need it, so wth.
Now, my internal mic quit. I reinstalled the software, rolled back drivers, deleted drivers to rebuild the driver stack, did a BIOS update, did the GTA ViceCity cheatcode start (unplug everything hold power key 30 seconds, reboot, f2 to enter bios, f9 to update, f10 to save), and nothing.
I did notice that when I had the Realtek Digital Output set as standard, my mic jack was illuminated by a red LED, and the Realtek HD manager wouldn't pop up when I plug something in.
The last irritating part is that I will talk to my wife via vo/ip, the external mic I am using will just quit mid conversation, and I have to reload a driver to get it to work again. I am at my wit's end with this thing, can anyone help? The last thing I am goign to do is another system restore from an earlier date than I used before. Does anyone have any other hints/clues/ideas?

Thanks Jeff. No this isn't some kind of emergency so no one really minds my tinkering until it does get back up.

  • IMac G5 Internal Hard Drive Not Recognized

I shut down my iMac G5 with the power button and not through the typical shutdown procedure once and then when it booted up it would not get past the gray screen. I eventually used the Leopard DVD to try to boot it and was able to get to disk utility to look at the drive. I tried to repair the drive but then the machine froze and I had to restart once more. Now the internal hard drive isn't recognized or seen at all. I actually switched out the SATA hard drive with another spare I had and that was not recognized either. I can get the mac to recognize the installation DVD still so I know my computer still functions properly but I just need it to recognize the drive now. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Have you access to DiskWarrior or TechToolPro? Either of those might fix your problem otherwise, try booting from the Apple Hardware Test on your install disc and see what it says.

  • Cannot install Windows to internal HDD on dm4t laptop (HDD is working, but not recognized in BIOS)

    Hi All,
I have an issue with the internal SATA HDD in my Pavilion dm4t laptop (PR #: XQ1313AAR). The drive is working, when connecting via external USB enclosure is recognized by the PC, can read/write data, format partitions etc… When plugged in as internal HDD of the laptop, BIOS does not recognize it. When booting from Windows Installation Disk, the drive (and its partitions) are recognized, but I get the following message when trying to select a partition to proceed with Windows install:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer’s hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk’s controller is enabled in the computer’s BIOS menu.
Used external USB enclosure again, connected to a working PC and using TestDisk, I deleted the partition table (by zero writing it several times), then created a new MBR. When connecting back as internal drive, it is now recognized by BIOS and in the Windows installation screen, I can actually select a partition on the drive to install Windows on; the installation actually runs, but as soon as I get to the point of having to restart the PC during the installation process, upon restart the drive is not recognized anymore…
When I remove it, and repeat the same steps with TestDisk, it once again works, can start Windows installation, but it fails upon restart.
I have already read numerous forums on the topic, have tried various drive utilities. I also saw in one of the forums a suggestion to enable AHCI for the SATA controller, but the laptop BIOS is extremely limited and does not have that option.
Please help!!! Have been without a working laptop for several weeks and is driving me crazy. Saving any data on the drive is not needed – I have recovered all data from it that I need. So my only objective is to restore the harddrive to fully working state and be able to install OS on it (Windows 7, 64-bit)! Thanks in advance for any help!

    @minxinglee
even i am getting same errors I hope you found out solution by now ! plz... can u share it ! i need it urgently

  • New internal hard drive not recognized at all!

    Hello everybody!
I really need your help. I tried to upgrade my internal 120gb drive to a Western Digital wd2500bevs. But when I start my Macbook with the Leopard DVD neither the System Profiler nor the Disk Utilities Program recognize the drive for a possible installation. When I reinstall the old drive everything is back to normal and works perfectly.
This is what I already tried to fix the problem:
I took the drive into an external casing => it was recognized immediately
I then formatted it => no change after installing it into the Macbook again.
I cloned my system with CCC on the WD and then installed it => no system found.
I have another disk of this kind but the same problem and another 160gb Toshiba disk which is not recognized as well.
Please help me! I couldn't find help in German discussions yet so I hope anyone of you guys can help me.

You say the drive is "recognized" but your original post stated it was not present in Disk Utility. I'm puzzled. Have you attempted to partition and format the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • Batch file gives error "is not recognized as internal command.." after first character

For every batch file I create, I receive the same error displaying after only running the first character in the file: ' d' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable command or batch file.
This occurs whether I run 'dir' cd '../..' or java.exe

  • I downloaded carbon copy. transferred entire internal hd  to new replacement HD  thru USB.  computer booted from replacement hrdrive. then installed replacement hard rive into iMac. when rebooting imac did not recognized new replacement hd.

i downloaded carbon copy. transferred entire internal hd  to new replacement HD  thru USB adapter kit.  computer booted from replacement hrdrive. then i erased the internal hardrive and reloaded the operating system.( i needed to find out if the hard drive was bad or virus/worm was the cause). then installed replacement hard drive into iMac. when rebooting, imac did not recognized new replacement hd. i also upgraded memory at the same time.  ok what did i do wrong. do i have to remove the new replacement hardrive to extract the data.

It should not matter. CCC will "clone" the recovery partition as well, but not knowing exactly what operation you had CCC perform it is difficult to know what may have gone wrong - it has many customizable options and you have to choose the correct one.
I have performed the same transplant as you described and didn't have a problem, but if your Mac is not recognizing the internal HD you really have no choice other than to reinitialize it as suggested. After that, install OS X, upgrade to Mountain Lion if required, and migrate your old account(s) from your backup.
    my backups have backups.
I assume you didn't mean that literally. Have redundant backups - don't "back up your backups".

  • Adobe AIR - java is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file

    Hi,
I've done everything as in the HelloWorld tutorial but when i run this cmd: adt
it gives me the following error java is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file
I've installed the AIR runtime v2
Downloaded the SDK v2 and placed in D:\Www\air
Modified the path variable with D:\Www\air\bin
And then i open a new cmd console and simply write adt and gives me that error.
I've updated to the latest version of Java, but it did solve it.
But what's strage it's that the adl command work, but i'm not being able to pack my application.
    I'm running Windows 7 on x64 platform.
    Sincerely,
    Alex

I think the 32bit version will work, but it sounds like you'll need to add the Java bin folder to your system path.  This is usually done by the Java installer, so I'm not sure what failed, did you run the installer located at www.java.com?  Either way, this document might be able to help you out:
How do I set or change the PATH system variable
Add the Java "bin" folder to your path, you might also need to add the CLASSPATH.
Please let me know how it goes!

Fixed it. I mean I got it to generate the app, I wouldn't call it fixed. This is one of those cases where I'm convinced that I am the only person who is using a particular feature because it doesn't seem like this would have ever worked for anyone.
    Open C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 11\RoboHTML\MultiscreenExt\NativeApps\Android\UpdateApp.bat.

    Back in UpdateApp.bat: I hardcoded SET PATH=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_51\bin;%3;%PATH%.
When I run the script again, I get a different error. I cleared the output window, so I don't remember what it was.
Delete everything in the output folder, run the script again.
I haven't tested the app, but it says and looks like it was generated.
