Internal HD spinning fast

I have a 2008 17" MBP.
I replaced the HD with a WD750 gig. its been fine for years.
now it is spinning real fast, but all functions work, its a little hot, loud, and spinning fast.
I ran disk utility, it said it fixed it.
It fix permissions.
I have a backed up clone of the internal.
what do to.......maybe its just dieing.

our computer geek at my work found out its the fan dieing..........the bearings were making the noise NOT the HD. Powermedic.com had new replacements for $40 ea.

PB17 internal drive spins down during bootup; computer shuts down

my internal hard drive has crashed 3 times in the last week, each time on boot-up during the grey screen spinning wheel mode. the wheel will stop spinning, and simultaneously i can hear the internal drive spin down, then the computer shuts down on its own. i am able to boot from any external bootable hard drive.
when i boot from any external drive, the internal drive does not mount. when launching the utility Drive Genius from the external drive, the internal drive still doesn't mount but does list the drive in the list of volumes/device window and does list the details of the drive. the drive is listed with its BSD name, not its DisplayName.
Drive Genius is able to DUPLICATE the internal drive, and i'm able to boot from that duplication. if i select REPAIR, Drive Genius goes thru it's process of examining but is never able to actually repair the drive. for each time that the drive has crashed, if i select the REBUILD option, even though it always reports back that it was unable to repair the drive, when finished with the report, the drive mounts automatically with the correct volume display name. i am then able to boot from the internal drive, and everything works fine...till the next crash.
Apple's disk utility hasnt been any help, although i've repaired permissions successfully after recovering from each crash.
any thoughts?

If your drive happens to be failing, then there is nothing that any software application can do to fix it. Maybe you should boot from the Install & Restore DVD that came with your PowerBook holding down the Option key, and run Apple Hardware Test to see if that provides any insight....
Have you considered reformatting the PB's drive and reinstalling your system?

2009 Macbook Pro's fan spin faster with power adapter plugged in?

I was playing restaurant city on facebook with macbook pro with the power adapter plugged in
( a flash game)
after a while, the fan starts to spin faster and faster and made noise, and the body of the laptop starts getting hot too.
However, when I play the game without the power adapter, the laptop stays more quiet, and the i can't hear the fan spin anymore...(which sounds good)
but what i am worrying is that, is the hardware SUPPOSED to get hot and the fan is supposed to spin faster? the reason why it is not is because the computer recognize the power adapter is not plugged in, so it forced the fan to stay at a lower rpm to conserve power? (which do harm to my hardware?)

that sounds normal to me - charging the battery produces heat, which must be removed via the fans.
They didn't run slower to conserve power, but because they weren't needed to remove the heat by=product of charging.
Flash is a real cpu burden.

Replaced Internal HD and New HD Fan Spins Fast

Greetings All;
My Dad ordered a iMac with intentions of giving it to my sister for a Christmas present. It came with a stock 500 GB hard drive. The hard drive was quiet. Since then, I replaced the hard drive with a 1.5 TB capacity one. The original hard drive and the new one were manufactured by the same company (Seagate). My problem is that the new hard drive makes the HD fan speed up to about 5000 rpm. I rechecked the temp sensor cable and connectors and all is good. I applied both the SMC and PRAM resets but still the HD fan spins to 5000 rpm. Details of the iMac are below:
iMac version 11,2 Mac OS X version 10.6.5 21.5 inch
Seagate (old) hard drive 500 GB, model ST3500418AS, firmware AP25
Seagate (new) hard drive 1.5 TB, model ST31500341AS, firmware CC1H
Is there a solution to correct the speed of the hard drive fan? According to iStatPro, the new hard drive is the coolest component in the iMac usually running around 25 to 26 C.

Put the original HD back in or go to your Local Apple Service Provider and see if they can hook you up with a Hard Drive that has the correct built-in temperature sensor for that iMac.

Macbookpro Fan suddenly spin fast and loud whereas it's not hot

Hello, i have an issue with my new macbook pro 13 early 2015, i had it for about 1 month now, when i use may mac on easy task (not on high load) my fan suddenly spin so fast and make loud noise whreas my mac isn't on hot condition and i use it on room temperature enviroment, an not so long after that, it comes back to idle... anyone have solution for this?

Advise for adding larger internal hard drive & faster processor

After five years it is time to make some upgrades to my G4 Quicksilver 733 MHz Tower. The hard drive is nearly full and the processor doesn't seem as fast as it once did (especially after using my faster PowerBook G4). I want to replace the 40GB hard drive with a 128GB hard drive. What is the best way to transfer the data and information (applications, etc.). Should I add it as a second hard drive and transfer the data that way then remove the original one? Perhaps I should move all my data from an aux hard drive I have. Should I do a clean install of the operating system and then transfer the rest of the data? If you make a second hard drive I guess you have to identify one as a "master" and the original one as the "slave", or should I do it the opposite way? Any advise would be helpful. Also I want to upgrade to a 1.8 duel processor. One person told me I may be disappointed with the results since the speed of the mother board limits the performance of the processor. Is that true? I have already maxed out the RAM so I should be fine there. Any advise to these issues would be most appreciated.

You could use a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your existing drive:

Alternatively you could just reinstall everything from scratch. I tend to do a reinstall and have a bit of a clean out, only reinstalling those apps etc I still actually use.
I'd have both drives installed internally to do the cloning or transferring of data across after a reinstall. You could then remove the original drive or just leave it for use as a backup disk or temporary storage area etc. With two drives installed, one will need to be set to master and one to slave. With one drive installed, it will need to be set to master. I don't think it really matters which way around you do it.
In terms of processor upgrades, the 133MHz system bus/memory will become a bottleneck at some point, but it partly depends on which applications you're using at the time and whether they're processor bound or bandwidth starved. IMHO there's a sweet spot where you get the most bang for the buck. A higher clocked processor would probably still be faster in real world terms, but I suspect you get diminishing returns for the extra cost involved.
When I upgraded my Quicksilver, I intended to get a single 7455 based processor upgrade from OWC. They're resonably priced and tend to be faster in real world usage than a 7447 based processor upgrade running at the same clock speed due to the extra level 3 cache (which partly helps to offset the limited bus speed). In the end though I managed to get a dual 1GHz processor card pulled from another Quicksilver in OWC's clearance section. The advantages were it's an original Apple part which didn't require any firmware updates, software patches or additional fans etc. The disadvantages were it's a four year old part with a limited warranty and the heat sink had to be reattached using thermal paste etc.

Once in a while motor spins fast unable to find index

The problem with my motion controller is that sometimes can not find home/index My theory is that if home count is only one count behind the current count motor goes forward and winds up very fast for about 360 degrees and after that motor drive gets disabled. Can I enabled it to look for home/index forward and backwards?This has happened three times for the last two weeks and it is hard to debug and troublesome to get system back in operation. I'm new to this program and every suggestion is appreciated.

I am using NI 7344 board with Flex Motion 4.5 software and the problem is still here, only now is more often. I put hardware limit switch to disable the motor after it runs out of position but I still didn't figure out the root cause of this.
I have absolute encoder giving me home position and incremental encoder to do the motion, and I can not find out which one is causing motor to continue past programmed travel.
Software limit switches so far did not give me any results.
How can I get Error Monitor.flx to work?

Fan spinning fast with noise

Hi!
I have HP Pavillion dv5 notebook. i have a problem with the ventilation fan. sometimes when i move my laptop (for exemple if i tlift it from the table to put it somewhere else) then the fan starts to spinn with an extremly high speed and it sounds very noisy, this condition doesn't stop until i turn off the computer. This happens too sometimes when i start my computer, i had to start again, to make it sound normally.
I don't know what is the cause of this?
What should i do to fix it?

Which is faster for music production? internal hard drive or external drive

hey there. simple question. i'm looking to run music poductin software on an apple mac - would sound files be retrieved faster from a new mac book pro internal hard drive or an external drive? (am thinking one of those lacie orange rugged things that spin at 7200 rpm)
and if the sound files would play better coming form the internal hard drive, would it compromise processor speed for running soft synths / effects units etc etc?
please note am not talking about my current mac book, but a new mac book pro

For what it is worth here is my tuppence worth on the subject, horton. (and a warm welcome to the forums , by the way!)
One of the major reasons why many sound professionals (and others worried about speed) use fast external FW800 or (when possible) eSata drives for their work, rather than the internal drive of an MBP or the like, is that the internal boot drive is already carrying the OS and a bunch of apps on its fast, outer sectors. It is usually doing a fair bit of work keeping things running, too. An external FW 800 drive can be kept unencumbered of such things.
On top of this the 2.5" drives in notebooks are slower at the best of times than 3.5" drives. If you want real speed, my suggestion would be that you keep the internal drive for your OS and Apps as much as possible, and get a fast 7200 rpm 3.5" FW800 external with its own power supply for your sound files (assuming you will have access to mains power).
If you use the internal for this sort of purpose too, you are going to find that the internal fills up fast, that it soon develops free space fragmentation issues, and that it gradually slows to the speed of mollasses!

New MacBook Pro 13" Fans spinning loud and fast all the time?

I was curious if anyone else that just ordered the brand new 13" MacBook Pro which I got one and a half days ago has their internal fans spinning constantly? MIne are going really fast now for over an hour and all I have open is Safari, iChat and Skype. I'm curious if this is similar to the update Apple released for my early 2008 model 15" MacBook Pro a couple weeks ago for the fans due to them spinning at a high speed. Does anyone else have a similar problem?

I just did some more searching on Google and found this article to be helpful and the fans seem to have slowed down to normal operation and the Finder is only using 7% CPU now.

I only relaunched Finder and it seems to be running the fans a lot slower not sure if I will have to follow the rest of those steps if relaunching Finder doesn't fix it permanently. Let me know what everyone else thinks.

Hard drive spins very fast during youtube viewing

My hard drive spins fast every time I watch youtube or any other video streaming sites. Is it normal? or bad. You will know that the HD spins if the fan is on right?

Hi dattebayo: If the fan is spinning up while viewing videos or other CPU intensive activities, that is what it is meant to do. Hard drive constantly spinning up and down when asleep

Hi all,
I have a problem with an external USB 2.0 hard drive connected to my Mac mini (late 2012).
When I put the computer to sleep the drive spins up to speed, stops, then immediately starts to spin up again. This goes on and on.
I understand that drives will periodically spin up when asleep for spotlight indexing etc. However this seems like strange behaviour, it just repeats spinning up and down in an endless cycle.
I have had the drive for a while now, as my time machine backup. Interestingly this problem only started after I rearranged my desk when I set up a second monitor. I have a USB 3.0 drive (my scratch disk) that behaves normally.
I have drives set to not sleep in preferences.
I have searched around but can only find posts about people not wanting to wait for drives to spin up when they open finder etc.
What do you think? Could the drive be on its way out? It is a Samsung spinpoint f3 1tb in an Iomega enclosure, for information...

I should have noticed this earlier but it appears the problem is with the mini waking from sleep and thus causing the drives to wake.
When I put the mini top sleep (without the external drives powered on) it constantly wakes and sleeps. The displays dont come back on (untiul you click the mouse or hit a key etc.) but you can hear the internal drive spin up and the sleep light comes on, then goes back to blinking until it wakes again.
I have realised that it must be due to the second monitor that I have connected via the mini display port. It is connected using a mini display port to hdmi cable I bought from play.com. Something to do with the display and thunderbolt is casuing the sleep function to misbehave, I think.
Here is the console log that was created after sleeping the mini, allowing it to go through its weird sleep/wake cycle then fully waking it up again.

Deploying internal and external wireless users

what i have npw AP1232AG, WLSM and SUP720. i,ve implemented wlan for our internal users, via fast secure roaming. Now i want to setup the connection for external users. i have a seperate internet connection for external users
. what is the best method to deploy wireless for external users?

Best from the perspective of antennas and radiation patterns, or best from the perspective of integrating the indoor / outdoor systems?
Or "external" meaning guests?

Spinning noise on startup with my MacBook Pro.

I've had my MacBook Pro for about a year and a half now and it recently started making a noise when it starts up, from sleep mode or power off mode, that sounds like something's spinning faster and faster; like a car switching gears if you keep your foot on the gas. After about ten seconds it goes back to normal and you can't hear a thing. It's embarrassing when I open it during a lecture, or in the library, and people around me look at me because it is the only thing you can hear. I'm just afraid because last time my hard drive crashed. I just want to know if it's a hardware problem because it's deifinitely not normal since everyone around me has Macs and none of them make this sound.

That usually means a RAM issue. Take out the RAM modules and make certain that the connections are clean and reinstall them, making certain that they are well seated.
Have you recently installed new RAM? If so it may be faulty.
If no change you may run an Apple Hardware Test:

Google Earth 7.1 - planet is spinning like crazy

Hi,
today when I opened Google Earth, the window came up, the overlays loaded and then the planet startet to spin like crazy. Everything I tried did not stop the spinning. It spins fast and constantly moves from north to west and back to north. It is unusable and I have no clue, where that is coming from. I googled the problem and could not really find any usable info, that's why I am posting it here now.
I have rebootet my machine, deleted the app and redownloaded it from Google to no avail. Still doing the same crazy thing. I just used it last week a few times and all was fine. I have not done any hardware changes or hook ups to my iMac since then. For all the years I use Google Earth, I have never had anything like that.
Any help would be appreciated.

Check your USB devices.
I had the same problem and went through the whole delete and reinstall the application rigmarole, including preferences and everything that I could find, even in the hidden /User/Libray folder, and nothing worked until I Googled the problem and found the answer: that by unplugging my (rarely used) USB steering wheel, quitting Google Earth (easier said than done as it was very sluggish in responding) then restarting Google Earth, the application now works perfectly.
Relief!
So it seems that, in my case, a USB device was sending the earth into a spin.
