  • Setting up Snow Leopard Server with Address Book, iCal for Small Business

    Hello Folks,
I have a small business with 2-3 people and I want to setup Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini. I have everything in place, RAID, Backup drive etc.
What I need is a guide on how to setup the server correctly and how to setup Address Book Server, iCal Server, DNS, etc. I was in IT a long while back but have gone back to my creative roots and sworn off IT but I am in a situation where my IT guy's wife is pregnant so he is busy painting the baby's room, etc.
I was looking at Snow Leopard Server for Dummies and a few other books. Do you guys have any suggestions on resources for me to read or research that would give me very straightforward steps in getting this setup. I am at a point where I can re-install from scratch if needed.
For the ease of those that might respond let's assume I know my way around Mac and general networking as a whole.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Hi Guys,
First of, I will give you a brief background on me regarding networking as a mac user since 1994. I can setup and network multiple macs without a server in our home and small office. Turning file, print and internet sharing with a regular Mac OS X client version at no problem at all. This would be my first time setting up a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.
I'm in the same boat as Jakekub but we do not have a static IP from our DSL provider. We just bought a Mac Mini Server for our small office with 3 iMacs and 1 MacBook. We will just use the server for internal usage and to centralized things out and use some of server's features like Address Book, Mail, iCal etc. I've search the forums and found Orhidy's post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2148553
I even followed the sample IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server and I think I had it correctly setup initially. And I think I got it all running on the basic setup base on his instructions. So I tried to test my DNS settings via Terminal > hostname then got answer as
    servername.companyname.private
And double checking DNS again with a command: sudo changeip - checkhostname and was given an answer of:
    Primary address = 192.168.1.192
    Current Hostname = servername.companyname.private
    DNS Hostname = servername.companyname.private
The names match. There is nothing to change
    dirserv:success = "success"
But here's another one that bugs me. I tried to follow from "Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Dummies" the command line:
    NSLOOKUP hostname
    and got an answer of:
;; Got SERVFAIL reply from 192.168.1.192, trying next server
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
** server can't find hostname: NXDOMAIN
So does it mean that I still haven't configured my server properly?
Thank you all for the help in advance!

  • IP PBX for small business

    Hi guys,
I plan to install a new in-house PBX, but I'm not secure in my knowledge, so I need some confirmation. I've done some research and I feel an IP PBX would be my primary choice.
I run a small trade company that needs 12 telephones (including hardphones and mobile devices as well). We use them for both of internal and external communication.
In addtition to the basic PBX features (as well as call routing, conference calling, voicemail, call queuing, etc.) I have some special requirements related to the new phone system:
     - I have only one office, but my employees (especially the sales representatives) are often out-of the office. That's why mobile phones are essentially needed for us. So I'd like to attach mobile devices to our PBX as well.
     - Concerning that my target audience consists of mainly young people (they are mostly 26-35 years old), I'd like to facilitate them to contact us by using any innovative, free, Internet-based communication method. So a chat console and/or a click-to-call
    webphone would be also appreciated.
After checking the possible solutions at Alternativeto.net, I've tried some trial versions and finally it seems that Ozeki Phone systems suits best for my needs.
Can anybody tell me if this is a good option for my requirements? Is there any other option I should look at? Because I'm always searching for the best, I tend to be a little (that is very) insecure, so I'd like to hear other people's opinion about the issue.
A little review of it will be a great help for me! (Is it stable, trustworthy, etc...?)
I’m looking forward to your opinion here or even in e-mail ([email protected])! Thanks a lot in advance!
    Regards,
    Justin

    Hi Justin,
This is the Lync forum and I think your question is generic in that you are wanting to know what sort of phone system would suit a small business with 12 or so users.
I mean you could certainly look at Lync and you would get all the features that you outline, however this may be impeded by the cost of Lync and associated hardware. (something you'd need to look into as I am not sure what the cost of the other systems you've
    looked at is)
Depending on your time constraints, cloud PSTN access for Lync Online / Office 365 is on the roadmap for the near future and this would certainly be a viable option for your customer.

  • Need software to keep track of clients for small business.

We need some way to keep up with multiple types of payments for several hundred clients, as well as the ability to make notes as needed.  We have been using ical for our notes and a simple Numbers spreadsheet, but this method is cumbersome.  I have looked at various accounting programs, but they all seem much more complicated than I need.  Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I ran a small business, and there is no way I would have done it with iCal and Numbers.  Intuit's Quickbooks is the best program for small business.  Yes, it's probably got more than you need, but it helps pay bills, taxes, inventory, blah blah blah.  It's only $200.  They have an online version.  It links to your bank.  It links to tax software.  I can go on.  I used the enterprise version, and I'm not an accounting, and I found it a piece of cake to learn.
Since this is the forum for the Macbook Pro, you're really not going to find much info here.  Go to the Intuit Quickbooks website, and do a test run.  Trust me, if  you want to make a profit and pay bills on time, get a real program.  Quickbooks is one of the cheapest but still the best out there.

  • Error when installing Lenovo solutions for small business [Screenie included]

    Hello everyone.
Recently, I tried opening the pre-installed Lenovo solutions for Small Business software on my Lenovo e530 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit version (Upgraded from Win 7 Home Prem 64-bit) but failed after getting a message for encountering a critical problem of some sort. I then tried restarting my computer and that did not solve the problem. And then, I decided to install an upgrade version of it from this website http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS030146. But before that I uninstalled the previous version by uninstalling Intel Small Business advantage customizations with Revo Uninstaller and I deleted all the related folders too with a thorough scan. Out of my expection, I got this message below saying that I could not proceed due to some unspecified error. Has anyone encountered the same problem before? Does anyone have a solution for this? I'm not sure if that's my computer's problem or from the driver itself. Thank you for your attention to this issue.

    Hi, dougy
This should be configurable under msconfig. This is a program that you can use to tell your computer which programs you want to start when Windows starts. To get to this program, type msconfig into the search bar in the Start menu. A window should appear. Check under the Startup tab and make sure that the Lenovo Solutions for Small Business program does not have a checkmark next to it. This should prevent this program from starting up when your computer turns on.
    Hope it helps,
    Adam

  • What does "Personal Use Only" for small business owners mean?

For small businesses or Sole-Proprietors, computers they use for business are also the machines being used for personal use. If I understand the new Mac App Store license correctly, you cannot ethically purchase an app on the App Store that will be used for business use. If that is the case, the greatest oxymoron is that they have a "Business" section in the App Store.
I truly LOVE how easy the App Store makes managing one's apps, but if I have to now deal with seperating all purchases based on it's overall use, they have just complicated the small business scene for small business owners.
I fully understand them wanting to discourage a large business from purchasing, for example, Aperture, once and installing it on 100+ machines. But if that is what they're trying to avoid, why not be more specific in the terms of the updated App Store license info. Instead, they are shooting down any and all use of anything purchased in the App Store for business.
Any other small business owners facing the same situation?

Here is a clause from the Terms and Conditions, which can be found at http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html#APPS
    *Begin quote*
(ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, you may download a Mac App Store Product for use either (a) by a single individual on each of the Mac Product(s) that you own or control, or (b) by multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Product that you own or control. For example, a single employee may use a Mac App Store Product on both the employee’s desktop Mac Product and laptop Mac Product, or multiple students may serially use the Product on a single Mac Product located at a resource center or library.
    *End quote*
It seems that as long as you abide by these guidelines, you can use App Store apps for business.

  • Router for small business Internet connection

One of our clients recently switched ISPs to Speakeasy who installed a Hatteras HN 407 bridge. We have had Internet connectivity problems using their SonicWall 3060 firewall, and we experienced similar problems when attempting to use a newer Sonicwall TZ180. We temporarily installed a Linksys W54GT router, which has been working perfectly; however, we would like to have a more robust router for their 25 user network - additional security options, performance, VPN, two WAN connections, etc. Can you recommend a small business router with 2 WAN connections? This customer has a business ethernet 3Mbps (up and down) Internet connection, uses an online medical scheduling program, normally has 10 - 20 uses using the Internet connection and will be installing a backup DSL line that we would like to use for load balancing.

Our recommendation for Dual WAN would be RV082 This would be the prefect VPN router for small  Business and if you are looking for more ports on  the Ethernet, then we would recommend the RV016

  • Twist/S230u bug: cannot start Lenovo Solutions for Small Business after installing updates

An issue may happen after running ThinkVantage System Update and selecting all available updates.  After rebooting, Lenovo Solutions for Small Business will fail to launch.  This issue happens because of a failure during one of the updates.
To fix the issue, download and install the Intel MEI driver.  Although this software is already installed on your system, it is in a broken state.  Installing it again will fix it, and let Lenovo Solutions for Small Business run successfully.

  • How can I creat a security system for a truck, with Wifi camera playing on iPad/iPhone without 3G/LTE ?

    Hello,
I want to create a wifi security system for a truck with cameras, but all the ones I found are IP. So I don't know if it's possible to use it only on wifi (not on 3G/LTE).
If you have an idea, it will be nice...
    Thank you

that range of most wifi setup unless you want to pay alot!
would likely mean you could see about as much as the camera from where you were standing
a mifi or otherwise something which bridge a lan to the internet would work
make sure the camera have a webserver in it and then you can see it from any web browser where you put in the login and password

The "internal operating systems" for a Centro is stored in ROM on the device.  To reload it cleanly, simply do a Hard Reset:
