Internal microphone almost inaudible

This has been going on for about two months now. I used to be able to make videos on photobooth, use skype, use adobe flash-based online chat programs and the audio worked fine, clear voice etc. But now, when i use ANY of these programs, my voice is nearly inaudible. Some people on the other end say they can hear me typing (quietly).
Here are some screen grabs of my current settings.
I'm working on a MB Pro 10.6.7.

Boot up from your system install disc. The one that came with your computer and run the Hardware Test.
Set up a new account. If you mic does not work there, your issue could be hardware rather than software.
There is a microphone expert over in the iSight forum area. Try posting there. This person also has a troubleshooting manual - EZJim's Website which you should read for a possible solution.

Yes, it has an internal microphone. You can download the full maintenance and service guide from HP (http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04495010.pdf) and find the info in there.
It actually picks up very well also - almost too well considering many times you're holding the device in your hand. The slightest movement actually picks up the rubbing sounds from your hand or your finger sliding across the screen if your using the screen while the mic is active.
As far as finding the mic on the device, the best I can figure is that it's at the edge of the bezel on the top between the audio jack and the front-facing camera. Mine has a tiny 'notch' in the bezel right there, and that would also pretty much be where you would expect it to be from looking at the internal diagrams.

Internal Microphone - not responsive, how can I fix?

Rather than spend a large sum of time at my local Apple Store (especially carrying a fifteen+ pound computer through the mall) I decided to see what I could come up with at home.
I have the Late-2006 iMac Intel Processor, and I've of course been using it for almost two years. When I got it, the microphone was working stellar, and I was able to easily video chat/conference, no hassle at all. But for a while now (and how long I have been able to cope with this is beyond me) I have found that the microphone has not been picking up much.
I did some tests, nothing really insane, just got a ruler out and tested how well it picked up noise. It easily picked up tapping when I tapped the exterior of the computer next to the mic. From about six inches away, it could pick up some loud snapping - but it could really only process one or two snaps out of four or five (with a "level" of 7/15 bars of response in the input set up window - for this,and the remainder of these tests, the audio sensitivity was set at its highest setting). From twelve inches away, it could pick up the same amount, just at a lesser volume (5/15 bars)
Then I did a bit of a speaking test. I sat in front of my computer at a normal distance (18 inches) and tried talking. Nothing picked up. I tried at 12 inches, nothing. Six inches, nothing. Less than an inch away, and with a deepened voice, it got about 3/15 bars of response.
I tried cleaning it with some compressed gas dusting solution from office max (the kind in the aluminum can that can dust keyboards,etc.) and that picked up around 13-14/15 bars - yet no improvement in the responsiveness of my internal microphone.
Please, if you know what's up, give me the heads up, so I can schedule an appointment at my Apple Store - and skip some time by giving the guy this information!

Try this. Download onyX (free - just Google it). It's some kind of clean-up software. Click "automation" and tick all the boxes. Then "Execute". Wait some time (20 mins?) until it's all done. Restart. Your mic may well be operating now - it worked for mine!

HP G60-554 Microphone Problem - Inaudible sound w/ incredible static

I pre-ordered this computer before it was released on Thursday of last week. I noticed on Saturday that the microphone was completely inaudible due to a massive amount of static that drowns out the voice. I called HP and we discussed the issue over the phone and after letting the representative hear the recorded sound, he suggested that I return the laptop to Futureshop and get a replacement.
I picked up my replacement today, and to my horror, the microphone issue still exists. The sound driver has been uninstalled and re-installed, it has been updated, and the microphone boost has been tried at all levels.
I'm desperate for some help.

Try these steps:
Click Start , Control Panel , Hardware and Sound , Sound , and then select the Recording tab .
Right-click on appropriate internal microphone audio device and select Properties .
Select the Listen tab and then deselect Listen to this device .

Satellite U400 - Internal microphone is too quiet

I am running on Windows7 x64. I have downloaded latest sound drivers (4.98.6.61) and now is internal microphone very quiet although its volume is on max.
I had Vista x64 before and everything was ok. I have tried Vista drivers on Windows 7, but nothing changed - still quiet mic.

I had the same issue with my Satellite U400 but on Vista. After updating the sound driver and BIOS the issue did still exist.
After searching a little bit here in the forum I activated the microphone boost and this was the solution! :)
1.Open the "Control Panel" (Standard view)
2.Click on "Hardware and Sound"
3.Click on "Sound"
4.Click on the "Recording" tab.
5.Mark the Microphone and then press on the "Properties" button.
6.Click on the Custom tab and set the check by Microphone Boost

I have an L500 -1PU Toshiba, running on 32 bit Windows 7,
The webcam is working wonderfully but the internal microphone is not working properly.
I had an external microphone so i hadn't noticed this problem when i got on skype, but i've recently discovered that when using the webcam the person on the other end can hear faint noises from my computer when i'm playing music or watching a video clip.
How can i solve this and get my microphone working properly such that i can control the volume and actually get full service from my otherwise decent notebook?

Its a matter of the settings.
This issue occurs if the microphone volume in the speakers properties is enabled.
After disabling this point the issue with acoustic feedback does not appear anymore.

MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011 - Internal Microphone Not Working

Hey everyone, I've been having trouble with my internal microphone on my 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro every so often. In the Sound preferences, Internal Microphone (Built-in) has been selected on the Input tab, the input volume is on full and the audio port has been set to Sound Output so the internal mic is the only input source. However, there is no signal detected by the input level bar. There's also no input on Skype, which is the main thing I use the internal mic for. I do have an external microphone by means of a headset, although I have to set up a small mixer to have a headphone and microphone input and this takes some time, which I do use but sometimes, for convenience, I'd rather just be able to use the internal mic and use some headphones in the built-in output.
I can't figure out why it doesn't seem to activate, usually a restart activates the mic but I haven't had much success doing this today, and really, the mic shouldn't be doing it in the first place.
If anyone can shed some light onto this, please do!

You may try a PRAM reset. If that does not resolve the issue, make an appointment at the Apple store Genius bar.

High pitched sound - something to do with internal microphone ??

Suddenly my Powerbook has started emitting a high pitched sound through its speakers. You know one of those high frequency ear-blowing sounds when a PA system is being set up and the mic is getting tested and the amp's turned up too loud?
I'm not sure exactly what I was doing when it started, but I think I was making or receiving a telephony call via iChat. During or just after the connection process (which didn't work for some reason but that could've been a problem at the other end), this high pitched squeal started. I can get rid of it by turning down the output volume - the squeal disappears but that of course turns all other output sound down as well. The sound disappears when the volume is turned down about half way.
But...even if the sound is turned down half way, if I put my hand over the left speaker, the sound comes back. No sound comes back if I place hand over right speaker. I assume then that the inbuilt microphone is under the left speaker area, and this has something to do with the inbuilt mic.
The only other thing that's happened in recent times is that I used this Powerbook's audio line-in port to record some sound from an audio casette recently. I used Audio Recorder 2.0 for this. I can't imagine this has been the cause, but thought I'd better mention it. If I go into the Sound Preference panel, I can stop the squeal by changing the sound input device from internal microphone to Line In.
Anyone have a clue as to why this is happening and how iit can be fixed?

Hey, great suggestion Burn. It prompted me to look at iChat preferences, since that was the only application that I've had open which might engage the internal microphone.
Within iChat Preferences, I clicked on the 'Video' icon, and for the 'Microphone' setting I saw that 'None selected' (or something like that - that option has gone now?) was in place. So I changed the setting to Internal Microphone. The whistle or screech was still there. Then I changed the setting to 'Line In'. No more screech!!
A good result, but is this the way it's supposed to be? Does having the setting as 'Line In' mean that I have to plug headphones in whenever I want to use iChat for internet telephony? Unless I manually change to Internal Microphone, but then I suffer screeching again?

No sound recorded on the internal microphone after SoundMAX driver update (Windows XP)

My internal microphone is not picking up sound after I upgraded my SoundMAX driver (available from the Lenovo website here) to version 5.10.1.571.* It looks like this was a problem before and was supposedly fixed in 5.10.1.5520 which is included in the version I have.
I have tested the audio through the Control Panel utility, i.e., Sounds and Audio Devices Properties - Voice - Test hardware. No dice: my voice could not be detected. I also tested via the Windows XP sound recorder utility, i.e., Accessories - Entertainment - Sound Recorder. Same result: silence.
In the Control Panel's Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, I have verified that the Default device for Audio and Voice (playback and recording) all are set to "SoundMAX HD Audio." The SoundMAX software that ships with this laptop (also called "control panel") is very scaled back. There doesn't appear to be anything interesting there to adjust.

Internal microphone still not working - Pavilion Notebook dm4

My internal microphone is not working. ( IDT high definition CODEC)
I think I have tried everything!
Driver updated
Device is shown as working ( green bars moving etc)
I have uninstalled and re-installed driver
In the past it OCCASIONALLY worked
Now it is not working at all.
Can ayone suggest anything else?

A new Mac is in warranty for 1 year from the date of purchase.
If there is any manufacturing defect found, it will be repaired free of charge.

My new iMac's internal microphone is not being recognized by other applications (such as Skype or rosetta stone)?

I just bought a new iMac. I'm having trouble with the internal microphone. I went to systems preferences> sound, and checked the input levels. The computer shows recieved sound from internal microphone and a USB connected microphone. However, no one on Skype can hear me, and microphone isn't recognized while using rosetta stone. Does anyone know what could be the problem with my internal mic?

I did get an answer to my problem. It was specifically with skype and Rossetta Stone. I had to re-install the apps and then do the general upgrade. It fixed the problem. Works fine now.

WNo Sound from Internal Microphone - Windows 8.1 Lync App on Lenovo Yoga 13

After upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 the microphone input in Lync ceased to work.
Lync correctly shows that I have both a webcam and microphone in my laptop, and both are turned on under Permissions.
I have updated all my drivers to latest available on Lenovo's website.
When I examine the microphone driver in the Device Manager, it shows that audio is being picked up and can properly route audio through to the laptops internal speakers.
The only app that appears to have a problem with the internal microphone is Lync. For example, the YouCam application properly captures both audio and video.
Any suggestions?

Are you able to make call using this Internal Microphone? I would like to confirm if the call can be established and there is no sound from Microphone.
Please check the Audio and Video Device in Lync client option. Please also select "Before I join meetings, ask me which audio device I want to use" in Phones option so that you can choose the correct audio device for call.

My internal microphone no longer works after loading Skype to my MacBook Pro... What to do now???

I use my internal microphone on my MacBook Pro very often, especially in programs like GarageBand, Audacity and Photo Booth. However, yesterday after attempting to use Skype (for the very first time) my internal microphone does not work properly in any program. The only time it responds is when I tap the area directly above the microphone.
- I've already checked the settings in System Preferences
- I deleted all files associated with Skype
- I've tried holding the "option + command + r + p" while starting the computer
- I've delete the "com.apple.soundpref.plist" file in the user library
Has anyone else encountered this problem and knows of a definite fix, or can someone at least offer any other suggestions that may work?

Sounds like a hardware problem. Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. If you have Apple Care or your computer is still under warranty, call them up and let them deal with it.

Microphone works fine with Quictime on another mac, so I do know how to use it. The one where it is not working (A) had an external microphone and camera attached earlier, and indeed it does work with that external microphone, but not with the internal microphone selected; and (B) had RealPlayer installed previously.

Download Audio driver from here.
Intructions how to install it in Vista/Win7.
Extract this driver with Winrar.
Open Device manager and expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
Right click on Either the High Definition Audio Device if you have the generic Microsoft drivers, or the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 if you have older Conexant drivers and choose "Update Driver Software..."
Click Browse my computer for driver software, then click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Click "Have Disk..." then Browse to the folder where the drivers were extracted .......\V64 for 64-bit Vista/Win7. Click OK.
Select one of the "Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221" models in the list, there will be multiple identical entries.
Click Next, and you're done.
I'm not sure which one from the list will work for You.
This drivers weren't test. So if You will try them and it will work for You let us now about.
