Internal microphone keeps on changing to external microphone when headset with mic is plugged in

Hey I want to use the built-in microphone on my macbook pro but whenever I plug in a headset with a microphone it changes the internal microphone into external in System Preferences>Sound>Input.
There is no option available to change it back to the built in microphone in the settings above.
I don't mind if I have to use a software as a workaround.
I have a Macbook Pro 13-inch (mid-2012).

If you can get an adapter that "hides" the mic band on the plug, no switching will occur.
But that will probably imply a trip to the tech shop anyway.
It might be simpler just to use regular headphones or generic ear buds.
I don't know where you live but around here just about every drugstore, convenience store, & even most grocery stores sell inexpensive ear buds & headphones.

  • Photo "...changed in external application" when saving metadata in LR2

I am getting occasional error dialogs saying that one or more photos have been changed in an external application when saving metadata. I'm quite certain the photos have not been touched since the catalog was built--two days ago.
I built an entirely new catalog after installing LR2. I changed some keywords as I not all images were keyworded in the same way. When I save metadata, either for an entire folder or for all files, I get occasional error dialogs about the image being changed externally. I'm quite certain that I changed nothing.
Running Win XP Pro SP2 + all updates except SP3, LR2, on Xeon 3070 with 3GGB RAM and lots of hard drive space.

If I didn't think my humor and irony would be misinterpreted as being rude, I might say "Why are you such a troublemaker, by asking this question? Don't you know from reading the forum, that there are multiple opinions about how LR works with changes done outside itself?" Ooops, I actually said it.<G>
But, seriously, I've had many of the same questions, so I've been following the various threads, and still haven't got a clear and relatively simple answer to "how to work with LR images and catalogs using outside applications, and not mess stuff up?"
So, again, seriously, thanks for asking. Hoping, like you, to get clearer understanding.

I was having an issue where each time I would modify a photo, LR would change the Capture Date to the Modified Date. Upon a quick search, I believe the correct way to stop this from happening is for me to uncheck the auto write to XMP which I did. After correcting the myriad of inadvertent date changes, I selected all the photos I was working with and attempted to save the metadata only to get this warning/question: "One or more of these photos has been changed in an external application. Should Lightroom overwrite the settings on disk?" I searched this and I'm confused because I'm not editing the photos in an external application; the only external app that is even remotely touching these photos is Dropbox, which is where my LR catalog is stored. Does Dropbox have something to do with this message or am I missing something? To overwrite or not to overwrite is the question now, I guess, but I'd like to figure out why this question is being posed so I can fix it from the start.

  • Select/transform tool changes to pan tool when working with text

I have had this problem since Motion 2, and version 3 is no different. Whenever I work with text in Motion, at some point while moving the text in the canvas, the select/transform tool will suddenly change into the Pan tool, and it won't let me do anything else but pan things. I have to close and reopen Motion to correct this. It happens VERY OFTEN, every time I work with text...it get's really annoying haveing to conatantly quit and reopen the program. I lose a lot of time doing that. Has anyone else had this problem? I also have a Powermac G5 that has the same problem so I know it's not the Mac Pro. Any suggestions?

    Sounds familiar.
I searched and saw a couple posts from Patrick that suggested,
"This seems to happen after adjusting text. Simply click on the canvas and press space. The project won't play and the hand will turn into your selected tool."

  • External Microphone Input?

The iPhone headset's (or similar one plug headset) microphone and headphone can be used by plugging the headset into the headphone jack. In Mac OS X, the internal microphone option changes to external microphone.
Boot Camp doesn't seem to recognize this. All I get is the internal microphone, the line-in jack, and the digital input (SPDIF).
Is there a way or a driver to enable the use of the microphone input for the headphone jack?
    Thanks!

first of all, i don't work for lenovo.
i'll try to find a specific answer for you. ( i will post here if i can find )

  • External Microphone Use

I'd like to use an external mic to add narrative to iMovie projects; however, have not been able to get acceptable levels of audio. I've increased the input level in System Preferences but the audio level is just too low. Tried using Apple support. The technician (when I could understand what he was saying) tried to help me but was unsuccessful -- finally referred me to an authorized Apple retailer in my area. They researched the issue and could find no mics specifically for the Mac. I've tried using mics that I know work with PCs and tried using a camcorder headset with mic and earphone. No luck. Anyone had experience with using external mics? Thanks.

Hi there! Mics that connect to audio in on the Mac typically do not have enough power. I've forgotten exactly, but the audio in on the Mac is either line level or not line level (I can't remember). At any rate, the audio in on the Mac needs a stronger signal than is provided with an ordinary mic. You can solve this with a device such as the Griffin iMic (search for this), or you can simply use a USB mic (there are many out there) which will bypass the problem and work fine. I have a Logitech USB mic that works fine but I don't use it very much.
    Post back with further questions.

  • Internal and external microphone doesnot working on HP probook 6550b

    HP probook 6550b.  Windows 7 Pro SP1 64bit.
Sound works without any problems but my microphone suddenly stops working today.
Usually i use my internal microphone.
I tried to plug in one of my external microphones to mic jack and it also doesnot working. I check my 2 external microphones on other PC and they both are woking properly.
    1) Nothing new was installed today.
    2) To fix this i tried to swich in sound properties default device but i dont see any green volume level behind mic images for both.
    3) I removed all audio drivers
    4) After PC was restarted windows installed default drivers but i still cannot record any sound. (Checked in skype and by green record level indicator in sound properties)
    5) Also for default windows drivers i tried to switch my default microphone in 'sound' window settings and also plug in and out my external mics and without results.
Screen shot of windows after default windows drivers was installed:
    What it can be?
    Thanks.

First question, i would answer yes :
About this mac >Materiel > Audio (intégré) > audio haute définition Intel > microphone interne > connexion interne
    Second question :
in system preference > microphone interne  is black and not grey.
bars "sound test" near menu "entry level" does not move at all even if I shout...
    Third question :
The power supply has been totaly replaced by a new one.
    4rth :
Yes, no problem with speakers integrated or with the one of the headset...
On skype : i Hear but can not speak.
(i tested the headset on a PC, it works)

  • External Microphone won't work!

I had recently JUST bought a headset.
I was excited to use it... I was positive that it was Mac compatible cause it said that it was ipod compatible.. my mistake I guess. Plus I needed to buy a mic under $30 cause that's all I had... and the cheapest one they had was the one I have on now.
Sooo I get it all ready.
There are 2 plug ins. One for the audio head phones... then one for the mic.
Oddly there is NO hole for a mic.. since mac already has a built in mic.. but i hate using that.
Sooo I just plug it into the next available hole.. which looks like this "|>o<|"
    The mic doesn't work....
So I go to System Prefrences on my computer and it says:
    +Changing your computer's sound input device+
+You can input sound into your computer using your computer's internal microphone or an external microphone. For example, you may want to use an external microphone to record your voice, or use the internal microphone to give spoken commands to your computer.+
+Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sound.+
+Click Input, and then select the device you want to use for sound coming into your computer.+
    So I do that..
    Here were the choices:
    Internal Microphone- Built In
    Line In- Audio line-in port
    so I click "Line In"
and my mic still doesn't work.
does this mean I have to get a new headset?
The thing is I called the place and it said that this headset IS mac compatible. Soo I dunno what's going on.
My guess that this isn't mac compatible even though the guy said it was...
    Also,
Any good headsets I can get for the mac UNDER $30?

Hanners, Welcome to the discussion area!
This discussion area is for the G3 iMacs which look like this:
It sounds like you do not have a G3 iMac. It sounds like you have a G4 iMac which looks like this:
The iMac you have does NOT have an audio input port. The plug you have attached the microphone to is the output port for the Apple Pro speakers. By doing that you may have damaged your microphone AND the output port for the Apple Pro speakers.
The only way to use a microphone with your iMac is to either get a USB microphone OR use an iMic along with a standard microphone.

    Hey coolasc,
If you had a lot of updates come through, you'll want to make sure that BIOS was one of them.
BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System/Service. It is the language that all of the hardware components in your computer use to communicate with each other. There are updates which come out periodically for it so it would be best to have the latest version. The following steps were taken from here.
Windows 8: From the Start screen, type "msinfo32". Click msinfo32 from the list of results.
Windows 7&Vista: Click the Start button, type "msinfo32". Click msinfo32.exe from the list of results.
About halfway down on the right, look for BIOS Version/Date.
    3. Copy and paste the information to the right of BIOS Version/Date in the value column, into your reply.
The latest version on the HP Drive Page for your particular notebook is F.66. It could be that a lot of updates other than BIOS came through and BIOS just hasn't come through quite yet (if this is the case, it would be fine to manually install the latest version). If you have a version higher than F.66 by some chance, go back to F.66 by just downloading and installing it.
The BIOS being out-of-date or just out of sync with the other updates that came through, could definitely cause an issue like this.
Please let me know if you have any questions or if these suggestions helped (this could help others with the same issue). I'll keep an eye out for your reply!

  • Why doesn't my MacBook Pro recognize external microphone?

I have MacBook Pro that I purchasd 1 year ago.  Have tried 3 different headsets by 3 different companies and the microphone is not recognized, my voice keeps going through the internal microphone, even after changing the settings.  One had a jack connection, one was wireless USB, and this 3rd one is wired USB.  I tried the wired USB on my old white MacBook and the microphone worked.  So how can I get the microphone to work on this laptop?  Must be missing something obvious.  Thanks.

    Hiranoyama,
Is this a USB headset? Or are you plugging up to the input and output ports (if you have both)?

  • HT3648 I have an iPod touch 3rd generation. I would like to test it with talk to text for my deaf mother. I have downloaded the dragon program but I need an external microphone. Can you help?

    Hello,
I think my iPod touch is a 3rd generation. It is a 4.2.1 Version, 8 GB.
My 89 year old mother has totally lost her hearing. I would like to experiment with my ipod touch to see if an ipod is what she could use in her assisted living arrangement.
My ipod does not have an internal microphone as far as I can tell.
I see on the internet that I can purchase an external microphone.
I do not want a headset microphone just an external microphone where someone could speak into when the dragon app is on and it will transfer talk to text for her to read.
Can someone help me: a) do you think this will work.
    b) what do I have to do to make it work.
    Thank you.

  • Why doesn't my external microphone work?

Yesterday I opened up Garage Band to do a recording. I have been using my Blue SnowBall  microphone, and in the past, even as recently as the day before, Garage Band always recognized that mic by name, and would ask me if I wanted to use it. Now the only option it gives me is “USB Advanced Audio Device”. Obviously an automatic update had changed the way it handled recognition of my microphone. As I selected this option, I found that wasn’t the only change that occurred. The instant I made the selection all audio functions within Garage Band immediately failed, not just recording, but playing audio as well. Once I reverted back to “built in microphone” then my audio functions returned. So my Blu Snowball is no longer compatable with Garage Band. Coincidently, seconds later Garage Band advised me of the newest version of Garage Band, and asked me if I would like to update. I have seen that question before, and the answer is no. I have had too many problems before with updating. Most recently I updated to Yosemite OS X and all my projects in i-Movie became corrupted. I also read on the net that the new Garage Band frequently causes older Macs to crash. So how do I return functionality to my microphone? If it worked before it should work now. Functions should not be taken away from me. I should not be forced into updates that bring me more headaches.

Today I found that when I select "USB Advanced Audio Device" for my "input source" that if I go to garage band "preferences" and check my "audio output" it has also been automatically changed to "USB Advanced Audio Device". I'm not sure what kind devices this update was designed to accomodate , but my device is nothing more than a microphone, thence the reason I have no sound. This will happen every time I turn on or plug in the microphone, but I can still use the microphone by manually going into preferences and changing the audio output to either "system setting" or "built-in output" every time I connect my external microphone. I thought I checked all my settings and preferences before when I was trying to figure out why I had no sound, but either I missed it before or there has been another update.

  • EXTERNAL microphone not working on T61, Colleagues with T61s having same problem

I am unable to get any external micophone to work with my T61.  A colleague of mine spent hours with Lenovo support trying to get his to work but was never able to.  The internal microphone works but the quality is low.  I have tried several external microphones (3).  I verified the external microphones work with other systems.
As for drivers, here is what I have tried so far:
    SoundMAX driver uninstall
Installed Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio
Installed SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio driver (5.10.1.5520)
None of this made any difference.  When I plug in an external mic, all applications, including the SoundMAX Control Panel > Microphone >  Setup Wizard, detect zero sound from the external microphone.  I have muted/unmuted the external microphone, muted/unmuted the microphone in Windows, boosted/decreased the volume, used the Microsoft microphone troubleshooting wizard, etc., etc.
Please help!  Using an external microphone is very important for my work (speech recognition) and for several of my colleagues.  If we would have known external microphone do not work with T61s, my company would not have purchased these.  Now we are all stuck until we get new laptops again (2 more years)!
P.S. One strange thing I noticed while plugging and unplugging is that if I plug in headphones to the external microphone jack, one of the headphones (R, I think) becomes an "external microphone."  The quality is terrible but applications register sounds coming through the external headphones.  Why then have none of the 3 different external microphones I've plugged into the mic jack worked?!?!
    System:
SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio (Driver 5.10.1.5520, Location 65535, C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ADIHdAud.sys is 5.10.01.5520)
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP2
    Intel Core2 Duo CPU
    T7300 @ 2.00GHz
    2.99 GB of RAM

I am having this same problem and am also using voice recognition software.  Have you found a resolution yet to this problem?  I have not.  Please share if you have.
    Thanks!

  • Linking external microphone to ThinkPad T430

Hello,  we are trying to use our ThinkPad T430 to support an external microphone.  The microphone is coming in via a mixing desk.  Previously our laptops have had two input points - audio and microphone and we have connected via the microphone input. However, on this new laptop we only have one audio input option and now cannot hear any sound when we use this.  Is there another piece of kit we need (splitter?) or some changes to the settings on the laptop?  Thanks for your help.

  • IMac i7 External Microphones not working

Out of the box, no external microphone will work!
    I have tried many.
It seems the system does not even notice that something is plugged in to that port.
Is anybody else having this issue?
Could this be a factory hardware defect?
Tried Soundflower and many other things / settings. No Luck.
Normally I would not care, but I need Skype every day. The internal Mic works, but that is not good enough.

    Hi DaBigness
The iMac's Audio Input is for Line- Level or amplified devices like (Stereo receivers, CD & DVD players, iPods, MP3 players, etc.) See > [Line- Level|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Line-level]
To connect a non-amplified microphone you will need to patch it thru an amplified stereo device such as a stereo receiver, a pre-amp, a tape player, an MXL iBoost or a Griffin iMic just to mention a few options. For example's see the > [MXL iBoost|http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/MXL-iBooster-Guitar-and-Mic rophone-Interface?sku=243800] or the > [Griffin iMic|http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic>
