Internal modem failing to connect via dial-up

I'm new to posting questions. Every time I try to connect using dial-up I get the message failed to detect dial tone. I tried to connect in different buildings and using new phone line (wire?) with no success. Tonight I created a new location in network preferences, tried and failed. Created a new user as a test, tried and failed. I cannot try in another building for a day or so. Anybody able to help? Thanks.

Hi Again starlite!
I hope you're feeling better.
Have you ever been able to connect with the PowerBook?
I don't know about your PowerBook, but on my iMac, the Modem port & the Ethernet port look very similar. Make sure you haven't inadvertently plugged into the Ethernet port.
Below is how I set my Network Preferences, using AOL. I don't know if the same configuration will work for you, but it may help to compare how yours are set. What ISP are you using? I'm guessing that you're on campus.
If you have any questions, please ask them before preceeding.
First, be sure you know what version of Modem you are using.
Disconnect from the Internet.
Navigate to:
HD > USERS > YOUR HOME > LIBRARY > PREFERENCES
If present, move to Trash:
com.apple.internetpref.plist (a file)
com.apple.internetconnect.plist (a file)
com.apple.internetconfig.plist (a file)
Don't empty the Trash just yet.
Before you change the settings below, you might want to make notes, or take screen shots of your present configurations.
Then, open System Preferences > Network
Location: Select "Automatic"
Show: Select "Internal Modem"
On the PPP screen, click PPP Options. UNCHECK ALL options
On the TCP/IP screen, Configure using IPv4: Select "Using PPP"
On the Modem screen, Select your modem from the list. I'm using an iMac (Summer 2001), and I have "Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90)" selected.
Check "Enable error correction and compression in modem"
"Wait for dial tone before dialing"
"Dialing": Tone
"Sound": On
"Show modem status in menubar" (This isn't necessary, I just like to keep track of it)
Also select your Country.
Then, still in "Network" preferences,
Location: "Automatic"
Show: "Network Port Configurations"
Make sure "Internal Modem" is checked and at the top of the window.
Click "Apply Now" at the bottom of the screen.
Quit System Preferences.
Sometimes changing the access number that you use will also help. Do you know how to do that?
Good Luck!

  • No Modem - How to connect Via Dial UP?

as there is no modem in the mac book pro computers, how can i configure it to use while on holiday where the only connection is a dial-up?
is there any way i can use an old airport base station i have as a modem to go through a dial up?
    any information will be helpful.

Methinks the Airport base station is not going to work as a solution when you want dialup.
What you need is a modem. Apple do a USB modem which is $49 (or whatever the equivalent is wherever you may be), but you ought to find this fast and check the settings before you leave. Trying to do anything on the fly like this always has its own set of problems.
Other modems may work, but you need to think about compatibility between modem, computer and OS.

  • Modem of A200_10X fails to connect via dial up

The notebook was bought in Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia and is being used in India.
The modem does not support dial up connections.

    Hi
I think you can not use the modem dial up connection because you are in another country.
Please remove or configure again the Modem region select utility.
This can be found under Programs -> Toshiba -> Networking -> Modem region select
    greetings from germany ;)

  • Internal modem will not connect

    Hi,
I have just purchased a used iMac G5 1.6 Ghz and am having problems getting the modem to connect.
I installed the original version of OSX 10.3.5 and the internal modem would not even show up in the Network pane. I tried doing the install twice and both times got the same result.
I tried upgrading to 10.3.9 using the MacOSXUpdateCombo10.3.9. and after the iMac restarted and I opened the Network pane I got a message that a new port had been detected "Internal modem" and to check the settings and click "Apply Now". I did that and was then able to enter my ISP settings for the Internal modem. When I open Internet Connect the settings are all correct, but when I try to Connect the modem says it is "Connecting", but I don't hear any dial tone or dialling and after a few seconds it says "Disconnecting" and will continue to do so until I restart the computer.
Is it possible that the modem is dead and is there any way for me to do a hardware diagnostic to make sure? When I run the Apple Hardware test it just shows "Device found" beside the modem.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we live in a rural area and a high speed modem is not even an option.
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Welcome to the discussions.
Try sending a fax (via the print dialog) to a friend.
If that works, then the problem is not your hardware.
Thanks Barbara for replying to my problem.
I tried what you had suggested about sending a fax via the Print dialog and when I look at the Internal Modem window it just says "Preparing fax" and will stay like that until I click on "Stop Jobs". No dialtone, no dialing out, nothing.
Since I sent the message I have also tried creating a new network location in the Network pane using the Network Setup Assistant and I get as far as a dialog which says "Gathering modem information" that will stay that like that until I quit the Setup Assistant.
I have also had a look at the system logs in Console and I see this particular line whenever I try to connect with the internal modem:
localhost kernel: AppleI2SModemfamily::SSIStartUP -- SSIStartUP3034 two sync mode is UNSUCCESSFUL after 20 tries!
Does this mean that it looks like the modem is definitely dead? Is there no diagnostic tool that will tell me for sure whether the modem is actually dead, before I take it in to a service tech?
    Thanks again,
    Richard

  • OIM Database Applications Table fails to connect via GTC - Weblogic, Linux

    Environment:
    OIM - 9100 (public download)
    Red Hat Linux
    XLADM Oracle 10g
    Weblogic 8.1 SP6 - no cluster
I have installed the Database Application Connector and am trying to configure it via the Generic Technology Connector, but it keeps failing to connect. I know those parameters are correct and have validated via sqlplus \ SQLDeveloper. Also its the exact same database (not SID) that is hosting XLADM as well, so I know it can find the machine and such. I had another previous OIM on JBoss install locally on my Windows workstation that worked fine too. I can see in the log that the DBProvisioningTransportProvider is getting the props fine and then blows up when trying to connect. I have tried even updating the ojdb14.jar drivers in XELLERATE_HOME/ext and that doesn't matter. I'm sure it's something simple, environment related, or a bug. Any help is appreciated.

  • E55 fails to connect via cable or turn on Bluetoot...

    Good afternoon!
I have the following problem with my E-55:
I was often using the phone as a modem, connecting it with a cable and using Nokia Suite. Some 2 months ago the computer (and Nokia Suite) suddenly stopped recognising that a phone was connected (it remained undetected, although the battery was beginning to charge). But it was still connecting via Bluetooth.
About a month later a problem emerged with the phone's memory. Although all apps were installed on the memory card, and text messages occupied some 300kB, NetQin Mobile Guard was only finding 4.5kB files to delete from cache and I was constantly receiving an alert about lack of memory. I couldn't send text messages (although I could receive them), add new contacts, edit calendar entries or change mailbox settings (the e-mail boxes were empty). I could still use the phone as a modem connecting it via Bluetooth.
The day before yesterday, for the first time I couldn't turn on Bluetooth, but when I closed all apps (using NetQin Mobile Guard to do that), it worked.
But yesterday it didn't. I did a hard reset. The phone is working, now has over 50MB free memory (compared with the mere few kB earlier). But it still doesn't connect with the computer via cable, and I still can't turn BT on (alert: Cannot carry out Bluetooth operation).
    1. What can be the reason?
    2. Can it be repaired? (I expect deep reset does the same as hard reset, so won't change much?)
    3. If not, is it possible to carry over contact and setting backup from Nokia Suite (in .nbu format; I expect it would have to be converted) into the phone and running it without connection with Nokia Suite?
Loads of thanks in advance for your help!
    Cheers!
    -Mike

    Hi m_b_p,
    Thanks for your post!
We're sorry to hear that your device has suddenly become unresponsive to activating the bluetooth. A wire connecting the bluetooth part to the phone may have been dislodges some how. As you have performed a hard reset, we suggest you to take your device to your retailer or Nokia Care Point to have it inspected.
You may need to bring a proof of purchase.
Let us know how you get on with this.

  • Facetime "Fails" to connect via Airport Extreme using Comcast?

    Greetings,
First time poster... tried researchings specifics on my situation and couldn't find anything so posting here to see if a solution has been found.
I used to have Verizon DSL for ISP with Airport Extreme as my wireless router.  Everything worked  including Facetime (only issue was the need for speed).  Switched to Comcast as ISP which uses cable and had the Tech reconnect it to the Airport Extreme to behave as the wireless router.  Internet is on and good... got a green light on the Airport Extreme.  However, when attempting to connect via any device using Facetime (it will ring but as soon as it is answered I get "Fail" message and it ends) be it my laptop, desktop or either of our iphones I have IOS7 and IOS6 respectively same error.  Did not make any modifications to Airport settings or any of my devices.
When checking the common response to this issue was a potential "Blocked Port" situation... but by digging a little deeper it appears that Comcast does not block ports that are relevant to Facetime (please confirm).  I didn't see anything else that would suggest a solution at this point.
Help would be greatly appreciated as we enjoy using facetime to have our 6 month old daughter connect to our grandparents.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

The USB port on an AirPort Base Station other than the 802.11n model is only for use with an USB printer; hard and flash drives will not be recognized. The compatible base stations include version 5.0 of the AirPort software on a CD.

  • Connecting via dial up connection

On a cisco router that has an aux port can be set up with a dial up connection as a backup. But, my question is how is this set up? for example, Do I plug in a land line to the router, setup the router aux port, and then dial in from anywhere? Or, is it the same as explained previously, but instead of plugin in a land line to the router I need a modem such as the Multi Tech MultiModem ZDX V.92 Voice/Data/Fax Modem? so it will be connected phone to modem and modem to router?
    Thank you.
    Alex

    Alex
You would connect phone line to modem and connect modem to aux port.

  • Canon MX860 Fails to connect via wifi

Our MX860 suddenly stopped working. It's been a reliable printer on our home network for a few years now.
"Support code 300: The printer does not respond..."
I turned it off/on, which has been sufficient to resolve any hiccups in the past. No change.
I restarted the primary Mac (an iMac running 10.8.5). No change.
I downloaded the latest driver from Canon and installed it. No change.
I downloaded the Canon IJ Network Tool and connected to the printer via USB and ran through the setup process. It seemed to go smoothly, but at the end where the network version of the printer and scanner are supposed to appear in the Default section of the Add dialog for adding a printer, no dice. The USB printer and FAX entries are there, but no new network printer or scanner entries to select.
On the front panel of the printer in the WLAN setting list it reports:
    Connection: Active
    SSID: <mywifinetwork>
    Communications mode: Infrastructure
    Channel: 6
    Data encryption: AES
    Network authentication: WPA2-PSK
    WEP bit: Disable
    IP address: 10.0.1.191
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default gateway: 10.0.1.1
    MAC address: 00:00:85:F5:DA:A1
Any tips/insight on what I should try next would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Try turning off the power again, but this time disconnect the power cord and USB cable for 5 minutes.
Then reconnect the power cord and turn on and check the network settings (in case the IP address has changed - it should not have but check anyway). Then open Network Utility (Applications > Utilities) and select the Ping tab. Enter the IP address of the MX860 and press Ping. You should get a ping response for each packet sent. If you do, then it shows there is a working path between the Mac and the MX. If there is no response, then there is an issue with the wireless connection between the Mac and the MX.

  • Failing to connect via HDMI port on Marantz sr7002 AV receiver.

I tested the HDMI ports with other equipment and they work fine. The Apple TV works fine when connected directly to the TV, but I need the HDMI port on the TV to connect the AV receiver. I do get the sound from the automated voice ("please connect keyboard...., etc.) through the sound system, but no signal is reaching the TV when I connect the Apple TV to the AV receiver. I tried different HDMI ports, different cables, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rob - thanks so much for your help!  Could you tell me what "air sever or reflector apps." are? and where can I look for information about them?
Do you use them on the Ipad or on the PC?
Do I need a cable too and which one?
Sorry... I am not very technical as you can see, thanks for your help.

  • C6 with Belle fails to connect via ActiveSync

Using the same credentials as previously used (before belle) the exchange account refuses to connect.
Keep getting "Invalid Exchange ActiveSync credentials. Check credential settings."
I am using Nokia C6 and before I upgraded to belle (both with symbian and anna) I was able to sync my calendar and emails.
But, after the upgrade I started to get the error.
Recently I purchased my N8 for my wife and I thought I should try it out again on the N8 (that does not have the belle upgrade yet). The activesync worked like a breeze.
Our company certificates require user to setup the phone lock code active. I was forced to do that on N8 as soon as I setup the activesync.
But with belle, if I turn the phone lock off, it doesn't even prompt me for that. Right now I have the two phones setup exactly the same (with the lock code active). The N8 connects and syncs up just fine and C6 does not.
I see other people are facing similar issues. A fix would be appreciated.
    - Amit

I contacted Nokia support and all they could offer was soft reset, hard reset and then reinstall.. none of those worked..
Looks like there are lot of people facing problems with belle and ActiveSync. Anyone has experience solving it? oh! and swype ain't the problem.
    Thanks.
    - Amit

  • Internal modem/fax: no dial tone

    Hi folks,
Yes, another 'no dial tone' problem
I have a 20" iMac G5 running 10.4.8 in the U.K. that seems unable to make a connection via it's internal modem to the internet or dial out to send a fax. Whenever it tries to make a connection it will eventually timeout after ~10 seconds claiming there is no dial tone - there is a dial tone on the line however. I've had a look through other posts mentioning things like this but there doesn't really seem to be any solutions out there that I can see. After just going out to Kinkos to send a fax for the princely sum of £8 (~$16) I'd like to finally get this flippin' thing working!
The following things have been tried:
    - The modem has been connected to a regular phone line (connected telephones have a normal steady dial tone, no answerphone tone you can get with BTs 1571 service in the UK)
    - The modem has been connected to an active DSL phone line via the filtered phone socket
    - Different phone cables have been tried
    - A different user account behave exactly the same
If it makes any difference, this iMac was originally bought in Switzerland. The international preferences have been corrected to make the iMac think it is London. I've never been able to get the modem to work, so I'm not sure if the modem is at fault, or if it's an OS X problem...
If anyone has any ideas/suggestions, I'm willing to try anything.
    Cheers.

    From Free Dialup.net.UK...
    http://www.free-dialup.net/free-dialup-uk-articles/dial-up-modems.html
"Q: Why my modem is not getting Dial Tone?
    6. Many voicemail systems use a "stutter" dial tone or beeping when you pick up the phone to indicate that you have voicemail waiting. These unexpected sounds can make the modem think there is no dial tone.
    7. In extreme case, your modem may not be designed for the phone system in the country in which you are trying to use it."
Acoustic couplers should work when all else has failed...
    http://www.roadnews.com/html/Articles/a31.htm
You can also run into problems with dial tones overseas. Your computer may not recognize the dial tone of the country you are in as a "dial tone." Depending on the modem software you are using, you might need to put a check in the Ignore Dialtone checkbox in your modem software setup window.
    What about digital telephone systems?
Modems communicate using analog or sound signals while many new telephone systems use digital signal processing. Digital systems are unable to process analog signals, making it impossible for modems to communicate.
Seems that there very well might be some diff in the Modems between Switzerland and UK...

  • Apple USB Modem rarely connects via PPP

Greetings from Antarctica. My employer offers me dialup internet from my dorm room here in Antarctica. Using my Apple USB external modem, V.92 (error correction and compression in modem enabled) and all the correct username/password items, I am able to connect to the local dialup network maybe one time in ten.
The modem gets a dial tone, dials, goes through the concert of tones, the tones disappear just like when a connection is made, but only about once in every ten tries will it actually establish a connection. The other times it will sit there saying "Connecting" until eventually it times out and disconnects the phone line. I have tried using v.90 and v.92, with and without error correction and compression in modem. No difference.
The PPP configuration is to send PPP echo packets, verbose logging is off, Terminal script is none, the box is checked to use TCP header compression.
I am using a Santa Rosa MacBook with 10.5.5, 2 GB RAM. If there is a log file somewhere that would help someone troubleshoot this with me, please give me specifics on where I might find it. If you want me to try and connect with the Terminal window instead, then I will need very specific instructions.
    Thanks from McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

I'm not positive here as it could be a hardware failure of my usb modem, but leopard seems to have broken this device for my G5 iMac. Even in Tiger this modem was never as good as the built in ones on the G4 models and would be buggy sometimes and not as fast as the internal G4s. I had wondered if it would work on intel versions with Leopard better, but your experience isn't a good sign.
My solution was to use a G4 mini using it's internal modem and internet sharing via airport which worked well and gave me more freedom on my other laptops as well, though it be at the slow speed of dialup. I would imagine a G5 PowerMac would also work with this modem especially if running Tiger. If this was an early Macbook, it might also have shipped with Tiger, but no idea how this would play out with the Intels vs PPC.
Not sure how you get phone service in Antarctica but I'm guessing there is some sort of satellite device involved. Is anyone else having trouble connecting with modems through the setup? I know PPP is not well supported in certain compression modes such as Voip, but I would imagine if you had voip broadband would be available.
Bottom line seems to be the G4s are gold if you need dialup service. Best of luck!

  • Internal Modem configured but not connected?

I have a iMac G5 on broadband(along with a PC)servere was down for 2 days now okay Mac had to be reset to work again but PC okay, now the message I get on Mac is "Internal Modem is configured but is not connected. Internal Modem is set up to dial........ how can I undo this so its on the broadband scene again? I have been searching hard drive etc to find how to configure it but no luck there.
    Help will be appreciated.
    Barb

    Hi barbaramac:
Could you provise some more details as to your setup, how do you connect to the internet? DSL Cable?
Assuming you have a home network with a router, you need to go into 'System Preferences' and choose 'Network', select either 'Ethernet' or 'Airport' from the drop down menu whichever applies and 'configure IPv4' by DHCP on the TCP/IP tab. That should do it.

  • Internal modem and user accounts

    10.3.9 / PB 17" 1.5ghz
I have to use a dial-up connection at the moment. When I dial-in with one user account the internet connection is terminated when I switch users (I have fast user switching enabled). When I was accessing the internet via broadband with my airport express I would never lose the connection.
Is it possible to stay connected via dial-up modem when I switch users?

    Gave up
