Internal Pioneer DVD drive to an external drive

Hi there
I recently bought a S-ATA & IDE USB 2.0 Adaptor to rectify my Firewire connection going down , recently. I can now connect my old external Firewire hard drives via USB 2.0. Great!!
However I realised that this adaptor also allows me to power up and connect my old Pioneer DVR 110D, but, I can not get my mac to recognise it..Any ideas anyone
Thanks
PowerMac G5 1.8 DP   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This should be possible. Any chance the drive is not
functioning?
How does this adapter actually interface a drive to
the Mac? Does it have a functioning external power
supply?
Hi Daddy Paycheck
The adapter connects to the actual back of the drive via the IDE or the S-ATA connecting block. It does have a separate power supply depending on wether or not it is an IDE or S-ATA drive. In this case it is a IDE drive and I connect up the power cable direct to the drive and the adaptor is powered via the USB 2.0 cable.
The drive was functioning about a month ago when I swapped it for the present drive , a Pioneer DVR- 112
Hello! If you haven't tried it I'd reset the pmu and
see if that helps. And yes you should be able to use
multiple drives. I have the old internal dvd drive
along with an external firewire dvd recorder and a cd
recorder that's firewire also. Tom
Hi Tom
I reset the pmu about a week ago when I was trying to get my Firewire hard drives to work, which is how I came to get this adaptor in the first place. The adaptor does work with these hard drives, after I have taken them out of the Firewire enclosures. I came to ther conclusion that something is wrong with my Firewire connection although I can import video footage from my Digicam with out problems
Thanks
Ian

  • Satelite L645 doesn't recognise the internal CD/DVD Drive

thing is,  this computer a Satelite L634 SP4019M doesn't recognise the internal CD/DVD drive, not even as an unocupied drive in the "My Computer" folder (just the C: drive is displayed). I have searched and I don't think I will find drivers for this online... what else can I do?
Does it has anything to do with this very same computer not recognising it's own touchpad as well? (I use an external mouse, to compensate)

    Good for you.
In case somebody viewing this doesn't understand what happened (I don't), the usual fix is here.

  • New pioneer dvd drive, can i use to install tiger or is it a catch-22?

what i am concerned about is a catch-22 type situation. i recently bought a pioneer dvd-110. currently i am on os 10.3.8. so i installed the verison of patchburn i needed for 10.3.8. (there are also versions of patchburn for jaguar and tiger as well). a few tests confirmed my drive can play cds, burn dvds of backup files, etc. here's the possible problem: if i use this dvd drive to install tiger off the cd, at some point when tiger is on my system and it's going thru the last few installation procedures, will my dvd drive suddenly stop working since my G5 would haveh tiger on it at that point but the patchburn version is for panther??? i think i have heard about folks using the pioneer dvd-110 without patchburn and everything still worked fine for apple apps. but has anyone tried this sequence of events with this particular dvd drive? maybe i am worrying about nothing. thanks so much for your help!

Why Patchburn is not necesary with 10.4.4? I still
can see unsupported in system info...
I'm not using Patchburn under 10.4.4 with my DVR-110D, and it also shows as unsupported. It burns just fine, though.

    Hi,
You may need to disable Secure Boot - see the guide on the following link.  While in the Boot Options, you may also need to Enable Legacy Devices.

  • New Pioneer DVD drive not recognized in profiler

I have used these forums many times to solve my problems so a big thanks to everyone who contributes. I've never had to actually ask a specific questions until now so here goes....
I have an e-mac running 10.3.9. My superdrive started to get flakey (not recognizing some DVD's, spitting them out, etc.). I followed all the advice here but no luck so I finally replaced the original drive with a Pioneer DVR-118. My problems still exist and the system profiler is telling me I have a Pioneer DVR-106. Did I do something wrong on the install? Shouldn't the profiler recognize the new drive?
A big thank you to anyone who can help me through this.

Since your computer's Apple Hardware Test is on a disc and the built-in optical
drive won't work, you may have to see if an external optical drive capable of
being used as a boot, is available. This of course would be a FireWire combo
type drive that can read & write DVD & CD media and boot Macs.
You may have to see if you can archive anything worth saving from that eMac
and put it on media via another computer; if the eMac can be booted into
Target Disk Mode where it is seen by another computer as a FireWire drive.
In fact, you could see (in a reverse scenario, perhaps?) if another computer's
optical drive could be used by your eMac, if a second healthy computer is
available & then boot it into FireWire Target Disk Mode to see if you can use
the optical drive in there as though it were a peripheral. - This may not work.
I've not had to really use FireWire Target Disk Mode, but do have cables,
and an externally enclosed LaCie FW HDD which is partitioned for clones.
There are times where a FireWire externally enclosed superdrive is handy.
There may be some damage on the logic board or some circuit that does the
controlling of ATA devices on one of the buses in the computer. That would
be a possible cause of the issue. If the identity of this drive can be changed
by the user before it is installed, be sure that is set correctly for use in eMacs.
{The three eMacs I've owned, had issues early on and I got rid of them in mere
days of first purchase; at considerable distance and effort by me. Then I got
an iMac which was an unholy terror to debug after an 'authorized service' ctr
did their best to kill logic boards and sell me defective store-brand RAM they
were authorized to install in a place I was not. ThreeThousand Miles and Six
Months later, I finally got my iMac back, repaired. Only because Apple told
    them to read my test notes - & just install the parts I said it originally needed.}
Do you have a second Mac nearby (presuming yes, and using it online) which
may be used to attempta further diagnostic or testing of the eMac?
Not sure if an Apple Hardware Test would be sufficient to tell the issues in
your computer; if you have a way to make use of it via external FW. Hope-
fully someone with more extensive eMac and drive experience will advise.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • First my Super Drive, now my new Pioneer DVD drive.

This has been an ongoing problem that I have worked around, but the time has come to address it directly.
Just pass the warranty period on my Mac Pro, the Super Drive started acting up, would only eject intermittently. This went on until it would not open at all. After a while, and doing without, I put in a new drive, a Pioneer DVR-113NP. Over a much shorter amount of time the same thing seemed to happen to this drive.
I now have two optical drives in, connected & powered. When I try to eject, they give a hum & a whirl, sounding like they want to do what I asked, and then go silent.
This is frustrating, and has been for a long time. I have gone through all the various and sundry solutions that I have found, all to no avail.
Anything, aside from going to the "Genius" Bar? They have never been helpful, with any problem, are far from convenient, and are arrogant in their ignorance. Anything at all?
    Ray~

I have the same problem, and finally I replaced both drives with a cost of US$30 each.

  • Internal dvd driver on Imac 2008 24 inches needs replacing

I have an Imac 24 inches  2007 desktop would like to replace internal  cd dvd drive not working properly lots of noise

Instead of spending the money on replacing the CD/DVD optical drive in a six year old iMac, would be quicker, easier and cheaper to purchase an external USB or FireWire optical drive
Here's a place for 100% Mac compatible optical drives.

Stay away from Apple's new external optical drive. It only works with new Macs and is not great and is overpriced for what it is.
    Good Luck!

  • CD/DVD Install from an external usb drive

Is there any version of Solaris 10 (x86) or a download tool or driver that would enable me to install the OS from an external usb CD/DVD drive?
My internal CD/DVD drive on my older SONY laptop has gone bad and SONY support has been less than helpful in providing me any support for a replacement.

Not (yet?) with Solaris 10 x86, but it might work with current Solaris Express x86
    releases.
    But I've never tested this.

  • Lost / unrecognized External DVD drive

Been using a Pioneer DVD burner PATA in external firewire enclosure (with Prolific chipset), mostly successfully for 2 years (certain SL issues notwithstanding). Because of intermittent drive read problems, decided to buy Oxford 924 chipset enclosure (Lindy - SATA with PATA converter lead). Connected up, drive works OK but no disk in it is recognised - doesn't show CD or DVD in Finder, Toast says no disc present etc.
Cross checked whether problem is with Lindy circuits by putting back in old enclosure - now this is showing same issue. Same problems when connecting using USB too.
Suspect the .kexts have perhaps got confused as to which driver they're to use? Have cleared PROM, switched off, uncabled and left for hour before restarting. No change.
Any suggestions? Is there any way of resetting the Firewire settings to scan anew - though think they do this anyway on a full power up restart...
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately it sounds like you have troubleshot this down to a bad optical drive. Any chance that it needs to be cleaned?
Hi - I suppose it's possible it died at the precise moment I moved it from one box to another, and I plan to borrow another from my PC to cross-check tonight. Also to try USB interface connection on the PC. Having used the drive without any problem (other than Firewire failures) it seems strange that one minute it works and the next it doesn't. Should add that the electrics are fine - it oens the tray, loads and reads the disc etc fine - just doesn't show the disc within OS.
