As mentioned elsewhere with respect to the L505 series laptops, if your laptop uses the Realtek HD audio drivers try this two step process to improve the system sound volume levels. If these two steps don't work, try uninstalling via the Device Manager the installed audio driver and reboot the computer to let Microsoft install its own default audio driver.
First, either update to the latest Toshiba audio drivers via the Toshiba Support web site, or by downloading the latest Realtek HD Audio drivers from the Realtek website.
Second, once the audio drivers have been updated, enable "Loudness Equalization" on either the Start -->  Hardware and Sound --> Realtek HD Audio Manager --> Sound Effects tab, then click OK to save the setting change. Or on the Start -->  Hardware and Sound --> Sound --> Speaker Properties (select Speakers then the Properties button) --> Enhancements tab, scroll down the list of sound effects to enable "Loudness Equalization" then select the OK button to save the setting changes.
Once the drivers have been updated and the "Loudness Equalization" has been enabled the system sound audio level is much louder, however you may find the DVD and Audio CD audio levels are still low. No real fix for that issue yet from Toshiba.

  • BIOS for Satellite L505D-S5983 FAIL

    Howdy folk,
It's been some weeks since I set it aside, I'm giving this one last shot before I junk it. That would be a shame, because other than the BIOS, it appears to be a perfectly fine piece of equipment. I really want this box to run for me.
I got a hand-me-down Satellite L505D-S5983 with a caveat that the BIOS had issues. And boy does it. In attempting to get the BIOS difficulties addressed, I was trying lots of things recommended here. I changed settings hoping to access a USB keyboard, except that I apparently turned off the internal keyboard. Whatever I changed, In doing that the BIOS is now rendered absolutely out of reach.
F2 won’t bring up BIOS, F12 won’t lead to bootable drives menu. Wherever I got this tip, Control-F2 gets the BIOS to display, in fact holding most keys such as just Q results in BIOS display. But then that's the closest I can get. As soon as I let go of Control, I get dialogue "Exit Discarding Changes Yes No", pre-parked on "Yes". No keys or key combo will switch or register as Yes or No, and while held, no other keys navigate or alter the menus.
I've downloaded and burned a BIOS flash disk from the BIOS update file here. But we never get that far.
Any assistance in getting around this bricked mobo will be much appreciated.

I'm replying to my own post because I forgot to check "Email me when someone replies" on the thread starter.

  • No Audio or USB Ports after Recovery on Satellite L505D-S5983

I have recently done a system recovery with disks I created when I originally got my Satellite L505D-S5983. Which put the laptop back to an "out of the box" state...supposedly... I have been asking on a Microsoft forum for help with my problems, with limited luck.... It is still not working. I'm pasting my original posts here hoping that maybe somebody on here can help me.
    POST 1:
My Toshiba Satellite L505D is running 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. After about 4 months of downtime I recently started it back up. There were roughly 37 updates to install when I turned it on, as expected. The updates were downloaded and installed, but when the system was restarted the system froze as soon as the desktop loaded. I booted multiple times and every time it completely freezes immediately after start up. I am not even able to open the task manager (ctrl+alt+del). They system boots perfectly fine in safe mode, and I ran what diagnostics I could find and nothing shows up....according to Windows everything is fine.
After Going through this multiple times, I got sick of it and decided to do a system recovery. Not a system RESTORE...it was a system RECOVERY. The HDD was completely wiped, and the system was supposedly returned to its original form as it was out of the box. Getting my hopes up as it finished its process... The system worked fine through the initial setup (language, time, etc.) and then as soon as the desktop loaded it froze again!
So here I am with a completely wiped HDD (except for the factory toshiba software), and a Windows OS that will only work in safe mode... I would like to avoid reinstalling Windows, I don't have any disks or anything. So any help would be appreciated
P.S. let me elaborate on what I mean by "froze". The system is completely non-responsive. No cursor movement at all, touchpad, keyboard, USB ports, nothing. When I did the restore the cursor, touchpad and keyboard worked through the initial settings only. Even when the desktop is loading i get movement for a second or two before everything freezes.
    REPLY I RECIEVED:
    Hi,
Since the computer is working in safe mode, I would suggest you to start the computer in clean boot to check which third party program is causing the issue. To configure your computer to clean boot follow the link
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 7 in the article to boot to normal startup.
If the issue does not persist in clean boot then refer ‘Step 3’, ‘step 4’ and ‘step 5’ from the following link to narrow done the issue and find out which service or startup item is causing the issue.
MY RESPONSE POSTING MY CURRENT ISSUE:
Thank you, and yes that's exactly what it was. It turned out to be an ATI program for my AMD graphics card that was not installed properly. It makes me wonder if I had to do the recovery in the first place lol.
However now I have a whole other issue. Windows is now telling me that "No audio output device is installed".....
In device manager the yellow "!" is there (High Definition Audio Controller), it tells me that it is not working....yet it says that the best drivers are installed! So yeah...I have no audio now. The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?

Now Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers.
Then RIGHT CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.
1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on

NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the

Ok...so I have installed all of the appropriate drivers that I thought I may need from this website. I have tried ALL of those system analysis programs that were suggested. Every one of them lists my mobo simply as a Toshiba motherboard, with no audio card information. Which I'm assuming that is because it has an internal sound processor. My problem is that none of the properties, or ANYTHING I try, will give me information on what I need to fix this...
I would be more than willing to run the recovery again if I knew that I had everything I actually need... When I created my original recovery disks it created a third disk with "apps and drivers". I installed all of them...and still here I am... And I haven't even STARTED on my USB port issue yet...those don't work either, and they don't even show up in my Device Manager...sigh...
And please, a response that doesn't look like an automated response to try and sell software like the last one I recieved from the Microsoft forum would be appreciated
Thank you for your time, and apologies for the lengthy post, but I wanted to provide as much info as possible.

I would try another restore of the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. Maybe something went wrong in the process. Make sure everything works before applying any updates and adding any hardware or software.
Then add things carefully, rebooting Windows and testing the USB and audio at each step.
    Please note this.
The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?

  • Various problems with Satellite L505D-S5983

After getting a virus on my laptop I simply decided it would be best to reset the computer to factory settings.
So I pressed restart, then F8, and following that I followed the steps to factory reset my laptop.
Though it took the laptop about 15 hours to restart and reload everything? (I didn't do any kind of recovery, so it's as if I just took it out of the box, it did it's thing where it loaded it for the "first use")
So obviously I had to get some sleep within that 15 hours I had done this reset at night, so I wasn't aware of what it was doing? When I got on it the next morning it had finished the process for the first use. Then something went wrong when I had been on it and it froze so I turned it off. When I turned it back on it kept trying to do the "first use" process again.
Then at some point it stopped. So I was able to connect to the internet and download google chrome and such.
    Then more problems became evident.
The first one being the font is blurry. Now I'm not sure if it's because the screen is rectangular as opposed to monitor I'm currently using which is square.
The next one is a little more aggrivating, whenever I try to log on on its regular mode, I'll click on my account (the admin account, the only account on the laptop.)
When I click on it, it tells me that my accound has been disabled and that I need to contact the system admin - which I thought I was.
So now, after going through my user accounts when I'm on safe mode with networking, I can't find anything to fix that.
So now, apparently I've gone on safe mode too frequently where if I try to open chrome, my blue screen pops up indicating a crash, and it restarts.
So hopefully this is all fixable?
    Thank you for the help.

If it is taking that long to recover and you still have issues I would use your recovery media that you should make if you have not did so already. As Toshiba suggest it is best to make the recovery media when the laptop is new because it can become infected by a virus just like your main operating system.
You should not interrupt the recovery, meaning keep power supply plugged in and don't force a restart. If something happened to interrupt the recovery you can just recover to factory settings again except use the copy you previously made.
If you still have issues you may have other problems.

  • Volume Control Issue (Satellite L505D-S5983)

    My laptop: Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5983
    So here's the issue:
Just recently I've started having problems using my volume control located next to the SD card reader slot.. You know, the volume 'slider'. It's been acting rather strangely, when I try to adjust my volume it doesn't change at all from the current volume percentage that it's at... Even when I'm sliding the slider. So then, I have to go into the manual volume in my hidden icons menu to change the volume. However, after I go through this step, I am then able to use my volume 'slider' control, and it actually works.
    So, I'd like to know:
    A) Why this is happening?
    B) Am I able to fix this issue?
    C) How would I fix this issue?

  • Satellite L505D-S5983 freezing during start up

I will try to explain my issue as clearly and short as I can. I have this laptop just shy of a year, has about 2 weeks left on warranty, has had sporatic freeze up issues here and there that first appeared about 3-4 months ago, thought it was a battery issue, since it first happened when unplugging power supply - replaced battery, not the cause. I backed up all my files to seperate hard drive, burnt a set of recovery disks, proceeded to do a fresh install, during the process, the computer froze early, ok, so thought maybe files were corrupt on disc I burnt or was a hard drive issue, tried a known good replacement drive, still froze. Ordered set of recovery discs for the above laptop, during installation, froze during the first couple of minutes. I did eventually get the discs (3) installed under safe mode, but it has to continue in normal mode to complete the installation, but the same issue again, freezing up, about the third time the light bar crosses the screen. I know I may have no choice but to contact Toshiba, but I am open to all ideas I can try before I contact them. I also want to say that when it does freeze up , the only recourse I have is to hold down the power button to reboot.

I'm a little bit unclear. You tried putting a new HDD into the notebook, then booted to safe mode on that hard drive and tried to do a system restore?
EDIT: Regardless, lets check to see if it is an HDD Issue. Have you run a checkdisk? Boot into Safe Mode with command prompt and type:
"chkdsk /r C:", it will ask you if you want to schedule that to run at next bootup. Say yes and restart. It may take some time, especially if it is detecting issues.

  • Internal Microphone not working for L505D-S5983 (PLEASE HELP!)

    Hi,
I can't seem to get my internal microphone to work. I have enabled it under Sound->Manage Audio Devices
->Recording tab. However the green vertical bar does not detect any voice. After setting the Microphone boost to +40dB, it detected some noise (since it has some green light) but I realized it wasn't detecting my voice. Since this did not work, I re-set the Microphone boost to only +10dB.  I only have one internal microphone and no external microphone.
I have seen many postings on internal microphones not working on Toshiba laptops but couldn't find a solution to mine. Can someone please help? I think it's about time that Toshiba fix this issue after the countless complaints.

The low DVD and CD audio is frustrating. Had problems ever since I bought my L505 series laptop late last year trying to listen to DVD movies. There's a thread about this in the Sound forum where others have low DVD audio output, but no real solution to the issue. The only workaround for these low audio issues seems to be enabling "Loudness Equalization" on the Realtek HD Audio Manager (or Speaker Properties setting) and then using a headset or external speakers to watch a DVD move. There is definitely a problem that has so far been unacknowledged by Toshiba, with either the hardware or with the sound drivers as my previous Toshiba laptop didn't have this low sound problem on DVD movies and audio CD's.

  • Satellite L505D-S5983 - CD/DVD-ROM issue

    Hello.
I have a Windows 7 Home Edition laptop that will not boot from the CD-DVD-ROM drive. Under normal circumstances, I know that if the boot order is right, the computer should automatically boot from the CD. However, it instead refuses to acknowledge any bootable disks I have in there at all. I have tried from Super Fdisk bootable CD to Linux Mint 9 Live boot CD version i386. My computer seems to just skip over the CD_ROM entirely and immediately boot from the hard drive.
However, it can still read CDs and DVDs perfectly. I have no problem burning items on a CD or pulling items off. I also have no problem playing games or movies that require a CD or DVD.
    Solutions I have attempted:
Changing the boot order. Nothing changed.
    Creating new CDs. Nothing Changed.
Gently cleaning the drive. Nothing changed.
Pressing the left and right arrow keys during the POST. Though it did throw me into the screen in which I choose what I want to boot, my only option was Windows 7 in the end.
Checking the Device Manager. My drive is working perfectly according to my computer.
Changing drivers. Updating wasn't possible as I already had the latest drivers, rolling back wasn't an option because there wasn't anything to roll back to, and disabling and enabling changed nothing.
Is there anything else I can do? I'm trying not to buy a new drive, as I'm short on money. I'll do it if I have to, but if I don't have to...

  • L505D-S5983 Only One Internal Speaker Works

I bought this L505D-S5983 laptop in November 2009. It has all factory default hardware... I haven't added anything; but for the past few months I have been having issues with the internal speakers. I have read several speaker issues for this laptop on this forum, but no one has a similar problem that I can see.
The problem seems to be that sometimes the left speaker doesn't work (or puts out very little sound) while the right speaker has always worked. It seems to happen fairly often - I will be in the middle or a game, or playing music and the left speaker will cut out... sometimes it comes back, but the majority of the time its usually quiet.
I have made sure my realtek audio drivers are up to date and tried adjusting the levels and such under control panel and the realtek audio manager, but nothing seems to fix the problem. Any ideas?
