Internal speakers disappear when headphones are removed

My built in mac book speakers disappear when I remove my headphone. The system preferences says that they are not present. I've tried restarting and resetting pram. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried blowing into the headphone jack? There could be an accumulation of dust in there.

  • No sound when headphones are removed

I have a problem I seem to be unable to solve by myself. When I have headhones (or other external speakers) plugged in to my computer, the sound works great. When i remove them, the sound dissapears (the internal speakers don't seem to work). The sound isn't turned off (the volume is at max), but the soundcontrol is shaded and it is not possible to change it. At the same time, there's a red light in the speaker/headphone socket. What have I done, and what should I do?

Hello. I have EXACTLY the same problem you have.
I was very sad because I bought my macbook 1 month ago, I mean, it´s new!.
I started searching on the www and I found on several discussions forums for mac owners that many people have the same problem. It seems that apple audio jacks are not as good as we expected them to be.
When you use external speakers or headphones, sometimes the sensor inside the audio jack gets kind of "stocked".
Many people on this forums wrote that they inserted another headphones or speakers or even a hair pin to release the sensor and it worked.
So I recommend you to try it (I will too)...but carefully. ok?
    Good luck

  • Ipod does not pause when headphones are removed

My Ipod touch 3g does not pause when playing music when my headphones are pulled out or removed. Can someone help with this problem? Thanks in advance

if a restore hasn't fixed it then it's probably a hardware problem. is it still under guarantee? you probably need to take it to apple.

  • Pavilion d6 with Beats Audio and Windows 7: the Sound Stops When Headphones are Removed

The sound works fine, then I put in headphones and usually the sound plays fine, though sometimes it stops working after making a repeating sound for a second.  When I remove the headphones the sound will not come out of the speakers and if I plus the headphones back in no sound comes out.  The only way I can get the sound to work again is to restart my computer.
If I run the sound troubleshooter it doesnt detect a problem.  I tried the fix in this thread http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-PC-Sound-and-Audio/Beats-audio-pavilion-dv6-No-sound/td-p/2169..., but that didn't work.  I would really appreciate a solution, thanks a ton!

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Download the IDT Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder.
    http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63501-64000/sp63555.exe
When done, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager and open up Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the IDT device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall.
When done, shut down the notebook by holding down the left Shift key as you click on Shutdown to temporarily prevent a hybrid boot.
Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold down the Power button for 20 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.
Let Windows fully load - it will automatically load an audio driver, but just let this complete.  Then open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, right click the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Playback Devices.  Left click 'Speakers/HP' once to highlight it and then click the Set Default button - check if you now have audio.

  • IPod NOT pausing when headphones are removed

This feature has been entirely sporadic on my iPod. Sometimes when I remove the headphones, it pauses. Sometimes it doesn't. The software is the latest version, the iPod's in great condition, something just seems to be malfunctioning. I probably wouldn't complain about this, but I use it in my car with a tape deck adapter and in order to turn it off so it doesn't die, I just pull out the headphone jack, expecting it to pause. And then, of course, it doesnt....which *****....
    Anyway, any ideas?

if a restore hasn't fixed it then it's probably a hardware problem. is it still under guarantee? you probably need to take it to apple.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • IPhone 4 soundis very low when headphones are used

my iPhone volume is extremely low when i plug headphones in when listening to Netflix, Pandora, etc. When i unplug the headphones, the volume is normal when coming from the speakers in the phone- this only happens when we use headphones. We took the phone to the Apple store yesterday and they completely replaced the phone with a new one- and the new one is doing the same thing- you can barely hear anything when headphones are used.. all our sounds are turned all the way up- if there a way to configure the sound settings in iTunes for your iPhone???

This sounds silly but did you remove the plastic tabs covering each ear plug?
If so then read here : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802

  • I currently have no sound from my internal speakers. When I go to system preferences, internal speakers is not an option - there is nothing there. What should I do to fix this?

I don't know what to do - I don't have any sound coming from my internal speakers, and with headphones there is still no sound coming out. When I go into system preferences under sound, there is nothing there - it says 'no output devices'. What should I do?

    MacBook Pro model?
Hard to suggest a solution without knowing the model.
The following tips may not apply to latest MacBook Pro 13 inch model.
Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and  remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • Front panel audio wont mute rear audio when headphones are in.

    Hello,
As the title says my sound isn't muted on the rear speakers when I plug in my headphones. The front panel audio didn't work at first, it said in the manual to disable front panel jack detection. Once I did this the audio came through the front panel, but is not muted at the rear, so I have sound from both the headphones that are plugged into the front and the speakers that are in the rear. The option to mute the rear output when headphones are plugged in is enabled, the speakers are plugged into the green jack, the rear speakers are set to stereo line out and the front is set to headphones.
Can anyone help, at the moment I have to keep unplugging the speakers to listen through the headphones without disturbing anyone else, which with the placement of my computer is not convenient.

    Hello,
I have used the link, but the drivers just install the same one I already had (both the rar and the exe do this), even if I remove the previous drivers via programs and features. Unfortunately the problem still persists, I am really stumped as to what is causing it. I am not sure if I have AC'97 or HD Audio connectors on the front of the case, as the case came with absolutely no documentation. I have provided a link to the manufacturers website if that could help in anyway.

  • IPod does not turn back on when headphones are plugged in.

    Hi all,
In my previous iPod, it would automatically pause a song when the headphones are removed and if the iPod is off, it would automatically turn the iPod on once I inserted the headphone jack.
My 4G iPod for some reason does not turn the iPod on automatically when I insert the headphone jack. Is this normal or is there some setting that I need to change to accomodate this?
    Thanks for any help,
    Ed

Yep, the problem seems to appear when the iPod has been left to sit for an hour or so. Unplugging the headphone jack will pause the song and after a while the display will cut off. Plugging the jack back in does not turn the iPod back on, however hitting the menu button will turn it on where it was last left.
I could have sworn my previous iPod didn't behave this way; it would come back on when the jack was plugged in.

  • Is it possible to use internal speakers with the headphones connected?

as the connection of headphones is on the back of the iMac, it would be very useful to be able to switch between the internal speakers and the headphones, without ever having to unplug the headphones from your Mac Is this possible?

Although it still means unplugging I bought one of these though I do use headphones very infrequently:
    http://www.johnlewis.com/belkin-speaker-and-headphone-splitter/p230405301
but at least I don't have to fiddle around the back of the mac and risk,in time, damaging the socket on the mac.
If you decide to purchase one, be careful where you buy from as there are Belkin imitations around ie eBay and indeed Amazon where the quality is suspect particularly if it only costs a couple of £s'. Bought mine from a renowned retailer with genuine Belkin blister pack.

My ipod 5th gen won't let me adjust volume when headphones are plugged in, but when they are not I can adjust the volume on the speaker.  How do I fix this?

Try a hard reset of the Nano. To do this, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
I assume you have double checked to make sure you are plugging the headset all the way in meaning the white part of the headset is flush with the body of the Nano?

The Retrospect you used way back when is no longer around. The company was sold and that company produced a new version of Retrospect - Retrospect 8.x
So, as you've been told, you would have to be running a Tiger system with an old version of Retrospect software (5.x or 6.x - you would need to know) assuming you can find the software.
As best I can remember you cannot extract files from a Retrospect backup except using the software since Retrospect did not normally make a file by file backup rather it created an archive of the files in the backup. I'm assuming that the EMC/Retrospect people have told you that old Retrospect backups are not accessible by Retrospect 8.x?
