Internal speakers no longer available under 10.4.8

After I updated to 10.4.8, my computer seemed fine, and I was able to play sound, until I restarted it. Now it doesn't regonize my internal speakers. When I try to play anything, the red light in the sound out jack comes on. (any there is sound if I plug in external speakers.) I tried to adjust the sound out options in the control panel, but my internal speakers are no longer available! I know they are still working, because the computer chimes at startup, and they were working just a few hours ago. I tried restarting, zapping the PRAM, but all to no availe. Any ideas?

On Sep 27, Xanthene posted this:
"Solved! For all those that get this problem. Plug your external speakers into your line in input and wiggle it around a bit. I did this on my and the red light from the digital out turned off and my sound was back."

  • Why does my internal speakers no longer show up in my sound preferences?

In February, I updated my MBP 15" to 10.7.3. After restarting my system, the internal speakers were no longer listed in my available outputs under my sound preferences. I wasted an hour of my time talking to phone support only to hear the same stuff I had found online to try to troubleshoot the problem. Finally they told me to go to the Genius Bar. I went to my local Apple store where they proceded to look at it for about an hour and in the end told me the way to fix it would be to just wipe the harddrive and reinstall OS X. I couldn't afford to do that at the time due to needing the computer for grad school and chose to wait till after school let out to do this. Now I have wiped the harddrive twice and reinstalled and STILL don't have sound.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to try to fix this?

It's a longshot, but you could try this:

  • Windows 7, Gateway ZX4971 All in 1 (factory OE components, never opened) Internal speakers no longer work after Windows Update

I have a Gateway ZX4971 that came from factory with Windows 7 installed, all specs and windows component info is below.
Everything worked fine for over a year then windows applied an update and I no longer have sound coming from my headphone jack or internal speakers.
I have tried restoring the system back to before the update and it didn't make a difference. I have also reinstalled windows and still no sound.
Audio troubleshooter does not discover any connection issues.
There are no errors in device manager, speaker properties, or Audio Properties.
Volume Mixer shows audio is being played with sound indicator.
I must use a USB audio dongle and external speaker to have sound

    Hi,
According to your description, since system reinstallation is not helpful, it's probably a hardware problem, it would be better to check if it is the device itself problem.

  • Internal speakers no longer work in 10.5.7 (17 inch MacBookPro)

    I have a MacBook Pro 17 inch 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (model MacbookPro3.1)
After installation of 10.5.7, the system does not seem to recognize the built in speakers anymore. The sound preferences panel only shows "Digital output" as an option, volume cannot be changed, the audio port lights up red whenever I try to play sound. The system acts as if digital optical output is connected while the port is empty.
If I plug in headphones (normal iPod headphones, not optical), they work and the sound is adjustable. So the system does switch to analog in that case. But when I unplug them again, everything reverts back to digital output, volume no longer adjustable, red glow in the port, no sound.
But: the startup chime does come out of the internal speakers!
Any ideas on how to get my speakers back to normal functionality?
    Thanks,
    Michel Colman

    Hi,
I have the same problem but in the opposite direction.
My internal speakers work just fine, but my system does not recognize the inserted headphone any more (even when i plug in my headphone the sound continues to come from the internal speakers).
I explained my problem in this thread:

    Do you have any suggestions?
    Have you found a solution?

  • Time Machine Backup No longer available under Lion

I was having a problem with Time Machine, although I didn't know it until today. It had been going through the backup procedure every day.  But today, I decided to go into Time Machine just to look around. It took several tries but it finally came up, however, there wasn't any dates listed on the right side other than today. On the Time Machine Preferences panel, it showed the oldest backup was from August. After reading some comments online, I went into the Select Disk option in the preferences, with the backup disk selected, I set do not back up. I then went back into the Select Disk option and reselected the same disk. Now it shows the oldest date to be none. Other comments said that it would update once a backup is done. When I attempted to do the backup I got an error message that the Backup Disk is not available. Here is the messages:
Dec  1 21:56:09 MacbookPro com.apple.backupd[482]: Backup failed with error: 19
Dec  1 21:58:18 MacbookPro com.apple.backupd[506]: Starting standard backup

This backup disk is mounted on an imac, which is also mounted on my MBP. I can open the disk and see all the backup files, however, Time Machine will not honor it (for some reason).
I have rebooted both the MBP and the imac, thinking that would fix it, but it hasn't. I have turned off all backups for now. Can anyone tell me if I can still use the old backups or do I have to start again? If I have to start again, what did I do wrong?

Try connecting it directly to your MBP.  To see the backups, you'll have to manually mount the sparsebundle they're in (since Time Machine isn't expecting that), and use the Browse ... option, per #E2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting
You may want to try repairing them, per #A5 in that same article.
If that either finds no problems, or fixes whatever it does find, re-connect it to the iMac and go through the setup procedure again, per #22 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Here's the next thing I tried, with no luck.
    MacbookPro:Volumes dwieder$ sudo tmutil inheritbackup
That only works when you get a new Mac, don't use the normal ways to put your data on it, but want to continue using the same set of backups.  See #B6 in the Troubleshooting article.

  • Internal iSight no longer available - firmware problem?

    Hi,
my iMac 17" Core2Duo (intel integrated graphics) is no longer able to recognize its built-in iSight.
    Symptoms:
The iSight is no longer shown in System Profiler as "Built-in iSight" with manufacturer "Micron", product ID 0x8501 and vendor ID 0x05ac, but as having Vendor ID 0x04b4 und Device ID 0x8613.
According to various USB device listings, this corresponds to a "CY7C68013 EZ-USB FX2 USB 2.0 Development Kit".
This, again, is a generic USB controller, which obtains its final USB vendor und device ID by writing firmware into the controller's EEPROM - obviously the base for the iSight USB controller. This firmware information seems to be lost now (the iSight worked as of last week).
    I already tried unsuccessfully:
    - PRAM reset
    - SMC reset
    - iSight driver upgrade from Bootcamp 1.1.1
So, essentially, what would be required is a tool to reprogram the firmware (such tools exist on Windows XP and Linux) and the iSight firmware image itself. I also downloaded the Firmware Restoration CD (V1.1), but this CD doesn't seem to support the Core2Duo-based iMacs yet.
Any ideas? I'd hate to send the iMac back to Apple for repair if a simple software solution could fix the problem.
    iMac 17" Core2Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Just a short blurb to inform you that I managed to restore the iSight's firmware. It's quite a bit complicated, my current solution involves using Linux and a modified version of the firmware download tool for the iSight Linux driver. I'm not sure if anyone else has had this problem so far. So, if you're interested in the precise steps involved, drop me a mail (or, if you happen to speak German, see http://www.macuser.de/forum/showthread.php?t=203758).

It's not a 'problem' it's a new feature of Lion called Auto Save.

  • HT2494 2012 MacBook Pro - no sound from internal speakers, red light in headphone port

    Mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15".
I normally use external speakers plugged into headphone jack.
The other day I unplugged the external speakers and when I re-booted my Mac, I got the start up sound
but I have no sound coming from my internal speakers.  In System preferences sound output I see no entry for internal speakers.
I also notice a red light shining in the headphone jack port.  I see on youtube that this problem is rather widespread.
Some suggest using a paper clip to try to turn the light out, but I am not doing that.
I have Lion installed, tried using the MIDI-app to reconfigure the speakers, but I only get sound if the headphones are plugged in.
Is this a software or hardware problem?
I have a genius bar appointment today at my local Apple retail store, and my mac is still on warranty but this
is troubling that you spend $2300 for a laptop and after a bit of regular use the internal speakers no longer work.
    Any ideas?
    thanks.

I agree Nick - it is a concern especially on such a basic function (sound) - Linc is right, the issue is microswitch, sounds like a bad design or a huge batch of sub quality switches, checking the forums this issue is common on MBP's.
Judging by the date and lack of further activity I assume you managed to get yours fixed at the genius bar ?
I finally fixed mine myself but posting reply for others who have same issue as this - however buyer beware folks, try this at your own risk !!!
The fix won't be liked by Apple Support, the genius bar, or the repair shops but it worked for me after over 12 months of using headphones / external speakers - WHAT A PIA !
    Method -
Held  Macbookpro on it's side with screen open and headphone/ audio  port facing toward ground.
Took WD40 can with straw dispenser and placed straw inside audio port - sprayed 3 or 4 one second burst of WD40 into port.
Held MBP that way for 30 seconds giving MBP a shake to drain WD40 out
(I performed this whole excercise outside where the WD40 could drain out without an issue ;-)
I then took an old set of headphones and re-inserted / removed them from the audio port approx 20 times in and out with music playing on the MBP -  intially when inserted music will only come from headphones then eventually MBP internal speakers start working !
I've tried everything else including the cocktail stick and bent pin inserted inside the port to try and free micro switch - nothing worked it was stuck fast.
As stated, can't endorse this for anybody else - you do so at your own risk - just stating this is what I did to get mine working again !

help. I have a Google Hangout in 40mins and my sound seems to have vanished. I went to Sys Prefs and it came up with Digital Out....and the Internal Speakers option is no longer there. How do I reboot, or fix this please?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

This evening I opened my macbook to play something from itunes and I got no sound and this:

The last few times I've used headphones in my iPad, the audio has been all messed up to the extent where it's better to just use the internal speakers and not the headphones. I've tried multiple pairs of headphones to no avail.
The iPad was bought in mid-June, but I did not get extended Apple-Care warranty on it. Any idea of what's happenening?

Multiple means how many? If only 2 or 3, they could all be faulty. Try the headphones in some other device, to make sure they are OK. Or there could be something wrong with the headphone port.
Your iPad is still covered by the 1-year warranty so you should make a Genius appointment and have it looked at.
Another thing to try is to plug in the headphone jack a few times in succession to see if it frees up something inside the port.
