Internal Speakers Problem

Hi,
I am helping my sister diagnose a problem with her macbook. It is an '07 model.
Using screen share I determined there appears to be a software 'gliche' that prevents her mac from ID-ing the built in speakers and sending output to them. If she plugs in headphones, she can hear music, etc, but without, nothing, indicating the sound card is working properly.
I've gone through the obvious list of troubleshooting, no mute, etc. Most interesting is when I compare her system preferences to mine and do not have external speakers connected, mine shows in the sound menu "internal speakers" while hers shows nothing.
I've taken a screenshot of her system preferences. Link: http://filebox.vt.edu/users/kmtchll/Picture%202.png
If anyone has suggestions on this please let me know or [email protected]

There is a switch inside the MacBooks audio out jack which is malfunctioning in your sister's MacBook. There will be a red light showing inside her audio out jack if I am correct. The purpose of the switch is to tell the MacBook whether to send analog audio or digital optical audio. Your preference panel says that the MacBook is only ready to send digital audio, due to the stuck switch
This can sometimes be corrected by fiddling with a toothpick in the jack or sometimes by just plugging and unplugging a plug.

  • Problem with internal speakers of MacBook Pro

    Hi,
I wanted to know if anyone have experienced a problem with internal speakers of Mac Book Pro. In my MackBook the Internal speaker volume goes down automatically. I checked the System Preferences>Sound>Output , from there I check that it is in the middle ( Balance) However, the problem is still the exists. Just for testing I played an audio file and I moved the bar toward the right speaker it is the same and when I move toward the left speaker the whole sound goes off . Looks like one speaker stops working completely. Then I checked the Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup > Configure Speakers  from there I checked both left and right speakers and the channel frequency is fine. Still same issue.  I have no idea what is going on , I really need your suggestions to get this fixed.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Sound problems with Yosemite when switching from internal speakers to earbuds

After upgrading to Yosemite on my Macbook Pro, when I switch from using the internal speakers for sound and plug in my (Apple) earbuds, the sound stops working.  The sound also stops when I do the reverse and unplug my earbuds, nothing comes out of the internal speakers.  The only way to restore sound is to go into System Preferences, Sound, and select the output device (internal speakers, earphones, etc..).  Anyone else experiencing this problem after installing Yosemite, or know of a fix?

    I have the same problem..
there is something else happened twice with me, I plugged my macbook with a HDMI cable to the TV, and everything was ok, until I closed the macbook (sleep mode), when I opened the mac again,, the sound has gone! No sound from TV or macbook,, the only solution is to "RESTART"

  • HELP! Two problems - internal speakers and a bar that won't go away!

I have just bought my new 3G iPod Touch, but now the internal speakers don't work. I haven't done anything, but suddenly after I had had the headphones in and used external speakers, it won't play out loud without the headphones or speakers attached. The volume bar is completely gone, when I take out the headphones, and there were no problems before.
Also, in the "now playing"-page I somehow made a bar come up that shows elapsed time, repeat, Genius and shuffle, but now I can't make it go away since I have no clue how I made come up in the first place. It wasn't there from the beginning, so hopefully somebody can tell me how to get rid of it again? Or I would rather just know how to turn it on and off as it probably can be useful.

Type command + option + esc (all three keys together).
You will see a new pane called Force Quit Applications. In that pane select, one at a time, anything you do not recognize, and click Force Quit.
    Finally, select Finder and Relaunch.

  • Problems with soundoutput on internal speakers with Macbook 13"...!

Receiving my Macbook today 13" Alu...beautiful
One problem: Whatever sound comes out of the book on the internal speakers, its overlayed by a v. loud "pink noise"... I mean every sound...when u turn up the volume, the volume of the pink noise is not changing, but when its louder, u realize, that the music (for example) is recognizable in the background.
When I turn the book on...the starting sound comes 100% normal, after that the problem comes back..
Headphone out is completly 100% OK...no pink noise, all normal!
Anybody any idea? A friend told me, there was a similar problem in older laptop series, which was basically software based?
    Thanx 4 your help!!!!

  • Problem with sound from internal speakers

I have rescued an 867 hz TiBook from the trash heap. This machine was being discarded because it wouldn't wake up (just did this red, blue, yellow flashing thing, so it had to be restarted everytime it went to sleep) and because the internal speakers had stopped working. I took off the keyboard and flashed the pram, reset everything, wiped the hard drive and installed Leopard. This seems to have fixed the sleep issue but there is still no sound from the speakers. The headphone jack works fine, the built-in mic works and there IS an option for internals as the output in prefs, so it's not the headphone jack problem I've read about. I've searched and searched but I can't seem to find a solution that works... anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Mr. Waters,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You may want to at least follow the wires back from the speakers and see that they're connected, but it's likely the sound card which is unfortunately soldered onto the logic board. If so, the repair would mean replacing the logic board, rather expensive and not easy. Still a nice find for free.

  • L440: Sound problems internal speakers

When I pause playback of an .mp3, there's permanent white noise coming from the internal speakers.
Stopping the playback stops the white noise after approximately 4 seconds. I never had this issue with any laptop / soundcard. Can this be fixed?
I have the latest BIOS and drivers installed. Headphones are fine (no white noise).
Maybe the inbuilt L440 soundcard has a problem. I had to return my first L440 because there was a loud plop when starting playback and the left speaker was way quieter than the right one.
In the German part of this forum people are reporting problems realted to the internal speaker (cracking sound, white noise).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Blade,
It could be the speakers have a pinched wire causing a short, so the suggestion from the support specialist could be a good suggestion.
However, I believe we are aware of and have a fix for these symptoms via BIOS.  Let's give that a try first.
We believe there was a problem that caused these symptoms in BIOS 1.53 through BIOS 1.58 on L440 and L540 systems.
Download and install the latest BIOS version 1.60 (J4ET60WW), or newer, from the Lenovo eSupport website:

  • Audio output settings reset themselves on restart to internal speakers. I am getting tired of changing the output every time I turn on the Mac. This is a recent problem.

My sound preference does not retain its output setting on restart. It resets to internal speakers. I'm getting irritated having to change it every time I turn on the Mac. I'm running the latest system software (10.10.2) on an early 2008 Mac Pro with 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM. This was not a problem before Yosemite, and everything else seems to be running fine. Any help appreciated.

  • Problems in Boot Camp with Wifi and internal speakers

I loaded boot camp from Leopard with no known issues on installation. However, my wireless and internal speakers, which work fine in Leopard, do not work in Boot Camp. I'm guessing it's a driver problem, but I don't know how to proceed. I've tried reinstalling...
    Any help is appreciated.
    Kerry

Hi Kerrywm, I have exactly the same problem. I can get my Apple Bluetooth keyboard to work fine after I set it up using a wired keyboard. But after a single reboot, the wireless keyboard is 'lost' in Windows XP. It's a real nuisance, it's like the Bluetooth 'preferences' for the keyboard are not remembered by Windows XP after restart. One exception however, after restart, seems to be that the top right hand key, the CD eject key on the keyboard, does work as a '+ volume' control key - its really odd! Fox.

Problem: I lost the option to get the sound from external speakers or headphones to upgrade to Lion 10.7.3. It accepts only internal speakers.  I downloaded  Combo directly , without using "Actualización de software". I followed all the advice from the Apple community.  Can I use bluetooth speakers to solve this problem?  My Computer: iMac. 20-inch, Early 2008. Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

You may need to reset PRAM/NVRAM.
First, check that the jack is clean. Put some alcohol on a plug and insert it a few times. See if that helps.
is your output both digital and analog? If digital, is the red laser light visible in the socket? Do not look directly into the socket when checking.
If all else fails try a PRAM reset:
    Reset your computer’s PRAM
A small amount of your computer’s memory, called “parameter random-access memory” or PRAM, stores certain settings in a location that Mac OS X can access quickly. The particular settings that are stored depend on your type of Mac and the types of devices connected to it. The settings include your designated startup disk, display resolution, speaker volume, and other information.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
DO NOT HOLD These keys beyond the second startup sound!
    Release the keys.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.

  • Please help! Audio problems...internal speakers

HI all...everytime I put headphones into my audio port, the system wont return to internal speakers once I unplug them. It stays on headphones and the built in speakers....wont work. I have to restart a number of times before it goes back.
    Any help is highly appreciated
    Kind regards
    Phil

Interesting - after not being able to figure out ANY way to get the inputted sound to come through the speakers, I went to CD Spin Doctor 2.02 (Came with Toast), since the whole point was to input an LP and burn it. I thought I'd just do it soundlessly and hope I could edit the saved file afterward.
CD Spin Doctor has an option to allow playback through the speakers. I clicked it and it streamed through perfectly.
Now, it wasn't launched during all the fuss beforehand, so it being in active use isn't an issue. BUT, I suspect that it's installed something (?) that may have led to this issue.

  • Internal Speakers - Hardware and Software Problem

Earlier today, I had headphones plugged into my computer. Like so many other people on these forums, I now have a red light coming from my headphone jack and cannot play sound from my internal speakers.
BUT the Sound / Output section of System Preferences says that my "Built-In Output" is selected for use.
I've tried fiddling with the jack and whatever magic switch is inside with no luck. I've also restarted a couple of times. It seems that my computer's hardware thinks there are headphones in, but the software doesn't?
Any suggestions (especially those that don't involve bent paper clips or prayer!) are much much appreciated.

    Welcome to the forums.
Never insert a metal paper clip in the hole. Metal object stuck in holes that have electronics involved is not a good idea unless it was designed to fit in the hole. A plastic tooth pick is better. The red light in the earphone hole indicates your digital audio has been switched on. To turn it off you can use a plastic toothpick in the hole and try to flip the switch. One poster said he thought it was at the 3 o'clock position looking from the side. Other posters have got it to turn off by plugging in their headphones numerous times.
One even said it turned off after he blew into the hole. If you have compressed air you could try that also.
If this doesn't work you will have to get it serviced by Apple.

  • Ipod touch 4G problem--internal speakers not working.

Ipod 4g internal speakers failing after one month. Ipod was "rebooted" which helped for a few hours, then restored, which helped for about 1-2 hours, each time internal speakers worked for a while then stopped, Now rebooting useless, I suspect that restoring it again will allow internal speakers to work, but that takes 2-3 hours.
We can use the earphones via the jack, but want to use the internal speakers.
Have the latest operating system (version 4.3.2), and exclusively sync with itunes on Mac platform.  3 other ipod touches (3rd gen) in house work perfectly. The sound is on, bluetooth is not enabled (no bluetooth devices in home anyway and have never set it up on this ipod touch).
Any ideas besides spending 3 hours restoring each time the internal speakers fail?  I have used air to blow out the earphone jack but that didn't help either. One application (line up 2) correctly indicates when the earphone jack is used and when it is not in use.
Will be getting a call from apple tomorrow, I suspect that will need a new ipod touch 4g.

you've exhausted all of the troubleshooting steps then it really needs to be replaced if it's still within the warranty.

  • My sound switches from internal speakers to apple Tv and i dont have an apple tv device

I am having problems with sound. My speakers will switch from internal speakers to Apple TV for no reason when I am on a certain wifi network and ask for a password. I do not have an apple TV and in order for the sound to come out on the internal speakers i have to manually go into the preferences and switch back to internal speakers. This does this constantly while i am listening to music. Is there a way to shut off the feature so it will stay on internal speakers? This has happened ever since i made the upgrade to OS mountain lion. I never did this before. Thank you for your help.

Are you sure that WIFI network doesn't have an AppleTV on it?  Just because you don't own it doesn't mean there isn't one on that network.  The laptop or better said the OS cannot differentiate between an AppleTV that you own or not.  If it sees one on the network, it will show you one as being available.  The automatic reconnection is happening probably because the last time you streamed to an AppleTV, you didn't drop that connection before sleeping the computer or shutting down iTunes.
