Internal speakers won't mute when audio jack in use

I recently fixed my problem of no sound coming out of any speakers (by turning off Auto-Mute Mode in alsamixer), but now when I plug earphones into the audio jack my built-in speakers don't turn off. I am positive that the audio jack is working, as there is sound coming through the earphones, but sound is also coming through the built-in ones. I am confused because when I first got Arch installed, my earphones would work but not the main speakers. Then nothing worked, and now it won't stop coming through both of them! I will be sure to check back regularly to update you with any information needed.

  • Headphones Not Recognized When Plugged in, Internal Speakers Won't Mute

Hi all, I've scoured these message boards looking for a solution to this problem, but couldn't find a solution that worked.  Hopefully someone can!
    Toshiba Satellite C655-S5312
Edition: Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium (R) CPU B950@ 2.10GHZ
    Installed Memory: 4.00 GB
    System Type: 64-bit Operating System
The problem I'm having is that my computer won't recognize my headphones or any other external audio device when I plug them in. The internal speakers continue to play no matter what. I used the jack fine one night and the next morning it wasn't working. I've checked these external devices with other computers and they work fine.  My computer is just over a year old and no longer under warranty, but I can't imagine it being a hardware issue after such a short time of use.    I had this problem before right after I got my computer back from a repair shop.  Turns out the guy didn't reinstall my drivers.  Now, when I tried to follow those same steps, I'm getting nowhere.  I can say that I noticed that the available drivers on the Toshiba website have changed.  Before it was RealTek and now, after updates, it' was SmartAudioHD and now High Definition Audio Device.  I don't know if that bears any significance, but I thought I'd include that anyway.  I've tried uninstalling the driver, but everytime I restart my computer it's there under Audio Device Manager.  Tech Support said that my comp automatically adds the driver so I'll never really get rid of it.  Does that make sense?
    Troubleshooting steps so far:
1.) Uninstall and reinstall drivers (restarted my computer after)
2.)  Control Panel--->  Device Manager---> Sound, Video Games and Game Controllers---> High Definition Audio Device (was SmartAudio before updating driver during troubleshooting)---->right click and "Enable" is checked
3.)  Control Panel---> Sound---> Playback Tab (in Sound Dialog Box)---> Speakers (HDAD) green check mark but Headphones (HDAD) red downward arrow and "Not Plugged In" (Can enable or test because it's not detected)
Am I missing a driver?  Am I missing a vital step?  Please someone help me!

If you are using Windows 7, go into control panel click on sounds and make headphones default. When you are not using your headphones you will have to do this procedure again to restore speakers on the laptop or computer. I am using Microsoft Gaming Headphones and had to do this because my toshiba laptop did not recognize it was plugged into the USB port. I have no problems with the plain speaker headphones only the ones that plug into the usb port.

  • Satellite P745-S4217 - internal speakers don't mute when headphone or speaker plugged in

This didn't used to be the case.  Is there something I need to do to make the internal speakers mute when I am using headphone or external speakers?
    Thanks

You never did answer one of my questions.  Did your external speakers ever work and the internal speakers mute as they should?  If the answer is yes, do a System Restore back to a time when they worked properly. Type System Restore in the Start/Search box , hit Enter and follow instructions.  If the answer is no, do a System Reset as follows.  Turn off computer. Remove all attachments and battery. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.  Attach Power and insert battery.  Start computer and tap F2 at the Toshiba splash screen to get in BIOS.  Press F9 to setup system defaults. Answer Yes. Press F10 to Save Configuration Changes and Exit.  Answer Yes to complete the process.  The computer will restart.

  • Galaxy S3 doesn't connect to bluetooth when audio jack is in use

Here is my issue with my Galaxy S3.  My car has buil in bluetooth hands free.  The car stereo has an AUX input for music.  If I have a cable connecting the phone to the AUX jack for music I can not send/receive calls via the bluetooth.
I was able to do this seamlessly with my old Droid.  The music would mute and I could answer the phone with the steering wheel controls.
now I need to unhook the wire from the phones audio jack.  I see this as more than inconvienence but an actual safety issue.  Unpluging and repluging in wires while driving defeats the point of a "handsfree".
Is anyone else having the same issue?  have you found a work around?

I'm also having this problem. So are over 50 people to date, and I'm sure we're just the only ones who are active. http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/576056-can-not-use-bluetooth-when-audio-jack-plugged.html
Can this be fixed? This is extremely dangerous. I use my phone as an mp3 player and connect it through the audio jack in my car, and also want to use my bluetooth headset to make and receive calls. Instead the call comes through my speakers and there is no microphone, leaving me scrambling to unplug my audio cable while driving.
People say that the original firmware didn't have this problem. Samsung says it's Verizon, Verizon says its Samsung, I dont care who is liable as long as someone fixes it!
    Thanks

  • DV9720US - Speakers won't mute with headphones plugged in.

I am running XP instead of the Vista it came with. I have all the drivers but one work..(other devices> unknown device) with yellow !?  I can't use my headphones because speakers won't mute. Is this a hardware problem, or something electronic broken, like a metal tab inside that senses when headphones are plugged in? I'd really like to fix this because I use at school all day! Thanks ahead of time....Matt

Which sound driver are you using? Conexant or realtek?
Uninstall the current driver, try driver from XP downgrade guide, here

  • Satellite L670-1HJ -Internal Speakers are not muted when selecting line Out

I want to use an external set of speakers, but when plugging them in, selecting line out in Realtek HD Audio Manager doesn't turn off the internal speakers, instead only reducing their volume somewhat. Selecting Headphone does switch them off, but this results in audio being sent out at headphone levels, which sounds awful on normal speakers and is therefore not an option.
Is there a way I can either get it to switch them off when using line out too, or just disable the internal speakers altogether?

Unfortunately, in sound properties in can only deactivate either the HDMI output, or speakers, which switches both the internal and external ones on or off together, but doesn't let me choose between the two.
When selecting the headphone setting, the internal equalizer seems to switch to a different setting, which sounds very different and completely unnatural, so I'd prefer to find a way to use the much better sounding line out with disabled internal speakers.

  • Internal speakers will not play, only audio choice is "digital out".

15 inch MacBook Pro.  Internal speakers will not play.  Output to headphone plug did work.  Now I cannot insert headphones into socket, it seems to be too shallow.  There is no red glow as mentioned in other posts.  I had the red glow issue on an older MacBook and resolved it by inserting toothpick into socket and triggered switch.  I have used command, option, r and p reset.  Ideas?

That is what I thought as well.  I am not able to check the same headphone jack I was using earlier today, but other 3.5 mil jacks dont fit.  I will try again with the same one used earlier.
Would this also cause my internal speakers to not be recognized?  I had a issue similar to this with my old macbook and was able to resolve it by flipping a switch in the output socket.  Something to try?  I would also assume that a bent contact or switch is not something an average joe could fix.
    Thanks for your quick responses.

  • Internal speakers won't stay muted

Help! Can anyone provide a clue why the internal speakers on my 20" iMac are turning themselves back on whenever I restart my system, even after I muted them prior to the last shutdown?
Whenever it happens, I get a fairly thunderous startup chime. Plus, the chime is coming from the internal speakers even though I have a set of external speakers plugged into the iMac.
Any suggestions or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, after the last update did you Repair Permissions? (usually it's a good idea to RP before & after updates) after RP I would reboot then reset your Sounds to your requirements. Also try resetting the Midi settings...L

  • Internal mic won't record when headphone is in the audio jack

I've tried toggling the monitor on and off and plugging and unplugging the headphones. I just want to be able to record a track and then layer vocals on top while listening to the first track through headphones. But when I attempt this it seems as though the internal mic becomes disengaged? PLEASE HELP! I just got this new mac a week ago.

Garageband > Preferences > Audio/Midi and choose built in mic as input.

  • No sound from internal speakers, red glowing light in headphone jack

Okay. Have seen a few posts on this topic, but scattered symptoms, resolutions and ideas. Here is my timeline and plan:
My speakers went out spontaneously running 10.4.5 when I switched to battery power. We had a blackout here in L.A. and I was trying to play a DVD for the kids- no internal speaker sound.
    * There is a red light glowing from the headphone jack. Never noticed this before, it seems to be a sign associated with the problem.
    * External speakers/headphones work fine.
    * Absolutely no sound from any app, alert or startup unless something (speakers/headphones)external is plugged in.
    * if nothing is plugged in, the slider volume control in the menu bar is greyed out at full volume. Sound pref panel only shows "digital out" as choice, but is greyed out. "Built-in speakers" is absent as a choice.
    What I've tried:
Select/deselect "look for spekaers" option in iTunes.
    Update to 10.4.7
Update all listed apps to latest in Software update (iTunes, QT, etc.)
    Trash sound prefs
    Zap PRAM
    Clean install from OEM DVD
Restore System from previous backup (although last backup may have been corrupt because I may not have noticed the problem for a while.)
    That's about it.
My plan: Take PB to genius bar today and see what they say.
I'll report back what they say.

I have had the same syptoms as the above people in my PowerBook and was hating life without sound. i got to thinking about what earlier people had posted and concluded it could not be a software problem, that it had to be a hardware problem. I thought, maybe the headphone jack was just dirty, you know, plugging headphones/speakers in and out of the computer many times, it could have just gotten dirty. If I just clean it with rubbing alcohol, maybe that will do the trick. It did! I have been going two days and am doing great!
    THE BOTTOMLINE!
Clean the headphone jack out! I used a q-tip and rubbing alcohol. (I have found that making my own q-tip with a toothpick and a small amount of cotton works better because it is thinner than the stick for a q-tip. Just twist the cotton to the edge of the toothpick.)
For all you people out there who try this and it works for you post for other people so they can be more confident that it does work.

  • Speakers won't mute with Headpho

This is for an Audigy 4-pro. When the headphones are plugged in, the speakers still function. I've turned on the option to mute the speakers when the headphones are plugged in. That doesn't seem to make any difference. Am I doing something wrong? Should I reinstall my drivers? Or is there another tweak I need to make?
    Thanks.
    Sam

I think I would rather just turn off my speakers manually every time I plugged in my headphones. This was not at all a constructi've response.

  • Internal hdd won´t sleep, when booting from firewire. How to spindown?

    Hi,
when I boot my powerbook from an external firewire drive, the internal hard drive does not spindown, no matter, what the disk sleep setting is. I tried pmset and the SpindownHD tool, provided by Apple´s CHUD, but the internal drive remains active, all the time. I can also unmount the internal drive, but no matter what I do, it won´t sleep.
    Any advice? Thanks.

I ended up re-installing Yosemite 10.10.2 on both drives, and things are (so far) back to normal. I'll be back again if I have this problem recur.

  • Internal speakers won't play

I can hear sounds and music when I have my headphones in, but whem I take them ut no sound comes. I have a 2nd generation and there should be an internal speaker.
I also got mine refurbished. Do I have to reset it, or turn something on?
    Thanks!

Adjust the volume without the headphones attached and see if it says headphones, shown here.

  • Sound won't mute when I mute on TV@nywhere

I have a TV@nywhere Master, and for some reason when I mute my computer's sound, the TV doesn't mute.  So I click "mute" on the WinDVR program and the Captions pop up like they're supposed to but the sound is STILL there.
    Any thoughts?

    Fixed it!
i had two inputs, and both played sound but the other one could be controlled.  dunno exactly why, but it worked.  the card's sound was attached externally into the soundcard, so you know.
