Internal speakers won't stay muted

Help! Can anyone provide a clue why the internal speakers on my 20" iMac are turning themselves back on whenever I restart my system, even after I muted them prior to the last shutdown?
Whenever it happens, I get a fairly thunderous startup chime. Plus, the chime is coming from the internal speakers even though I have a set of external speakers plugged into the iMac.
Any suggestions or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, after the last update did you Repair Permissions? (usually it's a good idea to RP before & after updates) after RP I would reboot then reset your Sounds to your requirements. Also try resetting the Midi settings...L

  • Headphones Not Recognized When Plugged in, Internal Speakers Won't Mute

Hi all, I've scoured these message boards looking for a solution to this problem, but couldn't find a solution that worked.  Hopefully someone can!
    Toshiba Satellite C655-S5312
Edition: Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium (R) CPU B950@ 2.10GHZ
    Installed Memory: 4.00 GB
    System Type: 64-bit Operating System
The problem I'm having is that my computer won't recognize my headphones or any other external audio device when I plug them in. The internal speakers continue to play no matter what. I used the jack fine one night and the next morning it wasn't working. I've checked these external devices with other computers and they work fine.  My computer is just over a year old and no longer under warranty, but I can't imagine it being a hardware issue after such a short time of use.    I had this problem before right after I got my computer back from a repair shop.  Turns out the guy didn't reinstall my drivers.  Now, when I tried to follow those same steps, I'm getting nowhere.  I can say that I noticed that the available drivers on the Toshiba website have changed.  Before it was RealTek and now, after updates, it' was SmartAudioHD and now High Definition Audio Device.  I don't know if that bears any significance, but I thought I'd include that anyway.  I've tried uninstalling the driver, but everytime I restart my computer it's there under Audio Device Manager.  Tech Support said that my comp automatically adds the driver so I'll never really get rid of it.  Does that make sense?
    Troubleshooting steps so far:
1.) Uninstall and reinstall drivers (restarted my computer after)
2.)  Control Panel--->  Device Manager---> Sound, Video Games and Game Controllers---> High Definition Audio Device (was SmartAudio before updating driver during troubleshooting)---->right click and "Enable" is checked
3.)  Control Panel---> Sound---> Playback Tab (in Sound Dialog Box)---> Speakers (HDAD) green check mark but Headphones (HDAD) red downward arrow and "Not Plugged In" (Can enable or test because it's not detected)
Am I missing a driver?  Am I missing a vital step?  Please someone help me!
    Solved!

If you are using Windows 7, go into control panel click on sounds and make headphones default. When you are not using your headphones you will have to do this procedure again to restore speakers on the laptop or computer. I am using Microsoft Gaming Headphones and had to do this because my toshiba laptop did not recognize it was plugged into the USB port. I have no problems with the plain speaker headphones only the ones that plug into the usb port.

  • HP pavilion dv7 microphone won't stay muted on reboot

I have a HP Pavilion DV7 P/N-A1L97AV with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  I am having a problem with both the integrated microphone array and external microphone not staying muted when I reboot the computer.  I can mute system sounds and reboot that is still muted when I reboot, but not the microphones.  The only way to keep them muted is to mute all.  The reason this is a problem is that when I reboot, if I forgot to turn sound down I get feedback until I can mute the microphone.  I have not been able to figure out what has caused this but it is quite annoying, especially since I use the laptop with events for playback.  I do use the microphone for recording classes forweb-based classroom for elementary schools so I need it operational.

Have you tried starting it without battery?
    Have you reseated memory.
Try removing 1 stick of memory and see if it will start. If no joy, switch the memory sticks and try the other one.

  • Internal speakers won't mute when audio jack in use

I recently fixed my problem of no sound coming out of any speakers (by turning off Auto-Mute Mode in alsamixer), but now when I plug earphones into the audio jack my built-in speakers don't turn off. I am positive that the audio jack is working, as there is sound coming through the earphones, but sound is also coming through the built-in ones. I am confused because when I first got Arch installed, my earphones would work but not the main speakers. Then nothing worked, and now it won't stop coming through both of them! I will be sure to check back regularly to update you with any information needed.

  • Internal speakers won't play

I can hear sounds and music when I have my headphones in, but whem I take them ut no sound comes. I have a 2nd generation and there should be an internal speaker.
I also got mine refurbished. Do I have to reset it, or turn something on?
    Thanks!

Adjust the volume without the headphones attached and see if it says headphones, shown here.

  • Internal Drive won't stay open

When I double click on the internal drive icon on the desktop, the window opens and then immediately closes. Similarly, when I double click on an alias for a folder in the internal drive, the window opens and immediately closes.
I have run Disk Utility, which reported no repairs. I have repaired disk permissions using Disk Utility.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Jim

    Thanks for the suggestions.
After deleting the suggested preference files I'm still having the same problem, now with one slight change.
When I double click on the internal drive icon, the drive window still opens and immediately closes. But instead of leaving me on the desktop, I'm now automatically in the "desktop window" with the "house" icon and my (acct?) name selected. It's the icon in the list on the left side that's between "desktop" and " documents."
Additionally, the "Applications" window is now also open behind this window.
I tried using disk utility to repair the permissions on the drive, but that didn't fix the problem.
    I'd appreciate any further suggestions.

  • Blue Yeti microphone being activated by OS - won't stay muted!

I upgraded to Yosemite last night and I love it but for one very annoying bug: I use a Blue Yeti USB microphone as my input device, but since it has such an active diaphragm I keep it muted using the front mute button (turning the input to zero doesn't quite do it) to prevent feedback. Since upgrading, there are a huge number of applications that "un-mute" the mic without my input. Anything, it seems, that might potentially use a microphone activates it. As a result, if I have music playing I will suddenly have the mic feeding back without my consent - very annoying! Is there a fix to this? Any ideas?

It seems that any time a system sound of any kind is played it trips the mute switch. Very annoying.

  • International languages won't stay.

Hey all! I have this weird problem that isn't harmful, but has been bugging me. In my International preferences-->Input Menu, I have British and Chinese (simplified) enabled, but no US. Whenever I reboot the Mac, it will always revert to US, which is quite irritating. Any ideas? TIA!

You could try running the language chooser again by opening Terminal and typing:
    sudo "/System/Library/CoreServices/Language Chooser.app/Contents/MacOS/Language Chooser"

  • Ipod touch internal speakers don't work

My ipod touch internal speakers won't play; I get alternative selections as to where to send sound (headphones, docking station, AppleTV, etc) but not internal speakers.  I've hard and soft reset but no improvement.  I keep wondering if there is a setting I've overlooked.

Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for $199 for 64 GB one and $99 for the other 4Gs. They do not fix yours.

  • HELP! Two problems - internal speakers and a bar that won't go away!

I have just bought my new 3G iPod Touch, but now the internal speakers don't work. I haven't done anything, but suddenly after I had had the headphones in and used external speakers, it won't play out loud without the headphones or speakers attached. The volume bar is completely gone, when I take out the headphones, and there were no problems before.
Also, in the "now playing"-page I somehow made a bar come up that shows elapsed time, repeat, Genius and shuffle, but now I can't make it go away since I have no clue how I made come up in the first place. It wasn't there from the beginning, so hopefully somebody can tell me how to get rid of it again? Or I would rather just know how to turn it on and off as it probably can be useful.

Type command + option + esc (all three keys together).
You will see a new pane called Force Quit Applications. In that pane select, one at a time, anything you do not recognize, and click Force Quit.
    Finally, select Finder and Relaunch.

  • MacBook Pro won't automatically switch between internal speakers and display audio

I have a MacBook Pro that connects to a LED Cinema display.  It used to automatically switch between internal speakers and display audio when plugged in to the display but won't anymore.  I have to manually change it in System Preferences --> Sound. Does anyone know how to make it do that again?
    thanks,
    Ben

I just want to add, I have the same problem, and just want to help raise awareness of it.
1st, the problem only started recently (have been using the Thunderbolt display since it was released), I did not have this problem, and noticed it beginning only in the last month. (since January)
2nd, My particular setup, includes a hard drive attached to the firewire port on the back of the Thunderbolt Display (so, I am wondering if anyone else experienced this problem with a firewire drive being connected).
         My full setup:
              Macbook Air (2011)
             Thunderbolt display
Western Digital drive (attached to firewire of display)
3rd, If I go into settings, what I will see is the "Display Audio" is selected (but no sound coming out),
If I then select "Internal Speakers," a buffered "history" of all the sounds I did not hear is then played (pretty funny actually) - for  example, if I sent mail, adjusted the volume, and started playing a song.... it immediately plays all those sounds when selecting "Internal Speakers"
4th, If i then select "Display Audio" - it does nothing
5th, what I have to do, to resolve this is:  eject all my hard drives,  disconnect the thunderbolt cable, then reconnect the thunderbolt cable, and everything works as normal.

  • MacBook Pro internal speakers disappeared and keyboard won't light up

yesterday I realized my internal speakers were not working on my MacBook Pro. The red light comes off in the headphone jack. I tried to plug my headphones and take them out to get my computer to recognize the internal speaker but nothing seems to be working. i was using mountain lion so I decided to install yosemite to see if that would fix my problem but it did not. In fact this morning after Yosemite was installed I noticed that my keyboard lights were also "locked" just like my speakers. I tried the PRAM reboot and the sudo terminal code but none of these have worked so far... Any ideas of what I could do?
I Would like to specify that in my preferences for sound nothing is muted not is the wrong device selected, there are no devices available as if my internal speakers had disapeared

    1. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.
Make sure that CH1 and CH2 volume sliders are at the middle and matched.
    2. System Preferences > Sound> Sound Effects
        Play sound effects through:
Select "Internal speakers" and then back to "Selected sound output device".
If this does not help, you have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
    Best.

  • Airplay won't stop trying to connect and internal speakers don't work

Yesterday I was listening to music (not iTunes) through my headphones when all of a sudden the sound stopped working.  At the same time, a window popped up asking me to enter the Airplay password of a device I did not recognize (I was in a public location).  Any time I tried to adjust the sound, the same Airplay window would pop up.  I thought when I went home the problem would be fixed because I would no longer be in range of the Airplay device, but I still do not have any sound through headphones or the internal speakers.  I don't even get the startup sound when the computer turns on.  I have tried plugging and unplugging my headphones several times to reset that sensor, but nothing changed.  There is no red light by the headphone input, and when I go into settings there is no external output option (see picture). Also, whenever I press any of the volume buttons on my keyboard, I get the the second image.  I have restarted my computer, and searched everywhere for solutions, I have seen a few other people with the same problem but so far no solutions.  I have a 2011 MacBook Pro and am running OS X 10.9.5

  • Satellite L670-1HJ -Internal Speakers are not muted when selecting line Out

I want to use an external set of speakers, but when plugging them in, selecting line out in Realtek HD Audio Manager doesn't turn off the internal speakers, instead only reducing their volume somewhat. Selecting Headphone does switch them off, but this results in audio being sent out at headphone levels, which sounds awful on normal speakers and is therefore not an option.
Is there a way I can either get it to switch them off when using line out too, or just disable the internal speakers altogether?

Unfortunately, in sound properties in can only deactivate either the HDMI output, or speakers, which switches both the internal and external ones on or off together, but doesn't let me choose between the two.
When selecting the headphone setting, the internal equalizer seems to switch to a different setting, which sounds very different and completely unnatural, so I'd prefer to find a way to use the much better sounding line out with disabled internal speakers.

  • Sound 'out' is reset to "Internal speakers" after any restart.

I'd prefer it would stay assigned to "line out" but this won't happen.  Has anyone experience with this mystery?

Sound out reverts to internal speakers at every shut down
Sound output reverting to internal speakers after restart
