International AppleCare Support

Hello everyone, I am in serious need of advice/support (and not trying to denigrate apple in any way, so please do not censor my post). I am currently traveling in Cambodia for an extended period of time, in need of computer repair and have no means of directly reaching anyone from apple because there is no callback service to my location, even though I am a paying applecare subscriber. If anyone can help or provide suggestions, I would sincerely appreciate it!
Anyway, this is my story and I will *try* to keep it short, even though it' not an easy task . Basically, This is my 4th macbook, I've always been happy in the past and have found your computers reliable and worth the extra price, so you could say that I was a hardcore apple fan. Unfortunately, I now believe that the computer purchase I have purchased is a lemon. So if you'll bear with me for a couple of minutes, this is my sad computer's story which I post on the apple community, not knowing where else to post it and as I believe it contains important information for other travellers such as myself:
- I travel a lot, and tend to buy new computers with each travel as they get lighter. I am usually happy with them, so applecare seemed like a good and logical idea despite the price.
- Very early on, the USB port broke on the new computer, but the logic board was replaced quickly and at no charge.OK, it happens!
- A weeks later, the delete key was not working properly, so the logic board was replaced again (???) and keyboard as well. This repair took longer and I had to borrow a friend's computer, but OK, I was confident it would not happen again.
- I then travelled for a month and the cruellest things possible happened: my hard drive died, making it impossible to finish some of the work I was doing. Luckily, I had backed up most of my data, but still lost a lot of information, work and time. Back home, the apples store replaced the drive after a couple of days, so I was pretty much back to square one. My enthusiasm had gone down, but I was still confident that this was the right computer for me and willing to take it with me to Asia. I figured I had been through enough bad luck anyway!
- So that's the background which occurred in the few months before I started to traveland I now come the current traveling. During my flight from China to Phnom Pehn, the screen on my computer cracked after going an airport security check. I am not 100% sure what happened as I was going through the screening process, and I am the first to admit that it is hard to blame apple for a screen that mysteriously broke, but still it seems extremely odd (and even dangerous)  that a screen would break (about 80% of the surface is cracked) even if a bag was placed over the laptop and even if it contained bricks.. I also know from looking at the x-raymachine to check on the computer that it was NOT dropped. Some pressure does seem to have been applied to it though, but I till find it hard to believe that this would have cracked the screen. Anyway, I am not a professional so I will stop making theories, but how does one prove any such thing when no one is there to help or answer questions?
I should mention that I am aways super careful, carry the computer it in a separate case and never cram in between a bunch of stuff. Anyway, without trying to be a bore, this is not my first plane ride but this is my first serious screen problem issue which leads me to believe that the screen was previously flawed.
- Once I finally got to Asia, I was naturally shocked to see the problem and wanted to address the issue. Apparently however, Cambodia is not listed in the applecare page so there is no direct way to contact anyone from Apple here, something I was not told at time of purchase. After online searches, I discovered some far away obscure shops ran by uncaring people in areas you kind of have to find yourself without knowing if Apple will void your warranty or not. Not sure what to do, I decided to go to one of those 'authorized' addresses which I found on line (and spent one ENTIRE day looking for a shop). I got there, was told it was the wrong shop and to go further down the same street. Ok. Go further, find store with same name and am told the exact same think by giggling employees. I smile and try to remain calm, it is Cambodia afer all, different rules,
Finally reach third store, guy opens computer up (without powering it on to see of it works or not--it does), says 'not our problem since glass is broken and not covered by apple'. Then adding, "Deal with apple if not happy. They will give you a service number and we can fix for free. Well, this pretty much summed up our conversations . Basically, this was a repair store where talking was not a possibility, regardless of the problem.
For anyone who has been to Phnom Pehn, I should mention that this occurred after several hours of online searches, motorbike bargaining/driving/praying getting lost and lots of honking. Once again, this is not apple store, but I'm merely pointing out the difference between finding mysterious places with no support and going into an aircon applestore. I then asked the pleasant man at the store how much it would cost f I paid out of pocket for the fix as I need my computer for work and can not spend weeks trying to resolve this issues. He said 570$ if I wanted to kept the broken screen glass (!!!) and about 400$ if I did not. These numbers seemed to be estimates and simply pop out of his head and I am still trying to figure that one out. Does apple reuse glass parts when fixing computer? What exactly does one do with over 100$ of broken glass? Please excuse de digression.
- trying not to despair, I later literally spent hours trying to deal with apple care, but their site offers no direct email, chat possibility or ayway to return calls to Cambodia.Very frustrating and extremely time-consuming.
-  As a last resort, I finallly decided to just throw money out the window and run and call Canada service directly which I should have done in the first place (this is where I bought the computer originally). I was transferred to several places, and ended up talking with super friendly guy named Andrew who gave me another possble Cambodian address where it may be possible to address the issue. It was also hard to find and we got lost several times, but eventually found it.
Unfortunately, the place turned out to be worse than the original one and the guy did not want to bother looking at the problem or any possible cause. Basically, unlike in an apple store, Cambodian employees can say whatever they want when its time to sell a product, but if it breaks down or if you need support, tough luck! The most incredible part though was that when I mentioned that the caps lock key did not light up and that the mousepad was not responding as well as before, iso could he please examine those parts, he added once more that this was not his problem and that I should call apple for a repair number!!! So basically, if I understand correctly, Apple (and AppleCare) will not fix either the top part of a computer screen (glass and screen) NOR the keyboard which is a one piece unit. This leads me to the purpose of the overly long message which is: WHAT EXACTLY IS APPLE CARE FOR? It is just for talking to people on the phone or do the actually do anything?
As a last alternative, I tried calling Andrew from Canada for advice again, but did not get a call back (in fairness, Andrew had informed me that they are not allowed to make international calls and that all his calls for directly to voice mail, so how does one handle such a situation? I cannot reach him and he will not call me).
What do I do? Who do I call? How do I not void the warranty? Should I just demand an applecare refund and toss the computer I have?
Thanks for any help/suggestions
Damien
P.S. I have also experienced several other minor problems, but will stick to the major issues for now.

Hey there
im afraid i dont know about the second two questions
but concerning the country of residence:
they urge you to buy the plan from your country of residence as they say that by doing this you can get the full experience of the plan, (meaning there will be things you cannot do with the plan if you buy it from a different country) however you can if you want buy it from any country you like and youll be able to cover the computer...after all is does include global coverage. To be honest i would recommend you just buy it in your country of residence, i think youll find this will make things much easier if there may be anything wrong with the computer in the future...
Hope this helps,

Anyone have suggestions on how to go beyond AppleCare support for a solution. MacBook has been sent to Apple 3 times. Each time they replace HD install OSX. It returns and works for about a day and then apps start falling off and eventually the OS won't boot. Hired a technician (4.5 hours) who erased HD (zero data) and tried to install OSX from original disk, then tried Tiger install, then Leopard install. All got through about 1/3 of the install process and than failed. No working MacBook since Sept 28. Been the "product specialist" route, spent hours on the phone. All they will only do is attempt repairs on a computer that has been labled defective. What is the next step to getting a computer that works? How do I get out of this mess? Anyone know some other means of getting Apple's best to solve this porblem. One AppleCare techie said that the computer must have been sitting too close to a fan, magnet or TV none of which are in the area exceppt for the magnet that keeps the power plug attached. Silly guessing on his part. Help!

    Apple Customer Relations can't help.
She sent me back to tech support and said to ask for a manager which is what we've been doing since September! Strange, no one at Apple can solve this problem and they won't replace the lemon!
I wonder how Steve Jobs (if he was just a regular old user) would handle not being able to use his computer for 47 days why he waits for dozens of people to decide if they can or will fix it.
    just venting . . .

    Hello:
Has anyone been able to setup international address support in I-Supplier Portal ?
When supplier enters address, it asks for County and then there is no validation at state, city, zip code level.
So Supplier can enter: County: United States .... and then State, City, Zip codes are all free-form text fields ...
Any ideas how to get validation for these fields ..

2 summers ago, I was live-in caregiver for my Dad & Mom. I am watchin TV in the back room and before I know what's happening, my poor folks had given some gypsies $100 cash to 'clean' the outside  of their gutters! The hook those f****** used was elegantly simple. They had gone into HomeDepot, grabbed a handful of Behr Product brochures and were saying they were using this stuff to clean with at $60/gallon! Turns out the product was really $6 (SIX) /gallon!! They were just about to get a check for $600 from my Mom (had it written about to sign and hand it over) when I wandered out to the front and saw the commotion. I immediately put a stop to it. Papa Gypsy started to get in my face & fight before his kinsmen grabbed him and dragged him off as I was calling 911.
Moral... trust NO-ONE - in any form of media - no matter how slick the deal looks. My poor OLD folks still  don't realize what happened. They think *I* was the a******!
All your scammer had to do was parrot Applese, design with alot of white space, put real looking footers and such. The tell to me for sure was "Call Apple" with NO NUMBER (I didn't think you intentionally edited that out)
Glad you posted and I was able to help. Maybe Apple will sick their goons on 'em I'd have goons if I was rich and powerful wouldn't you?

  • Internal TV Support FX5900 VTD-128

I have a MSI FX5900 VTD-128 and I am trying to figure out the TV support.
What is meant by "Internal TV support"?
Does this enable a cable connection or aerial to be connected?
What does the channel control do if it does not?
    Iss additional hardware needed?
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but the manual says nothing.

Ive plugged a coax cable in from the Cable box.  so wheres the picture.  tell me what you have to do what programs etc..., Becuase the TV is grayed out in the media centre.

  • AppleCare support - how many times will you lose my registration?

Called on 6/29/06 to register my almost out of warranty iPod. Waited forever to talk to a very nice person who took my case and told me what to do: fax my iPod SN, and provided a case#.
I call today to register my AppleCare warranty and am told that I need to repeat the above steps again, and call back in 5-10 business days.
This person (Shelly?) was rude, abrupt and condencending.
How many times do I have to prove that I own an iPod, get it registered so I can get it repaired?
AppleCare is the worst experience I've ever had. What did I pay for. I've never experienced such a run-around to get support.
BTW - your phone queue is about 20 years old. Could you at least tell someone HOW LONG they are going to wait? And/or eliminate the 'You call is important and will be answered in the order received' notice that comes on every minute?

This is a user-to-user forum. You are not communicating with Apple.

  • International Chars Support in nio

    Hello Gurus
After making our server scalable, we are now ready to deploy it world wide. I have a question regarding encoding/decoding international characters.
We want the server to support any many languages as possible. Presently, I check to decode the bytebuffer using few constant (English based ) charsets. If unsuccessful, I try to find all the charsets on the machine and then decode it one by one till it decodes successfully. For texts with French characters, after I call toString on the charBuffer, all the English characters are stripped off leaving only French Characters(weird chars not found in Engligh but only in French). Let me know how to proceed. Any help would be very appreciated.

    double post.
NIO supports the same encoding as Blocking IO

  • International Applecare Question

Hey guys. So, my iPod Shuffle stopped responding two weeks before I'm about to fly back to Canada after a year abroad in the UK. I'm thinking about getting a Nano, and I know that I want to buy the Applecare, since, as much as I love Apple products, they do have a tendency to break a lot.
But if I buy the iPod in the UK, does that mean I have to buy Applecare in the UK as well? Or can I buy my iPod in the UK and the Applecare in Canada? If I have to buy the Applecare in the UK, what does that mean in terms of my coverage for Canada?
    Thanks!

    2. Does this still only work via Wi-Fi?
    3. Can you use foriegn service (i.e. Vodaphone in Germany) providers without acurring international fees?
    4.  If said person abroad calls a cellphone in the USA will the receiver be charged? From what I have read this depends on the country. So does USA charge you for recieving a foriegn Skype call? I have read that only the caller is charged, but I wanted to get a confirmation on this.
    5. Can a call from a Skype account abroad call a landline without the landline being incorperated into Skype connect?
Hello and welcome to the Skype Community.
With Skype there are no international calls. All calls are local worldwide irrespective of origin or destination.
    1. Yes. You can call worldwide using credit and there are no additional costs.
    2. No. It works without wifi
    3.  A Skype call from anywhere travels via the internet and only breaks to PSTN or a cellular network at a point close to the recipient's phone or device.
    4. Some call recipients may be charged and some will not. It depends upon their plan but, even if some are charged, the amount would only be a few cents. The cellphone carrier will see the call as local [3. above].
    5. Yes.

  • International Character Support?

    Hi
The message I sent out for a share invitation included
umlauts (Für das Meeting heute); it arrived as "Fr das
Meeting heute" in Entourage on a Mac.

The current version of the Share service does not yet support
international character sets. We are adding support for this in
Share currently and will provide more information about supported
languages and locales as we come closer to releasing a new
    version.

  • International SmartNet Support

Not sure if this is in the right forum...
I'm in the process of working with our Cisco VAR to purchase some gear for a collection of International sites outside the US (Canada, Australia, UK, Netherlands). I want 24x7x4 support but I want to make sure the support is bought for the appropriate country. The quote the VAR has sent me has the same part number as support I would buy for inside the US, however the price is higher. Are there specific SN part numbers for each region or otherwise what is the process for registering the SN coverage in the appropriate country. I trust my VAR is doing the right thing, I just want to understand the process myself.
    Thanks in advance.

It really isn't possible to confidently work out the character encoding of an incoming byte stream from the bytes sent. Different encodings may give different, but equally valid characters for the same bytes.
Are we talking a web service here? If so then the encoding a browser returns on a form is the same as the one you send the form in. Don't use new String(bytes, encoding) for this, use HttpServletRequest.setCharacterEncoding(). For internationalised web sites, best to use UTF-8 for your pages.

  • I can"t open the apple hardware test from the applecare support website

i received the applecare training program for my birthday and while exploring the applecare service source website i found a image file of the apple hardware test (AHT) for each model along with a pdf of the service manual and a pdf of the AHT service codes. The problem i'm having is, i cant open the image of the AHT.

After downloading that image, open it and it will show up mounted in your desktop. Then, open Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities), right-click your Apple Hardware Test image in the sidebar and burn it to a DVD. Finally, start your computer from the disc, holding the C key, so Apple Hardware Test should start, always that you have the correct version for your computer.
You have Apple Hardware Test in the Applications disc that came with the computer. In that case, hold the D key while your computer is starting

  • International Fonts Support

I have installed JDeveloper 3.0 on a Win2000 Proffesional edition with Arabic Language support.
However when I try to design a form in JDeveloper IDE and use Arabic characters, which is supported by the JDK according to the documentation, as labels or in text fields from the database I get strange symbols displayed on the form but proper text in the source code.
Can anybody tell me how I can get proper arabic characters displayed on the form?

    Rasheed,
Some of the problems you are seeing may be due to the fact that JDeveloper 3.0 is only certified on Windows NT.
Labels and buttons should work. Text fields are not supported until JDK 1.3.
You mention 'strange symbols'. The cause of the problem depends on what these 'strange symbols' are:
a small square indicates a problem with the fonts
a question mark ? indicates a character set conversion problem
latin-looking characters (o's with umlats, etc.) are probably due to JDeveloper running on the wrong operating system
I would check out the Javasoft website for more information (www.javasoft.com). They have tutorials for internationalization, and the specs for the specific versions will tell you what is supported.
