International Travel Using Public WiFi and U.S. On...

I just installed Skype to use at public wifi's on a South America trip.  I bought Skype credits, plan to use pay as you go, and set up a U.S online number.  When I am in Ecuador as an example, I want to make calls to landlines back to the U.S., to other landlines and cells within country (Ecuador), and from Ecuador to landlines or cells in other South American countries.
Will my setup work for this?  Will the rates be as if I'm in the U.S, and calling from the U.S. to Ecuador or the other countries?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

It doesn't matter which country you are calling from. The rates are based on the country you are calling to, so for example the rates for calling to US are the same no matter where from the world you are calling.
There are currently some promotional rates for our users in US and Canada for making international calls, these rates are available only in US or Canada, but generally it does not matter which country you are located in.
You can check the rates on the following page:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/payg-rates/
Simply enter the country you want to call to, and the rates will be displayed.

I will be using public wifi for 3 months while traveling, do I need VPN software? And is it needed at the receiving end?

As long as you only enter your password in secure web forms, connect to secure mail servers, and don't mind if a stranger is watching which Internet servers you connect to (but can't see what you do with them), a VPN isn't necessary.

Face time with wifi only.  I have a 4Gs iPhone traveling to Japan.  Can I use face time with another 4Gs or IMacback in the States using just wifi and with I have my Celluar Data and Data Roaming off?

Thanks,  After changing my settings in face time per your suggestion, (it needed to be done),  I turned off cellular data and data roaming and made a call using face time.  It worked!  Great way to stay in touch while overseas without the need for those egregious phone data plans.

  • Can I use both Wifi and a Lan connection at the same time?

With me back in the dorms I have been limited to a slower connection than what I would like. Now we are able to use both Wifi and a Lan line so I was wondering to somewhat "double" my speed if there was any way to use both connections at the same time.
Now I know that you can have both plugged in at the same time, I guess what I'm asking is, is there a way that I could set programs to use one or the other? Or some kind of virtual desktop that is set to use the other connection or anything that would allow both be used at the same time.
Or am I just wishing for something that doesn't have any possible way to work?

You can use both at the same time, but not gor Internet access if that's what you're asking.
Now there is a thing called Link Aggregation, which combines a number of interfaces for speed/redundancy, but it really only works locally, and then only with ALL special equipment in the route, and most likely OSX Server involved.
    Sorry.

  • Can too much memory lead to a kernel panic on a MacBook Pro? specs 2.4GHz intel core i7 16GB DDR3 RAM   late2011..My laptop began suffering from kernel panics 3 mos ago first noticed using public wifi. Gone thru apple support all the way to engineers

Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night  attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card.  The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit.  I would describe my use as "light"  based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support  and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted  3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix  graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue  given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble.  Does that make sense?  Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge.  Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

The RAM needs specs as shown below.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

  • Ipad when using public wifi

Is there any way to protect an ipad when using public wifi

Don't send any sensitive information over unsecured WiFi. This would include banking details, credit card numbers and the like.

  • Since using public wifi cannot send email

    Hi.
I used a college public wifi today, I noted I could not send email which is not unusual perhaps they do not have ssl or whatever on the public.
Anyhow I have got home and I still cannot send emails. I have restarted the mac and mail etc but all four email accounts will not send email.
Its not my home network, my wife can send from the same LAN no problems.
    Any ideas?

Perhaps start with the really simple stuff like read what I wrote
For what ever reason it seems to have righted it self so this is fixed!

  • Nokia c3- using only wifi and no GPRS / EDGE

Is there a way to use only WiFi for internet / OVI store / Community connections always? And Never use GPRS / EDGE at all?
(i.e) Is ther a way to disable GPRS and EDGE without affecting WiFi in Nokia C3-00?

please tell me how to use only wifi in c3-00 not any gprs pack.
    Try the following steps:
You can set the WLAN or Wi-Fi to the highest priority so it will not connect to GPRS. To do this, go to Menu > Settings > Connectivity > WLAN > Saved WLANs > Select which WLAN that you want to connect > Options > Organise priority.
Once done, set the packet data connection to when needed. This settings will establish a packet data connection when needed by an application. The connection is closed when the application is closed. You can set that by going to Menu > Settings > Connectivity > Packet data > Packet data connection > When needed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Is there a firewall in iOS8 when using public WiFi?

If I am not able to use cell connections because I am out of range, but there is a public WiFi, I want to know my phone can't be seen by anyone I don't want to see it. Is there a firewall or something similar in iOS8 to cloak the phone as there is in OS10?

    KnowledgeHunter wrote:
So what I'm hearing is that if I haven't jailbroke my phone, I should be OK on public WiFi's?
The danger in public, unsecured WiFi networks is not that people will be able to see the contents of our device. The danger lies in sending sensitive information over that network. Don't do your online banking, for example, over an unsecured, untrusted network.

  • International travel to South Africa and iPad charging

I am traveling to South Africa and will need to charge my iPad. The camps I will be traveling to have generator power at times...I have the charging kit for international adaptors, will that work or will the generator power fry my iPad? I just want to make sure I burn up my machine.

And there is no need to buy the Apple cable to plug in to the SA sockets, or even an expensive travel adaptor. Search around in the travel shops and electrical shops (and in Australia the AA travel sections) and c$3 or equivalent gets you a simple and unobtrusive adaptor - some travel adaptors are pretty big. This will work round the world and keeps your costs down for the important things, beer and pizza. It also seems that buying them at home before you leave costs you more, but finding them abroad is a little trickier. For me, UK to US, Canada, Singapore, round Europe and Oz it worked fine.

  • Using both WiFi and GPRS (not at the same time!)

When at home I want my E71 to use the WiFi, probably also when available in hotels etc. but otherwise I want to use the GPRS data conenction. There doesn't seem to be any easy way to set things up so that the E71 uses the 'best' connection.
Am I missing something or do I always have to select the connection method manually?

Your not missing anything, its not there. If you want to change the connection an application uses you need to do it manually each time.
The other option is to load an application such as this one.

  • HT1937 I am from the United States and am currently in The Netherlands, then traveling to the UK. I activated my iPhone 4S for international travel using the *288 number, however it is telling me that I have no service.

I also tried resetting the netowrk preferences and that did not help either. Is there anything I can do as I am already in Europe?

You need to call Verizon's global customer service to get your sim card provisioned for use in Europe, or your sim slot unlocked:

  • Access to internal servers using public IP address

I have an ASA5540 on 8.2(5) and I am setting up a Guest Wireless network that is on the same interface as our corporate user network, but is completely segregated and uses Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8). I have this all set up, but the only thing I can't get is users on this network can not access our external facing DMZ web servers.
    1) I have attempted to use DNS doctoring:
    static (dmz,outside) external_ip internal_ip netmask 255.255.255.255 dns
(the rule was already in place, I just checked the dns box)
and when I do an nslookup, it does resolve the internal ip but the page wont load. If I type the internal IP into a browser, the page loads (I set up a rule to allow access from the guest network to the dmz network).
    2) I wrote 1:1 static nat rules going the other way:
    static (outside,dmz) internal_ip external_ip netmask 255.255.255.255
and pages still could not load.
From what I have read, either of these solutions should work, but neither of them do. What am I missing from this setup?

I contacted Cisco Support and they helped me with this.
First, I needed to create a static NAT rule on the internal interface to DMZ for the Guest network:
    static (internal,dmz) WiFi-Guest WiFi-Guest netmask 255.255.255.0
After that, I could add in another static NAT rule for my DMZ servers on the internal interface in addition the the existing rules on the external. i.e.
    static (dmz,internal) external_ip internal_ip netmask 255.255.255.255
Once both of those were complete, the pages could load from the DMZ, but not from the rest of the Internal network

  • HELP QUICK!  My iPad is restricting me from using YouTube, when I used my friend's theirs worked perfectly (using my wifi) and when I try again to use mine at home it doesn't work. help me please!

    Dear reader,
Could you please help me quick, my iPad is restricting me from something.
I tried to go on YouTube many times on my favorite videos list and I get a message saying: you don't have permission to access the requested resource. I go to settings to see if anybody restricted me from YouTube and nobody did. I went to my friend's house and they have wifi. My iPad worked perfectly in YouTube. I went back to use my dad's iPad and after I watched some videos for a while, his stopped working on YouTube too. After then, I went back to my mom's house and the same thing happened. TO BOTH MY IPAD AND MY DAD'S! Is there something wrong with them? Please reply soon! :)

I have the same issue. When I select a video from my favorites list (this is in the YouTube app—not through the Safari browser), I get the error message "You do not have permission to access the requested resource." My sister has said she has gotten the same message on her iPhone 3GS.
The work around is to kill the YouTube process (double press the home key to bring up the recent apps list, press and hold on the YouTube icon until the red minus sign appears, then tap on the minus sign). When you restart YouTube, it works.
However, invariably, the next day, when I try again, I get the same message, and have to kill YouTube again.
