International use of IPHONE

I need help. I haven't had a cell phone in awhile and I really like what the I-phone has to offer. Here is my problem though. I will be moving to the Middle East sometime this year and want to be able to use the same phone over there that I will be using here. I called AT&T and their roaming charges are astronomical (like $4 a minute) over there. That is ridiculous. I looked into buying a blackberry who also uses AT&T as their carrier and they said I could unlock their phone, remove the SIM card, go overseas, sign up with another carrier there and use that SIM card while I am there and swap out the SIM cards as I come and go (I will be coming back to the states 2-3 times a year. I would need internet capabilities both places as well. I have heard that there are ways to unlock the Iphone but it voids the warranty (I don't really care about that too much, In my experience warranties have usually proven to be extraneous as I haven't ever had to use one), I just want to make sure that I'm not doing anything stupid or foolish, I just really want to be able to use the same phone everywhere I go and I want it to be the I-phone. Can anyone give me advice on this topic, I want to make my decision soon. I appreciate your input.

The iPhone is not an option for you at this time. You can't use it overseas with any other SIM card.
ATT will only unlock their phones for you (including Blackberries) if you have been with them a reasonable amount of time (usually equal to at least a half year of billing cycles). They won't just unlock any phone for you -- for example, there are some phones like the TILT and Blackjack that notoriously don't unlock even when you ask them to unlock it for you. Something to do with WM problems there.
But ATT is NOT unlocking any iPHones for anyone. Not an option for someone moving away. When the iPhone is finally released in the different countries of the Middle East, they will have their own sim-locked versions that only work in those countries. You can wait for that after your move.
Of course, we're not going to discuss illegal ways of using an iPhone overseas.

How does one set up a 4G iphone for use in France for a 2 week stay?

To avoid expensive international roaming, keep your phone in Airplane mode and then turn wi-fi back on.  You will still be able to use your phone for data when connected to wi-fi.  Otherwise, you will need to either get an international calling and data plan from your carrier, or if you phone is unlocked, purchase service from a local carrier and use their SIM in your phone while you're there.

  • Using the iPhone internationally...Need help!

I want to know how I can use my U.S. iPhone in Europe and to work as an international phone. I will be in Greece/Europe for an entire year and I want to continue using my iPhone. If I have to buy a new iPhone in Europe that will be fine (as long as it works in Europe and I can get calls to my old U.S. iPhone forwarded). Is it possible to buy a new iPhone in Greece to work for all of Europe (with a Greek number of course) and then have all my calls from the U.S. iPhone forwarded to it? If there is a better way, please tell. Thanks in advance.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937 has a list of which European countries sell an unlocked iPhone.
Having calls forwarded to an international number could get quite expensive.

  • What is facetime audio and can I use it to make free international calls between iPhones?

what is facetime audio and can I use it to make free international calls between iphones?

    First, check
    1. Settings > General > Restrictions: should be OFF > FaceTime: ON?
    2. Settings > FaceTime > FaceTime: ON?
ou can be reached by FaceTime at: your phone number?
If all the above are correct, see below:
FaceTime is available with iPhone 4 or latter, except those iPhones that were sold in the Middle East.
Can you tell us which iPhone model that has no FaceTime?

You want to call and get the internation data plan.  its 25 dollars for 100 mb.  if you dont buy that plan it is like 20.43 per MB.  Very expesnive.  You have the option to just turn cellular data off and only use wifi.  if you dont buy the global data poackage your going to want to do that because your phone will use data even if your not doing naything.  That 25 dollar data package works for most countrys

  • Unlocking my Iphone 5c for international use?

I purchased an Iphone 5c (blue) from a online store directed to my country. I got it new and It's locked with USA Sprint carrier, the strange thing is that it came with a Sprint chip inside which made me able to semi-activate my phone, but right now I can't use it with Dominican Republic's carriers since I need to unlock it. I'm desesperate, I'm all uncommunicated, It's been a month since I got this Iphone full new in it's box.
The chip's number is: 309-253-9769 but it seems it's no activated. I tried to create an account in the sprint website but it says the number its invalid. I don't want to sell this phone because I love itttt! What can I do?
I asked if theres a way to unlock it here but I got negative response from everybody. Is there a way to make Sprint Unlock my phone for international use permanently?
I'v always lived here in Domincan Republic, never traveled anywhere, I purchased this phone by myself.
    What can I do?
    Thank you.

You bought a gray market phone. Sprint will only unlock phones for current Sprint customers in good standing. If you're not a Sprint customer, they will not unlock it for you at all.
Return it and get your money back if you can.
Next time, buy your phone from an authorized source.

  • Can i use my iphone internationally?

I have a verizon iphone. It won't make calls when i'm in europe. Is there a way to use texting and posting to the internet anyway?

    From Verizon's Q&A's:
Can I use my iPhone 4 while traveling abroad?
Yes, you can use iPhone 4 for voice and text in over 40 countries with data service in over 20 countries. For service availability and rate information, refer to the International Roaming Rates and Coverage. When travelling outside of these 40 destinations, the Global Travel program is the perfect short-term solution for the occasional or infrequent global traveler who needs to stay in touch when travelling internationally.

  • Iphone 5s international use

What needs to be done to use an IPHONE 5s in London?

Option 1 use a local carrier. Turn off phone. Remove the Verizon Wireless SIM card. Insert the activated SIM card from your preferred London GSM carrier either a prepaid plan or another plan. Reboot the phone and let the phone and SIM card connect to the network.
Option 2 use the international plan from Verizon Wireless. Add the international plan to your account prior to the trip. Reboot the phone to get the Verizon Wireless SIM card to update itself from the network.
The iPhone 5s is SIM unlocked from the factory.

  • IPhone 5 International Use

I currently have an iPhone 5.  I am outside of the USA for school and have a local simcard.  Would I be able to replace my current verizon simcard with the local sim and use it while I am outside of the country? I would still plan on switching back to my old sim when traveling back to the USA.  From my understanding the iphone5 is already unlocked.  Just want to make sure I can do this without compromising any features on my iPhone

cdemonte25, Congrats on your studies, abroad! You're absolutely correct; the iPhone 5 is already unlocked for International use of Global SIM cards. Here's more information surrounding our Device Unlock policy http://bitly.com/1BDQy5r. Regarding the features and settings of your iPhone 5, we do recommend doing a Backup using iTunes on your PC or iCloud to ensure your phone is restored properly, if information is lost during the SIM change.

  • Will Verizon Be Unlocking the iPhone 5 for International Use with local carriers abroad like they do with the 4S?

Here is my situation. I am leaving the country on business in a month. Since it is pretty doubtful that an unlocked iPhone 5 will be available for pre-order tomorrow, I'll be buying one at full price under my verizon account (not due for an upgrade yet). Verizon currently SIM Unlocks the iPhone 4S if you meet certain requirements (account in good standing, active 60 days, phone activated on account, etc.) so you can use your iPhone abroad with a local carrier there for cheaper rates. Does anyone think Verizon will do this same procedure for the new iPhone 5? I understand that my new iPhone may not have 4G LTE capability abroad due to hardware limitations on different carrier models, however all new iPhone 5 models have quad band GSM/EDGE and 3G. Would I be able to use this feature if Verizon unlocked my iPhone? It should be noted I am not trying to unlock to use my phone on Tmobile or another US carrier, as with the 4S carriers put a block on this even for unlocked Verizon models. I am looking at this from the standpoint of a traveling business user (and I think there are a lot out there wondering the same thing). Nonetheless I will be preordering the iPhone 5 from Verizon and on release day I will call them and ask if they will unlock it. If they don't I will return it. I'll update my findings here for anyone else curious about this as well.

Egilbbys21... I am curious how things worked out with getting a nano SIM and your iPhone 5.  Our family will be visiting Manila this summer, and I would like to hear a first-hand account about your phone experiences.  Do you purchase minutes for call/texting?  What about data?  Any feedback you can give from your trip regarding your iPhone usage would be helpful.  Thanks!

  • IPhone + international use

    Hello,
I am wondering if it is possible to use the iphone in europe with european carriers. I live in canada but goto school in europe so my handset right now is unlocked so I just switch sim cards as I move between Europe and North America. I realize that currently the Iphone is for AT&T networks but is there any way of getting one unlocked so I can use it in Europe during school. I really want to have this amazing piece of technology and as a long time mac user I really feel that this is the perfect phone for me.
    Thank You,

The short answer is no. You can activate the iPhone in the US and use it to roam on European carriers for expensive ATT Int'l roaming charges and fees.
There are articles in the British press that tomorrow the iPhone will be announced for Europe as a G3 device for use with T-mobile and Vodaphone. Supposedly available for purchase in OCT. Nothing to confirm this from Apple.

  • How do I use my Iphone 4s camera while on a cruise, yet not receive texts and calls and ultimately , the charges?

Hi!!!   My family is going on a cruise this summer.  I do not want to but any internet plan on board or through verizon, as it can get quite costly with
two teenage daughters.  But, we will be using our phone cameras.  How do I block calls and texts, yet still use the camera? And does blocking them still result in no charges..roaming, international, on board, etc.?  Thanks for all advice and answers!!!

Another option you may have is to temporarily suspend service...that would guarantee you won't have any charges for unexpected texts/calls. Might be a little more extreme then you want to do though. Contact VZW for more details on that option if interested. I would echo the idea of just using a camera versus your iPhone unless for some reason you don't own an actual point and shoot camera. You can easily put the pics on your iPhone when you return home from your trip if that is the reason you were really wanting to use the iPhone for picture taking.

  • Can I use old iPhone 4S in Europe for WiFi, w/o cellular service? A few Qs not found in Support Community-

I wish to upgrade to iPhone 6, but first want to know if I can use my iPhone 4S for camera, iMessaging and apps (i.e. What’s App) on Wifi after it is disconnected from U.S. Verizon network?
iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2 (reluctant to upgrade to 8.1.2), Verizon, U.S. only
Mac Mini, OSX 10.9.5 (reluctant to upgrade to OSX Yosemite)
I’ve read all of the old posts (2011 thru July 2014), but still have questions.  This is what I understand:
Upgrade iOS and apps with iTunes, before transferring to new iPhone 6
Change the name of my old iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201997 (if I wish to name my new iPhone what my old one was called)
Enable airplane mode, then re-enable just wifi
    Activate new iPhone
Transfer data to new iPhone http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2109
    QUESTIONS:
Q: When connected to WiFi in England, Italy and Sicily - do I keep it in Airplane Mode even though it has been disconnected from Verizon and I will have an active iPhone 6 on my Verizon account being used by my husband at home in the U.S.?
Q: Will there be a problem sync’ing to iTunes in the future, or my Mac Mini?  Will it conflict with my new iPhone 6?  Or is it just considered a different device, once it has a new name.
Q: How can I message my husband in the U.S. with the iPhone 6 from Europe using my old iPhone 4S on Wifi only?  Do I use my iCloud account, like I do from my Mac Mini to my iPhone?  Or can I set up a new iMessage account on the old iPhone 4S
I appreciate any insights and answers.  Thanks in advance!
    Daphne

It doesn't have to be that complicated, Verizon iPhones come unlocked, just tell VZ you're going on Holiday/Traveling and suspend the service, no need to pay for service if you're not going to be using it. Pick up local SIM cards in the countries of your choosing, pop them in, re-activate iMessage and you're set!
I recommend getting a SIM card from the Three network in England, they have great EU roaming rates and free like-home roaming in Italy.
Set your phone's region to match the country you're in, it'll save from some headaches when calling local/international numbers.
    To answer your questions,
    1. If you choose not to have a local SIM card, it is good to keep your phone in Airplane mode to save battery.
    2. Make sure the two iPhones have different names to reduce sync/restore issues.
    3. If husband has an iPhone also, you can chat with iMessage/Facetime, just give him heads up about the new number you'll have. Otherwise, use Whatsapp if he's got an Android. You can activate Whatsapp with your American number or the international number if you choose to get a SIM in Europe.
Also, Get the MagicJack app and/or Google Hangouts, both of those apps provide you with free calling to the USA and Canada using any internet connection. Google Voice is another good way to SMS across the seas.
Let me know if you need any more tips for iPhoning across the pond.
