Internet Access Speeds - iMac vs PowerBook G4

Hi Folks,
I'm running an iMac7,1 and a PowerBook G4, both located an equal distance from my wifi hub. Neither of them are spring chickens, however my PowerBook is accessing the internet at at least 3 times faster than the iMac. The iMac has 4 times the memory and a faster processor. So what would be causing the slowness and how would I find its source?
These are both used for work and are "dodgy site" clean. Any ideas?

What version of OS X is the iMac running?  If per chance it is running Lion at this point, then the 3 GB of RAM is very minimal because Lion is a resource hog and increasing the RAM to the maximum 6 GB that your model version 7.1 iMac can stabley use would help it run much faster.  I own the 7.1 iMac also and while Apple originally said that the Maximum RAM was 4 GB, it later was found by online vendors such as OWC and Crucial that the 7.1 was fully stable with 6 GB of RAM, which is what I have been running for years.  And it certainly sped up the system.  The Powerbook running OS X 10.5.7 apparently, does not need as much RAM for that version of OS.
Hope this helps

  • How to increase internet access speed of OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia

Is it possible  to increase internet access speed of Mackbook Pro OS X 10.5.8 whilst using telstra prepaid wirless broadband internet stick in Darwin, Australia?
    How can i do this?

Network Utility (in the Utilities folder) can tell you, in the Info pane, what speed you are actually connecting at.
Just set the interface to the one you are using (which may show up as en2 or something). Link Staus and speed are shown along with error counts.
If the data rate is very different from what you expected, you may have it manually set to a lower rate.
YouTube files are enormous -- that may be the best it can do.

  • No internet access with iMac

I have an Intel iMac. I have cable internet through Comcast. About a week ago I started getting "server not found" messages while loading pages, but if I clicked refresh the page would load. This occurred with Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Then two days I couldn't load any pages, use Google earth, download software updates, etc. I called Apple and they said it was a comcast problem, but they came out today and hooked up a laptop and got an internet connection and later I hooked up my old pc and got an internet connection, which I'm using now. So the modem's working fine. The firewall is off. The comcast tech guys said they'd never seen anything like it and tried all the network preference settings. Something is not allowing the iMac to communicate through the modem to receive data off the internet. They said there's some kind of issue with assigning the right IP addresses.
Has anyone experienced or heard of anything like this and know of a fix?
    Greg

I tried restarting everything (turned everything off and unplugged all cords from outlets) and it still doesn't connect, but oddly I get different results from network diagnostics and network status. In diagnostics I get:
    Built in Ethernet -- green
    Network settings -- green
    ISP -- green
    Internet -- red
    Server -- red
And the message: Cannot find server. This computer appears to have a working internet connection, but cannot find apple.com. You may have typed the address incorrectly.
Network status reads: Built in ethernet is currently active and has the IP address xx.xxx.xxx.xx (note, I did get numbers but didn't want to publish them in case that's a security risk). You are connected to the internet via Built in Ethernet.
So, it appears the ethernet port is working fine, but something else is lost in translation between the modem and the ethernet card.

  • OS 8.5 Internet access on iMac G3 Original 233MHz 192MB

I am new to the Mac. I just installed 8.5 on an original iMac G3 and can't seem to get connected to the internet. I go through the Internet Setup Assistant but don't know how to answer the questions. It don't remember having to do this with XP. When I finish the setup, I open up Internet Explorer (who would have thought Microsoft on a Mac?) but get to any web sites. Can anyone help with this?

There are three slightly different sets of rules:
    1) you are using Dial-Up:
In this case, you will enter the "magic numbers" given by your ISP, possibly including a username and password. If you need help interpreting "what goes where", lots of folks here can help.
    2) You are using Broadband, but you do NOT have your own Router/Gateway:
In this case, you enter the "magic numbers" given by your ISP. If you need help interpreting "what goes where", lots of folks here can help.
    3) you are using Broadband, and you have your own Router/Gateway:
In this case, you use the TCP/IP Control Panel to connect via DHCP, and the rest of the fields can be left blank.
The changes you make in TCP/IP Control panel do not go into effect until you close the Control Panel and indicate that you do indeed want to save the changes.

  • Broadband internet access away from home (powerbook G4)

I've cracked this when I stay with friends who have macs, but how do I go about it when I visit those with pcs? What do I do in Network Prefs, and do I need a special cable?

Depending on what service your friends have.
In System Preferences and NETWORK, You simply choose your method of connection, Wireless, Ethernet< or Internal Modem(Dial-Up).
Next many Internet Services require authentication and you need to check with your friends to see if this is the case with there connection, If not then you will just fire that baby up and log on.
Be sure you check with your friends, and make sure there isn't anything special you need to log on with.

  • Internet Access Speed

I have just upgraded to a 16MB connection speed with Deutsche Telecom. The modem's (supplied by the ISP) status page shows a download speed of about 16MB. However, when I measure it on speedtest.net, using either my Airport-connected G5 on OS 10.5, or 2 power bridge connected G3s on 10.2.8 and 10.4.11 and even a windows xp laptop on wireless, the maximum speed I get is about 6MB/sec, which I had before on the 6MB/sec service I upgraded from.
Is there anything I can do to overcome this, or does the solution lie with the ISP?

  • IMac G4 800 mhz internet access via LAN very slow

We have a G4 800mhz running 10.3. Memory is 768K. The only use for this machine is as a music server. It is connected to the internet via LAN; internet access is extremely slow - pages take an incredibly long time to load. Download/Upload speeds are about the same as I see on my Macbook Pro so I don't think it is the connected to the internet. Is there anything one can do to troubleshoot very laggy browser performance?

You may need to turn to Activity Monitor (or "AM") in Applications > Utilities to see if a runaway background process is eating up processor cycles. If you've not run AM before, on first launch its "Show" window defaults to "My Processes." That will tell only part of the story. Change it to "All Processes"to get the full picture.
Now highlight the "%CPU" column to sort by processor usage. Best to check with no user apps running other than AM. Let AM percolate five to ten seconds to let it finish its first poll. What you are looking for are any processes that are using 15 percent or more of "%CPU" with nothing running other than AM. If you find one, post its name here and we can advise how to deal with it.
However, don't get your expectations too high that a process has gone rogue. Part of it is simply a lack of speed by today's standards. I recently upgraded a friends iMac G4 800 from Panther to Tiger so it could run the latest browsers and it was still terribly slow compared to my PowerBook G4 1Ghz running the same level OS. The iMac 800 has a slow logic board bus (100mHz).

  • ATV2 via ethernet to imac with no internet access - possible?

I have the ATV2 and its works great - and i can use it for streaming my own films that we have produced and encoded to mp4 - straight to my 36 inch TV in our living room...
...BUT I want to take my 36 inch TV with my iMac to a wedding exhibition and play my films on my 36 inch tv from my iMac - so i thought connect why dont i connect my ATV2 via an ethernet cable to my iMac then HMDI cable from the AVT2 to the TV and i should be able to access all the film content that is in iTunes as HD mp4 content on my iMac so prospective clients can see mp4 HD versions of our films -  as at the exhibition they will be viewing them from about 3 feet away rather than the usual 10 -12 feet when viewing a DVD at home.
Would this work anyone tried it? i have read some folks have had problems doing this as they need to have internet access as they are accessing their .mac account for home sharing and with no internet avaibale i wont have that facility and dont need it at the exhibition.

Yes, I'd certainly try it before you go. I've tested this on the Apple TV 1 and confirmed it works but haven't tested it with my Apple TV 2.
If worst comes to worst using a cheap router will work, you don't need to connect it to the internet.

  • I downloaded the newest version of Firefox while I was trying to access Yahoo! and now it is horribly, horribly slow. My Internet access is by dial-up. How can I speed things up or how can I get back my prevous version? What number was it?

I presume that the reason why it takes so much time for Firefox to load and then for me to get responses is because my Internet access if by dial-up. I need a less rich, or complicated, version of Firefox. The previous version was okay in terms of speed. What can I do to speed up the processing. Is it because I downloaded the version from the Yahoo website?

Try using this extension. <br />

  • Trouble accessing internet form my iMac

Hi, having trouble with accessing internet form my iMac. Both Wi-Fi and Ethernet ports show up and running properly, the ISP checked the gear and it's all up, however, I can't get out on the internet.
I ran network diagnostics sveeral times, it allways gets to the point ISP is still green and then fails at internet access...
Sporadically it allows a page or 2 and then it goes back into "freeze" ...
    Tips, anyone ?

  • Just ordered new iMac do I still need a modem/router for Internet access

Just  converted to apple, ordered a new IMAC but little confused on Internet access.
does the extreme still need a modem/router,just a little confused after reading all the comments about poor connections etc.
Old windows soldier sorry if a little vague .

The AirPort Extreme is a router, but it is not a modem. You still need your existing cable or DSL modem. That device is usually supplied by your ISP and may or may not include the functions of a router.

  • Both iMac and powerbook can't connect to internet via Airport.

I have an iMac that is directly wired to an airport base station and a G4 powerbook that connects via a card. Neither can connect to the internet. The iMac is set up as follows:
Cable modem > ethernet cable to WAN port on AEBS > ethernet cable from AEBS to iMac.
The powerbook detects the base station and created its own network as soon as it did, yet still nothing. The first and third lights on the AEBS flash as to show activity and I have unplugged the modem to reset it multiple times.
I am completely confused as to what is going on. Can anyone please help?

If it helps any, I'm in the same boat. I've had an AEBS that has worked well until yesterday. Now, my Powerbook can't connect to the internet via wireless or ethernet (connected directly to the AEBS). My POwerbook CAN talk to my networked HD. To make things worse, my two Tivos (connected to the network via an Airport Express & WDS) CAN connect to the internet.
I'm totally confused. Since I can't connect to the internet when directly plugged into the AEBS, but can connect when I plug directly into the cable modem, I think I'm going to just buy a new AEBS...

  • Connect an old iMac to a MacBook via ethernet to gain internet access?

    I have a 2008 white macbook running 10.6.8
    I have a 2004 lamshade G4 800mhz imac running 10.4.11
I do not have a wireless card for the imac and it is no where near my router.
Is there any way to connect the imac to the macbook with an ethernet cable and use the macbooks internet on the imac? If so, can you give me the step by step directions?

Connect an ethernet cable from the MacBook to the iMac.
From the Macbook, do System Preferences > Sharing and turn ON "Internet Sharing.
Set the options so they look like this:
except click the checkbox so internet sharing is "on." (I didn't turn it on when I made the screnshot.)
That should route internet servtce from the wireless access of the MB to the iMac.
You should be able to use a standard cat5 patch cable but. if that doesn't work, try either connecting via an ethernet hub or use a crossover cat5 cable. I think the iMac is new enough to not require a crossover but I add this as an option.

  • HT1498 I started downloading a rental movie on apple tv, but I live in a rural area with terrible Internet download speed...is there anyway to stop the download, and resume downloading, onto my iPad when I have access in an urban setting with high speed I

I started downloading a rental movie on apple tv, but I live in a rural area with terrible Internet download speed...is there anyway to stop the download, and resume downloading, onto my iPad when I have access in an urban setting with high speed Internet?

Yes, to be honest I was a little surprised myself. But it absolutely didn't connect when plugged into the test socket (I even tried to force a connection from the Home Hub manager but it wasn't having it). It is definitely the master socket. The only extension is a small piece of (engineer installed) phone cable to link the hub and the master socket (because the socket and mains power are unhelpfully on opposite walls of the hallway).
I ran the Java download for Google anyway and it only took about an hour. The speedtester results are as follows:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 109 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2560 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
I don't as a rule disconnect / reboot the hub; today it has been dropping off on its own, while several days ago I tried a few reboots just to try and get a connection.
Additional info - my exchange is actually called Claypole Fenton (or vice versa). Whatever, my profile has probably been welded to 135k for days and days.
    Cheers
    Nick
