Internet browser freezes after checking internet speed/bandwidth

After installing Lion I tried to determine my internet speed by using various websites like speedtest ,speedtest.net  and some more like them.
Every time when the download test was finished and the upload had to start the browser stopped.
It did not react to any commands. Only thing to do was a restart of my iMac.
This happened with Safari as well as Google Chrome.
With SL I did not have this problem.
Anybody an idea what causes this and how to cure it?

Could the setting of the firewall cause this?
I activated stealth modus.

  • Internet browser slow after 10.6.8 update - it is not the connection

I have just updated to OSX 10.6.8. After that Safari and Chrome seams to be very slow to access all kind of address. The network connection is ok and emails are coming at normal speed in outlook for Mac. Using speedtest.net I got a download rate of 11 Mbps but the pages seams to load very slower then before. Any Ideas on how to solve it? I have a mbp 13" 8Gb core i7

Have my early2009 iMac connected wirelessly to my
Airport Extreme and am having no slowdown in any internet
access with 10.6.8.  Service provider Comcast.
On my Mac, I have Configure IPv6 set to automatic.
I also have my Airport Extreme set up as the DNS server
for the network and allow it to receive the DNS from the ISP.
The Extreme is also the DHCP server.
On the extreme, wireless setup is:
       Radio mode: automatic
       Radio Channel selection: automatic
       Wireless security: WPA2 Personal
    guest access is disabled.
The extreme is configured via DHCP from the
    ISP through the cable modem.
Also IPv6 is set to link-local only.
Not sure if any of this information will be of help,
but at least with my set up there doesn't seem to be
    any issue.
PS.  Also, my 2011 13" BP i7 is also at 10.6.8 and am
having no internet speed issues over wireless.

  • Internet Browser freezes computer

Just recently when we use any Internet browsers: Safari or Firefox, our computer freezes up every time you minimize the main browser window or a small window closes.
I have reinstalled the operating system and that didn't seem to help. I also have 1GB of ram, so I know that isn't the problem either. Please help!
    Thanks

Okay, so I am deciding it isn't my internet. It just was strangely related to the fact that it would randomly freeze when I'd open the internet.
The complete reinstall I am declaring unsuccessful, because during the uninstall it decided to freeze several times. I've never had that happen to me before. Finally I just let it sit "frozen" for a few hours, but it ended up only being like 45 minutes before it restarted itself and played the welcome video.
Odd? I'd say, yes. But then it froze during the video a bunch of times, and I was never able to get an admin account created. Of course, the interesting part was that the music continued to play. Only at one point the music started repeating itself like a broken record instead of fading out. However, numerous times more I tried restarting and watching the video and it froze on the video, but the music continued flawlessly in the background.
SO I am summing it up to a possible hardware problem on my MBP. I would guess it is the graphics card or something internal that I couldn't fix myself.
    Any ideas?

  • Help! Internet Browser Freezes Computer

Everytime I try to load Safari, my computer freezes and I have to force quit multiple times. What can I do to stop this?

I agree that I'd delete the preference file, first. You can find the safari preferences on your hard drive at user name/library/preferences/com.apple.safari.plist. If the plist file is corrupt, the application may act flakey or not work at all. The plist file records your preferences, so you'll need to renter any you've previously input.
There are several utilities, two of which are Preferential Treatment and OnyX that will check for corrupt plist files, if you want to go that route.

  • 10.9.4 update causing internet browsing errors after wake from sleep

    Macbook Pro Late 2011, OS X 10.9.4
So before the 10.9.4 update, I had no problems with Wifi and wake from sleep.
Now, after the update, random web pages either don't load (Chrome & Firefox) or return a "Memory Not Allocated" error (Safari). Also, my Work VPN application stops being able to connect.  The related Console error is:
acvpnagent[104]: Function: getInterfaces File: ../../vpn/Common/Utility/NetInterface_unix.cpp Line: 1277 missing PPP destination address for interface "utun0"
The only solution I've found is restarting.
    Any ideas?

Remove the Cisco VPN client. Use the built-in client, if possible.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Itunes freezes after checking playlist for burn

Every time I try to burn a CD the itunes freezes. I create a playlist and put in a blank CD and hit the burn button, itunes checks the playlist gets to the end and the burn button stops flashing and itunes is frozen. How do I fix this I have run CD diagnostic and have repaired itunes. It has just recently started doing this.

    Kelly.
    1. Do you still get the problem if you put the blank CD in before you start the burn in iTunes and let it "settle" in the system?
    2. I need more information about your hardware configuration. If you haven't already, go get iTunes 6.0 and install it. Run the iTunes Help menu -> Run CD Diagnostics... command and post the results here.

  • Mac OS 10.8.5--FF browser freezes after waking from closed-lid sleep

I just updated Mac OS 10.8.3 to 10.8.5 on my MBPro. From that moment on, Firefox (24 or earlier) would not recover from a computer lid-closing sleep. Would not respond to mouse clicks or keyboard entries. Completely frozen. Only quitting and restarting FF would cure it.
Using Time Machine, I restored the MBP to OS 10.8.3 and the sleep and freeze issue is completely gone.
All other applications, including Safari, were fine under 10.8.5, but FF hated it.
    Similar results anywhere else?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I replied through the Troubleshooting mechanism that none of the offered situations was similar to mine.
While in OS 10.8.5 I tested Firefox every way I could, including turning off extensions. FF continued to freeze everytime I woke the computer by opening its lid, whether it had been sleeping for 60 seconds, or 30 minutes.
Hard for me to do further testing right now, as I'm back in OS 10.8.3 and everything works normally. If you have suggestions about what else I can do, I'm extremely interested, as I need to get the OS updated asap.
    Thanks again.

  • The best internet browser

hi, sorry if this is the wrong thread, but i have recently purchased a 17" imac with intel core duo and i'm wondering which internet browser is the best (considering speed and stability): safari, mozilla firefox (deerpark), or camino?

My two favorite Mac browsers are Safari and Camino. They are both Universal Binary and are both very fast. However, I still use Safari more. I like it's design better, and I have found it to be compatible with more sites than Camino. Personally, I don't like Firefox. Camino uses the same engine, but is faster, and better.
    I hope this helps.
Oh, There is a Universal version of Bon Echo. Here's a link.

  • HT5730 After I installed 10.8.48.4 Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection.  How can I get back to normal operating speed?

After I installed 10.8.4, my Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection -- unless it froze up completely.  How do I get my system back to a normal operating mode?  Can I dump 10.8.4 and go back to the one that at least worked?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Checking Internet Speed

My internet provider ( telephone company ) has come to check my lack of internet service at times and says there is a problem in the line between my house and the town , he also went on-line with his computer and checked the current speed of it and he said it was only operating at half the speed. He used some web site to check the speed which I believe he said was in the United States ( Seattle )
... After he left I should have asked ...
When will the line be repaired , Is he coming back to check the speed afterwards ..OR .. Can I just check each day myself to see of the speed on the internet is at 1.5 - where it should be, compared to about 600 right now ..
So my question is .... Is there a web site I can use like he did to check my current speed to see if the line has been repaired and if so .. is it an easy check ?
    Thanks much Eh ! ( Canadian )

If your ISP is AT&T, this is the site that the tech probably used.
    AT&T DSL Speed Test
    http://helpme.att.net/dsl/speedtest/
    Another test site.
    DSL Reports Speed Test
    http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest
1.5Mbps is the max download DSL speed of your service. Typically, you will only get 1.1 - 1.3Mbps. Your upload speed will be about 135kbps.

  • After updating to 10.6.8 internet browsing very slow

After doing the update 10.6.8 internet browsing became very slow on safari, chorme and firefox. Is there a solution to this problem.

    Had the same problem
I then  added some DNS  servers to my network configuration and now speed is back to normal (pre 10.6.8)
This is how to add DNS servers
Find some IP address of a DNS server either from your Internet Provider or use one or more of these:
    http://theos.in/windows-xp/free-fast-public-dns-server-list/
Test one or more DNS IP addresses by using nslookup
Open terminal (cmd + space type terminal)
    In the terminal type
    nslookup  nasa.org 12.13.14.15
where 12.13.14.15 is the DNS IP server address you want to test
If it works it will respond:
    Server:        192.168.1.1
    Address:    192.168.1.1#53
    Name:    nasa.org
    Address: 208.73.210.48
Now add one or more valid DNS IP address to the network settings:
In Systems settings / Network / Advanced choose the DNS tab
Press the + button and type the IP address of a valid DNS server
    Press OK and then Apply
Now your browser should be back to its usual speed :-)

  • Extremely slow download speeds and internet browsing on Macbook pro

I recently got a 13"" macbook pro. System config - Maverick OS/i7 dual core/8GB RAM/750 GB HDD, Almost 690GB of free space available. I am expriencing extremely slow download and internet browsing speed. I have to wait for almost 10-12 seconds for normal sites to download. The app updates and downloads are painstakingly slow.
The internet speeds are working perfectly fine on my Windows Laptop, and even on my mobile phones. So, the there's no issue of network. Also, I have cleared safari cache etc, just to be sure. But nothing's really helping.
Can any one help me here.
    Thanks !
    Chetan

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • SLOOOOOOW, internet browsing speed ONLY with Click2Pro P30W-BST2N01

So I have what I hope is a simple problem that someone from Toshiba or another user can help me with.  I just received my Click 2 Pro yesterday.  I was quite excited to use this machine to replace my 5-6 year old "Best Buy exclusive" Dell laptop.  The Click2 works pretty well in most areas except wifi performance and I have no idea if it's my ISP (Xfinity) or wifi hardware in the Click 2 (Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 7260).  So here is what I'm experiencing:
When the Click2 is right next to the Xfinity Arris TG862 modem/router, the machine runs as advertised.  Everything is perfect. As I move further away from the modem, opening webpages (like yahoo or amazon) get understandably a bit slower.  The results from the Xfinity Speed Test website confirm a reduction in DL speed.  All of this is expected.
However, when I'm about 30 feet away and several rooms from the modem the DL speed goes from 30 Mbps to about 3 Mbps--sort of.  Here's the problem, in my area the Xfinity speed test runs a DL and UL speed test for both IPv4 and IPv6.  If I run the test on my old Dell, everything runs smoothly and the whole test takes 15-20 seconds to run. If I run the same test, in the same location on the Click2, I get the results for the first test (DL speed for IPv4) and the computer justs sits there.  And sits there.  And the screen on the Click2 goes dark.  I activate the screen and the same thing happens.  It's like the Click2 just stalls.  The full test never runs.
I have this same problem browsing regular websites.  If I want to browse amazon or yahoo, for example and despite a much lower DL speeds when 30 feet away from the modem, these pages display in an acceptable time using my old Dell.  The Click2?  Part of the page will appear and the computer just sits.    And sits.  And sits.  The rest of the page never displays.
Why can my 6 year old Dell lap top with a crumbling case and running Vista (!) quickly DL webpages even at ~ 3 Mbps, but my brand new, very expensive (compared with the Dell anyway), fancy Click2 can't do the same?  Is there something I can tweak within either the Click2 or the modem so both devices can effectively communicate with each other?
Any help would be really appreciated!
    Thank you.

Ok, since no one wanted to provide any advice, I read some other threads in this forum.  It appears that many other people actually have similar issues. The P55W-based threads were quite helpful.  After reading those threads, I did the following:
    1) Updated the bios to version 1.5
    2) DL'd two Intel updates from the Toshiba support page for this machine
    3) Turned off bluetooth (which was something that supposedly helped some people with the same issues, but with machines from different companies)
    4) Turned off U-APSD
So how did all of this work?  Very well, I must say.  I went from not being able to browse anything on the internet, so being able to open most websites/forums that I frequent.  As I type this, I'm 25ft from the modem and things are ok.  Not perfect, but ok.
How do things compare to my Dell in the same location?  Still not as good.  It's about 75% as fast as the Dell where it used to be 10% as fast at opening a webpage.
Bottom line: The computer works well enough to where I don't want to take it back, but it needs to be better.  For example, I can watch a 3 min youtube clip when I'm 25 ft away from the modem with the old Dell laptop.  I still cannot do this with my Click2.  So this needs to be fixed.
I heard about some "secret" fix in one of the P55W threads in which one must contact 'Peter" to get the machine sent to him for some type of programming magic to be worked on the machine--and at least one person seems to have gotten stellar results.  If Peter or someone else in the know about this proported fix reads this, please let me know how to make this happen for my machine---be it me sending the computer in or doing it myself.
