Internet Browsers Hijacked

I've been using Firefox since I've owned my MacBook Pro. This morning I went to start up computer and initially all of me startup settings had defaulted (desktop image, dock style, dock applications, desktop files and apps). After restarting all seemed to be back to normal. I then opened Firefox to find that my homepage had been reset from google to an Earthlink page asking me to do various diagnostic tests. Nothing I do will get my browser to any search page. Additionally, none of my bookmarks work either: everytime I try navigate away from this new default url which is oddly located on Google's webpage (as the url is www.google.com/earthlink(whatever)). Finally, I tried opening Safari so that I could come here and ask the fine folks at mozilla if they had any ideas and the same problem was happening with Safari. So now I'm thinking I have an uninvited guest on my computer.
At that point I fired up VirusBarrier anti-virus app and then promptly left for work for the day.
So, as it stands I don't if my anti-virus app caught anything or not yet. My question for you fine folks is: can you offer some possible solutions in the event that my anti-virus app doesn't give me anything or point me towards someone who can?

Couple of things I'd check...
That Desktop bothers me, has happened on purpose, by mistake, and spontaneously...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory...

Then, there is one bit of malware that has gotten a few Macs, it redirects any DNS lookups and can substitute fake pages to get your info...

Bold text does not display in internet browsers

I am working on editing a website for a client that I did not originally create so I am having trouble trying to figure out what the previous designer did.
I need to make certain text within paragraphs bold, which I normally do by inserting tags. However when I do this in my coding, it does not display as bold in any of my internet browsers ... IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc.
Can someone please help me with this or suggest what I may have to change in my coding?

The reason it is happening is because the element is the child of an , the is in turn the child of a tag and all of them are set to inherit the font attributes from thier parent tags. The first parent in the chain with a font setting is the <div> tag with the "left_column" class.
The "left_column" class tells all of those child tags to set their text as 14px, black, Arial due to the font:inherit.
The reset is meant to allow you to create css styles for all future tags without any default style being applied by the browser (as Rik suggests, creating the actual " strong {font-weight:bold;}" in your css would also do the trick). Since you don't specify any attributes for those tags other than "inherit your font styling from your parent", they take their attributes from the first parent element with an attribute.

If you are referring to a "lock", it was removed with the Statusbar in Firefox 4. The S-I-B is used to indicate a secure connection.

Internet Browsers wont open web pages.

I have Windows 7 Home. None of my internet browsers (firefox,IE,chrome) will open any web pages. Was working fine the day before and now nothing. When you type in an address or search on the google tab it just thinks for a a while
then the address bar goes blank and nothing happens. Internet is connected and working fine by cable. Other computers on same network are working regular. Please help... did alot of searching on forums and nothing i have tried yet has worked.

I agree Zigzag, the issue can be caused by one of the following factors:
a. Network connectivity issue or network-related issue such as DNS resolve.
b. Malware.
c. A conflict with firewall or a firewall configuration issue.
d. Third-party software or Internet connections settings issues.
e. Internet Explorer configuration settings.
f. Certain core Windows files are corrupted or missing.

Did you turn off the hardware acceleration?
Since you have 3 browsers and they all are having issues and you listed the FF add ons we'll try to see what is conflicting with that browser first.
First I need to know what Anti-Virus program you are using and does it have it's own Firewall; if not do you use any Firewall other than Windows Firewall?
Do you have an extensions in FF? Do you have any plugins or add ons that pertain to your Anti-Virus in FF?

Flash Player crashes internet browsers in windows XP

Hi everybody,
from day one when I installed windows and have tried to watch flash content from any video websites like youtube etc..my internet browsers have crashed stating.
I have tried IE6, IE7, firfox, safari each of them with flash different versions player 10,9 and 8. Error has repeated it self everytime.
Its been a about a month i bought my Unibody late 08 Macbook and have not been able to watchin videos. very rarely i get BCD as well when playing videos.
Im at work can will provide the exact error detail that come up.
I want know has anyone else experienced similar issues, and if yes is there a fix for it..

i want to contribute to the statistics of touchpad driver not working with vista. the touchpad is crashing vista when the touchpad is used. sometimes just leaving it there would crash vista. i have since learned not to use the trackpad altogether and rely on an external mouse. i also hope that apple fixes this problem asap. i'm surprised that 5 months passed since the last released version of the bootcamp touchpad driver and apple still hasn't make any official response. howard

I use Dolphin Browser 6.0. Its faster than 5.0 and has no issues with Flash. I have used flash and used the Beta 6.0 and now the actual released version. Its the best so far. It has tabs like a normal computer browser and even has a gesture feature to do scrolling.
Others are Firefox which has NO flash. Then there is SkyFire which is ok, uses its servers to compress data and show it on your phone, its quick but I found the quality of images not as good as stock.
Opera Mobile and Mini do the same as skyfire.
I personally just didnt care for Xscope of Miren browsers. Didnt care for the feel of Xscope and Miren was developed in China and is modeled after Iphone Browser.
Try em all if you want, biggest benefit of the aftermarket browser is you can sync certain accounts (dolphin with google, firefox with firefox) and instead of storing the Cache info using phone memory you can now save the data and the web browser on the SD card.

All Internet Browsers Freezing

I've found lately that all my internet browsers freeze after a random amount of time surfing, The only way to get out of it is a force quit.
Here's my info:

Ditto - numerous crashes. I have repaired disk permissions. Reinstalled Flash 10. ESPN.com will not load and the beach ball appears. Open to any and all suggestions to repair. Very frustrating. Happens in Firefox as well.

Upon carefully looking at the fonts in my fontbook, I noticed that the font which is commonly used on the websites was missing all other kinds except its bold version. How did they get deleted beats me. Anyhow, I have now installed the regular, italic, and bold-italic versions of the font and it is all back to normal. ccccc

Internet Browsers won't load

Internet browsers won't load. I am connected to Linksys Router wirelessly but even with an ethernet cord in it won't load up the internet.
If I switch the modem on/off manually it lights up the internet light and I am fine again until I log off.
I have been on the phone to both the ISP, Network technical support and Apple, still can't seem to resolve.
Getting very frustrated now! Not sure where else to get help?

Turn off everything; modem, router, shut down Mac. Wait about a minute and then power up the modem, wait a minute and power up the router, wait a minute then power up your Mac. Have you tried connecting ethernet directly to the modem?

None of my internet browsers will display youtube in fullscreen.... Help?

For the past month, and this happened out of the blue, my internet browsers are not displaying youtube videos in fullscreen correctly. Safari, the basic apple-based browser started displaying the dock over the videos (but not the menu bar), and to close out that full screen i have to click somewhere in the video and then I have about 2 seconds to close out before my computer starts machine-gunning the error noise... As for chrome, fullscreen last about a second and then resorts back to the normal size, with the result of shifting the application out of focus. Firefox does the same. I have made sure that I am not running any third-party plug ins, and have checked numerous times for any virus on my computer. I am not running any plug-ins, and have no viruses. It's very frustrating, and any help would be appreciated.

Is there any reason why you have never updated your OS from 10.4.6 to 10.4.11?
Chief suspect is the FlashPlayer.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here: http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2 and then the latest version obtained from here: http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.

I can't download the National Lottery website using Firefox or Windows Internet browsers I have cleared cache, cookies & history

I have always been able to download the National Lottery website without any problems until Monday since then it is the only wensite I cannot access using both Firefox and windows internet browsers. I have contacted the national Lottery and they have assured me there is no problem. I have cleared cookies, cashe and internet browing history from both browsers and i am still having the same problem. Help!!!

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Internet browsers crushing on Snow Leoparde

As others have been posting here, my internet browsers stopped working after I installed my Snow Leopard.
I have a Road Runner Cable connection.
the online connection works fine on the same computer, I have the problem with, when it is via system updates.
Also, my windows xp, which I'm posting this with, works just fine.
I clean-installed safari, firefox, and opera as well as snow leopard; it works fine in the beginning, but the connection dies after several hours.
I hope there is a snap fix!

Internet browsers for 10.1

How can I upgrade my browser? I want to try Safari but you require 10.2 or above. I'm currently using IE5.1. But I'm having problems from some sites saying I need to upgrade. Firefox needs 10.3 or above. Any suggestions for internet browsers for 10.1 will be appreciated.

As Niel says, Opera and iCab have browsers that work in OS X 10.1.x. iCab is the only browser whose current version will work in 10.1.x. Opera, along with Camino and OmniWeb offer earlier versions that will work under 10.1.x.

Internet browsers do not work after updating to Windows 8.1.

I have spent several hours researching my issue, performing fixes that have worked for others, but to no avail. I have talked with 3rd party tech supports, in addition to Microsoft tech support. I also recently spent 3 hours under remote access with a helpdesk
employee. To no avail.
My issue:
Recently updated to Windows 8.1. Immediately following, none of my browsers work. Internet Explorer is entirely out of commission. Firefox and Chrome, however, interestingly, are able to open simple google pages: gmail, google maps, google search - I can
even search things that I want and results will show up... they just will not load if I click on them. The error message when I click on "More" says something along the lines of "maybe it's your firewall or antivirus wrongly detecting Chrome...",
and I think maybe something similar for Firefox. Explorer simply says that it cannot display the page.
So, how am I writing this? I am currently booted up in Safe Mode, with networking. Apparently it works here, which I'm hoping indicates that the issue to resolvable.
Remedies I have attempted:
I have restarted my computer over 60 times in the past 2 days.
I have troubleshooted the internet connection via the button that says "troubleshoot". It says it cannot identify the problem.
I have executed various command prompts executed as administrator: i.e. netsh winsock refresh, advfirewall refresh, something to do with ipv4, ipv6, a bunch of "IP stack resets", etc, etc.
I have manually added chrome, firefox, and explorer to my firewall exceptions, both via McAfee and via the Windows firewall system. Both simultaneously, one at a time, etc, every combination of this.
I have uninstalled the web browsers and reinstalled them.
I have unintalled my antivirus and reinstalled it, and checked in between.
I have turned my firewall off.
I have manually inputted some kind of DNS address (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and/or IP address (forget exactly what was asked of me to input).
I have gone to my "Manage Devices" and updated all of my network drivers, and attempted to revert to old versions of drivers.
There are probably more things that I have tried, I just don't remember exactly and cannot list them. Most things you can find on Google pertaining to this issue, I've tried.
Is there anything at all that anyone can think of to fix this situation? I am about ready to refresh my computer/do a systems restore/whatever to erase everything, factory reset, even (hopefully it works, because I've read that some people have issue, i.e.
no previous partition found or something, or no recovery media present, etc, etc).
Before I resign to this, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELP ME.
Also, may I please note here that given the sheer frequency of this issue around the web that I've found, I think it is absolutely ridiculous and irresponsible of Microsoft not to rectify the issue. This is even 3+ months following the release of the
update; I always lag on updating such that bugs like these are fixed before I get on the train. This update has essentially reduced my multi-hundred dollar computer to an infantile calculator/solitaire/checkers/Microsoft office LCD screen. Not to mention wasted
2 full days of my time.
Sorry, just saw red there at the end and had to vent my anger. Please help.

I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. I will try to help you in fixing the issue.
Please test this issue in the Clean Boot environment to check if there is some conflicts with network.
If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue.
