Internet cable connection on rear of imac  ... am I totally stupid

Hi chaps - I have never tried to connect my iMac to my modem I've always run it wirelessly but whilst trying to upgrade the modem's firmware I was struggling a bit and thought I'd connect it with a cable, searched through a box of cables I had and figured the small version of the ethernet connector looked like it would push into the back of the iMac but it wouldn't (I didn't want to push too hard) is this socket peculiar to Macs or am I doing something wrong ... (forgive me I don't actually know what all of these cables are called) Thanks to anyone for taking the time Roger

These connectors are a universal standard, so if your phone system uses them, it does not matter what country you live in, they are the same, identical in size and attachment.
Most telephony based ADSL systems use a cable with a standard RJ11 connector on each end to connect the wall port with the WAN port on the rear of the internet gateway. The router portion of the gateway uses cables with standard RJ45 connectors and the cable should be rated as Kenichi stated above for proper data rates.
What appears to be confusing is which Mac the OP wants help with, an iMac G4 or an iMac Intel. As Duane points out, if it is his iMac G4, it has both an Ethernet port and a telephone port. An iMac Intel only has an ethernet port. But for either machine the ethernet port, the larger of the two, is the one he should be connecting to one of the ports on the router portion of his gateway with a cable with connectors B in his posted photo.

can i run a printer off the ethernet cable connection without hurting the imac or is the ethernet slot only for internet connection?

    Hi, Alan -
How can I connect to both printer (HP 4050n, via direct connection) and internet (via LAN), as my iMac has only one R45 port?
You can, but you'll need to expand your cabling a bit.
You'll need to get an intermediate ethernet hub, switch, or router. That device sits alone, with the Mac, your printer, and your modem/LAN plugged into it.
If you are already using a router, either separate or in combination with the modem (many modems have a built-in router), then you just need a hub or switch.
I use an ethernet switch (10/100/1000) to let both my Macs (a 2010 iMac and an elderly G4 DA model) use my HP4000n printer and my modem. The ethernet switch is a passive device, meaning there's no setup nor instructing it required - it's truly plug-and-play. All four items (two Macs, printer, and modem) are plugged into it via ethernet; both Macs have full-time independent access to the printer and the modem.

  • Airport network to share internet cable connection

Don't know if this is possible, but this is what I'd like to do:
Keep my iMac connected to the cable modem for internet access (very fast here). Both the iMac and the MBP have Airport Extreme cards. Could I just turn on Airport on both to create a filesharing and web sharing network between the two and be able to access the internet wirelessly on my MBP (using the iMac's internet connection)? Because of the configuration of my house, I've decided that a wireless router is not the answer at this time, but I'd love to be able to surf the web on the MBP without having to unplug/plug in/reset the modem cable every time.
I've tried it for a while now, but since I couldn't find any help topic for this anywhere, I really didn't know what I was doing and it didn't work.

I did try exactly that (I chose Ethernet on my iMac since it's connected to the cable modem) and Airport on my MBP. Turned on personal file sharing and web sharing. Chose "connect to server" -> my iMac network address from my MBP; also chose my MBP network address on my iMac. Got all the bars on the MBP Airport, but they wouldn't talk to each other (message on MBP: "server is not responding" or somthing similar). Tried different server addresses (numbers as well as name). Opened Firefox on MBP, but could not access any web page.
Would appreciate any further ideas on why this is not working or what I am doing wrong.

  • IMac slows down wifi/LAN cable connection

    Hello,
I came across a quiet unique and annoying problem, that I have not seen being discussed so far.
I spend the last 3 weeks trying to solve my internet/wifi connection following all kinds of posts here.
Problem: Wifi/Lan internet connection is slow (less than 0.8mbit/s)
Problem only appears when I login with an iMac via wifi OR lag cable
    iMac, 2011 27`` Mac OS 10.7.5
    Background:
I have a 20mbit/s internet connection with my provider. works fine on iPad, iPhone, appleTV HTC one mini, etc… BUT as soon, as I login with my iMac, the internet connection slows down to less than 1 mbit/s
    I have tried following solutions:
    - live box (router) was exchanged and is brand new
    - security settings on router changes (wpa2 etc)
    - all channels on router tested from 1-13
    - keychain saved passwords for Wifi and router deleted, PRAM reset
    - renewed lease of connected devices (no IP conflict)
    - shut down wifi on iMac - connection with all devices great, as soon as i switch wifi on, all devices lose their high speed connection and go down to less than 1mbit/s
    - connected iMac via LAN cable: same problem, all speed is lost
    - iMac is not in the network - speed is great
    - connected iMac via time capsule wifi, same problem. connected iMac via netgear extender, same problem
also, if I open network preferences and start the "assist me" app and run diagnostics, all dots are green except the ISP and server, bit most of the time they switch to green immediately, but connection is still slow.
Reception bar is on "3", so signal strength is no problem, and I´d like to emphasize that this is also happening on LAN cable. and again, if the iMac is disconnected from wifi AND / OR LAN, all other devices work fine.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks!

Although I have been on Mac OS for a while now, I have never had to troubleshoot faulty network in the mac itself.
OSX does apparently have a safe mode boot..
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Try that.. as that gives you the same thing as windows with all the extras left out, so you get a basic operating system only and you can see if the problem still exists.. if it does.. I would simply bite the bullet.. wipe the Mac.. reinstall the OS and then carefully reinstall your applications from original disks/downloads and move your operating files back .. but start a different user on the computer and copy back the min you need to get working again.
If the problem still happens even in safe mode boot then do a hardware test.. because it is possible something has actually failed at the hardware level.

  • Help, I cannot connect to the internet via airport with either my Imac or I-Pad.  Connecting via ethernet works okay for Imac.  I can connect wirelesssly with my windows laptop.  I have reset my router, created a new network. It was all okay on Monday

Normally I have my IMac, I-Pad and Windows Laptop all working on my home network via wi-fi. This week I find that I cannot access the inetrnet on my IMac or I-pad via wi-fi but I can connect to the internet via wi-fi with my windows based laptop.
The airport diagnostics (reds/yellows) indcate that I am connected
I can access the internet if I plug my IMac into the router via an ethernet cable
I have restarted the IMac and the I-Pad, rebooted the router and created a new network.  None of these changes has made a difference.  Does anyone have any ideas please?

  • Two 1st Generation iMacs using 1 Broadband Cable connection - Best way?

    Hi guys,
I have a snow iMac (600Mhz) running 10.2.8 - I have it set up with Virgin Cable Broadband (formerly Telewest/NTL using a Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem), my mum has passed us her old Tangerine iMac (400Mhz) also running 10.2.8 - I currently have both set up in one of our bedrooms, they are about 2 metres apart on seperate desks.
I have asked this to quite a few people but am getting different answers all the time so I am hoping you guys here can help in giving me a definitive answer:
What's the best way for me to get both of these iMacs on via by Cable connection? - I don't want wireless, I just want wired ethernet.
Some people are insisting I need a wired router similar to this:
    http://www.broadbandstuff.co.uk/productinfo.php?productsid=225
Whilst others are saying that I just need a switch device similar to this:
    http://www.broadbandstuff.co.uk/productinfo.php?productsid=113&osCsid=7b23b40476276b3714287fcad8b20a38
    Can anyone confirm please?
    Thanks

I know I have closed this thread off, but wanted to
    ask Alan one more question...
Did you have to recontact NTL when you got your
router to supply them with the new code on the router
before it would work?- A guy at my work has said I
will need to do this, is this correct?
    Hello IntelMacMini,
No I did not contact NTL about anything. I think you may have to do this if this is the first time you have made any connection to the internet.
I presume you already have one computer connected to the broadband modem as I had.
All I did was unplug the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer and plugged it into the internet port on router and then ran an ethernet patch cable from one of the numbered ports to the computer. Then I switched on the router and followed the instructions that came with the router until it was up and working and connected with the internet.
Then I connected a patch cable to another numbered port on the router and plugged it into the ethernet port on the second computer.
Next switched off both computers, the router and the modem in that order.
Then switched on the modem waited until all was working ( lights steady ), then the router until all the right lights were steady, then the first computer and checked that it connected to the internet, and finally the second computer and checked the connection.
With the third old g3 powerbook OS 9.2.2 I just set the TCP/IP to connect via ethernet and configure using DHCP server and plugged it in without switching anything off and it worked first time.
It sounds a bit complicated but if an old technophobe like me can do it anyone can.
    Hope this helps,
    Alan

  • TS2756 How can i create a new usb connection (service)  on my iMac for sharing internet from my iPhone5 ( i seem have to deleted it )

How can i create a new usb connection (service)  on my iMac for sharing internet from my iPhone5 ( i seem have to deleted it )
i know its not a problem whit my carrier o data plan or sharing preferences on the ipone because when i use it un my laptop it works perfectly through
the usb and even works on the Imac through wifi and bluethood tethering but NOT through usb!!.
the problem is that trying to make it work i deleted the "profile" usb iphone on the network prefereces panel. Now i only have 3 options: ethernet / wifi / bluetooth
but not the usb iPhone i used to have.
And when i try to add a new one i dont get a USB option.
can some one help me please??
this is how it looks (after the bluetooth PAN i used to have USB iPhone option)

The question would be more appropriate in the Mac forums as it is not really related to the iPhone.

  • What cable do I need to connect my 27 inch iMac to my Cinema Display

What cable do I need to connect my 27 inch iMac to my Cinema Display to have two displays?

It depends on what type(s) of video input you have on your TV. If you've an open HDMI port on your TV, you can use a Thunderbolt (Mini DisplayPort) to HDMI adapter and it will carry the sound also. See -> here.
    Good luck,

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.

  • What is the process for connecting ethernet.  Have ethernet cable connected to stereo received for internet radio and Blue Ray. However Network System Preferences indicates ethernet not connected and has red dot to left.  Note Airport wireless is working.

What is the process for connecting airport extreme ethernet?  I have ethernet cables connected to stereo receiver for internet radio and another to blue ray player.  The system preference network indicates "ethernet not connected" with red dot to left of this message.  The airport wireless works and has green dot to left of it.  The stereo receiver and blue ray player do not respond and give message not connect to internet.  Thank you.  /  cfpirate

It worked for me finally. I took out the DNS numbers in airport admin utility, and restarted the airport express. I do not remember putting the DNS numbers in, I wonder from where the airport express got those numbers.
    After restarting, it worked.
    Thanks!

No. Your iMac only has DVI video connection. You would need an iMac with Thunderbolt.

  • Can I connect my cable box to my 2011 iMac

Can I connect my cable box to my 2011 iMac

If you are setting up to use Wi Fi connect the Ethernet cable to the cable box then to the router.
Some companies like Comcast have online manuals available online for instructions. Check your cable company's web site. The manuals should be available in PDF format.

  • Why can't I connect with internet cable?

With my old macs, if someone had an internet cable, I could plug and go. But with my LION, I'm not able to connect easily to the internet. Can someone tell me why? I've run the network preference diagnostics and that doesn't help. Also, I turned off my firewall and that doesn't help either?

If it works with another computer it should work with the mac running lion.  I would suggest going to network preferences,  Select ethernet, and then click on the little settings gear icon at the bottom left and make sure that it isn't set to inactive.
