Internet/Computer Speed Slow Since Safari 5

Ever since I installed Safari 5 on my iMac, it seems to be having trouble surfing the internet with any sort of normal speed. Since it's a mac, you'd assume that it would be super fast like it is over the wireless connection on my Acer Aspire, but Safari 5 appears to have killed it.
I've tried clearing the cache, getting rid of the non-mac plugins and unplugging and replugging the cable connected to the router on both ends. It seems to only be a temporary solution (Internet is only at a normal speed for less than 5 minutes)Is there something that I'm missing that needs to be fixed or something that I should try?
The specs of my iMac (G5+iSight):
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac8,1
Version: 10.6.4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores:2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: IM81.00C1.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.29f1
Any help would be great at this point

I have nothing too earth shattering to add at this point, other than to say:
Have you tried using Firefox as your browser? If so, does it still run as expected?
Clearing caches usually slows things down for a while. The cache allows for speedier downloading of previously visited web pages, but they can become bloated and unmanageable. I haven't cleared by caches for years, but my web experience remains satisfactory.
All web browsers are resource hogs. Nearly every article I have read about speeding up the net experience recommends periodically closing and re-opening the web browser. I usually do it a couple of times a day on the weekends when I do more web surfing that what's good for me.
Sorry I can't answer your particular question, but that's my two cents.

  • Internet downlaod speed slow...

    Hi,
Is there a reason why my desktop pc has a faster internet connection speed than my mac? When I test my speeds on 2wire.com, the PC clocks at 345 kbps through internet explorer (winxp pro) and the mac at 165 kbps through safari, and firefox browsers. I tested them first with my internet cat5 plug into each computer separately, and then both hooked up to my linksys router, testing at separate intervals with one powered off while the other tests. Even my wife's Dell laptop wireless connection clocks faster 20 feet away. The PC has a PCI ethernet adapter, and for the mac, i use the internal 100 base tx it came with. I don't know much about this, so if I am leaving something out here please let me know what I should be asking..
    Thanks!

I too, have a similar problem. My problem is with upload speed. I have a 1.9 Mbps Download and 384 Mbps minimum upload DSL connection. When using SBC's (AT&T) speedtest, My actual download speeds are 1.5-1.7 Mbps. But, my G5 2 GHz dual w/1.5 Gb RAM, consistently gets less than 200 Mbps (usually in the 150 Mbps range) upload speed. In addition, I have four G3 PowerMacs (one of which is a Pismo Powerbook connected via Airport) and a HP running Windows XP that all get at least 400 Mbps upload speed. All of these computers are connected on my network and share the same DSL Modem.
Can anyone tell me why the G5 gets slower uploads than any of the other computers on my network?

  • Ethernet speed slow since security update 2014-001

    Dear community
I'm running a Mac Pro early 2009. OSX 10.7.5. Internet through Ethernet cable connected to a dlink router dsl-g624t. This has been my setup for years. All worked fine.
As of last few days (corresponds with my updating the system with apples security update 2014-001) that my Internet download speed is 0.01 Mbps it used to be 5.0 Mbps. I can't connect to anything. Sometimes it's ok for a few seconds then dies down completely. Connecting to the routers own IP address is slow as well.
I've plugged the Ethernet cable into another mac (laptop) and all runs at approx 5.0 Mbps as it should. I've connected the Ethernet cable between the Mac Pro and the mac laptop and transferred a 1Gb file both ways with out any noticeable speed issues. I've connected my ipad wirelessly to the router and I can achieve good speeds, again about 5.0 Mbps. Same with my iPhone.
In system pref/network it states the Ethernet 1 is connected, with an IP address etc. as if there was no problem.
What is going on. The Ethernet cable works, the router works, a connection over Ethernet between my two macs works.
What doesn't work anymore is my Mac Pro connecting to the router via Ethernet. It's so slow it can't load a simple web page in either safari or Firefox, other web connecting apps time out as well.
    Someone please help
    With much thanks in anticipation

Going to reply to my own question here.
I've never let a mac get the best of me in 15years of working with them but this problem had me stumped. Anyway I did figure it out. Not being very experienced with network issues I had to tincer about a bit. Anyway the fix for this should someone else have it can be found here in... system preferences/network/ethernet (1or2)/advanced.../Hardware/ once in this option window I had to change 'configure' to 'manual' and 'speed' to '10baseT/UTP' and 'Duplex' to 'full-duplex' and 'MTU' to 'Standard 1500'. I then had my full ethernet speed back. I believe it had all been changed by the recent security update.
I hope that helps someone sometime.

  • Internet download speed slows to 20% of normal every night at about 8:30 P.M. Pacific Time

My internet download speed, which averages just over  5 Mb/s most of the day, slows to about 1 Mb/s every night at about 8:30-9:00 P.M. Pacific Time and lasts for a few hours.  It is consistent and constant so random equipment or line problems are unlikely.  I've saved the results of my speed tests (speedtest.net) as to evidence the problem and posted them below.

Looks and sounds like the usual case of congestion during prime time hours. Have you tried asking Verizon to change the circuit or edge router your DSL line connects to, in order to solve the problem? Often times there seems to be an imbalance in how circuits are loaded on Verizon's DSL network. It's a rather typical experience for a shared medium (such as DSL, Cable) but steps can be taken to try and balance off load periodically. Verizon should have some free circuits available that will allow you to reach your speeds during the night time hours.

  • Since Mountain Lion Upgrade is my Internet connection very slow, Since Mountain Lion Upgrade is my Internet connection very slow

Why is Safari so slow after Mountain Lion upgrade?

I have a home Optimum wifi network with Boost connecting to an Airport, with a second Airport extending, and an Airport Express extending. I have a MacBook Pro, last year's model, two iMacs, a year old each, and an older iMac. (If necessary I can get all the models etc, but I just want to express the problem). The two new iMacs and MBP are running Mountain Lion. The older Lion.
Since upgrading to ML my connection speed both over the wifi and directly connecting to the router has dropped from 30-50 down and 5 up to between 1-4 down and 4 up. I have had the cable folks here to test lines. We've swapped out the modem with a new one. I bought a new netgear N600. Everything led to the same result.
Here's the odd part. When restarting the modem and plugging it directly into the powerbook, initial tests show 30-50 up and 5 down. But once you reconnect to wifi, lose speed, the re-connect directly to the modem the slowness persists directly connected to the modem.
So I start suspecting Mountain Lion. BUT the older iMac cannot be upgraded to Mountain and is still running Lion and has the same issue. The equipment is in the same place it's always been. We've added no electronics that would be interfering with signals.
Everyone is stumped and looking suspicously at the computer and OS. Please help. I'm beginning to hear the bing bong bing bong of dial up in my head.

  • Internet Connection Speed SLOW!

    My Set-up...
2012 MacPro 3.33 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon running Mavericks 10.9.5
    Airport Extreme Base Station -  Card Type: AirPort Extreme  (0x14E4, 0x8E) - Supported PHY Modes: 802.11 a/b/g/n - Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.22)
    Modem - NEW Arris DOCSIS 3 CM820
Suddenlink High-Spped Cable (up to 50Mbps advertised in my area)
MackBook Pro 17" 2011 Model running Yosemite 10.10.2
Here is my problem. Last week Suddenlink increased the minimum bandwidth in my area to 50Mbps from 15Mmbps. They said I would need to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3 Modem to be able to take advantage of that speed increase however, so they sold me a new modem (Arris CM820) which I hooked up today.
I ran a Speed-Test at http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ both with my old Motorola Modem just before I disconnected it, then ran the test again after I upgraded the modem. I am connected to BOTH my PowerMac 2012 and my MacBook Pro 2011 via the SAME WiFi Network Base Station (Airport Extreme). My older MacBook Pro immediately showed a HUGH Speed Gain when running the speed-test, but the MacPro "download speed" actually went DOWN??? What could cause this?

As far as your configuration goes, I do not see anything strongly out of whack. You may want to set IPv6 to link-local only (both here and on your Macs) since it is not yet used for most Home Networks (but may be used by Bonjour Service Discovery). It seems unusual that your Airport Admin port (50.27.113.156) is set to a "real" Internet address, and not just a 10.0.xxx.yyy "strictly-local" Address, such as Manually  10.0.1.201 (just beyond the range you are using for your Macs). Do not set anything to 10.0.1.254 -- that is reserved for Broadcast your local network.
The way it is set now, I can ping that Admin address from across the Internet. It is showing about a 75 msec answer time at this writing, and no lost packets.
In the 2.4GHz band, there are at most three clear channels at higher speeds (where the channels were originally created for older 11Mbits/sec.) You are showing at least six other Routers in range. Using the 2.4GHz range means you are trying to shout over those other Networks. This will work for a while, but when they are active, you will slow way down.
Slowing down appears to be what is showing with your updated Option-WiFi screenshot. Your signal strength is still very good, but your Transmit rate had to be reduced from 130 to 104 due to inability to send without errors at highest speeds. You may still be getting errors, which would cause re-transmissions and slow your speed test results, but may not be so slow that the Transmit speed would downshift again (yet).
As an experiment, try running your Router at 5GHz n-mode only. Use it for a while that way. Maybe even run the speed Test. Then capture that Option-Wi-Fi data again and post it here. I would expect it to show a consistent higher speed (like 300), and not give you other problems. But if it cannot attain a higher speed, that may indicate a Hardware Problem.
I do not understand why your Mac does not move to the 5GHz band automatically.

  • Why is my computer running slow since upgrading to os x yosemite?

I upgraded my MacBook 13" Aluminum (2008) to OS X Yosemite earlier this year, and ever since, my computer has not been as fast as it was on OS X Mountain Lion or before.  It ran fine then, but my speed has fallen harshly.  Is there a way to make my computer operate faster?

Unless you've added RAM since you bought the computer, you could probably increase the performance by adding RAM. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

  • Totally frustrated - Internet moving extremely slow since update

Just started happening recently out of no where - I browse with Safari - but just realized it also happens with Firefox - takes forever to open a page - and forget it if even the simplest of multimedia, like pictures, happen to be on the page - for example a simple imdb.com page - and if i go to YouTube to play a simple 5 minute movie - well i can't wait long enough for it - could be twenty minutes before the thing will actually play without stopping every two seconds.
I feel like this started happening ever since I did my last updates which was for Safari... It is usually always something like that, being that once I installed a quicktime update, and all my videos lost audio - It was crazy. I thought updates were supposed to help! And apple does nothing about this stuff.
I have already "emptied the cache", "reset safari", and "repaired disc utility' - to no avail I should not have to be doing a ton of other stuff, and finagling with my computer in areas i shouldn't be, and don't understand, just to fix something that an update from Apple has upset. So frustrating!

    Hi Eww - Thank you...
Sorry, I thought I did say the update I did was "Safari" - Safari 3.2 to be exact on Nov 19th. This only started happening right after, that I know... And I am finding around the internet the same problem with no resolution. People noting a very similar problem since doing an update, some having done the most recent one (this very week's update which I don't even want to go near now), with more devastating results:

I agree that it shouldn't be effecting Firefox - but it is... I don't claim to understand how that would work, but if things always made sense, we wouldn't constantly be needing to find "third party" fixes to things...
My hard drive is just above 100 GBs, and about half remains. no huge storage files have been adopted... I have not changed any network settings. I get a strong wireless signal, however, I am not sure what you mean by running OS X maintenance tasks- Could you please advise?

  • Internet connection labouriously slow and safari constantly crashing

My g4 mac running panther is consistently and painfully slow when surfing the internet. A couple of years ago a friend gave it a makeover by inserting loads of new memory, which I thought would generally speed my mac up, but it hasn't. I also have two hard drives.
I followed some advice on a blog about cleaning up safari (removing extra languages etc etc) but this has had no effect. In fact Safari continues to crash repeatedly every session. And I get that whirring wheel between each page.
I tried to download firefox but it wouldn't load properly and explorer is as bad as safari.
I was getting used to this until I started using my partner's laptop during the day. (Windows xp).
I couldn't believe how fast the internet was. In fact I felt like i'd been in a dark ages time warp for the last two years. The internet was nothing like I had thought it was!
Does anyone know how I can bring my mac into the 2010s?
    Tina.

    Hi tinaMac,
You may find this link is better for finding the correct 2.0.0.20 version of Firefox (the last supported version for OS 10.3.9). I think Tom's link above redirects to a later 3.0 version that requires at least 10.4.
You might also want to try Camino 1.6.10 browser and see if you like it better.
The slow or sluggish behavior of your Mac may in fact be a matter of general system maintenance such as running the cron maintenance tasks if these are not run regularly. Read Dr. Smoke's (of the X-Lab) FAQ concerning maintaining Mac OSX found at:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintainingmacosx.html

my connetion speed has dropped from 128Mbps to 10 Mbps since installing itunes7. anyone else experiencing the same? i`m running windows xp on a pretty much brand new toshiba satellite.

Today I have had a visit from an engineer and my faulty extension(?) has been replaced as has the original BT master socket with a BT ADSL v1.0 filter.
The interesting thing for me was that the engineer asked if we had Sky HD which I must admit I did not think could be an issue but when disconnected the slow speed I had been experiencing increased to Downstream 2.688Mbps, Upstream 448Kbps.  So obviously Sky is taking some bandwidth?
After the new extension and ADSL faceplate the downstream/upstream speed have remained the same (as when Sky disconnected).  I am hoping that speeds will improve over the next few days but was informed that it is possible due to previous issues that the speed has been throttled which may mean it will not recover without me contacting BT directly.  If this is the case how long should I wait?

  • Computer running slow and safari crashes

I posted the following message in the safari section and got no responses, I hope this forum will be more fruitful;).
My friends' iMac G4, running OS 10.3.9 has started acting strangely including Safari crashing on certain web sites. I had them clean out the cache, remove the cookies, delete the history and run disk utility--things they never did on their own. But the problem has persisted. I plan on having them reset safari and trash the safari preferences but I'm concerned it may be more of a system wide problem rahter than a problem with safari alone. They did email me the crash log, could someone comment on this and determine if it helps point to the root cause of the problem. Incidently I also plan on running disk warrior when I get over there in the near future. Here is the crash log...

    Bob
including Safari crashing on certain web sites … Here is the crash log...
    Thread 0 Crashed:
    0 com.apple.JavaScriptCore 0x961d1f64 compile_branch + 0x2dc
I would guess that the web sites causing problems use javascript. It is strange that javascript should crash straight away, so I'm wondering it they have the correct version for 10.3.9?
There isn't an easy way to access this information except via Terminal (or Property List Editor if you have Developer tools installed). Here's the command you need, although I can see it will be tricky for you to copy and paste this command into another machine (you could always log on from that I suppose).
defaults read /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/JavaScriptCor e.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Info CFBundleVersion(that's all one line, by the way).
    In 10.3.9, the version I have is 312.3.2, while in 10.4.10 I have 418.6.1.
If what you get from this is nonsense, I think you would be looking at an Archive & Install. An alternative would be to rerun the 10.3.9 Combo Update and the Security Updates that followed that, and then make sure to re-run the "SafariUpdate1.3.1.pkg 18/8/2005" and the "SafariUpdate1.3.2.pkg 5/1/2006" because both of those updated JavaScriptCore.

  • My Macbook is significantly slower since I downloaded Lion X

    Hi there!
I download Lion X months ago, I remember I had duplicate icons and software then, I say many people having this problem though. I followed a few steps in order to finish with this issue and the duplicates were finally deleted. Since then (the download) my mac is significantly slower and sometimes frozen for few seconds, I can't open several apps as I used to because I have this problem. I don't know if I really deleted the duplicates, if I look for "safari' using finder it still appear two of them. I don't know if this problem is related with the slow runnig of my Lion.
I've other issues since then, for example when I 'turn my computer off" with the "Mail' app running I can't never turn it off if I don't turn that app down myself cause is says "Mail is not letting turn the computer off" and it sometimes happens with other software I've downloaded afterwars like "Vuze".
Is this slowness related with the duplicates or why is my computer so slow since then?

I do not download apps from torrents, I only download movies. I've done it since I bought my mac, but since I downloaded lion X everything's turned slow and the colour wheel appears constanstly (specially when Mail is open). Regarding the duplicated icons I just mentioned it cause it was a problem that many people had when downloading Lion X, I had it myself.

  • Why is my second computer's (wireless) internet speed slower than my 'base' computer's (non-wireless)?

My son has a Macbook that  he uses in another room of our house. The router is at my desk, and is wired to my desktop MacMini. Why should his internet speed be slower than mine? Is there a remedy such as switching providers or routers?

According to the manual for the router you said you have, the maximum supported speed is 22 Mbps for 802.11b and 54Mbps for 802.11b/g - since that MacBook supports 802.11a/b/g/n, 54Mbps is the best case scenario if it's negotiating an "g" connection or 22Mbps if it gets a "b" type connection. So what is your internet connection speed? And that 22/54Mbps is best case - depends on how many wall and other obstructions it goes thru by the time it gets to his MacBook.
If he holds down the Option key and clicks on the WiFi icon in the title bar he should see what type of connection his MacBook has negotiated with the router. For example here is what mine shows (the connection type is listed as a 802.11/g, 2.4GHz, 54Mbps, channel 11, 20 MHz, etc):
Another thing to try and make a quick measure of the speed between his MacBook and the local router and your Mini is copy a big file from your computer to his. That will give you a good idea of the speed of his wireless connection to the router.
    Good luck...

  • My internet isn't working anymore, its not the wifi but the actual computer safari and google chrome. Its not loading particular websites, and if it is loading them, they are different to how they use to be. Computer was slow yesterday as well
