Internet connect cannot open communication device

Hi.. I just upgraded to Leopard and suddenly started to get the above message constantly, over and over again every few seconds... i can still get on the internet even when it tells me it can't... i don't know how to stop this message.... has anybody else seen this? i have turned off bluetooth, ethernet and other ways that i would try to get on the internet if necessary, but i can't stop the message.

I would suggest you got to the system preferences and open Network.
click on the location bar and select edit locations.
Click the + sign and create a new location with a name of your choosing. Then select 'Done'
Then on the left select each port that you don't use and click the minus sign to remove them. then click apply and see if this fixes your issue.
btw what type internet connection do you have? and what type of modem do you use?

  • Error message - Cannot open communication device

Our internet connectivity works fine but we get the message frequently. How can I get rid of this reoccuring problem?
    Thanks,
    Keith

try making a new network location.
    system preferences-->network-->location-->edit locations
click the + sign, title your location with a name of your chooseing, click done and apply.
then from the list of network ports delete all the ports you dont use, such as bluetooth, firewire etc Then apply.
See if that fixes the issue.

  • Internet Connection - Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP.

I just bought an Apple TimeCapsule and set it up normally, following instructions to my Arris cable network on the Videotron provider here in Quebec, Canada. The TimeCapsule did appear as a wireless device on my MacBook Pro (after updating the AirPort software from the provided CD - as was instructed). I went through the whole installation process to obtain at the end this error:
Internet Connection - Your Apple wireless device does not have a valid IP.
The only provided instructions were to check the cable and then contact your Internet provider. Well it seems clear to me that if I contact my provider and say that the internet connection works fine directly on my computer, also fine through my "normal" wireless router but not with my new TimeCapsule, I won't get much of a response.
After a lot of research, a friend indicated the solution in my case.
You have to really reset the cable modem to convince it to start giving out IPs again.
    To do this:
    1. Unplug your TimeCapsule (possibly you might have to reset to factory defaults - see the documentation)
    2. Unplug your cable modem
    3. Reset your cable modem by pressing the reset button with a pen (or something) for several seconds.
    4. Plug your cable modem back in and let it reboot/restart - until the lights are back on.
    5. Plug in your TimeCapsule
Everything should now work and you can restart your AirPort set-up on your Mac.
    Good luck!

My ISP is AOL.  The service is DSL via a broadband modem.  Somewhere during the setup process there appears to be a communicatiosn issue between the Airport Extreme Base Station and the DSL modem.  When I hook the DSL modem directly to my iMac I can connect to the internet without any issues.
I tried the factory reset and the DSL modem reboot process described in other posts and seemed very close to success...until the internet setup step.  That is where this issue first presented itself.

  • Cannot open/stat device

    Good day to all.
I'm trying to install Solaris 10 (11/06) on my pentium D box. I have 1 SATA hdd (primary master) and 1 DVD-RW drive. The hdd have 2 primary partitions - 1st - win-xp, ntfs, 2nd - for Solaris OS and 1 logical partition. During installation process I have an error - installboot failed - failed to install boot block.
After that I boot in single user shell disagreed to mount found solaris partition on /a and entered command - /sbin/installgrub stage1 stage2 /dev/dsk/c1d0s0 and got an error - cannot open/stat device /dev/dsk/c1d0s2
I don't understand why installgrub trying to use c1d0s2 instead of c1d0s0?
By the way, mount /dev/dsk/c1d0s0 /a works fine.
    Pls help!

    Hi,
    I have a disk with 2 partitions. 1st partition I installed solaris2 filesystem/slices. 2nd partition I created via fdisk from within solaris.
I assigned 2nd partition to a zpool. Creating the zpool trashed my MBR, and I could no longer boot Solaris off the hard drive.
booting into singleuser mode off the install cd, solaris detected the 1st partition, and mounted it at /a. Running installgrub gave me the same error message.
    Trick I tried:
    Copy stage1 and stage2 files off /a/boot/grub into /tmp.
    unmount /a.
    re-run installgrub
violla installgrub has no problem writing to device. The MBR was restored! Horray!

  • Getting an error 'Cannot open Boot device' while trying to install Solaris

    Hi,
We were trying to install Solaris * on a Sun Sparc system and the CD rom drive does not seem to get recognised. When we try booting from cd rom we get an error 'Cannot open boot device' .
This server was up & running and we were trying to remove a hard disk that had failed and modified the vfstab script . After that the system failed to even boot up. So when we tried reinstalling the OS we are running into this problem.
Am new to this technology ...And any help would be greatly appreciated. .....
    Thanks

Cdrom drive must be scsi device 6
I assume you are running < boot cdrom> at the ok prompt
also at the ok prompt run the command <probe-scsi> (without the angled brackets) you need to see the following:
    Target 6
Unit 0 Removable read only device TOSHIBA XM.......bigpileofnumbers
If not, check the cdrom drive and the cdrom inside
    hope this helps

  • Sporadic Rotating Loss of Internet Connection for Just Some Devices

    Hi,
We've been having a problem where one or two of our devices (phones, laptops, iPads, Apple TV) lose internet connection for 10-30 sec at a time, while the others are fine.
As best as I can tell it's a full loss of connection, not just something running very slowly due to us pushing the bandwidth limits. I've experienced the latter elsewhere and this manifests very differently. It will instantly and fully disconnect a person from an online game or drop a skype call without the accompanying prolonged lag or distortion of bottlenecked bandwidth.
It happens at all times of day, and does not seem related to our peak times of bandwidth usage, nor the general public's peak times of usage.
We should have enough bandwidh for our usage, and usually we do. Our system is 25/25 Mbps and during our peak use at most we would probably have 1 laptop gaming, 1 HD video stream, and 2 non-HD streams. However, like I said before, the problem seems unrelated to overall bandwidth usage. The same problem occurs even at midnight when our local usage is minimal.
Overall we have 6 laptops, 5 phones, an iPad, 2 microcell signal boosters, and Apple TV, in total connected to the FiOS. We have a property with tenants where the signal is distributed via 3 WiFi routers and one direct ethernet cable to my laptop, and one to the Apple TV.
It happens on devices that are both connected through the WiFi (wife's laptop, phones, iPad) and ethernet (my laptop, Apple TV). It can happen with devices that are a few unobstructed feet from the WiFi router. However, it anecdotely seems to happen more on our phones than laptops.
My hunch is it is something outside our local network. This is because our equipment  and usage has basically remained unchanged over the last couple months. (We got one new microcell tower for a different carrier, one new wifi router, but overall same # of people and patterns of usage.) And yet the problem seems to be getting worse. Back in probably early November I don't remember this problem occuring at all.
My second best guess is there are more devices connected to the network than it can handle simultaneously, and it rotates which gets kicked off. Maybe this was occuring before but we didnt realize it.
My third guess is it has to due with signal interference with the various WiFi routers and microcell boosters. However, this seems less likely since it also affects devices connected via ethernet cables.
Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated! Thanks!
    -Ned

Ok, so in the mean time we decided to upgrade our service so I've only tried this solution now.
My problem though now is I can log into 192.168.1.1, then give my verizon admin password, and then set my channel preference. That seems fine for changing the main network input and wifi router (call it A).
However, we have another wifi router (call it B) which is fed from A via a cable. I cannot figure out how to change B's wifi channel. Therefore I worry if we have only switched A, since A feeds B (as well as the 2 microcells) they will all still be on the same channel and therefore still interfering with each other.
I have tried www.routerlogin.net (and .com) as written on my netgear router and I get "http://searchassist.verizon.com/" telling me "Sorry, We could not find www.routerlogin.net". I have also tried logging into wifi router B via all the 192.168.1.X addresses I see listed on the Verzion account when I log in via 192.168.1.1 (in total I tried all the 192.168.1.[1-24] options).
    Thanks for the help!

  • Printer klling internet connection for all wifi devices in office

    Hi!
We bought office jet 8600 pro and connected it to the main office desktop computer through ethernet cable. This main computer is also connected to wifi router.
All other laptops in office are using wifi router for internet and for printing.
As soon as we installed new printer it started to conflict with alll wifi devices in office. Basically all laptops and phones loosing internet connection for 2-15 minutes. Usually when somebody from main computer is using printer.
I read in another thread about similar problem and tried to fix this by checking firmware version of router and making a static ip for printer. I put printer to 192.168.1.250. It didn't work, internet keep going down. As experiment i made a static ip for my own laptop too -192.168.1.50. it didn't work too. Need help. Thank you!

Sorry. Actually we have 2 routers. First one is working as a connector for ethernet and another one is a wifi router. Printer is connected to the router(connector). Wi-fi router is connected to router(connector) too.
If printer is connected to the router(connector) every 5-10 minutes wi-fi for all computers in the office become restricted (without internet access).
As soon as you are pulling out the ethernet cable from printer, everything works fine.
There are two computers that sharing printer by ethernet cable. Others are using wi-fi connection through  both routers to connect to the printer. Wi-fi printing is working good by the way.

  • Imac;internet connection drops but other devices still work fine

    Hey Guys,
I have an Imac 2.5 Ghz running Lion 10.7.5. My internet connection keeps dropping about every 30 minutes or so while my other devices (Mac book and iPhone 5) are working absolutley fine. This is resolved when I turn my wifi off and on, but only for about 30 minutes. Using browsers is fine this way but say online gaming is a disaster. I've tried several approaches, I renewed my DHCP license, which seemed to work for a while but after a few weeks the problem resurfaced and renewing didn't work anymore. I tried different DNS adresses but that does about the same as turning the wifi of and on. I tried rebooting the router too, didn't work and i tried deleting my network and forcing the computer tos tart all over again. I also tried chaning the MTU size, also with no avail.
Any suggestions would be very welcome!
    Cheers,

There is a utility called iPhone Configuration Utility that you can download from apple.com - iPhone Configuration Utility 3.5 for Mac OS X (there is a windows version as well).
You can connect the iPhone via USB to a Mac and try to connect to WiFi, the Summary tab produces a console log of the connection messages.
If the unprotected access works, but protected does not, the hardware has very little knowledge of higher level protocols. It is unlikely to be a HW issues.
Can you connect to other protected networks other than your home?
Was an Diagnostics run conducted another of your devices?
If you have more than one Access points, it may be worth looking at your configuration at home.

  • Establishing internet connections before opening browser?

I'm trying to gain a good understanding of what automated processes my MBP is using to establish connections with the internet before I open a browser. My MBP is an early '11, 2GHz i7 Quad-core running OS X 10.9.5. I didn't think establishing connections pre-browser would be the case, but when I run a netstat in Terminal after turning my Wi_Fi on I find that it is establishing contact with 4 Google servers. 3 in the 23.61.00 range and 1 in the 23.74.0.0 range. Is this normal? This is done before I open my browser. I've always trusted Google, however I question why my computer needs to connect to this many servers. And why all Google? I've actually changed my default search engine in my browser to no avail. Any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

You can check for the presence of the Google Software Update application. In a Terminal.app window type the following and press the Return key:
    defaults read com.google.Keystone.Agent
If it’s not installed on your computer you should see:
    Domain com.google.Keystone.Agent does not exist
    Otherwise you may get:
In this example, GSU checks every 18,000 seconds (5 hours), independent of any Google apps running. Further Info:

  • Retina macbook pro with thunderbolt ethernet adaptor drops internet connection on open apps after waking

I recently started using a thunderbolt ethernet adaptor and every time my comuter wakes from sleep, all the apps that were open no longer use the internet connection.  I have to restart each one of them for them to be able to use the present internet connection. any ideas?

So I've noticed similar behaviour on my Macbook Air. It's a slightly different set of kit, since it's connected to a Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock (http://www.belkin.com/uk/p/P-F4U055/). I'm on my second one of these because first one went back because it kept on dropping the internet connection (sounds familiar?) - and it *might* have been occurring when waking the system from sleep (I didn't make a mental note).
Anyway the replacement was working perfectly, until today - when it's started to drop it's internet connection again, and this time I'm pretty certain that it's related to waking from sleep. The main difference now is that I *just* upgraded to Mavericks, and I wonder if the sleep problem has reared its ugly head again in the latest version of MacOS?
All in all I have to say I'm pretty disappointed with the reliability of thunderbolt & the Belkin Dock thingie. Although it should be said that a single lead from my Macbook Air to the Express Dock is simultaneously carrying: video (1920x1200), Firewire800, 3xUSB3, gigabit ethernet and sound, so I'm not that surprised this technology is prone to the odd glitch, and the cables get really warm too!
It would be great to have some solid information from Apple/Belkin about this.
    Cheers, Jon
