Internet Connect crash/Software Update won't open

I have a 500mhz G3 slot loading iMac running 10.3.9
About 2 weeks ago, after waking FrankenMac up from sleep mode, I noticed the Airport status symbol failed to appear in the menu bar (next to the volume/date&time etc).
Looking into my Network settings revealed that I was indeed still connected to the internet, via my Airport, all systems go. However, I noticed that "show airport status in menu bar" was unchecked, so I checked the box. Which apparently did jack squat b/c there's still no icon.
For the last couple weeks, as long as I've been connected to the internet, I could really give a flying flip about whether the airport status icon is there or not. I mean, seriously. I know this computer is a little old so why rock the boat on something trivial?
Until today. Today I was determined to figure out where the icon is, why it went away and if there are any other underlying problems.
I started first with Internet connect. Applications->Internet Connect, clicked on the purple IC button, only to have it launch in the dock, bounce once, then quit.
_A crash log shows:_

I attempted to open Software Update next to see if there was something critical (ha!) I might be missing. Apple menu->software update and it was a repeat performance of Internet Connect, except this time I wouldn't even get so much as the Software Update icon in the dock. The dock would move everything to the left, as if it was going to open, then....nothing.
*Software update was working as of 6/14*, when I updated (perhaps foolishly) to Quicktime 7.5.

This ridiculously long post boils down to 2 questions, really.
• Any ideas why Internet Connect and Software Update won't open and how to fix?
• Where in the world is my Airport status icon? (not that it matters since I'm connected to the internet, but doggone it!)
I've run Disk Utility, repaired permissions and the HD checks out fine. I'm just at a loss (not surprising, given my limited amount of fix-it-yerself knowledge)
Should I just put up, shut up and be grateful that these problems, while aggravating, aren't majorly disrupting my life?

Okay no worries, can't find where to delete this post...

  • Internet connection and software update issues

We recently updated our MacBook Pro 10.6.8 and now are unable to connect to internet. It says the operation cannot be completed operation not permitted. We've tried other wifi connections without success. It also fails to check for software updates with the same error message as the internet. Any suggestions as to how to solve this, or are they even connected issues?

I'm a little confused by this question.
***   We recently updated our MacBook Pro 10.6.8 etc.  ***
    Updated it TO 10.6.8?
Updated it FROM 10.6.8?   ...  In which case what did you update to.
    Is this a Mavericks adventure?

  • No internet connection after software update

Yesterday I did for the first time my Nokia E51software update. I followed after instruction, update has installed properly. After update I backed up my data and settings. But there is one problem. After update my phone lost internet connection. Everytime when I try to go to the internet my phone is connecting Vodafone Live, but after that always appears error - Web: connection time out.
I wanted setup internet settings here, but I see that Nokia doesn't do automatic setup anymore Hell, how it was helpful and handy!!!
I was also on my mobile provider's (Vodafone) website, but they doesn't have any manuals for this kind of Nokia like mine.
Do you have any suggestions what should I do?

If you have done a full backup in PC Suite, then do a fresh Restore but this time uncheck the Settings options and just restore the others.
It is usual that settings may change after a firmware update.

  • Some Of My Apps Like AppStore and Software Update won't open on my MacBook Pro

some of my major softwares like AppStore and SoftwareUpdate and ,,,, are not working!!!
    please help
(I'm using Mavericks and Cant upgrade it!)

    A.
You ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanse" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below. If you use any iWork applications, you may need to delete them and redownload them from the App Store.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
    B.
"Kerio Control" must be updated, reinstalled, or removed.
Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Software Update won't connect in Mountain Lion

Software Update indicates that I have an update available for Pages, but when I type in my Apple ID and password in the App Store (which is where Software Update takes you in Mountain Lion), I get a "Connection failed" message every time. The App Store seems to accept my password on my iPad okay. Is there a problem with Software Update in Mountain Lion?

To follow up, I've been on the phone with Tech Support for two days, and they're stumped too. When I try to connect to Software Update, I get the following message from the App Store: "Cannot connect to the App Store: An Internet connection is required." However, I AM connected to the Internet; Safari works fine, as do all other apps that require an Internet connection. Moreover, I CAN connect to the App Store via the Internet for everything BUT "Software Updates" -  "Featured," "Top Charts," "Categories," etc. For some reason, however, the App Store won't let me connect to Software Update or to "Updates" in the App Store because it cannot detect my Internet connection. I've tried repairing permissions, a "safe mode" restart, creating a new "test" user to verify that my network connections are working properly, and finally today I did a re-install of Mountain Lion...all to no avail. Furthermore, my system (Mountain Lion) seems otherwise to be functioning flawlessly. No other problems at all.
It appears that the problem may not lie with my system, but with Apple's Software Update somehow, but so far they can't seem to track it down.
Curious as to whether anyone else has had this problem with Mountain Lion.

  • In the middle of downloading an update for garage band and lost the connection, now the app won't open or finish the download.  Can I reinstall the app without losing my music?

In the middle of downloading an update for garage band and lost the connection, now the app won't open or finish the download.  Can I reinstall the app without losing my music?

The obvious way to resolve this on a computer would be to uninstall the app, then reinstall it, however on an iOS device that would cause all the data assoicated with the app to be thrown away.
Make sure your iTunes library has the latest updates for all your apps, then backup and restore the device. This should pull back a fresh copy of the app from your iTunes library and then give it the data from your device backup.

  • Cannot connect to Software Update & Safari can't find server

    iMac G4 Flat Panel 800MHz
    Tiger 10.4.11
    DSL/ ATT Yahoo
I can't connect to Software Update. Also:
Safari 3.1.2 can't connect to internet, instead I get the following in browser- "Safari can’t open the page... because it could not connect to the server"
Other browsers likewise can't connect, except Firefox 2. which does connect with no trouble.
I have tried various "fixes" suggested elsewhere, without success. If you have any idea what it may be and how to fix, you will be 'friend forever' Thanks in advance.

I had this same problem and solved it by unchecking "web proxy". The trouble is, it gets checked again without me doing anything. This happens repeatedly, even if the setings are locked.
    Any ideas?

  • Cannot connect to Software Update

I have been unable to Connect to software update on my mac. It has been a few months now, and I was required to download the 10.5.6 combo update and manually do this.
Here is some more information on my problem:
I am connected to the internet, and able to navigate to any site that I choose. I can operate MOST programs that need internet access, such a Mail, Safari, iChat, and iTunes. I am unable to connect to the internet through AdiumX, and I cannot send program bug reports to Apple.
If I do the network diagnostics, I can connect to everything up to internet and Server. I have tried what it tells me to do there, it failed.
I have tried accessing this on a seperate New user. Didn't work.
I have reset my router, Did not work.
I switched to OpenDNS which has not shown to work.
I tried to ping the server apple.com with the network utility, and got this response:
    Ping has started ...
    PING apple.com (17.251.200.70): 56 data bytes
    --- apple.com ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
I really do not know what to do at this point, but I would like any advice I can get!

I have the same problem with software update. I also have problems with iChat, AIM, Skype and a slew of other apps/connections. I have narrowed this down to port 2068, checked it with a port sniffing site and it is indeed closed. I have also reset everything I can, checked the firewall in the Airport Extreme, the firewall in my machine is turned off. I have also checked "Little Snitch" - which I have enabled -but that port isn't blocked from there. If anybody has any clue as to what can block port 2068 I would be very grateful!
    Cheers

  • Unable to connect to software update

New mac pro, has been unable to connect to software update, multiple attempts over past 3 days. Other browser problems listed in other thread, but this is the most concerning at the moment. Linksys wireless, DSL modem, Cisco router. Airport extreme card (I installed)

    Linksys wireless
Do you show an active wireless connection in the Menu Bar (fans are lit)? If not, check your Extreme Card to make sure the physical installation is correct.
On the Network end: Linksys is not a good wireless unit for the Mac Platform. Not very good support.
To make the best of it: Make sure you have the latest firmware installed for the Linksys unit. Same for the Cisco router.
Here's some suggestions specific to the Network Panel:
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
    - Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
    - Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Airport ought to be checked, unless you are using a Bluetooth device. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
    - Back to the "Show" menu>Airport. Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 208.67.222.222 and
208.67.220.220 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box, or try the Verizon codes of 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 and select "apply".
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.

  • Due to slow internet connection, I cannot update my iphoe to new version 5. Is there any shortcut

Due to slow internet connection, I cannot update my iphoe to new version 5. Is there any shortcut where I can update my iphone to new version quickly

If your computer's connection is slow then you can update your iOS from your phone.
Find a free, strong Wi-Fi network.
Go to Settings>General>Software Update>choose option "Download and Install"
Benefit: if you update phone through this method the actual download size will be only 30 to 50 MB only! and it works fine! if you try to download iOS from iTunes it will goes around 800MB.

  • Software updater won't update

Hi Garry here, has anyone had issues with software updater not updating?
any info would be most greatfull

Did you find a solution this problem.
    I have both a 20" G5 and a 20" Core 2 Duo.
The G5 died and had to reinstall completely with the Tiger Disk. It installed fine and can connect to the internet - but when software update is run it get about a 1/5 of the way and never completes. As far as the iMac G5 is concerned software update has never been run.
Is there a problem with software update finding a large cumulative series of fixes from 10.4.0 to present?

    Help

For whatever reason you don't have the Yosemite version of Disk Utility which is 13. I suggest you reinstall Yosemite.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Check that you have the current version of Disk Utility.

  • Itunes & software update won't download

I opened iTunes today and it said there is an update so I clicked Download.
When the App store opens, a couple old apps like Final Cut are still up there that also don't work as well as a new Software Update.
I hit Install All and nothing happened apart from an error message about Final Cut.
I restarted twice and still it's happening, although iTunes and Software updates won't show up.

Did you try simply downloading the latest version of iTunes using the link below and then installing it on top of the older version?
