Internet Connection during Standby Power Mode

Hello.  I use a T61 with a wired Internet connection (cable modem).  Recently I've been reading that hackers can exploit a laptop that's not in use, as long as it has power.  I was wondering, does the T61's Internet connection remain active when the T61 is in Standby power mode?
Thank you,
Donald

Hi Donald,
Welcome to the Lenovo forum
Probably your cable modem does something called Network Address Translation (NAT) that should make it impossible for computers on the Internet to initiate connections with your ThinkPad. It might be possible that a bug in your cable modem could allow such access, but I've not heard of such exploits.
You can add another layer of security by making sure that your ThinkPad doesn't listen to its LAN connection while in standby / hibernation. That's called "Wake on LAN" (WOL), and you want to turn it off, in two places:
BIOS. Press the F1 key at boot to get to BIOS setup. Navigate to the Config: Network menu and change the following settings to "Disabled": Wake On LAN, Flash Over LAN, Ethernet LAN Option ROM.Then save BIOS settings and exit.
Windows. This page about "Insomniac Syndrome" shows how to stop devices (including your LAN) from waking your ThinkPad.
I'm glad to see you're thinking about security. These days the web is so popular that it's probably the most likely source of security problems. Things you can do to keep safer:
Back up your important data regularly! If you do one thing, do this.
Keep your web browser updated. They're all patched regularly to remove security holes.
Keep Windows up to date. Same deal.
Don't run software from untrusted sources.
Install the "NoScript" Firefox browser extension, if you can live with it.
Install good anti-virus / intrusion detection software such as Norton Internet Security 2009. (The firewall helps, too, but is definitely not a panacea.)
Try not to get too paranoid. (I'm speaking to myself here.  )
Happy ThinkPadding,
Frank

In case of lost internet connection during mountain lion download from app store, do i have to start over?

How do I speed this up.  I have a fast internet connection but this is obviously not right.
The speed of the downlaod is dependant on the speed of your Internet connection. "I have a fast Internet connection...," doesn't actually mean anything unless you provide some numbers.
I have a cable Internet connection with 32 Mbps download speeds, but if you have DSL, you would probably be limited to 1.5 Mbps. Some would call both of these connections "fast," but obviously one is faster than the other.
What is the speed of your Internet connection?? Don't say, "fast."
    Test it here: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1

I've lost internet connection after a power outage; how do I restore?

Check with your internet provider for help.  Your modem or router could have been damaged if they did not come on after the outage.  If your modem and router look OK all you should have to do is restart your iMac.

+My internet connection dies when going into sleep mode. What can i do to fix this?+
It's not broken. Don't put your computer to sleep manually and do change your Sleep settings on the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. Your entire system can operate without interuption when "Put the display to sleep" is activated, so that time can be shortened while you lengthen the amount of time the computer will be awake to something more convenient - or set it to "never."

  • Loss of Internet connection after after power "Blackout"

I have a Linksys WRT54GS router connected to Charter.net cable modem.
I do not have a static IP.
This summer we have had several power blackouts. The electricity is gone anywhere from 10 seconds to a lot longer.
When power is connected again, the router is not able to receive an IP address from the Cable modem. Therefore the LAN side of the modem works, but no access to Internet. After a power restart of the Linksys Router I am again connected to the Internet. It seem that the Router boots before the Modem and when asking the Modem for the IP address gets no answer from the slower booting Modem. When I am at home it is an easy problem to solve but when I am in another part of the Country I loose the connection to my Base Computer at home.

    Is there a solution???

what is the firmware version on the router?? try reducing MTU to 1452...let me know if you have any issues will get back to you.
    thanks

  • No Internet connection during a few minutes any time I start up my iMac

When I start my iMac up (ethernet connection), I have to wait about 3 or 4 minutes to be able to use a navigator, as there is no internet connection. I get messages like Time out or DNS failed etc... then after this time the Interne works.
I have no problem at all with my iPad and wifi.
    Could you help?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • I lost my internet connection during an itunes upgrade and now my phone is stuck

during an itlunes upgrade session, my phone stuck without upgrading what can i do to release the session and start over

You didn't say what kind of computer or operating system you have, which makes it harder to make suggestions, but I'll try anyway.
If it is a Windows computer open a command window in Administrator mode (I can't tell you how to do this without knowing the OS) and type:
       netsh  winsock  reset
Then reboot the computer and connect the iPhone. If it still doesn't activate find the hosts file on your computer, and delete any lines that contain gs.apple.com. Again, the procedure for doing this varies with computer type and operating system.

  • Internet connection during a phonecall

Is it possible to be connected to the internet while on a phonecall on the iPhone? I had no problem with my Andriod doing this, but now if I'm on a phonecall, I cannot get into my emails or any on line app...?

My understanding is the VZW's CDMA network does not support the recently added specification that allows simultaneous voice and data.  At least this is one of the points that comes up all the time in the iPhone forums in the ATT vs. VZW "discussions".

  • Slow internet connection during the peak hours

Hello my I just got my Fios internet today and after 8:00 PM the internet is very slow.
I did a speed test on multiple servers and the download speed was 6 mbps and it was choking a lot.
I did the same speed test 6 hours ago and I got 75 mbps. Now even the verizon webpage gets stuck loading. I will continue to monitor my internet speed till the end of this month. If this problem is not resolved then I will switch to optimum which I already have and did not cancel yet. With Optimum I get 50mbps download and 15mbps upload and thats speed is constant and never goes down during the peak hours when everyone uses the internet. Please do what ever you need to do such as install more load balancers or upgrade your lines. For my line of business I need my internet to be cast and reliable.

What you're experiencing is exactly the opposite of what happened here.  When I had Optimum Online speeds would fluctuate substantianally at busy times of the day.  Since getting FiOS I've never seen that fluctation.  Speeds are the same day in and day out.
Having said that, I can't tell you what's causing your problem.  I suggest you try calling Verizon tech support during the evening when speeds are slow and see if they can shed some light on the cause of the problem.
Or maybe take some screen grabs of speed tests when speeds are good and when they're bad, and then Live Chat with support, sending them those screen grabs.
    Good luck.

  • Fairfox loses the Internet connection

    Hallo.
Fairfox is looses internet connection in standby mode. It is repeat every time after some minutes from starting Fairfox. Some aplications was installed- "BetterPrivacy 1.68", "NoScript 2.6.5.", Adblock Plus 2.2.3, Dr.Web Anti-Virus Link Checker 2.7.5, HTTPS Finder 0.85, Download Master Plugin 1.4.6, TS Magic Player 1.1.21 and some else. I don't want to run Mozilla in no-apps Mode, because thease apps are important for me. What do I need to do to fix this?
See the fix-problem tecnical information in a window below:

'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''

  • Evaluate FB4.7 on a computer with no internet connectivity

    Hi,
I need to evaluate flash builder 4.7 on a development environment that has no internet connection (due to security policy at my company)
Unfortunately, using the creative cloud setup requires a direct internet connection during the setup (and not only during the download).
I would like to have a complete evaluation setup, that I can copy manualy to the isolated computer and install it directly there.
Can you please advise how can I overcome this issue?
    Thanks in advance!
    Tamar

I believe Creative Cloud Package tool can be used for this. Refer [0]

  • Losing internet connection, Yosemite

    Hello!
I just upgraded my Macbook Air (2012) to Yosemite and have noticed something rather odd.
While using my notebook during the day, I have discovered that it loses its connection to the internet for maybe 2 minutes before going back online again.
This has happened to me two times during the day today. I have also checked my internet connection during these two downtimes and its not my internet that's down.
To sum up, my Macbook thinks that I have no internet for 2 minutes and then goes back online without me doing anything.
Has anyone else experienced this issue since upgrading?
And I just wanted to add that this is a problem that has never occurred prior to upgrading to Yosemite.

My 6 month old 21.5" iMac is doing exactly the same. Every now and then it drops the internet connection and won't automatically pick it up again - the same as you Coobik i have to turn wifi off then on again.
    I'm using a D-Link DIR 655 router.
Tried the online support but kept getting cut off so they gave me a US help line number to cal... i told them i live in Thailand...
... and i can't even watch my ApplTV as home sharing gets cut off when the the network connection drops
Very frustrating... i keep waiting for a fix... if i can stay connected long enough to download it
    Apple please help us !!!

  • How to disable internet access during Adobe AIR installation

    Hello,
I am trying to install Adobe AIR in an enterprise environment on numerous clients.
Unfortunately the installation procedure always tries to open an internet connection during installation.
As all users in our company require proxy authentification for internet access, the authentification dialog of our proxy always shows up when installing Adobe AIR. So the installation can not be processed without any user interaction.
We would like to install Adobe AIR silently in the backround. So we are looking for an opportunity to disable the internet access during AIR installation.
    Thanks for any help,
    Alex

    Hi Alex,
You might want to give the Settings Manager a try (located at the bottom of this page.)  However, I suspect the network might still be pinged regardless of this setting.  Please let me know how it goes.
    Thanks,
    Chris
