Internet connection extremely slow in most applications

I have an aluminum iMac 2.4GHz. I also have an iBook G4. Both are on the exact same desk and connected to my universities internet connection.
The iBook can surf the internet fine, as well as download software updates with no problems. However, the iMac takes soooo long to open a webpage, and can only do it on half of the attempts. Using Software Update is a joke because it takes 5 minutes to download a megabyte, and then times out. Mail also has problems.
Stranger still, when I finally get to a download page to download some freeware, the download happens at normal speed.
When I restart in Windows XP, I can surf the net just fine and install updates and check mail.
I have opened Network Preferences on the iBook and iMac to compare, and they both have almost identical settings. Maybe this is where I need to look for the problem.
What can I do to solve this problem?

I have very little experience with wireless authentication protocols, so my answer is intentionally vague - hopefully someone can get you a better answer.
TTLS and PEAP are different authentication protocols used with wireless connections.
The first thing I'd try is to get to the network settings and try to change the iMac to use TTLS for authentication.
The WINS servers are kind of a strange happening...those settings will typically come from a DHCP server, is it possible that your iMac is holding on to DHCP settings from a different segment of the network you're on - have you tried renewing the DHCP lease (probably won;t help, but, you can try)

  • Establish IP from DHCP but no Internet or Extremely Slow

Synopsis: Net Macmin, New Ethernet Cat 6 cable (approx. 90 ft), DSL Comtrend Router.  IP Connects, slow to no internet.
Added a 90' cable and ends across store basement from front PC to router in rear of business.  Standard non-crossover Cat 6 cable properly crimped.  Get IP Address from DHCP on front MacMini but internet is extremely slow.  I re-ran the cable away from parallel to power conduit, still extremely slow.  The light on the port which this cable is plugged in flashes at high rate with no pause, unlike three other connected to router.
Front MacMini works fine over wifi, but retail software recommended ethernet connection to ensure reliability should interference occur over wifi.  When I'm testing the Ethernet I do shut off the wifi and have, since started testing, changed the service order so wifi is second chosen to ensure tesitng with ethernet is accurate when wifi is on.
When you try to load a webpage (I used google) through safari it loads 25% of the load bar and stops until it times out a few second later.  Used network utility to verify connection to goolge, it took a few seconds longer than wifi but was able to ping google.  I don't own a ethernet tester and would rather not buy one for one project.
Based on the ability to connect with IP address tells me the cable is able to talk back and forth with the router, correct?  I've read a lot about ethernet port issues, how common is this, what else could be causing the problem?
Internet Source: MyFairPoint DSL for Business
Network Hardware: Comtrend AR-5381u DSL Router
Other Hardware on Router: Second MacMini, Dell Tower, Color HP LaserJet
Thank you to whomever can help and everyone that lends feedback!

My plan is to bring my MBP to the shop later this week to test this out.  I wanted to put this out there to see if any other troubleshooting ideas were brought up.  Thanks for the input!

  • Reset won't work!Trying to fix inernet connection: extremely slow to partial download only.

Have old iOs 106.8. Connection to internet was extremely slow, so, stupidly, updated Firefox to current iteration. Now nearly impossible. Connections are incredibly slow or incomplete. So - tried to Reset Firefox. THAT won't work. Keep getting "This is embarrassing"message re unable to load tabs, etc. and to close open windows. So I do. The only windows are Mozilla's, btw. Keep getting same thing. Round and round and round, etc.

There are several thing for you to check out.

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set
to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your
updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow
    Firefox to connect to the Internet again;
    * Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version)
    * Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs, then add it back. For detailed instructions, see

  • Computer to Computer connection extremely slow

Hello, I am having the following problem. I set up a computer to computer network (Create Network...), with all the right sharing services open, no firewall. With one PB 15, I have this consistent behavior: when I log onto another machine (via "My Network" -- oh, what a bad name, that reminds me...I can't say), or another machine connects to it, the connection extremely slow. So transfering files can take forever. Furthermore, in most of the cases the only available protocol that is offered is FTP, not Appleshare. In most cases too, the connection is interrupted half-way.
Any suggestions? I tried all what I could think of. All machines run on 10.4.2, they all have Airport Extreme cards, updated with the latest software.
    Best to you all,
    l.

Try changing the advanced wireless settings.
Open the setup page of the router.
Go to wireless tab and click on advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change the beacon Interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2307. Save the settings. Go to setup tab and reduce the MTU size to 1365. Save the settings and power cycle the router. Now try on the wireless computer.
How many wireless computers do you have?
The speed is slow only on one wireless computer or on all the wireless computers?
You don't need to downgrade the Firmware on the router.
Download the latest firmware from the Linksys website and upgrade it on the router.
After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure the router.

  • "Network disabled because Internet connection is slow"

I have both a Samsung Galaxy S3 and a new Samsung Tab 3.   After a recent software upgrade, I was having connectivity issues to wireless routers.   The message I got when connecting to a secure wireless network was "Network disabled because Internet connection is slow".   I determined that I had no issues with either my phone or tablet on either an unsecure router (WiFi hotspot), or with any older router that broadcast WPA2 personal with either aes OR tkip security.   I do have a problem with connecting to any new router that broadcasts BOTH aes and tkip at the same time.   When I change the routers under my control to broadcast only aes or tkip, then I can immediately connect both my phone and tablet to the router.   There are obviously a lot of routers over which I have no control, so this needs to be fixed.  I am pretty sure that there is a problem with the latest Android software upgrade in this regard

I am having the same problem with my Galaxy 3S since the upgrade. Have searched for settings, etc. but haven't found anything I can control. My home network is getting 54.4 down and 5.7 up! Have had this issue nearly everywhere I am connected.
I think it needs a fix - noticed today that Verizon has doubled my DATA for free. May need it if this continues.

Could the slow internet connection be due to license limitations? Or is there something wrong with my configuration?
Please see the configuration and help.

I have re-configured the ASA 5505 yesterday and so far it's working fine. I am not sure if the problem will re-appear later on. Anyways here is my sh tech-support

  • Processing speed of my MacBook is extremely slow when opening applications, whether Mail, Safari or MSOffice

    Problem description:
The processing speed of any function is extremely slow - such as opening Mail, Safari, clicking on a page within Safari, switching to MS Word, adding a window in Safari, loading a page from Safari.  I get the spinning wheel most of the time before the action is completed. All other Macs which are newer in my home WiFi network operate just fine. I have done a top level (novice) check for malware, and haven’t found anything.  Any help you can suggest would be truly appreciated! Thank you!

Before you do anything do you have a current backup? If not make one.
I don't see any of the usual software suspects associated with slow downs. You don't need the Seagate software, you should uninstall that.
Reset the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support  and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
You only have 2GB of ram and could upgrade to 8GB, but Snow Leopard should run ok in 2GB.....not great but ok.
Start up in Safe Mode OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support be paitient as it will take awhile to start as it checks and tries to repair any problems with the file system. Once it's completely started up you can restart normally.
Insert your Snow Leopard disc and restart while holding the C key. Run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive and permissions. While in Disk Utility check the SMART status of the hard drive, anything other than Verified indicates a problem with the hard drive.
Again, you only have 2GB of ram.....try restarting your Macbook every day.....it's been running for almost a week now.

  • Internet connection suddenly slow for iMac but OK for iPad and iPod

A few days ago the  WIFI internet connection on my iMac suddenly became so slow as to be unusable. However my iPad and iPod Touch on the same network still connect as normal. I have tried everything I can think of together with some ideas posted on various forums, including the following:
Rebooting and reformating the router - a Netgear DG834G v2
Connecting the iMac to the router via ethernet cable
Trying different channels on the wireless network
Altering the physical position of the router
Using Disk Utility to repair the hard drive on the iMac
Using Disk Utility to repair permissions on the iMac
Disconnecting the two external hard drives (one used for Time Machine) in case they were affecting performance
Running anti-virus software on the iMac and deleting any infected files
    Disabling the anti-virus software
Deleting the network location on iMac and creating a new one
    Trying different DNS servers including 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220 and 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4
Removing Skype from the iMac - the application my daughter was using when the connection suddenly became slow
Trying to browse in both Safari and Firefox
    Resetting caches on the iMac
Rebooting the iMac after trying all the above
    Swearing at the computer
    Pulling my hair out!
None of these have made any difference. Sometimes when I reboot the iMac the first page I browse to loads reasonably quickly but then it immediately slows to a crawl again. The iPad is still connecting perfectly so I don't think it's an issue with the router.
The iMac is a 24-inch 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Running OS X 10.7.5
The hard drive has a capacity of 320 GB with 62 GB free.
I'm at my wits' end trying to sort this out and don't know what else to try.
    PLEASE HELP!

    Hi BDAqua,
In Disk Utility the disk is listed as S.M.A.R.T. Verified and comes up with no errors when checked.
Activity Monitor: with no other applications open Activity Monitor itself is using the greatest percentage of the CPU at approx 3%. Opening Safari and trying to load a web page initially used about 20% but immediately dropped back to less than 1%.
Whilst trying to open the web page I noticed on the Network tab that the Data received/sec is generally between 0-20 bytes/sec, sometimes jumps to a couple of hundred bytes/sec and very occasionally peaks at about 1,000 bytes/sec. Data sent/sec is generally mirroring data received.
Free RAM is at 2.5 GB and free disk space is just short of 63 GB (out of a total capacity of 320GB).
In Console I am getting the following messages:
usbmuxd: AMDeviceConnect (thread 0x100781000): could not connect to lockdown port (62078) on device 6 - d81bda1a752c658f30b839f53ca2fdb6a55f4816: 0xe8000084
usbmuxd: _AMDevicePreflightWorker (thread 0x100781000): Pair worker could not connect to lockdownd on device 6: 0xe8000084
    com.apple.usbmuxd: stopping
    com.apple.usbmuxd: usbmuxd-296.4 on Dec 21 2012 at 16:11:14, running 64 bit
In the System Memory tab of Activity Monitor - Page outs : 0 bytes (0 bytes/sec)
Thanks for your help. It's really appreciated. By the way, it's taking me forever to type all this on my iPad!

  • I receive the error, "No Internet Connection" and my Adobe Creative applications are crashing on a regular basis.

I keep getting the same errors with the damn Creative Cloud application on my Windows 7 machine, which IS connected to a LAN and IS actively connected to the internet at the time the error routinely appears in the midst of tasks.  I have checked root certificates, manually checked my hosts file and run the tests outlined above to both Adobe addresses.
In fact, the error kept occuring while I was on an over 3-1/2 hour call with a very through and nice representative from Adobe who had remote screen access at the time (through Adobe connect) and could see the error repeatedly occuring!
Her comment, "This just happens sometimes with this application and there's not a patch for it yet",  The problem I was having with Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC was so severe that I had to do a SYSTEM RESTORE which then started  affecting other Adobe applications because Windows had erased part of the programs (or all of some programs) but Adobe's software saw them as still installed, that she had me uninstall ALL Adobe Creative Cloud applications using the Adobe Cleaner Tool and reinstall everyting from SCRATCH. She and I had tried numerous other ways to repair the problems I was having with updates not installing correctly AND constant program freezing, etc. before this taking this extreme step.
I'm a professional programmer / software / web designer, so I had tried for hours correct the issues the previous night and had tried once overnight to reach someone in Adobe support only to be told of over an hour wait time by the automation and not offered a callback.
Anyway, despite her best assistance this afternoon (and double confirmation that everything tested correctly), it has taken, so far, well over six hours to reinstall only a portion of what I need for my work and on a deadline because the application keeps reporting "No Internet Connection" and I have programs cued to install unattended.  I am now way behind schedule on some design projects which MUST BE COMPLETED by deadline and require Adobe's software to be installed and function correctly.
Adding to this, Windows Explorer has repeatedly crashed after installing the damn Creative Cloud application and works normally when it's removed and "cleaned" ... and I've seen so many problems with the install system, etc. that I have to wonder what in the hell the company was thinking when this approach was launched?
I generally have liked -- and indeed loved -- some of Adobe's products in the past, but the recent experience has certainly been costly in time and disappointing.
Many other software manufacters integrate suites, perform updates and confirm licenses without such a buggy, time intensive and unreliable process -- including my own company.
Aside from complaining at this point, I wish somebody from Adobe would provide alternative install methods and / or a fullproof fix for this bug and some of the other installation bugs many of us experience.  Any thoughts, advice, knowing that not only I -- but also the Adobe Support Staff Person accessing my computer LIVE -- tried the various "fixes"?

Branching this to a new discussion as the previous discussion was related to the inability to connect and download the installation software.
Rob it does sound like you are facing some connection and stability difficulties.  Do you manage your network youself?  I am a bit concerned by the fact that you have stated that you periodically loose Internet connection while completing certain tasks.  Does this affect your ability to utilize the already installed Adobe Creative software?
I would also recommend reviewing your installation logs to determine if any errors occured during the installation process.  Please see Troubleshoot install issues with log files | CC - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/troubleshoot-install-logs-cc.html for information on how to locate and interpret your installation log files.  Please feel free to post any specific errors you discover to this discussion thread.

  • Adobe Photoshop CC2014 internet connection very slow

    Hi,
I'm developing an Adobe Photoshop HTML5 (website) extension. This is working fine in Photoshop CC, but is very slow in CC2014.
Today I've installed an update for Photoshop CC2014 and I was presented with an 'introduction' screen, loaded from the web.
This had the same slowness, indicating my extension is not at fault.
The regular functionality of Photoshop has a normal speed, and I'm working on a recent computer with Win 7 64bit.
I've recorded a video showing how slow it really is (and proof that my internet connection has sufficient speed)
    http://videobam.com/gmNun
    How can I solve this?
    Thanks!
    Sam

  • 1415 fnw printer wireless connection extremely slow or not working with OS X, works with windows

The wireless connection to the printer is either extremely slow or not working at all on OS X Yosemite.  It shows up in the list of printers in Bonjour in Safari, and I can connect to parts of the web interface if I wait a very long time.  However, I cannot add the printer as a new printer in System Preferences even though the printer shows up.
I have upgraded to the latest firmware.  The WiFi indicator on the printer is on, "green", and it has a reserved IP showing up in my router (ComCast).  It seems that Windows machines can printer to the printer wirelessly without a problem.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hello @sscotti,
I would like to assist you today with installing your wireless HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color Multifunction Printer on your Mac OS X 10.10 Computer. Now you indicate in your post that this printer works fine with Windows computers, and you are able to 'see' the Bonjour printer on your Mac. Therefore, the issue that you are experiencing is not network related. Rather, I do believe that you are experiencing a driver conflict on your Mac OS X 10.10 computer. Can I please have you run the steps below to resolve this issue.
Step 1: Uninstall Drivers and Software:
First, I'm going to have you 'clean up' your Mac OS X 10.10 computer to verify that any trace of your Laserjet printer is gone so we have a nice clean slate to work with. Please click here and when the website opens select the drop down for 'Mac OS X v10.6, OS X v10.7, OS X v10.8, and OS X v10.9' as the steps are the same for Mac OS X 10.10. Run the appropriate uninstall steps for the method in which you originally tried to install your printer: Apple Updates, or the HP Driver download.
Once the uninstall is complete, please proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Verify and Repair your Disk Permissions on the Mac:
Open Macintosh HD and go to Applications
    Go to the Utilities Folder
    Open the Disk Utility
Select the Hard Drive volume you are using (usually on the left)
    Select Verify Disk Permissions
Once that process is done, select Repair Disk Permissions
Step 3: Check for Apple Updates:
    Go to Apple
    Select System Preferences
    Select Software Update
    Click Update Now
    Install your available updates
    Restart your computer
Step 4: Reinstall your Software and Drivers:
Please click here to download the appropriate Mac OS X 10.10 drivers for your HP Laserjet printer.
Once the website opens select the 'download' button on the top left
Once the download has completed, please follow the onscreen steps to reinstall your printer.
Once the reinstall is complete, test the print and scan functions to ensure that your printer is functioning as per normal.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. Should you still be experiencing issues there are additional steps I can have you run through. I look forward to hearing from you. Good luck!

  • Internet suddenly extremely slow on windows 7 partition.

    Hello all,
Here is my situation: I am connected to the internet via ethernet, Im on a current generation iMac, and Im running windows 7 through bootcamp. About an hour ago, I logged in on my windows partition to find that my internet connection was running unnaturally slow. I tested its speed via an online speed test to find that my ping was an unexpected 479ms, where as, when I tested it on my mac partition, it was a mere 25m. The most peculiar thing about this issue is that im earlier this today (two hours earlier) my connection was perfectly fine.
The other piece of information I have is that on my windows partition, my connection will spontaniously die about 10-30 minutes after launch very freuquently. To restore my connection, about 70% of the time I can simply unplug and replug in the ethernet cable, but if that doesnt work, I have to pull a full restart. I've only noticed this on my windows partition, though I generally game on windows also, so its possible its just my cable, and I dont notice it while on my mac partition.
    Thanks for your time.
    -Will

UPDATE: I just checked and my connection speed has been miraculously restored to a ping of 30ms. Though if anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening, Id like to hear them in case this happens again.

  • Local mac-to-mac transfers goes through the internet connection (very slow)

Transfering files from my iMac to my MacBook Air (or the opposite way) over my local Time Capsule wireless network is extremely slow. I connect to my MacBook Air using my local username account on that machine (which is the same as on the iMac). When I click on the connected MacBook Air again (under shared in Finder’s left column) it says I'm connected as [email protected] (my MobileMe address). Transfers then goes with around 50KB/s which is the same as my outbound capacity on my internet connection. If I disconnect the internet from the Time Capsule I get transfers around 2.2MB/s.
I can’t actually log in as a local user on my other local machine. It goes through the internet no matter how I log in. Back To My Mac is even turned off on both machine.
    How can I fix this?

You actually are close enough to their 3meg down that you can't complain. 2.8meg down and 700kb up is fine, unless it's supposed to be their FIOS that is.
Sounds like it is the site(s) that are slow, like these boards at times.

  • Internet connection (sometimes) slow to come back after wake up

    Hi all,
I started having a strange problem few days ago. First time it happened my husband gave the iBook back to me after using it, and I logged into my user account - and internet connection was gone. I checked the airport settings, the bars were there - went and checked internet connection from the other computer and it was ok. Rebooted, twice, fiddled with the internet connections - and suddenly, without changing anything, the connection was back.
So I though it was weird, but since my iBook has been fine since I got it 7 months ago I didn't think more of it. Then it happens again - this time I opened it up from sleep, and again no internet connection, couldn't even contact the router although bars were there and it claimed that it was connected to the network. This time I didn't even change the settings, but just looked at them, and after 5 minutes or so the connection came back. Then it happened again, same symptoms and same solution - wait for 5 minutes and it will sort itself out. But of course it doesn't happen every time - yesterday it was fine.
Anyone has any ideas what's going on, and possibly even solve the issue?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    12" iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi.
Sorry that the simple fix doesn't do it. There are other things you can try, since WiFi can be cranky in many ways. First, are you running an Airport base station or some other wireless router? If it is "other", then you might try changing the broadcast channel on it. WiFi operates on 11 different channels in the 2.4 MHz band, and you might get more reliable connections on a different channel.
The Airport base station is smart enough to switch itself to the best channel, but you may have to do your own adjustments with other routers. Most use channel 6 by default; if you are in a neighborhood with lots of other WiFi access points around all running on channel 6, you can get significant interference. Try switching to channel 1 or channel 11. Other devices in the 2.4MHz band can also be a problem: garage door openers, cordless phones, or baby monitors.
Note your own router could have strong signal, but it would be fighting all the other signals coming in. If you are in an apartment building or in a block of houses fairly close together, such noise could be an issue. My neighbor was having WiFi connection outages, and it turned out that he had five detectable signals from his neighbors, all but one running on channel 6 along with him (I was on channel 3).
The location of your router can also be important. According to experts on the web, it is better to have your base station higher than your iBook. My neighbor had another strike against him when he put his base station into the basement while he tried to work in the bedroom above with a laptop.
Anyway, there are many things that can go wrong. You may indeed have a hardware problem, but let's rule some more easily fixable problems first.
    Good luck.

  • Internet connection too slow, is there a way to speed up the itouch?

So I can connect to Facetime, but all I see is a picture of a person and then the Itouch freezes and shuts down. I think it is because my internet connection is too slow, because it only doesn't work in my apartment (it works at places with quicker connections).
The question is, is there currently a fix to this problem (I can't be the only one who has it)? It all works, just freezes after connecting and showing the picture of the person I'm talking to then disconnects. Is there a way to make this work?
I'm at college and the only reason I got the 4g from my parents is 'cause they wanted me to help my little bro with homework back home... but if Facetime doesn't work at college then I should sell mine and go with a cheaper, earlier generation. Thanks!

By what type of security I mean, WEP (not preferred), WPA, WPAs. I would go to the support page for you router on the manufacturer's sit to see if an update to the firmware is available. You also have to enter the setup for the router to determine the installed version of the firmware. Not infrequently a firmware update fixes problems since that is one purpose of the updates.
