Internet connection puzzle
I have a G5 and Powerbook G4 that connect to the internet via an Airport Extreme base station. They both share a Brother laser printer via the Airport, as well.
Twice in the last two months, the G5 internet connection simply has failed (and the printer would not function.) The Powerbook as able to access the internet, and print, so the problem seemed to be with the G5. I ran Diskwarrior on the G5 but still it would not connect to the internet or print.
So I removed the ethernet cable from the Airport base station and ran it directly from the modem to the G5 -- and the G5 connected to the internet but, of course, would not print.
Then I reconnected the ethernet cable from the modem back to the Airport base station (its original setup) and, viola, the G5 functioned normally -- both internet and print.
What could be going on here?

Now I dont know about a work around for the framework issue. But in regards to your OS. You dont need to downgrade, you can use ANY providers os 5.0 for your device as long as you delete the VENDOR.XML file from your computer.
If your using a PC, the location of the vendor file will be here,
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader
so you can go here and download any carriers OS for that device.
once you have deleted the file, us the loader.exe to install

Connected but can't connect to internet? puzzling
After hours on the phone with support, I was left with a laptop that said wireless network connected yet I couldn't connect to a website. I took back first router and I am trying another. Help please?

I've had some issues with our Internet service using Airport Extreme and did some testing suggested by our Internet provider. Now I seem to be having some things that don't work right.
I am, of course, on-line. However, when I go to Internet Connect, the information shown is AirPort Power: On, Network: Not Available, Signal level is Zero, Base Station ID: Not Available and a check mark is in Show AirPort status in menu bar.
The AirPort Status on the menu bar shows that I am connected to our home network.
Why would Internet Connect not recognize our network, which is working?

I went to the Network control panel on my MBP and under Advanced TCP/IP I gave 192.168.1.1 as address and 255.255.255.0 as subnet mask (the 225 as you suggest was not accepted).
On the iPhone 192.168.1.2 and as router 192.168.1.1. No luck.
By the way, my original question is still open. Why does it work sometimes and at other times not? After a reboot of my MBP it works. But if I put the MBP to work and/or disconnect and reconnect the 3G connection it does not work anymore.
Yes, the 3G SIM in my iPhone is a fall-back option which works. But then I have to fiddle with getting the microSIM out of the microSIM adapter and in the iPhone, waiting for a connection and meanwhile I can't work on my MBP. It is so much easier to just load my newspaper over wifi from my MBP. -
Attempting to Connect to Network Shuts down Internet Connection
I am setting up a G4 400 MgH Mac with AGP graphics to get on a network of computers. This originally came from a college where it was on a network running OSX and OS9.1, and I have added a 100 GB hard drive on which I installed OX10.4, and upgraded to OS9.2.2.
It is very odd, as when I try to connect to the network through the ethernet connection in starting up in OS9.2.2, it will connect to the other computers and to the internet without problems, and does not affect the internet connection. However, when I start up in OSX, all the other computers on the network lose their internet connection immediately when this computer boots up into OSX. I can, however, connect to the other computers on the network, but cannot connect to the internet. I am puzzled as to what resource in OSX must be damaged to cause such a problem. I have tried reloading Tiger, and have used Disk Warrior, but the problem is the same.
I would welcome any thoughts on how to fix this so we can get this added to the graphics network at our school.
G4/1GHz, 7600 w/G3/500 MHz , G4/733 MHz Server Mac OS X (10.4.7)Only thing I can think of is that the AGP in OSX must have a Network setting that is grabbing an already used IP, or perhaps even the IP of the Router, or perhaps is set to Share the Internet connection.
I'd first off uncheck all ports in Network Port Configurations, reboot, for a try check on Ethernet in Port congigs again.
2nd, I'd try giving the AGP a Manual IP above the possible range handed out by the router.
3rd, I'd make a new User and see if the same thing happens.
If that doesn't work, I'd try trashing these and rebooting...

Thunderbolt Gigabit ethernet adapter is recognized - but no internet connection
Hello.
I just got a new macbook air. I need to connect it to the internet via ethernet cable - thus i purchased the Thunderbolt gigabit ethernet adapter, plugged it in - and nothing happened.
The cable is being recognized, in the networks section it shows the IP-address etc. and the little dot next to "ethernet thunderbolt" is green. but when I open safari, there is no internet connection.
Why is this? I have updated all available software. I also tried downloading the Thunderbolt Firmware Update (1.2.1) but I'm told it is not supported (i.e. it isn't installed).
Who can help me? I'm quite puzzled and don't seem to be able to find this same problem anywhere on the net.

enelIs that quite lousy and am I a fool? ;-) I have turned it off. It didn't do the trick, I had already tried that numerous times.
BUT this time I also switched off the DSLmodem (an idea I hadn't had up until now, strangely enough - I had it only now while actually counting to 15) and then I ran the assistant again and the network was then finally being recognized for the first time.
Then I had to once more turn the router off and finally all the little status buttons turned green.

Internet connection slowdown on Macbook
Over the past few weeks, my internet connection on my Macbook (new 2/08) has become extremely slow, often giving time-out error messages on Safari & Firefox. Previous to this, it was the expected DSL high speed throughput. I have a Cat 5 wired network, and other computers on the network don't have the problem. I've changed the hub to the network on my Mac; still slow. I've repaired privileges and observed CPU, memory, disk and network graphs on the Activity Monitor during internet access without seeing anything that smacks of the problem. Slow at startup and 4 hours later. The Mac acts the same when I'm on the road on a hotel's WiFi, etc. A PC laptop with XP and the same ISP login has no slowdown on my network, so I'm convinced the problem is in the Macbook Anyone experienced this and can give me help? I'm at the point that I'm going to have to quit using my Macbook.
My slow down in my home office is on a wired Cat5 connection, not wireless. Yesterday I had to work from corp offices, and connected both wired and wireless. Both were near instant download from the internet on all the corporate stuff and on my personal email, and web sites I tested which would seem to indicate there's nothing wrong on my Macbook. Yet, when I got home and tested again on my home network, my Mac had the old slow problem, but all the PCs with MSIE were OK. It's a puzzle. Has anyone figured this one out, or am I hallucinating.

WiFi Alert: No Internet connection
My mini (early 2009, OSX 10.9.5) stopped connecting to the Internet today (was ok for hours but suddenly not) but could still connect to either of my WiFi base stations and I could transfer files over the WiFi LAN to other Macs, thru either WiFi base. WiFi menu bar drop down said: "Alert: No Internet connection…". I restarted and ran Wireless Diagnostic app but no success.
The only way I got my mini connected was to configure IPs manually in the Advanced button's TCP/IP tab, replicating the IPs from my MacBook "Using DHCP" (late 2006, OSX 10.7.5) that sits beside my mini connected to the Internet using the same WiFi base stations, so the problem is with my mini.
How do I fix the mini so it connects "Using DHCP"? I'm puzzled that this problem suddenly came about while doing my typical online email and browsing. That implies a hardware problem, right?
One other possibly related anomaly is that my mini can't "remember" my Airport base network even tho it is entered as the top Preferred Network in Wi-Fi System Preferences with WPA2 Personal Security enabled (my other base has WPA Personal enabled and the mini remembers it). Yes, "Remember networks…joined" is selected.
FYI, one WiFi base is Apple Airport Extreme circa 2008 running 7.6.4 connected via Ethernet to the other, a Thomson Gateway supplied by my service provider. For over a year this mini has connected to the Internet thru these base stations "Using DHCP", however, occasionally I have had this Internet connection problem but it usually goes away after a few minutes….now it seems permanent.The wavelength at these frequencies (2.450Ghz) is 122mm, so a full gain (full wave) antenna would be that long (+ a bit for connection) 3 to 5 are needed for full spread spectrum use and even more are needed for 5Ghz operation (different length) So antennae that are too short are used, usually quarter wave + some amplification for extra noise
It is as you can tell quite a compromise, full wave antennae have the most gain but are the biggest, small ones fit neatly in the little gadgets but the laws of physics have no style.
And at any given moment almost all of the Rx power is wasted covering the area where a receiver 'might' be -

Should it be possible to tell from the Event Logs if the hub itself is restarting, i.e. does Broadband:Internet connection time indicate just length of time the hub was connected to the exchange? When I did switch the hub off and on again and then looked at the logs the logs were cleared and started very briefly with a few entries dated 1 Jan. Is this the only way one can tell that the hub has actually restarted?
Also how long are logs kept for? Today my logs only went back as far as about midnight - just tried to confirm that, but lo and behold, logs are showing 1 Jan again, starting with:

The logs then continue as normal(ish). This happened while I was out shopping.
I am still wondering if my HH2 is the culprit for the very frequent disconnects, but don't know how to verify that. I did try looking for a replacement power supply online, but the one I need is no longer available in the BT shop - BT HH2 Type A 15v/1.2A, item code 044023. It also seems rather rare on other internet shopping sites, most offer a 12V one. I haven't as yet tried a different cable between hub and filter. Do I need something special there too?
Do I just hang on in the hope that things settle down or should I finally contact BT and aks for help? If the hub is indeed the culprit will I be charged? If so perhaps I should just shell out for a new hub and see if that sorts things out.
Like so many others on this forum and elsewhere getting more than a little cheesed off with a service I'm paying for but not getting. -
Time Machine stuck on preparing backup with in turn breaks internet connectivity.
Hi all!
I recently started using Time Machine (on a 1TB USB 2.0 external hard drive) on my MBP (Early 2011, 13") and I've noticed that it constantly gets stuck on the "Preparing backup" stage, which can only be unstuck by pulling the drive or hard rebooting the computer (otherwise it gets stuck on the gray post-logout screen forever). What's more interesting is that while Time Machine is stuck I am unable to use any of my browsers because DNS resolution fails outright (although I can still visit IP addresses and perform manually DNS queries and start SSH sessions in Terminal.app). If I pull the drive or reboot the computer, my internet connectivity is restored. As a relatively new Mac user this behavior is quite puzzling; has anybody else encountered this type of problem?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including your login items.
Launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) -
BEFW11S4 instable internet connection

Up until a few days ago my internet worked fine. But then I had to reset my router and now I have an annoying problem. Every few minutes the I loose internet connection for a few seconds.
This is not too annoying with surfing on the web, but for example downloads and instant messaging are almost impossible. I have this problem on every computer in the network, and before the reset it was fine.
I upgraded to the latest firmware (1.50 I believe) and I don't think my ISP (UPC netherlands, former chello) is supposed to have some extra settings - it should just work. I already tried turning the modem and the router off, several times, but without succes. After this action it worked like it used to for about 30 - 60 minutes but then slowly starts increasing in instability again.
I am really puzzled by this, could my router be damaged/broke or is there a solution to this problem?

PS: I now tried the easylink connect to see if it finds any problems but it says my router is not supported. So all of a sudden it's not a linksys router anymore? This is very frustrating..

I would suggest first of all observe connection from your modem directly and see if that works fine. If it doesn't then you might need to do some settings on your modem also.
You can also try doing these settings:
Connect computer to router directly.
Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser's address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name.
Here enable MTU and set size to 1350.
Go to security tab, and disable block anonymous internet requests.
Go to wireless tab and change wireless network name to anything other that linksys
Change channel to 11.
Go to advanced wireless settings and here change beacon interval to 50, fragmentation threshold to 2306, and RTS threshold to 2307.
After this power cycle router and modem and observe connection.
It should be improved. -
Mysterious Internet Connection - Where is it coming from?
My imac connected to the internet at what seemed to be a high speed connection. This puzzled me because I thought I only had dial-up from AOL. Using the phone line, the dial up connection is switched back and forth between two computers - a gateway laptop and an imac G5, OS X (10.4.11). Safari was opened on a hard drive partition that did not have the AOL software installed. Safari opened quickly to the Apple home page unusualy fast. In order to try and understand why the internet speed was faster than usual, I connected to the internet on a different hard drive partition which did have the AOL software installed. The dial-up slowness then returned.
After using the AOL dial-up connection, the unusually fast connection speed was lost and Safari will not connect to the internet anymore at the faster speed.
What type of high speed connection did I inadvertantly use?
The phone company said we were not signed up for a DSL connection.
Did my imac connect somehow to a wireless internet connection through my airport card? A friend recently used a Blackberry in the same room near the imac. Was the imac picking up the Blackberry's internet connection?eaglewhite wrote:

Do you see black arcs in the AirPort menu bar item? If so, then you're connected via AirPort (Wi-Fi). If you pull down that menu item, you'll see the name of the network you're using. -
Wireless Internet connectivity lost after sleep
I've got a problem where I keep losing my wireless network connection after going to sleep.
The situation is that I'm connecting to my university's secure network. I have the credentials saved on my MacBook. When I need to go and leave my computer on my desk, I go back to the login window, and close the lid. When I come back and open it again, I'm instantly asked for the network password, at the login screen. Regardless of whether I enter it or dismiss the dialog, I'm unable to get a connection automatically after I resume my user session. There's an exclamation mark on the network icon and it says that there's no internet connection on the menu. When I click on this warning, I'm asked to repair the network connection and re-connect to it. This works, but I'd much rather that this be done automatically. Is there no way for me to resume connectivity after waking up my MacBook without having to manually re-connect?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.The problem's still happening in 10.6.2. I lose my Internet connection when I go back to the login window, then close the lid on my MacBook so that it goes to sleep. When I awake it, and log back in, I'm shown as being connected to the network, but not to the Internet. I have to manually re-connect.
When I just close the lid without exiting to the login window, it appears that my Internet connection is re-established automatically, though, on re-awakening. I'm puzzled as to why this is occurring. It looks like a bug to me. -
Internet Connection Became Slow after Introduction of Cisco ASA 5505 to the Network

New FIOS customer with dropped VOIP calls and Internet connection
I am a new FIOS customer. Got my 50/25 connection a week ago, switching from a TWC 6/1 connection. Ever since the new connection, I've had numerous issues.
My VOIP (Ooma) connection constantly drops and re-connects during conversations
I've had random Internet connection losses, which picks up again after a few minutes
My home alarm starts chirping every once in a while
I've contacted Verizon several times due to these problems and have received varying answers with no resolution of the problem.
The first time I spoke with support, the tech logged into my router and changed the WiFi channel saying that would fix the problem. It didn’t.
The second time I contacted them, the tech ran a bunch of diagnostics and said everything looked fine so it must be an IP address conflict with my devices, because I had a couple devices using static IP addresses. He said everythinf should be DHCP and the last two digits could not be higher than 99 (192.168.1.99). He said FIOS does not support 3-digit numbers at the end.
So I changed all my devices to DHCP and ran some online VOIP tests. It showed a packet loss of 2-5% and MOS score of 1 (which is bad). I was still getting dropped connections, so I disconnected all devices and connected just one computer to the router and tested again. I was still getting packet loss.
Then I called support a third time, this time the tech said there were no 2-digit IP restrictions and that he was detecting there was no UPS baterry backup for the ONT which was probably causing the problem, so he dispatched a field tech to my house.
Today the field tech came (same guy as before), he took one look at the box and said it was too close to my Electric meter and the RF from the meter was causing interference to the FIOS connection and resulting in dropped connection.
He moved the ONT to another location and said that should fix it.
Well, I'm still seeing packet loss and low MOS score when I run the VOIP test.
I don't know how much of what the techs are saying is true and how much is made up stuff.
Has anyone had similar issues and have thoughts on solutions or likely causes for dropped VOIP calls and connections? Could RF be causing this?
I thought going from a 6/1 Cable connection to a 50/25 FIOS connection would be awesome, but this has turned out to be a nightmare, and I may have to switch back to cable if the problem is not resolved.
I would appreciate any help.
Thanks!Don't know where the packet loss is happening. I ran the VOIP test on myspeed.visualware.com and it shows a packet loss of 2-5% at different times and a MOS score of 1.
The report says MOS should be around 4 for good VOIP calls.
The Verizon tech who came to the house just blamed the electric meter box for RF interference and move the ONT farther away.
My concern is that I'm getting different answers from different techs at Verizon.
Regarding IP addresses. The Router shows a DHCP range from 192.162.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 as available for devices on the network. So, if I need to assign a static IP to a device should I use a number below 99 or above 151?

I can't access my itunes store, it says I don't have an internet connection but I do. I tried updating to the newest version of itunes, turned off my firewall, checked to make sure itunes was allowed in my internet options. what else can i do?
