Internet connection tempermental and slow

Hi,
For about two week now my iMac has been dropping connection quite regularly, or running incredibly slow for a few minutes at a time. It's a problem that exclusively affects my Mac (my mobile and tablet work flawlessly at all times on the same network). When the connection cuts out completely the Wi-Fi menu bar icon remains black, suggesting it's connected even though it isn't.
I can resolve the issue by turning the Wi-Fi off and on, or resetting the router, but the problem will usually come back within 30 minutes. I think the chances of it cutting out are increased when I try doing something network intensive, like downloading a large file or streaming video / watching YouTube. I've tried renewing DHCP lease (whatever that does) and yes, I've tried turning it off and on again. I've ran a wireless diagnostics test if there's anything useful in the file anyone can use.
I'm using a mid 2010 iMac 21" running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10).
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

They will. But given the fact that it is so difficult to reliably reproduce this issue, it is very hard to classify it.
The more people sending in detailed feedback, as in step by step instructions on how to re-create the issue, the easier it will be for Apple to reproduce the issue, in-house. And once they can do that, they can begin to address the issue. And put out a fix.
I am willing to bet my computer that Apple want to fix this issue just as bad as anyone suffering from it ;-)

    Hello,
I have very similar problem. Suddenly Firefox stopped work - It was working few days after ver. 4 update. I was looking everywhere for some solution but nothing worked.
    - uninstalled firewall - did not worked
    - added full exception for Firefox into the firewall - did not worked
    - Firefox reinstall - did not worked
    - Firefox complete reinstall (registry included) - did not worked
    - IPv6 diseabling - did not worked
    - diferent proxy options (no proxy, system proxy, autodetect proxy) - did not worked
    - new firefox profile - did not worked
    - complete coockies, history... deleted - did not worked
    - there is only one solution which partly works - I have used public proxy addresses for Firefox but the ping is (750ms), down/up (0.8MB/0.2MB originaly (10MB/2MB) and yes I have tried different proxy server from different countries from my included.
    - IE is working perfectly and without proxy
    - other companies browser - did not worked too
    - only IE is working
    - I have used three different malware, trojans, spyware, anti-virus programs and nothing
It seems to me as hopeless situation or very clever move from Microsoft, I am forced to use IE - at least this works
    Any ideas, solutions?

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here:   http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

ever since I installed Lion my internet connection comes and goes....have reported this to Apple Care who have helped me reset my connection but it is still happening...cant believe it is a fault of the ISP as my Iphone does not have this problem, nor does my PC laptop...is this a fault in the new system?

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • Internet connection comes and goes

My Macbook is hooked up to my husbands wireless network and used to go through the Time Machine but he had problems with it so he took it off the network. Now my internet connection comes and goes every 5 to 10 minutes - it loses connection and then finds it again.
My husband (the computer expert in the house) doesnt really care so it is up to me to figure out what is wrong. Can anyone help me?

I think by "Time Machine" you actually mean "Time Capsule"--TC is the hardware, TM is the software the does the backups to the hardware.
As for your problem: If the Time Capsule is "off the network," as you suggest, how is your husband connecting to the internet? What kind of computer does he have? More information is better here, to help us solve your problem--the wires come into the house and then what?
It kind of sounds like you might be describing "Internet Sharing":

Does any of that look familiar to you?

Thank you Alancito for your reply.  The recent post you suggested was not necessary because another of your suggestions did the trick:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/11503337#11503337  In effect, it seems to have reestablished my connection to my MobileMe account, and my iWeb site now publishes on MobileMe.
My next step will be to transfer my iWeb site to another Personal Web Provider when MobileMe ceases to exist next June.  Any recommendations for a simple PWP?

  • My computer is running sluggish and the internet connection runs very slow. what can I do?

My mac air is running slugiish and my internet connection takes forever to change windows...what can I do?

If the computer is brand new, it may be reviewing (indexing) all you files for search. This will take a few hours to complete.  Otherwise you likely have a program that is running poorly and slowing your system down.
    Open the Fibder
Click the Go menu at the top of the screen
Click on utilities menu item under go
    Open the Activity Monitor
When Activity monitor opens, there will be a lot of data in the window, to make better sense of it click on the column labeled CPU. This will sort entries by how much of your computer's CPU they use. The lower the number the better.
Locate any programs using 80% or more of your CPU. They are the likely culprits of your speed issue.
If the speed issue is only related to surfing the internet, then you more than likely have an issue with WiFi instead. Try moving closer to your wireless router to see if it speeds up.

  • DSL connection spotty and slow after security update

I updated both the latest security patch and firmware for my Intel Mac Mini a few days ago, and since then have had notably slower DSL internet service. Frequent time-outs in locating servers etc. Skype connection is much much worse than before the update(s).
Anyone have similar experience and/or suggestions?
Mac Mini 1.66 Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There are two distinct problems that can occur with internet connections, giving two different symptoms.
If, for example, you click on a link or enter a URL in a browser and it takes ages to start the process of loading the page, but once started it loads reasonably well, the issue is with the DNS lookup. On the other hand, if the browser finds the page and looks ready to start loading it pretty quickly, but then takes ages to render the page, the problem is far more likely to be an issue with data timing out.
In the situation where there is an apparent delay in locating servers, the problem is most likely related to the DNS settings in the system. DNS (Domain Name Service) is the means by which the system translates the addresses we find easy to remember and work with (such as www.yahoo.com) to the numbering system the internet itself uses (such as 69.147.11.210 in the case of yahoo). When you send your system off looking for an internet resource by name such as yahoo.com, it first checks with whatever DNS server you have told it to use, what the IP number is, and if that DNS server is slow to respond, the process of accessing the page/resource will appear to hang, sometimes for many seconds.
You can test is the system has a DNS issue by opening a browser and typing http://69.147.11.210 and hitting enter. This should, after a very brief pause, load the Yahoo home page. If doing it this way gives you a markedly faster page access time than usual, go to your network preference pane and open the ethernet configuration (if using ethernet - the airport for wifi or modem for dialup) and in the DNS servers section, manually enter the DNS server addresses used by your ISP. There are usually two or three and they may be listed in the ISP's help pages on the internet, in the documentation that they sent, or in your router.
Actually any valid DNS server IP addresses will do, so you can actually doa search for DNS server addresses and use any that you find. Bear in mind of course that a DNS server in your own locality, or region will be likely to be quicker to respond than a DNS server on the other side of the world... though not always!
Give that a try if the problem is with the system accessing a page to begin with.
If it's that the page loads very slowly once started, the first thing to do is clear the browser's caches (in safari, try 'reset safari' which sets it back to first-used state), which can often help. After that it may be necessary to delve into the depths of the system's IP configuration since some ISPs don't seem to have particularly Mac-friendly service configurations.

  • Network Configuration Window Freezes When USB NDIS Internet Connection Sharing and Ethernet Port Are Used Simultaneously

    Current Setup:
Asrock Extreme 4 Z77 mobo with built-in Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet.  Windows 8 Pro. Intel i5-3570k (using onboard Intel 4000 HD Graphics).  RAID0- 2 OCZ Vertex 4's.
I will refer to this setup as my tower.
The Ethernet port works fine by itself.  When I use wired tethering with my Android phone (Droid 4 running on 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich), it works fine when nothing is connected into the Ethernet port in the mobo.
The issue arises when I try to connect both simultaneously.  The network configuration window in windows basically freezes and I cannot really navigate it without a ~60 second delay at best.
I would like to be able to accept the internet from my Android via a USB tether and either bridge the connection or use the internet connection sharing service to route traffic through the unused Ethernet port on the mobo (either to another computer/xbox
or more desirably a switch/router to spread to the entire home network).  I have extensively researched the issue of Windows 8 become slow and unresponsive when I attempt to do this and I have not found anyone with the exact problem.  I am able to
do both the MAC bridge miniport (bridge 2 connections) and Internet Connection Sharing though a Windows Vista (home premium) Laptop I have. The difference between the laptop and the tower I am try to do this on is the laptop has a WIFI and Ethernet connection
while the tower only has the on-board Ethernet.
Do I have all the necessary equipment to accomplish this, or do I need to buy a PCIe WIFI card?  If so could I get away with just getting a USB WIFI dongle?
Any help would be very appreciated.

I had the same problem and came here by searching.
Per Rosengren's method solved the problem, but he didn't say how to do it, so I'll try to explain step-by-step for anyone that may venture here.
Open Device Manager (right click on Computer > Manage > on the left side, under System Tools choose Device Manager)
Choose the problematic device in Network Adapters (for me it's called HTC Remote NDIS based device)
Right click on it and choose Update Driver Software...
Click Browse my computer for driver software
Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers
Uncheck the box Show compatible hardware
For the manufacturer, choose Microsoft Corporation
Now you will have two options:
    - Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device
    - Remote NDIS Compatible Device
I chose the second one and it solved the problem, but if it doesn't work you could try the other one. In my case, the driver that was being used was neither of these, but a special driver from Android SDK ADT bundle.
Pick one and click Next. If a dialog comes up, confirm by clicking Yes.
Wait a few seconds for the connection to restart. If it doesn't work, try disabling and reenabling USB tethering on the phone, or reconnect the USB cable.
I should also note that I'm using a custom Android ROM on HTC Wildfire S (unofficial Cyanogenmod). If you have a stock ROM with HTC Sense, maybe this method may not work and you'll need a proprietary HTC driver.

  • AEBS and internet connection errors and dns errors.

    AEBS 7.3.2
It was running fine until I turned on my mybook one day like I had done several times before.
I received an error regarding a disk error with it. I could not find any problems though. But since then my AEBS has been having difficulty connecting to the internet. I can download via bit torrent, but not be able to surf the internet. I restart my internet connection, which involves turning off the power supply and restarting it, and I can surf the internet again. However, I receive a DNS server error, but everything seems to be fine, and I can surf the internet.
If I restart the AEBS it will not allow me to surf the internet, even though it says everything is fine. I can actually manage to go to google and do google searches, cant navigate away from there, but none the less new content. I have managed to download via Itunes and bit torrent but not surf to hot mail.com etc.
I know I can ignore it and the flashing amber light will go away, but that ignores the problem and doesn't fix anything. besides it still says I have an Internet connection error from day one. I dont't know why, and no ones been able to help with that.
    more info:
My isp uses a dynamic IP, so I have to use the automatic dhcp setting.
AEBS uses to go back to green light and automatically resolve the dns error, now not at all.
Please help, this is very frustrating.
    thanks

Bump, and of course I have set the message to ignore, which created a green light and now have 2 unresolved problem and internet works.
Still have the DNS server error, despite manually putting it in.
Still have internet connection error despite having a connection.
If I restart my airport extreme, the DNS message goes away, but does not allow me to access the internet through any web browser, but it works through one of my computers via bit torrent, but nothing else.
If I rest my internet connection I can access the internet, but recieve the DNS error. The internet connection error I have always had, for reasons unknown.
    Is the extreme broken?
I have done a factory reset on the airport and hard reset on the internet complete with the unplugging everything. My connection is stable according to my ISP, and I agree with them.
This seems to be a Airport extreme problem.
