Internet DNS trouble!  Help!

Everything was fine until I bought the new Intel iMac. My ADSL modem with a USB connector works great with my iBook G4, but will not with the iMac. The local ISP said there are no drivers for the Intel Macs, so I'm out of luck.
So... I bought a Zoom model 5654 ADSL X5 modem, which connects via Ethernet. Everything seemed fine.. at first. In fact I am posting this on-line with it.
But about every 5 minutes I loose the DNS. All my web based look-ups fail, and I am stuck for 5 minutes. Then, magically, it comes back! My activity monitor looks like an EKG! This has ben going ever since I bought the modem. I even tried with the iBook G4, and it's the same. Works great for a few minutes, and then the DNS stops, and I have to wait it out!
Interesting, if I am downloading a large file, that will keep working. The download does not stop, showing that the NET is staying connected and just the DNS stops.
Has anyone experienced this?
I am connected to an ADSL (as I have no other option except a 56K modem). Here's some details:
Network control panel set to built-in Ethernet.
TCP/IP: Using DHCP, IP: 10.0.0.5, Subnet: 255.255.255.0, Router: 10.0.0.2
-No DNS Servers or Search Domains
-IPv6: on Auto
PPoE: Off
Appletalk: Inactive
Proxies: None
Ethernet: Auto
- I tried switching the IPv6 to OFF. No effect.
- I tried changing the Ethernet to Manual, 10baseT, half-duplex and full. No effect.
Any ideas?

Thanks for suggestion Tony. I just tried it and no change. It worked for about 10 minutes, and then the DNS failed again.
If I disconnect the modem and re-attach my old USB modem (on my G4 iBook) all is still finbe. It will stay connected and the DNS will function normally.
It's only when I hook up the new Ethernet ADSL modem/router that the DNS fails. Note that the network still stays connected as before, and long downloads continue to download even after the DNS failures.
I also noted that it appears (more testing needed to verify) that once the DNS stops working, if I go into the Network control panel and make any changes, I get the DNS back soon after - much sooner than if I just wait it out. But it still drops out after 10 minutes or so.
And just to be clear, my system is not set to sleep at any time, so it's not related to that either.

  • Adobe Reader 9 in Browser blank when no internet DNS

    Hi Guys,
Since I installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 in our company network we get very slow responses opening PDF's in Internet Explorer 6. It can take up to 10 minutes for a 200 kb PDF te open.
Now I found that the problem is caused by not having internet DNS on the company PC's. The company PC's normally don't need internet DNS, because they goto internet using an ISA proxy server.
Is there a way to configure Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 so that it does not need internet DNS and can still open PDF's in the browser the same way Adobe Acrobat Reader 7 did?
    Greetz,
    John

Our firm creates software for the financial community and is also running into this same issue on our client's networks (banks, asset managers, pension funds, etc). Basically, Acrobat 9.0.0 is doing a DNS request and falling back to NetBIOS name resolution if the destination site is unresolvable. The app then issues hundreds of NetBIOS requests at a rate of 1-2 per second for the next two to three minutes before timing out and allowing a document to be displayed.
Turning off NetBIOS makes this problem go away - but many firms need NetBIOS. Firms running proxies, as John above noted, will also be in trouble with no workaround since the DNS resolution is not proxied.
Why is Reader trying to do local DNS/NetBIOS name resolution of the destination? What is the purpose of this resolution? This is a new behavior which is causing pain at many firms. Does anyone have insight if there is a registry key or setting that can be put into place that diaables name resolution of the destination?
The problem becomes even more severe with software that uses IE Pluggable Protocols (non-http:// or https:// custom protocols that route through another appliation via COM) - the use of these protocols will almost guarantee that the name is not resolvable, and thus preclude the use of Acrobat 9.0.0 Reader.
Any insight from Acrobat Engineers appreciated.

Check the IP address assigned to your iPad (touch the ">" next to your network name in Settings > WiFi). If it starts with 169 then your router has not assigned a valid LAN IP address to your iPad. It might appear to be connected but you will have no success on the internet.
Sometimes restarting your router by temporarily (30 seconds) removing/restoring power to it will solve this problem. If it doesn't check that your router has up-to-date manufacturer's firmware and test your iPad on some other networks to see if it works properly there.

  • Any ideas as to why my iPhone 3GS wouldn't be receiving any messages or voicemails unless I turn my phone off? Also, it isn't able to open any apps that require the internet.. Help??

YOu can try resetting your network or a reboot.  To reboot hold down the home/power button together until you see the apple logo and then release.  Wait for the phone to boot back up,  you won't lose any data.

When i am logged into hotmail, I can't open any of my messages, but i can do it on internet explorer. Help!

    Try two things:
First, try going to the App Store and download any app, paid or free.
Second, if not fixed, try a reset.
    Doing a Reset:
Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears.

  • My first generation iPad is not connecting to the internet! any helpful tips?

my first generation iPad is not connecting to the internet! any helpful tips?

Have you done a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears, ignore the red slider if that appears.
If that does not help, go to Settings and turn WiFi off.  Make sure you are not in AirPlane Mode and turn WiFi back on and see if it shows the wireless networks that are available.

I cannot retrieve my mail when I am not connected to the internet. Please help.

Your mail is housed on the mail server. The device attempts to update, and because you are not connected to the internet, you cannot access it. You need an active data connection to deal with mail.

After upgrade to ios6 iPad does not accept password to wifi, I cannot connect to internet. Pls help me...

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
