Internet Explorer GPP vs GPO

Hi,
I am trying to config IE8 (W7), with GPO and GPP. I have trusted zone in GPO and I want to use GPP for other settings like default webpage.
I loaded the GPP and added a web site as an default web page, but I notes that it was trusted zones in GPP also and they where green.
I could not find a way to disable them, the GPO is on a OU level over the GPP. I gues GPP override the GPO...
I would like to understand how to use GPO vs GPP to set IE settings
/SaiTech

Hi SaiTech,
Thank you for posting here.
As you stated that the GPO is on a OU level over the GPP. I assume that the GPP setting is linked to a sub-OU which is under the GPO linked OU.
Generally speaking, GPOs that are linked to the organizational unit that is highest in the Active Directory hierarchy are processed first, So the GPO that is linked to its child organizational unit (GPP) OU has the highest precedence.
More information at:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc785665(WS.10).aspx
To verify the group policy setting, you can run the command "rsop.msc" to check whether the IE group policy setting applies.
To verify the GPP setting, you can run the command "GPRESULT /H GPReport.html" to check whether the GPP setting applies.
To understand how GPO vs GPP setting, you may refer to the official documentation "Group Policy Preferences Overview"

  • Disable Internet explorer app using GPO

    Hi,
I'm just starting to customize our GPOs for Windows 8.1 as we are starting roll out soon. Regarding that i've been trying to get rid of the app version of IE11 and give the users no choice but to use the desktop version, because of compatibility etc.
I have not found a GPO setting or reg key to do this. Can it be done via GPO?

    Hi,
    @Kate
To quote my previous post: "...confirming GPO settings were applied using gpresult -v and also made changes in local gpedit.msc just to make sure..."
    @Svekke
I can confirm that not only does gpresult show GPO being applied, but alos by starting IE11 desktop, going to settings, programs i can see the option being greyed out and that "Always in internet Explorer on the desktop" is chosen.
    @all
After going through this again (had 2 cups of coffee first) i had one of those "facePalm experiences" when i noticed the second suggested GPO setting from Svekke2k14 about "Open internet explorer tiles on the desktop". This did the trick
The wording and explanation of this GPO setting was a bit awkward to say the least. I expected this to do the opposite of what it actually does, i.e. open the tiles version from the desktop... Doh! Ah well... ;-)
Thanks to both for the assistance.

  • Internet Options greyed out in Internet Explorer 9 because of GPO settings in Windows 2008 AD

Internet Options greyed out in Internet Explorer 9 because of GPO settings in Windows 2008 AD.
I am trying to find out what GPO setting is causing this so I can change I.E. settings at a desktop running Windows 7.
A GPO has I.E. locked down so settings are greyed out for Intranet settings so I can't change Intranet settings.
How do I enable so I can save changes with a GPO?

Classic GPO using Administrative Templates, is designed to do exactly that (disable the UI).
Previously, you could use IEM in preference mode.
Now, you'll need to use GPP, but there are a couple of limitations.
Check the IE10 IEAK documentation (it's useful for understanding what you can do with GPP)

  • Issues with Server 2008 R2 GPO Settings Being Applied To Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7

We are working on a new domain and I'm trying to figure out how to populate the default Home page, Trusted Sites and the Proxy now that Microsoft has removed the IEM from the GPO's.
I have created a standalone policy that only has these items set in the User Configuration Preferences and the settings are not updating for my test user account on the test system.  I see the policy is being applied without any errors.  The only
other GPO that is being applied to this system is the Default Domain Policy and it is at the default settings.
Why would Microsoft take away such a basic and fundamental administrative function?  I'm trying to figure this out before all support ends for the older versions of IE in January, 2016.  I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to get this configured
so I don't have to touch every system.

Hi Karen and thanks for the reply.  I'm having to use my personal Microsoft account as I was unable to reconnect to this one.  The only settings in this group policy that is set are the 3 fields (Home page, Security level for Trusted Sites and
Proxy script under the LAN Settings) under the User Configuration Preferences.   There is nothing configured under the Computer Configuration section.
I have my test computer and user in a Test OU with this policy linked to it.  The only policy being applied to this system through inheritance, is the Default Domain Policy (all default settings).  Attached is the link to the gpreport.html that
    you requested.
I am very aware of making sure there are no other settings in the same as well as other policies that can overwrite the desired settings.  This is why I have created a policy with only these few settings as a test to ensure that they work.  I'd
be grateful if you would review the result file below and could come up with some suggestions that I could try.  Thanks a bunch.

If you're using Group Policy Preferences (GPP), a common mistake for those new to using GPP, is to misunderstand the F5/F6/F7/F8 configuration step (particularly for the Internet Explorer settings):

  • GPO Internet Explorer Maintenance missing in WS 2008 R2

    Hi all
suddenly I missed the  Internet Explorer Maintenance in WS 2008 R2, when I show the settings tab on the GPO it self its showing properly, but I cant find it when I try to edit.
    any assistance on that ?

    some body said
    > The Properties dialogue appears. Makes changes as needed. (Why do we
    > need a different GPO for each version I have no idea!)
You do not. Simply edit the XML and change the hidden version filter for
    iexplore.exe to max="99.0.0".
    it means
if i do this i can see all policy in all ie version??
and can you eplane how i edit xml ???
Editing the XML, is to allow a Group Policy Preferences - Internet Explorer settings object, to apply to a newer IE version. e.g. you create a GPP-IE setting for IE8 but you want it to apply to IE9.
This unsupported XML hack was proposed as a workaround, until it became understood how to do it in the correct, supported way.
    Here's an example:

  • "Internet Explorer Branding failed..." even after the GPO was deleted

Our environment is Server 2008 R2 on all servers and Windows 7 Pro 64bit on workstations. Both servers and workstations are on IE10. When running RSOP on the servers we get the following message under the User section:
"Internet Explorer Branding failed due to the error listed below. The specified procedure could not be found."
I found that a GPO still applied IE settings through Internet Explorer Maintenance. I've since created a new GPO using GPP and deleted the old GPO. The problem is that the error still appears when running RSOP.
How can I remove these old GPO settings?

    Hi,
Before going further, we need make sure that whether there is another GPO with Internet Explorer Maintenance settings configured
has been applied to the machine.
Besides, I want to confirm with you that whether the old GPO has been unlinked and permanently deleted. In order to narrow down
the cause of the issue, I suggest we could collect the following information.
    GPMC.log
    ==================
    a. On domain controller, click Start ->Run, type GPMC.MSC, it will load the GPMC console.
    b. Right click on "Group Policy Result" and choose wizard to generate a report for the problematic computer and user account (please
place appropriately). (Choose computer and select the proper user in the wizard)
    c. Right click the resulting group policy result and click the "Save Report…" => save report to save the report to a HTML
    file.
    Once you get the report,
you may upload it to the Skydirve and provide me the download link.
In addition, after running GPupdate /force command, please try to logoff and re-logon to see what will happen.

    Hi.
How to disable ''set as background'' from right click in internet explorer 8,9,10,11 by GPO in Win Serv 2008 R2.
People in my domain can set their background by right click in the pics on their IE, I enabled by GPO a wallpaper by default in ''Administrative Templates > Desktop > Desktop > Desktop Wallpaper''  and I enable too the  ''Administrative Templates
    > Control Panel > Personalization > Prevent changing desktop background'' at login people have the corporative Desktop but they can change by IE. What can I do? thanks.

    Hi,
I test this issue, actually, in IE 11, the option "set as backgroud" is grayed out after I applied policy  Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization > Prevent changing desktop background, but seems not suitable for

  • Does Resetting Internet Explorer Maintenance settings from GPO will also remove the proxy set in IE by a third party tool when the GPO refreshes for the first time

    Hi,
We have two GPO's with IE maintenance (Preference Mode Configured)
    The settings it has are
    1. Automatically detect configuration settings - Set to Enabled.
    2. Automatic Browser configuration - Not configured.
We do not have proxy value set in IE through this GPO.
We have proxy set in IE through a third party tool (TPT) which updates the proxy at logon event 5 and 10.
Does Resetting Internet Explorer Maintenance settings from these GPO's also clear proxy set in IE by third party tool after the first GPO refresh.
I am sure the second time when the GP refreshes, the client won't find any IEM settings and hence there is no question of the proxy set in IE by TPT to erase. It is only the first time of the GPO refresh that I am concerned about.
Can someone please guide as I am planning to do the same in our production and concerned about the downtime caused due to the proxy being removed if at all for the first time.

It will disable the proxy server option in Internet Options (untick the box), but will still store your proxy details.
    Thanks
    Ryan

  • Restrict Internet Explorer Through GPO

    Hello all,
I am part of an IT department that supports a client network environment and have an issue regarding their Windows terminal server and the use of Internet Explorer by its users. What we would like to do is completely disable the users' ability to surf the
web with Internet Explorer, and after researching this it appears I can accomplish this through a GPO. Unfortunately the only "walkthroughs" I could find instruct me to modify the Terminal Server OU GPO here:
User Configurations --> Windows Settings --> Internet Explorer Maintenance
The problem is there is no "Internet Explorer Maintenance". Apparently this was done away with Internet Explorer 10 and higher. The terminal server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 with Internet Explorer 10. Is there another way I can accomplish
this, even though Internet Explorer Maintenance is no longer available?
    Thank you for your feedback!

    Hi,
If you are looking at doing something like setting IE to go through a fake proxy server then you can do this with Group Policy Preferences.
The blog post here can show you how to do this.

  • Errors with Animation in Internet Explorer 9

Are you having trouble with your animation in Internet Explorer 9? Here is what fixed MY issues:
Are you using any SVG files? If so, IE9 might crop them akwardly. If they are coming out completely wrong (upside down, reversed, skewed, etc.) then your probably using those SVG files within Symbols. I found that most any svg I isued within a symbol (espically symbols within symbols that had rotation) refused to act properly. The simple fix was to go with PNG files instead for these uses, although it did slightly increase file size (30KB at most). Hope this helps anyone else out there having similar issues.

  • How to add Proxy server to internet explorer using a Group Policy 2008

After upgrading my AD and 1 DC of my two DC's to Server 2012 R2 I am seeing the error.
Internet Explorer Branding failed due to the error listed below.
The specified procedure could not be found.
This is because the Group policy "Internet Explorer Branding" is defined.
All discussion groups I have been able to find, suggest going onto the Windows 2008 R2 DC and use GPEDIT to remove this policy. Unfortunately, it does not appear where it should.
    How do I delete it?
    Thanks

    Hi Paul S I,
Please notice that for managing IE10
with Group Policy Preferences you need
to use a Windows 8 or Server 2012 DC.
    For proxy server
and proxy exception setting GPO setting, you can follow
below post in our team blog to move the policy to GPP.

    In the windows 2008R2,

  • With the Internet Explorer maintenance no longer in IE9 and above

    Hi
I heard someone that With the Internet Explorer maintenance no longer in IE9 and above version of IE.
    Is this True ?

If yes, what is the other solution for all my IE maintenance settings ?

  • No longer see "Internet Explorer Maintenance" in Group Policy Management Console

I am trying to configure Internet Explorer favorites on a GPO that I have already constructed.  I had already successfully created the GPO many months ago and wanted to go back and check on some things.
However in the GPMC when I navigate to User Configuration-->Policies-->Windows Settings, I no longer see "Internet Explorer Maintenance" listed.  This is where I had previously configured Internet Explorer favorites.
I uninstalled and reinstalled GPM using these instructions
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-install-the-group-policy-management-in-windows-7/ but this did not help.
Previously I had two Windows XP computers in the OU that this GPO was applied to.  I had no problems at all configuring it and getting the rules and favorites to apply to these two computers.  I just recently upgraded one of the computers to Windows
7 and used the same machine name for the computer.  The computer gets some of the rules applied to it but not all.  In particular the IE favorites are not being applied which led me to check the policy in the GPMC.  However, as stated before
I cannot even see "Internet Explorer Maintenance" which has me confused on what to do next.  Please help.

I'm too tired at the moment to check all you already did, so just let me
ask some further questions on that item:
This is a user or a computer item? If it is a user item and "run in
logged on users context" is checked, I believe it will fail, because a
non administrator cannot add all users favorites.
I'm unaware whether all users favorites works at all - never used it...
For further clarification, I'd enable GPP debug logging:
