Internet from time capsule 1/5th the speed of other wireless network

Hi...
Here's the problem. I have a time capsule 500gb set up in my house and connected via ethernet to another linksys wireless router and then via ethernet to my ASDL Modem. The problem i have is that the internet connection (when tested on Speedtest.net) is aprox. 1/5th the speed of the linksys network. any idea's why that might be?
I have my time capsule set up in WDS mode with an 802.11g Airport Express to distribute the network through the entire house. The speed is the same if i'm next to the time capsule or in any part of the house so i don't think its a signal strength thing. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

No, you are not using a full IPv6 system.. you are simply making sure the link to the TC is able to use IPv6.
Go to the Networking preferences and bring up the wireless setup, advanced. TCP/IP
Change the IPv6 setting to link-local.
Ensure ipv6 is set in the TC to link-local.
So click on the TC in the airport utility.. click on edit.. click on the internet tab. Click on internet options.
Then test your speed again.
If you have issues still give us a link speed when you are sitting in the same room as the TC.

I purchased a new Time Capsule (2TB - 2013), and I would like to use my old Time Capsule to extend the range of my wireless network. I can't get them to communicate. Any ideas?

You need to use the airport utility on a computer.
If you use v6 utility it is fairly easy and straight forward.
The trick is to place the old TC in the same room as the new one.
Do a full factory reset and then you can just go through the utility to extend wireless network.
I did one post with all the pictures.

If you have issues just ask.
Then you can place the old TC about half way between the new TC and the clients would want to connect.. the half way point is not distance but wireless signal levels.
You can pick that up by using the wireless diagnostics in a mac laptop and walking around to pick up the signals.
This is for extend wireless.. if you want roaming network it is entirely different. That means they are plugged together with ethernet.
Tell us if you mean roaming not wireless extend.

  • Using time capsule to extend the reach of my wireless network

I have a comcast router but wireless coverage only makes it halfway through my apartment. Bought a motorola router for front of apt, attached to cable and time capsule, but I'm not sure what to do next. Do I want to create a separate network or try to extend the comcast network? To make things more fun, my computer will only find the time capsule on one out of 20 scans, the other times nothing shows up. Thanks for any feedback/advice.

  • Separating Internet From Time Capsule

Until recently I have run an ADSL setup with my modem connected to my time capsule which then acted as the wireless hub for my computers. This work fine... I had internet access and network access in one. I have now connected cable internet but my cable outlet is not near the time capsule so I have connected a wireless modem. The problem I now have is that I have to switch between the two networks. One to access the internet and one to access my printers and files stored on the TC. Firstly, I hope this make sense to someone and secondly, does anyone know if there is a way to make the TC recognise my wireless modem.
Note: As I have two large printers attached to the TC it is not feasible to relocate the TC to the modem

When you mention that you reinstalled with the IP addresses, this hints that these devices are network printers that are connected to the LAN ports on the Time Capsule, correct?
I mentioned in my previous post that the Time Capsule only becomes a wireless backup device when it is configured to "join" a wireless network. It performs no routing functions at all, so the ethernet ports on the TC are not active in this type of setup.
Sorry, I would have mentioned that the ethernet ports are not active in the "join" setup if I had known that you were planning to use network printers, but this information was not presented at the time. The USB port is still active and might be an angle for you, but this type of setup only allows printing, so if you have an all-in-one type device, only the print function will be supported if the device is compatible with the Time Capsule.
Ironically, the AirPort Express 802.11"n" version has the ability to "join" a wireless network and the ethernet port can be enabled on the device. That would unfortunately mean another device was needed for your network if you need "remote" printing capabilities.
Might you have the ability to connect your main router to the Time Capsule using an ethernet connection? This would allow the Time Capsule to function as a switch, so the ethernet ports would be active in this type of setup.

  • HT4413 Trying to restore my iMac from Time Capsule after reinstalling the OS X

Had to reinstall the OS after replacing the power supply and finding the OS corrupted. Originally the iMac came with 10.4.7 which we upgraded to 10.6.8. Now trying to restore the data from my time capsule using  migration assistant  only to get the message that the backups were done with a newer version of OS X. I checked the version installed and it's up to date.
How can I get the data and how is it possible that the version is newer given that the same disks were used??

  • Time Capsule won't connect to a Linksys wireless network

I made the same mistake as everyone else with 7.3.1. The main problem I had was that after the update the TC wouldn't connect to my wireless network anymore. I put in the network name and password, which worked with version 7.3, and it wouldn't connect as an 'extend network' option.
I've rolled back to version 7.3 and now I'm having the same problem. I can't make it join my existing wireless network...? Any ideas? This thing's been nothing but problems since I bought it. Now I'm reading that TC's can't be used to join existing networks if it's not an Apple base station. I use a Linksys WRT54GS and I know that's not true because it worked before.
Help?! I'm on the edge with this one!

At first I had the same problem with being unable to connect a time capsule using airport utility 5.3.1 to a linksys wrt54g. I was finally able to when I followed the software's recommendation to use the encryption type: *WPA2 PERSONAL*.
So I connected an ethernet cable from my MacBook to the Linksys and changed the type of encryption from wep to wpa 2 personal and then I reset the Time Capsule and reinstalled/reconfigured it with the general setting "WPA / WPA2 Personal" in the encryption area.
Now it is working as a part of the linksys network, but I have not yet been successful at using it to "extend" the network like it should, and like I was told it could by a sales rep at the Apple Store. I'll be calling customer support tomorrow to solve this issue.
I hadn't configured the linksys in a while, so in case you don't know off the top of your head as I did not, to do so:
    1. connect the cable to the linksys and use your browser to go http://192.168.1.1
    (unless you changed this).
    2. just type "admin" in the password field (unless you changed this)
    3. go to the "wireless" tab, and then finally the "wireless" sub-tab.
    4. after choosing the WPA2 Personal encryption type, I left the other settings alone: "AES" as the type of " WPA Algorithms", and "3600 seconds" for the "Group Key Renewal"
(if you changed the login settings on the linksys there's a reset button on the back)
    Hope this helps...

  • Setting up time capsule on a router using my existing wireless network

how do i set up my existing time capsule to my wireless network.
Earleir i was using TC as a wireless hub too but i do not intend to do so now . please advise

Not sure exactly what you mean..
The best way to setup the TC is plugged in by ethernet to existing router. You can then turn off wireless.. or setup wireless as roaming network.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4260
It doesn't matter if the main router is apple or not apple, but the same ssid/security setup will work.
It is possible to extend wireless with another apple router. That has limitations but is much preferred to using non-apple router.
If you are trying to join a TC to a non-apple wireless network.. it can be done.. but the setup is extremely slow and poor reliability. It is not even available I think as option in v6 airport utility.. it might be in the setup. You can choose it in v5 utility by holding the option key when you choose wireless network mode.. it is so poor Apple do not support it.. and the TC becomes a dumb wireless client.. ethernet ports are shut off.. all wireless is reduced to single band client.
But there it is if you want to try.. Join a wireless network.. hidden so use option key to reveal.

  • HT5022 How to share my photos from time capsule external drive over the internet.

I saw some article that, i can share my photos from time capsule drive over the internet. Also, heard it can be done through manual configuration of time capsule. Firstly, i do not see such option in my time capsule configuration. I did a factory reset assuming, i might have configured through auto mode for the first time (that could be the reason why i don't see manual option). Now, i don't know, how can i share my images over the internet frome time capsule drive, without using my mac book system up and running all the time.. I wanted to create a secured user id/password to let the other users to access my network share drive. Is that possible?

  • Is it possible to take a wireless signal into my time capsule, and use the LAN connections?

    Hello everyone,
My wife has a clinic behind our house, that does not currently have a hard wired ethernet connection.  We are wondering if we can use our old 2nd generation time capsule to pick up the wirless signal from our home, and then use the LAN connections on the back to tie her credit card/debit machine into?  If we can't use the time capsule is there anything out there that would allow us to accomplish this?
    Thank you for your time

We are wondering if we can use our old 2nd generation time capsule to pick up the wirless signal from our home, and then use the LAN connections on the back to tie her credit card/debit machine into?
Yes....IF.....the wireless network in the house is provided by another Apple wireless router. In that case, the Time Capsule can be configured to "extend a wireless network". When it does this, the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule are enabled as well.
If the wireless network in the house is provided by a third party wireless router, there is a special feature only present on the AirPort Express that would allow it to be configured to "join" the wireless network. When it does this, the Ethernet ports are enabled on the Express.
As you might imagine, the Ethernet signal is only going to be as good as the quality of the wireless signal connection between the house and the clinic. As a test, take a laptop out to the clinic and see if you can get a good Internet connection that way. If you can, then an AirPort should work well for you.

  • Stream from time capsule to applte tv via ipad air

    hi,
im pretty new with apple...i used android before but im thinking about a change....
i want to stream music and movies/photos from a time capsule to tv and an av receiver via an ipad air.
is that possible? do i need a special app?
if so, how do i connect the apple tv to tv and av receiver?
    use a hdmi switch or
hdmi to tv and audio optical to av receiver?
    thanks!
    jan

You are better asking this is the ATV section..
The TC is useless.. it is a dumb storage of files.. no media servers whatsoever.
Nor can you use itunes libraries. You must have itunes running for the ATV to stream content.
You will need therefore to have files in some format that the ipad can read and use airplay to the ATV.
how do i connect the apple tv to tv and av receiver?
    use a hdmi switch or
hdmi to tv and audio optical to av receiver?
It is impossible to know without info on the actual av receiver capability.. but modern hdmi switching is built into the AV receiver.. you should not need another switch and you should be able to handle both sound and video over hdmi.. but if not that is simple to fix with optical.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5209
    http://www.apple.com/au/airplay/
Notice in all this setup.. the TC is completely lacking.. it has no role in this. Anything you do without iTunes you do on your own as far as Apple is concerned.. and to play iTunes you need a computer running.. sorry but that is the result of copyright protection.
If you do not want to use itunes.. then buy a simple media player.. eg WD Live TV.. it can play content directly from Time Capsule.. because the WD is a proper player.

  • How Do I Delete backup data from Time Capsule if have 2 computers on 1 TC?

I have been backing up 2 computers (one desktop/one laptop) to a 1TB Time Capsule. I have now added an external hard drive for the desktop computer and would like to delete that computer's backups from Time Capsule to free up space for the laptop computer. How do I delete the desktop computer's backup data from Time Capsule without disturbing the laptop back ups? Do I drag the desktop computer's backups.backupdb and sparsebundle to trash and empty?
    Thanks.

    Rick Gregory wrote:
Thanks though I am still a bit confused as I had read NOT to delete via Finder, but via Disk Utility (erase). Does it make any difference?
You're probably referring to the advice never to change, move, or delete anything inside your backups via the Finder, as that can corrupt them.
A number of folks have tried to delete a single backup that way, and caused all sorts of troubles.
Deleting the entire sparse bundle is ok.

  • How do I change the 5 ghz channel on new Airport Express when extended from Time Capsule?

Hi there. My Airplay device connected to the new Aiport Express keeps cutting out.
The 5ghz connection on my Time Capsule is set to channel 48. I have a new Airport Express (with Airplay device) extending from the Time Capsule and when I use WiFi Scanner, it shows the Airport Express set to channel 157. What gives? Is there a way to change to channel 48 or does this not matter? I imagine since they're on different channels, they're not talking to each other or am I .
Thanks in advance for any help.

I've managed to change the 5gHz of ther Airport Express that's extending the network.
As mentioned, main AE is on channel 48, and I now have the 2nd AE on channel 36 - which means my TV can now see the network. Also tested speed via my mavbook air on the same 5gHz network as it all seems OK (A while ago I spotted my Time Capsule was on the same channel 48 as main AE and throughput was abysmal! Bad enough to make me reset the TC to factory defaults and setup again - which is when the TC got channel 120).
Anyway, the fix... I changed the 2nd AE to create a wireless network (instead of extend), and manually set the channel to 36. I then set it back to extend, and it seems to have kept channel 36.

  • I have connected my time capsule to motorola SG6580 modem via ethernet.  I have a wireless network on the motorola and a wireless network from the time capsule.  I get duplicate IPs error messages sometimes. How do I fix?

I have connected my time capsule to motorola SG6580 modem via ethernet.  I have a wireless network on the motorola and a wireless network from the time capsule.  I get duplicate IPs error messages (no connection) sometimes when trying to connect devices to the wireless network. How do I fix? Sometimes devices cannot connect to the network because of conflicting IPs.  I look on the Motorola and every device has a unique IP assigned but occasionally a device has taken the IP of another device.  I have been writing down all the devices and the IPs they have been using.  It happens more with PCs than Macs, ipads or iPhones.

If the Time Capsule is set up correctly in bridge mode, then it is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router to provide the correct IP address assignments for all devices on the network.
Check to insure that the Time Capsule is correctly set up to operate in bridge mode as follows:
On your Mac, open AirPort Utility
Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Insure that the setting for Router Mode is configured to read "Off (Bridge Mode)"
Once you have confirmed that the Time Capsule is configured correctly, everything else is the responsibility of the Motorola modem/router as far as network routing and IP address assignments for devices.
If you continue to have IP address issues, then you should contact the Internet Service Provider (ISP) that provided the Motorola device to you and ask them to fix the issue.

  • What is the time capsule's max wifi speed? e.g. 150mb

What is the time capsule's max wifi speed? e.g. 150mb

    Depends on the model.
Latest Gen 4 are now 450mbps on 5ghz.. of course it will only get that with the right clients. Mostly you will get 300mbit if up close.
But all generations and all apple routers only support single channel on 2.4ghz so max speed is 150mbit..although the actual link speed is probably more like 130.
