Internet in Hotels

I have a Mac Book Pro and when I travel and check into hotels I can see their wirless networks but can get on the Internet. I ask the front desk for help and all they can do from me is give me a login and password, but I can never find a login page. Do I need to change something in the network preferences? Can anybody help me out. Thank You.

Hello,
Try this... go to your Menu Bar and click the Airport icon. If your Airport status icon is not visible in the Menu Bar, open Internet Connect from your Applications folder and check the button where it says: Check Airport status in menu bar. Now, click the Airport icon in the Menu Bar, and select the name of the motel/hotel network. A dialog box will open. Type in the network name if necessary and the password. That should get you online.

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router

  • Wireless internet in hotels giving security certificate expirations

I noticed this when I was on vacation when I was staying in hotels and trying to use the internet on my ibook. I was trying to login into my bank and credit card sites to check my balance, but couldn't due to some sort of message saying the certificate had expired. Now back at home, with my wireless I don't get that message. Could this have been a temporary glitch or was this because of the hotels wireless? What should I do the next time this happens to fix this issue?

    Hello,
This tends to happen when your system clock is incorrectly set.
Does your iBook battery hold good charge? Sometimes if the battery is not charged and you haven't place the power adapter in for a while, the system clock resets itself. (You should see a warning in most cases)
If this happens again, just check to see if your system clock has been set correctly and if not change accordingly.
    Best of luck

  • Connecting to wired Internet at Hotel

    Hi all
I'm traveling on business out of the country. I notice the hotel I'm staying at has wired internet.
Okay it's been a long time for me so what do I need to have with me besides maybe a CAT-5 (ethernet) cable and how would I connect.
I've got an early 2008 MBP. Is there something I need to set up somewhere in the MBP? I don't want to mess up my settings for my Home based Airport Extreme (wireless network).
    thanks
    Allen

You just need the cable. In System Preferences > Network, make sure Ethernet is in the list on the left. Once you connect the cable, you should be good to go (but, you may need to launch Safari, go to a generic page like google.com, to be re-directed to a page where you agree to the hotel's terms of service, etc.).

  • Internet from Hotels

    Hi all,
I am taking my new macpro to a conference. Could someone please explain how I can get connected to the internet from a hotel (the room has internet port)? In terms of safety, what are the things I should pay attention to?
    Thanks!

Hi, assuming its the same as the uk most hotels charge for the use of their wireless.
What will happen is when you turn your mac on it will not find your usually wireless network so will present your with available networks. Initially the hotel network will appear to be unsecure so you can connect to it.
However the no matter what webpage you attempt to goto the first page that come sup is a welcome screen of some kind and payment options. Pays yer money and you are set to go.

Repairing the HD and permissions isn't necessary but it may be a good precautionary thing to do before you leave to help assure you won't have problems on the road.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
It should not be necessary to make another location in your case, but at the least open Network preferences, select your Ethernet port and click on the Configure button. Click on the TCP/IP tab and verify that the Configure IPv4 drop down menu is set for DHCP. Now, I would suggest that you also click on the Configure IPv6 button and set the drop down menu to Off. Most hotel hardware does not support that option and leaving it turned on might cause a problem. In fact you can leave it turned off at home also because it's not really needed in your home network.
Now, if you want you can instead create a new location when you open Network preferences by simply selection Edit Locations from the Location drop down menu. Create a new location and name it something like Hotels and configure everything just as described previously. Before you turn off the computer to pack up set it to that location so it will be ready when you get to your room and set up.

  • Open Directory access from outside of network / internet

    Hello all,
Got a question I'd love to get some help on, I have some users who are outside of my network and I'd like them to connect into the open directory on our leopard server so they can use the Shared iCal calendars, addresses, etc.
So my questions are A) Is it possible to connect in from outside the network and get access to the directory without having to have a seperate user account and use our VPN every time you want to connect? - if not is this the only way to do it (would you have to connect via the Mac VPN and then connect to the directory?)
    B) is it possible to do this "seamlessly" so that you don't have to change any settings, login details each time you switch between your local user from outside the network and your directory access. (so basically if you are in iCal if you have internet access it will connect you to the directory, without you doing anything extra?)
Hope that makes sense, I can't seem to find the answers I need in the manuals, if I knew how this was meant to work I could probably have a fair go at figuring out how to actually do it (firewall changes etc)
Thanks in advance for the help
    Martin

If your OD server is visible from the internet -- i.e., it has a public address -- then you can do this without the VPN. However, it's not advisable to have a server exposed in that fashion.
You would be better off doing this through the VPN:
    - Remote user connects to internet at hotel, for example.
    - Remote user initiates VPN connection.
    - Remote user now has access to iCal server and directory information.
Explain to the users that this information is private to the company, and private company resources are only available through the VPN. Allowing access without the VPN would be similar to the company posting its Employee roster and meeting calendars on the face of the building where any person (or competitor) could see them.

It's just one extra step: Connect to VPN. You're still the same local user on the computer.
If you're talking about laptop users needing directory access to authenticate when logging into their computers, well...That sounds like a whole other situation.
    Hopefully this helps.

  • How to use skype in mobile

Hi i have skype in my mobile and installed and login but am not able to call to mobile.
I have Unlimited World subsciption .
    Please help me ?

    Hey Krys great question!
You can use your laptop or tablet if you are taking them with you.
You can also use a friend's device (mobile or desktop), go to an internet café, or use an airport or even hotel computer.
    Basically, any device will do!
The device needs to be connected to the Internet - most hotels, cafes and airports provide free wi-fi nowadays, I always use those.
Download and install Skype on the device or launch it if it is already installed.
Login with your existing Skype login and password. (Don't forget to log out when you're done with your calls!)
You will see all your Skype contacts and past conversations, and you can call them for free, just as you would do it from home.
If you want to call a mobile or a landline back home or in the country you are travelling to, you can also do that with Skype Credit or a Skype subscription. Calls to landlines and mobiles are not free as we need to connect you to a network operator. However, they are usually much cheaper than what you would pay using your mobile! [DataSource.Error] OData: Request failed (ConnectFailure): Unable to connect to the remote server
    Stephen

OData is a web service and so long as you can access it from your current network context, it'll work. Home, Internet Café, Hotel, Airplane -- doesn't matter. If the data source is private and is on a restricted network (like some sort of private data analysis
source internal to your company), then you will need to VPN into that network before you attempt to refresh your data.
I have noted some basic steps in my blog that might help you setup the basics and verify with a known publically available OData source.

  • Finding a USB or Ethernet wifi adapter comp w/Mountain Lion

Where I live/work I only have access the kind of internet that hotels use.  I have to login with each device to access the internet, and only one device at a time.  This is a bummer, I used to use connectify but wifi - wifi on mountain lions built in router isn't an option.  Up until lately I have been able to logon to my internet through hardwire (ethernet).  I just moved rooms and this room has no ethernet hookup, so I am looking for a small usb wifi adapter.  I hope this would work that then I could choose to use my computer as a router by way of USB to WIFI.
Has anyone used one that is easily compatible with Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

Ethernet is the best by far.. as the actual print server is built into the printer.. If you use USB you are using a connection designed for local printers not network. And you are using the TC as print server which it does an absolutely minimal job of.. it has no ability to correctly assess printer conditions or send accurate details back to the client.. Whereas a proper network printer can controls all kinds of aspects of the print controller.

  • Traveling with my i-mac

    Hi all,
    I've got an i-mac with:
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x8C)
I'd like to take my desktop on a trip. (it hasn't been out of the house since we bought it..haha) I'd like to be able to connect to the internet at hotels, which probably have free wireless. I'm assuming I can find the network like on a laptop and put in a password and jump on the internet, right?
Also, if we are in an area where no free wireless is available, what do I need to get in order to get on line? Is there something relatively cheap like an air card that I can just buy and put in a USB port? What type of card is compatible with my computer?
    Thanks for you help.

You can use the computer in any hotel that provides wired or wireless Internet for guests.
In order to use wireless broadband you will need an account with a cell phone provider that offers data services with your contract. You would then need a modem for the computer. ATT and Verizon, for example, have phone and data plans and also sell USB-based modems some of which will be compatible with Macs. Most data services start around $30 per month. There are typically limits on the total amount of data you can transfer (both up and down) per month after which you are charged for the additional traffic on some flat cost/MB of additional data. If you already have a cell phone then you can simply add on the data service your cell phone providers sells.

  • 3g fails after applying carrier settings to a phone that worked since day 1

Please can anyone advise me what to do. I am travelling and have been using my iphone extensively on the Spanish 3G network. My iphone is from Belgium and is unlocked (fully legal as Belgium iphones are not locked to any vendor) and when i am in Spain i insert my Spanish SIM and change my internet APN settings and bingo everything works just great. However this morning i accepted an update from apple itunes for carrier settings for the vodafone network in Spain, At that point i was using my iphone in tethered mode for the internet (the hotel room fee's being a rip off).
Now my iphone claims "Could Not Activate Cellular Data Network" and i can not access any settings any more to change the APN!
Jeez i wish i hadn't accepted the update. of course there is NO backup in the backup directory, it seams apple doesn't think we need a backup. How can i get my phone to the normal state where i can access the settings for network like APN, MMS etc?
    Thanks to all

A loss of the APN setting should mean the carrier update has installed the correct APN, so the setting is not needed. To undo the carrier setting, you could try deleting any files in:
    ~Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support
    then Restoring the iPhone.

  • Can I get wifi access with my iphone 4 verizon in china?

I have an iphone 4 with Verizon.  I have been told I can't get phone service, but have also been told I can get to the internet in hotels with wifi to get my webmail.  Is this true?  Will Google translate work under these conditions?  Maps?

WiFi should work anywhere in the world. China blocks a lot of sites including (last I heard) the non-Chinese version of Google, though, so whether or not you'll be able to use Google Translate I don't know. I don't see Translate on the Google Hong Kong site, so it seems doubtful, but someone else here may know.
