Internet is slow using Airport

For some reason my internet is slow when i am using Airport at home. But when I am at my friends house using airport is much faster. Can someone help me solve this issue. My internet is too slow at home...help, thank you

I had a slowed internet problem for a few weeks after using train wifi. While on the train I altered my Location settings in Network preferences. Last night I looked at Location settings and found my home router was not actively chosen. I made the selection and I'm up to speed again. Hope this helps.

  • Slow internet speed when using AirPort

    Hi
I guess this may have been discussed before, but I could really do with some clear advice on the subject. I own a 2007 Mac Pro with an AirPort wi-fi card fitted by Apple as an option when I bought the machine. However, for some time now, I have experienced problems with my wi-fi connection when on the net.
Firstly, there's the signal. When I switch the computer on first and then access the internet, all four bars on the AirPort icon on my desktop are in black. However, after a while this starts to drop to three or two - sometimes even just one. The connection speed to the net decreases as the bars drop. When all four bars are filled in black, my connection speed is still not very good. My Mac Pro is not really far from my AirPort Extreme - in fact I have tried my old Windows XP based laptop in the same room and it appears to be fine provide better access speeds (even though it's an older machine)!
Secondly, my Mac Pro doesn't seem to like my 8 digit WPA-PSK security key on my modem (accessed through the AirPort Extreme base station). When I disconnect and try to re-connect to my network (as sometimes this helps my connection speed when it's low) the Mac asks me to punch in my key. I do this and it never seems to recognise it. Tried changing the password key through my modem's settings via an ethernet cable, yet still - when asked to type in the key when trying to access wirelessly - it is not recognised.
Can anyone offer any advice?? I have a Netgear modem/router with an AirPort Extreme 802.11n base station. I purchased my Mac Pro June 2007 from Apple.
    Thanks

I know cable connection is faster than bluetooth. But BT connection shouldn't be that slow.

  • Why is internett so slow with Airport express???

    Hi!
I have a mac mini and a pc.
I sometimes think that my mac mini is so slow when I use Internett.
There is a norwegian page that I have tested it on... and the answere was alarmin:
My pc had a connection of: about 4000 kbit/s connected to wireless and airport express... and about 6000 with out wireless.... hmmmm I tested it many times...
My mac mini (which is in my livingroom) had a connection at only 919 kbit/s????
why is it sooooooo slow???? can I do anything to speed it up????

    Great Henry,
That was great advice, I have been unofficially been working in WiFi for my school and this is one of the most clear responces I've seen from discussions. Anyways some things that I do believe that you forgot was cordless phones 2.4Ghz range, microwave ovens, DSS (Direct Satellite Service), Electrical things like power lines, Other airport/WiFi stations, and moving objects made of metal between the computer and base station. Those are all broad things. Usually things like that won't effect it but it really depends. For the cordless phone you just need to change the channel on the airport. I hope that helps, Good Luck!

PS I have found that sometimes its just plain wackey, usually cause of wires and such things in the walls

  • Internet connection loss using Airport Extreme and Netgear DG843

    Hello,
I am accessing internet via a Netgear DG834 router (not wifi), connected to an Airport Extreme base station. Most of the time, I can access internet through the Wifi network of the AEB without any problem. But around once a day I am experiencing connection loss and the only way I found to restore it is to reset the Netgear Router by physically unplungging it.
Both the Netgear and the AEB have up to date firmware, so I suspect some kind of problem in my setup, as I am not an expert in setting up networks.
Is it possible that using a Netgear Router connected to the AE (which is also a router if I understand correctly) could cause connection problems ?
I am at a loss, and do not even know how to describe the relevant informations of my current setup. If a kind soul could help me nonetheless, I would be very gratefull.

    Yes.
Ensure that that the AEBS is configured to not distribute IP addresses.
Also ensure that the AEBS is on a different channel to the DG834G.

  • Toshiba A665 wireless slow using airport extreme

Slow even with no encryption. Works well with other routers I have tried. The wireless driver is current. Toshiba support has no idea.

I know this is an old thread, and I hope the OP solved his problem.  If not, or if there are other people having this issue, I wanted to share my situation and what worked for me to solve it.
Bottom line:  Try switching your encryption type from AES to TKIP and see if that helps.
    Full Story:
I too have a Toshiba A665 laptop that works perfectly on every wireless network I've ever connected to with the sole exception being the network at my parent's house, where they have an Airport Extreme router.
I knew my laptop wireless was fine due to the fact it worked everywhere else.  But I also knew that my parent's network was fine because everyone else's wireless connection was working as it should.
My computer would connect, but it was *painfully* slow.  It was worse than dial-up (if you can remember those days).  Pages would time out, email took forever to load, etc.
The connection strength was excellent, ping times to the router were perfect (3 ms or less), the connection speed was at least 65 Mbps, and it was connecting via 802.11n, which was great.  Basically, I couldn't find any obvious reason why there was a slowdown.
After pulling my hair out trying multiple "solutions" and not finding any help online, I FINALLY stumbled on the answer (at least for me).
I am connected to the Airport using WPA2-Personal security.  Intially, I was using AES encryption.  On a whim, I changed that to TKIP instead and voilà!  It works perfectly now.
It's hard to describe how frustrating this was to deal with and track down a solution for, but I'm hopeful that someone else can benefit from this fix as well.

  • Internet intermittently slow over Airport Extreme

I have an Airport Extreme network at home (AEBS model A1354).  My 2009 20" iMac (Intel, 10.6.8, 8GB RAM) constantly loses its internet connection even though the Airport connection is fine.  Here are some details:
    - The iMac remains connected to the internet (with IP address), but pages load very slowly or not at all.
    - The problem affects all web pages, not just some.
    - The problem does not affect the other two Snow Leopard Macs (and multiple phones) using the same Airport network.
    - There is no problem if I connect the iMac to the AEBS via Ethernet (I tried this for months and had no issues).
    - The problem exists regardless of which browser I use (Safari, Chrome, Firefox).
    - The iMac is in the same room as the AEBS, about 8 feet away.  I always see all 4 bars black in the menu bar.
    - The problem is sometimes temporarily fixed by turning Airport off and back on or by logging out and back in.  However, this only lasts long enough to load one web page or so.  Then the problem comes back.
    - The problem is fixed by restarting the computer.  This lasts a day or so.
    - I have taken the iMac to the Apple Store for a hardware check, which didn't turn up any problems.
    - I did a clean install of Snow Leopard and reinstalled only the files from the user accounts and a few applications (not the whole Time Machine backup).  That fixed the problem for a few weeks.
    - There is very little third-party software installed.  However, I suspect the culprit may be Minecraft, which is an online game my kids play.  Minecraft runs in Java, so I wonder if Java may be causing the internet problem.
    - I have the latest versions of Snow Leopard, Java, and everything else Apple Software Update wanted.
My wife says we should just keep the iMac hooked up to the AEBS via Ethernet (which works perfectly as stated above), but I am not ready to accept that solution since the Airport should work.  Many thanks to anyone who can help me with this problem.

Update:  I tried not allowing the kids to play Minecraft.  That seemed to help for a while, but the problem is now back.  Anybody have an idea?

  • Loss of Internet Connectivity when Using Airport

I have my Airport Express talking to my wireless Dlink DI514 router for iTunes. This worked great for several months, but all of a sudden I am having problems connecting to the internet.
I spoke to comcast, and they see no problems in my area - they said it could be a router issue. Later I noticed that I only have problems connecting to the internet when I am using my Airport express to play music on my stereo system (which is most of the time).
Has anyone had this kind of problem before? Could it be that my router has gotten sick and can't handle iTunes and connecting to the internet simultaneously? I'd have posted this question on the Dlink site, but I don't see any message boards there. Any ideas?

Ensure that your AirPort Express (AX) is configured as a wireless client of the D-Link. The instructions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • I don't need a data plan or internet plan for using airport ?

I understand that all the airport's do not need an internet plan, is just connect to a AC adapter and you have free wi-fi or not?

Sorry, but your understanding is not correct.
If you want the AirPort to have Internet capability, you will need to provide a broadband Ethernet Internet connection from a service provider to the AirPort.

Where did you see the memory usage? The firmware on the router might not be updated so it is best that you do an upgrade. Make sure to reset and reconfigure the router after that.

  • MacBook Pro loses connection to Internet after sleep using Airport Time Capsule

I recently upgraded to Mavricks and then added a new Airport Time Capsule, and now I my MBP will not connect to the wireless LAN after waking up from sleep mode.  My MBP worked great for over a year with an non-Apple router, so I am thinking that there is a new Apple computer-to-Apple Router issue going on. Any thoughts, suggestions?
I read all the threads and have followed all the simple advice, such as making sure the Airport is at the top of the network priority list, etc, to no avail.  I end up having to reboot my MBP to get reconnected, which is super frustrating.

  • Erasing TM using Airport Utility erases printing/internet settings, too?

If I use Airport Utility and under Disks choose Erase, will this erase all my internet and wireless printer settings too? (My fingers are crossed that this isn't the case...)
Also, I have my iMac connected via ethernet and wirelessly. When I turn off Airport then the ethernet connection kicks in automatically. Am I correct in assuming that if I were to erase everything and start new, I should just keep Airport off (= is there anything in Airport Utility that I should do)?
On a slightly different note, Safari doesn't work when I connect via ethernet (only FIrefox does). Is there anything that comes to anyone's mind that would cause this? I have turned off TCP/IP - Configure IPv6 but that makes no difference.
    Thank you so much.

So the TC is not the devise generating your network? You have another wireless router? Then ethernet only is fine. In Airport Utility change Wireless to "OFF" and Internet to "OFF (Bridge Mode)".
TC is the device that I use for my wireless network (I do not have another wireless router, only an AirExpress in the living room hooked up to speakers). Should I change Wireless to OFF in Airport Utility only during the initial re-backing up of my data? When finished with the re-backing up of my data, should I change the settings? Will this interfere with my printer and AirExpress in the other room?
I'm sorry, I didn't realize it was only connected temporarily for the initial full backup. Then don't change any setting other than, turning OFF Airport Preferences (NOT Airport Utility) while connected to ethernet. Then, yes, turn it back ON once the backup is complete and you are no longer connected via ethernet. The idea here is that by turning OFF Airport Prefs while connected via ethernet, you are assured of the fastest connection speed to the TC. Otherwise, wireless may still take precedence and slow down the transfer.
    In response to:
What do you mean by "Safari doesn't work?" Please be precise and as informative about the issue as possible.
It's strange... When connected by ethernet, Safari does not load. It just hangs. Firefox works without any problem. Since my iMac is right next to Time Capsule there is no need really for this computer to be connected wirelessly. I use wireless only because I prefer to use Safari. Any ideas at all?
Now, I'm a little confused. Do you intend on keeping the Mac connected to the TC via ethernet permanently since you say "no need really for this computer to be connected wirelessly."? If that's the case, then In Airport Utility set Wireless to "Create a wireless network" and Internet to "Share a public IP address".
    Cheers!

  • Internet speed slows down when connected via airport express

Internet speed slows down when connecting via airport express. When connecting directly via the timecapsulethe internet speed is ok, when connecting via the airport express the speed slows down. What can I do to change that? Any suggestions?

Turn off the AirPort Express completely as a test, and move your computer very close to the location of the Express.
As I said before, the Express can only extend the bandwidth (speed) that it receives from the Time Capsule, so the speed that you see there with the Express powered off will be the fastest speed of which the Express is capable.
The Express will make the signal go further when it extends....but it will not make the signal go faster.
A good location for a device that extends wirelessly is a point that is about half the distance from the Time Capsule and the general area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you locate the AirPort Express too far from the Time Capsule or there are more than a couple of walls in the signal path, the signal will be very slow by the time that it reaches the Express....and the Express simply extends a signal that has already slowed down significantly.
If you already have the Express located about half the distance between the Time Capsule and general area that needs more wireless coverage, how many walls, ceilings or other obstructions are there in the signal path between the Time Capsule, the AirPort Express and the area that needs more coverage?
Often, due to obstructions, it is just not possible to achieve good performance when you try to extend a network wirelessly. The solution is connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
There is virtually no signal loss with this type of connection, so the Express can be located exactly where it is needed and it will produce a much faster wireless signal in this type of setup.

  • Timeout using Airport Internet Sharing

Posted this under the MacBook Forum, too. None of these Airport forums look exactly correct, so I'm sorry if this is the wrong place, but it's the best I could find.
I've had a Mac Mini for a couple of months now, and have just recently added a Mac Book. The Mini is connected to the Internet through the ethernet port and a cable modem. I decided to share the Internet connection with the MacBook using Airport. Both computers are running Mac OS 10.4.7
I set up the connection (with WEP and a password) easily enough, and it works, for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Then the MacBook stops passing any data over the Internet. In the Network tab of the System Preferences, it will still show that it is connected to my other computer, but the browser stops seeing web pages, and other Internet apps timeout also. I've also tried opening terminal.app and pinging sites. Nothing. The Mini continues to work fine, so my cable connection isn't dropping. The only thing I've found that will let me start using the Airport connection again is to go to the sharing preferences on the Mini, turn sharing off, start it up again, and then log in again from the Mac Book.
My first thought was that it might be some sort of power saver setting on the laptop. When I use a public WiFi access point with the Mac Book, however, I don't get these timeouts, but can keep on using the connection for as long as I like. So it seems that the Mini will just stop sending data over the AirPort connection after a while. I'd kind of like to make this work, since, if it does, there is no real need to buy a separate AirPort base station.

This is happening to me as well. I travel for work and when I am at home, I simply have to reconnect (put in my password, etc.) and I am on again. Not too much of a hassle.
But, in hotels, the wireless feels like dial-up. It is very slow. The connection resets or is timed out and the Airport signal still shows at full strength.
I even used an ethernet "bridge"? and it did not help.
The ISP says they are getting a signal to and from my computer and that nothing is wrong with the system.
I run Diagnostics and it either says it is working properly or asks if I typed ww.apple.com instead of www.apple.com
I am going to call Apple Care and see what can be done myself. I'll let you know what I find out.
(I actually just had to come back to this and cut/copy because the connection was lost as I wrote!)

You can set up daily time limits for each computer that connects using wireless, but it is not possible to do this when a computer is connecting directly using a wired Ethernet connection.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility on your Mac and click Manual Setup
