Internet OK w/ Parallels but not Boot Camp

Background:
Last week my WDS network consisting of 3 Airport Expresses (802.11g) got snarled up to the point I had to reset the entire system. Prior to this I was able to get Internet via Boot Camp, Fusion (on my Mac Pro), or Parallels (in my MacBook Pro).
*Current problem:*
After the network was restored I had to reenter my WEP password/code into all my machines. On my MacBook Pro, however, I cannot get Internet with Boot Camp. When I try to "repair," it times out and tells me it can't find the IP. (It has no problems "seeing" my network, it just won't get online).
However, when I use Windows via Parallels 2.5 (which uses this Boot Camp partition) I have no problem getting online. *The problem only exists when using Boot Camp on the MBP.* (I have no problems getting online via Fusion or Boot Camp on my Mac Pro either, just to eliminate my ISP, modem, and base stations).
But now that I've narrowed down the issue to just Boot Camp on my MBP I'm not sure how to proceed. I'm not much of a Windows troubleshooter. Any ideas how to get Internet back?

Same general problem, but I'm using a Mac Pro that previously connected without a problem under BC.
For my case, I removed then reinstalled Vista to a larger partition. I can connect to the network, but not the internet. Parallels and OSX have no problem (though I have to select the connection in OSX after booting to Vista and back).
I'm using WPA+TKIP

  • S-Video adapter and analog TV works with OSX 10.5 but not Boot Camp 2.1(XP)

I bought a mini-DVI to S-video or composite adapter to use with an older analog TV. Works great with OSX 10.5 no problems. However, I currently have Windows XP running with Boot Camp 2.1 and it wont work with the TV. If I ever get an image it's three black and white fuzzy and distorted iterations of the monitor.
Since it works with OSX but not with XP i'm thinking its some sort of boot camp issue and not a problem with the hardware or adapter. Therefore, it should be solvable, right? Does anybody know how to fix this? Will upgrading to snow leopard and boot camp 3.1 solve it?

Perform a custom install from the Mac OS X 10.5 disks and install only that component if possible; if not, use Pacifist to install it. In either case, rerun the combo updater for your Mac OS X version afterwards.

  • 10.5.5 Installed but not boot camp utility found

    Hey Everyone,
So I am a college student, also a MBP owner, who works at my school's "Help Desk." I had someone come in the other day with a MacBook Pro 2.16 Ghz Core Duo processor, so it must have come with 10.4 I think (Correct me if I'm wrong, please), but the machine had 10.5. She was looking to have boot camp set up except when I went to run the utility it certainly was not on there.
From there I tried running updates to see if that might update it or something and still nothing.
So basically, I am just wondering how I might go about putting boot camp on there. Would 10.5 have to be reinstalled entirely? Or is there an independent installer that could be an option?
I'd appreciate any help that I get.
    Thank you,
    Smerky

  • Can install Windows 7 Pro, but not Boot Camp drivers

I have used Boot Camp assistant to install Windows 7 Pro (64 bit), and built the USB drive with Boot Camp drivers.
Installed on a separate drive on my Mac Pro.
When I install the drivers and reboot, I get an error. Basically Windows says there is an error and it needs to run System Restore in order to roll back to the previous status (ie. remove Boot Camp drivers).
I am using the latest Boot Camp drivers for a Mac Pro (4,1) and 64 bit Windows.
I tried downloading the drivers from Apple's website in Windows, unzipped and installed - same issue.
Windows is not yet registered.... (might that be an issue?)
Grateful for some ideas. I have previously had Win7 running on this machine, and even Win 8 (which crashed - necessitating a roll back to Win 7 whcih is nicer).
    TIA

the drivers have a root setup.exe if people have problems with that they can manually navigate to the sub dirs and run the driver installs for the various hardware manually
the various driver exe install will only install if they detect the hardware is there so it's safe to run installers for say a video card ones computer does not have
and if one of the driver don't work of the hardware related to it is defect in some way you can identify which one as the restore would happen right over that driver install
that windows is not registered should not play apart as far as I know

  • Bootcamp boots in parallels but not form start up.

hi i was having problems installing bootcamp and installed it to my partitioned (partitioned by bootcamp installation app) side of the HDD it will load up perfectly within Parallels but not through the boot selection on start up and shows a error about no bootable something.
should i uninstall the bootcamp and parallels and try to install it again through the utility or how do i set it to be able to boot form start up to it withought a Virtual machine?

    1. Remove the Parallels VM.
    2. Remove the Bootcamp Partition using Bootcamp Assistant.
    3. Create the Bootcamp partition again using Bootcamp Assistant only, build a USB as directed and if necessary.
    4. Bootcamp Assistant will automatically boot to the Windows Installer and start it.
    5. Install Windows as directed by the Installer.
What kind of problems were you having during the initial installation that made you switch to Parallels-based installation?

  • Parallels 7 or boot camp on snow leopard

    I own a MacBook Pro 13 [mid 2009]. I've upgraded it to 8gb ram.
My problem is I'm not able to decide if I should install windows 7 using parallels 7 or boot camp.
Also will it slow down the machine.
And I also need help in installing windows7.

If you use boot camp you will then have a Dual Boot system running each OS separately. If you use Parallels you will be running Win 7 on top of OS X being able to use both OSs at the same time.
BC Win 7 will have complete access to all hardware and resources
Parallels Win 7 will only have access to the VM resources, and physical hardware resources, you assign to it through Parallels. It would be slightly slower and make OS X run slightly slower. But you don't have to leave one OS to go to the other. Also with a VM install of Win 7 you don't have to pre define and use up as much physical hard drive space. The VM install will only use the amount of physical hard drive space as the VM needs. Expanding when needed and otr you can expand it or create a second Virtual Disk. Can't do that with BC.
Pluses and Minuses with both types of installs.

Get a Virtual Macine software program, Parallels, VMware Fusion or VirtualBox, and install XP in a virtual machine.
You can't install XP in a Boot Camp Partition with Lion or Mt Lion, only Win 7.

  • Parallels destop or Boot Camp?

I'm in the market for a new MacBook and would really like access to all those Windows games out there. But I am unsure if Parallels Desktop or Boot Camp would be best the best program to get the best quality out of the games. I don't need it blazing fast and I don' t want to waste my money getting something that basically doesn't work. Thanks to anyone who can help.

Boot Camp if you'll be playing Windows games on your MacBook.

  • Parallels install after Boot Camp

I have a new Macbook Pro on the way and am trying to figure out the best way to install Boot Camp and Parallels and only activate my copy of Windows XP one time. Do I install Boot Camp first? Parallels first? Any help from someone who has done this would be very helpful.

I suggest you download the Boot Camp software from Apple and read the documentation carefully. Visit the Parallels' site where you can also download a copy of the documentation and read it carefully. Both docs explain how to install the software. The Parallels' doc will explain how to use a Boot Camp installation for a VM. However, if you use Boot Camp there's no need for Parallels (and vice-versa.) Having both is a duplication of effort that's really not necessary.
If you need information or support for Parallels then visit their forum: http://forum.parallels.com/. The Apple Discussions does not provide support for Parallels.
For Boot Camp support visit the Boot Camp forum which is a separate forum in the Apple Discussions.

  • I have to run Windows for work, which is best Parallels, Fusion, or Boot Camp? I won't need to share anything with the Mac Side.

I have to run Windows for work, yuk! Which is best Parallels, Fusion, or Boot Camp? I will not need to share anything with my Mac side as I will just be running one program to chat on the web and send Emails.

Parallels, Fusion and VirtualBox are all virtualization applications, they 'virtualize' (create) a Windows environment on your Macs OSX operating system.
Boot Camp makes a compatible partition on your hard drive so you may install windows on it directly.

Boot Camp doesn't install the drivers. You have the drivers on a separate USB device if you followed directions. Once in Windows connect the USB drive with the driver software. It should startup automatically and install the drivers.
You don't even need to do that. As downloading the drivers from within Boot Camp Assistant can be unreliable, it is better to get the package directly from here:

Copy the .zip file to a USB flash drive or burn it to a DVD in OS X. Install Windows as normal, insert the flash drive/DVD in Windows, copy the .zip file to the hard drive, extract it, then run the setup executable.

everytime I try to open the store it endlessly says "accessing iTunes store" but it never opens.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:

  • Installing Snow Leopard but also Boot Camp or Parallels

I have a 2006 MacBook (Intel, core duo) and have a 320 gb HD, 2 gb RAM, running 10.5.8.
I'd like to install Snow Leopard but also would like to partition my HD and install Boot Camp (or Parallels 4.x - I have that version, fully paid etc. but not version 5 of Parallels. Or should I move to Parallels 5 if I move to Snow Leopard?)
I have a full bootable backup (2) on FW400 LaCie External HD's. I have the SL Original DVD.
What is the best way to do this? At present I have 60 gb free space (about 20% of the 297 gb formatted total space available).
Thanks for any comments! Oh, yes - I'm anticipating a new MacBook Pro 13" any time now (Thought the new ones would be out by now!) - Well it will come with SL installed; and I will order one with a 500 gb HD (or larger if available then). Can I migrate my current MB data and files to the new MacBook using migration assistant? But what if I want a partition for BootCamp and Windows (XP likely as I have that)--? Should I partition the new MBP HD first (can I partition it without erasing everything?

Frankly, were you to run Parallels 5 you should have more RAM installed, but your model cannot support more than the 2 GBs you have installed now. You would be better off running Windows via Boot Camp on that machine. However, the new computer will have 4 GBs of RAM installed so it is better suited to running Windows via Parallels. And, yes, if you run Snow Leopard you need Parallels 5.x both for compatibility and performance reasons.
Open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the wide button on the left to print out the documentation. Read it carefully before using Boot Camp Assistant. Yes, you partition the drive without erasing it, but you can only have one Windows and one OS X partition on the same drive. Otherwise it makes no difference when you use Boot Camp.
Your XP must be a retail installer with SP2 and only the 32-bit version. You cannot use an OEM installer that came with another computer.

  • Parallels vs. Boot Camp

Unfortunately we find ourselves in need of Internet Explorer as a site required for work has been built for that browser only. Therefore we're trying to decide whether Parallels or Boot Camp is best for us. Accordingly I have spent hours over the last few days pouring through discussion post after discussion post...
Boot Camp seems to be more safe and secure as any viruses etc... will apparently only infect the Windows partition on my hard drive. Does this mean the remaining OS X partition will be unharmed even if a serious, hard drive crashing virus is caught?
Parallels seems to be more convenient by running inside OS X instead of requiring rebooting back and forth. But following the above thinking, this could expose the OS X hard drive to viruses. Am I understanding this correctly?
In either case how critical would it be to also run anti-virus software when working with IE? Again, it would appear this is more critical if going the Parallels route. Right? And does the AV run more efficiently on Boot Camp or Parallels, or vice versa?
Is this safe? Are we risking headaches in our Mac environment? Or should we simply resign ourselves to maintaining a Windoze machine for EI purposes only?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
    Cheers, Geoff.

Before you go either route, Boot Camp or Parallels, you might want to give this a try.
I have never actually done this, but remembered reading about it through the years. And I do not know whether this works with the current versions of Safari. But it might be worth a try.
In the past there was a way to change settings in Safari so that it identified itself as a different browser when visiting web sites. This would get around a web site which is programmed to only work with a particular browser. Once connected, Safari may or may not work with that web site, but at least it can connect.
Since this is a subject about which I have no first-hand knowledge, I did a search for "browser spoofing" on the websites for Macworld magazine and the Mac Observer. There you will find several articles on the subject.
Might be worth a try if you haven't done so already.
