Internet on a Powerbook 520 thru a Powermac 8600 with serial?

Hi,
I want to be able to browse the web on either my 520 or 1400 PowerBook which both run OS 7.6.1 thru a serial cable connected to my PowerMac 8600 which runs OS 9.2.2. I havent a clue on how to do this and everytime I try I cant get it to work so please give detailed instructions.
Thanks

OK, now we'll reopen the discussion of RAM Doubler that we had a few days ago. Unlike real RAM, RD doesn't speed anything up; it just lets you have more applications open at once than you'd be able to otherwise. It doesn't let you allocate any more RAM to any application than the difference between what the OS itself uses and the total amount of real RAM you have installed. So If you had 64MB of Real RAM and your OS used 40MB of it, and you set RAM Doubler up to triple the 64MB to 192MB (the maximum RD will allow), you would still only have a maximum of 24MB or a little less to allocate to any single application — not enough for a memory-hogging web browser. If your OS and one application together call for more RAM than the amount of physical RAM that's installed, you crash.
But under those same circumstances, you would be able to assign 20-23MB of RAM to each of several applications and have them all open at once — something you could never do with that OS, that Mac, and no RD. So the question with respect to RD is, "Is that something you need to do?" If it isn't, RD wouldn't be worth having.
The fastest 1400 has a 166MHz PPC 603e processor, 512k of video RAM, and no graphics acceleration. The slowest iMac DV has a 350MHz G3, 8MB of VRAM, and a modest graphics card. It's 4-6 times faster than the 1400C/166 for most purposes, and I would expect that to be the case for loading and redrawing web pages.

  • Powerbook 520 on OS 7

Hi guys, just bought a Powerbook 520. It has OS 7 running but no software to speak of, no Claris etc...where can I download some useful software, I need a word processor and TCP internet software.
Also generally where can I find info on old OS 7 x software...cant find much, and no idea wher to look.
    Thanks
    Nathan

Do you have the software for the Global Village modem, if necessary? Is it an external or internal modem? If an original internal modem, could the PowerPort 500 software at
    ftp://ftp.globalvillage.com/pub/software/mac/previous/disk_images
    be of interest?
For the internet, to begin with, you would need TCP/IP software. This could be either a MacTCP or a TCP/IP control panel in the Control Panels folder. Exactly which operating system (see under About This... in the Apple menu at the Desktop level) is installed? The downloadable System 7.5.3 (e.g. British and US) contains this software.
Once you have either a MacTCP or TCP/IP control panel, a connection program (for example, MacPPP 2.5.3 here) would be needed.
Finally, a suitable browser is required. WannaBe is small enough to fit onto a floppy. By means of this browser you can then download (from http sites only) larger files (for instance, the iCab browser) directly to the PowerBook 520.
Nisus Compact could perhaps be an alternative word processor.

  • Powerbook 520 RAM work in a Powerbook 1400?

    hi,
After reading both the Powerbook 1400 and the Powerbook 520 Technical information manuals it says that they both use the same type of RAM (low power DRAM). My Powerbook 1400 has 24MB of RAM and my Powerbook 520 has I think 12MB of RAM. Can I add those 12MB of RAM to my Powerbook 1400?
    Thanks

    Apple Rules
From any practical vantage point, no. The PB500 expansion cards are a different size (wider than the space available in the 1400, and not stackable), and have different connectors from PB1400 cards and connectors. That both kinds of card use low-power DRAM is the only similarity.
PB500 series 'Books use PSRAM. PB1400s use TSOP lowprofile RAM chips.

  • Powerbook 520 with no OS installed

i recently acquired a powerbook 520 and judging by the fact that when i try to boot it and i only reach a screen with a floppy disk and a flashing question mark, i assume there is no OS installed. it is my belief that one can download system 7 from the apple website to install on an old machine such as this, however could someone walk me through how i would create the floppys ? preferably i'd like to create them on my relatively old pc lappy which has an inbuilt floppy drive, however if this is not possible i can search for my long lost USB floppy drive and create them on my ibook g4.
    thanks for your time.

Yes, you can download a free System 7.5.3 from Apple, e.g. the international English version here. The individual files are small enough to fit onto 1.4 MB Mac-formatted floppies. Once decoded (by StuffIt Expander for Macintosh, preferably on the PowerBook 520), the twenty segments constitute one single disk image. You place the segments (one .smi and nineteen .part) in a common folder on the hard disk. Double-clicking on the first segment (.smi) will mount the total image. The installer can be found in the thus mounted image.
Since the aforementioned system download does not contain a bootable floppy, the first obstacle will be to make such a disk. You could try doing this in your USB floppy drive connected to the iBook (running in Classic?). However, it is necessary to use a disk-image utility that can create a sector-copied floppy directly from a Disk Copy 4.2 disk image (e.g. via the Make A Copy button in Disk Copy 4.2 or the Make a Floppy command in the Utilities menu of Disk Copy 6.3.3). The Network Access Disk 7.5 here contains a suitable disk image.
If you use a PC, things will be more complicated. The following is only to give you an idea of what to do:
Download the freeware utility Aladdin Expander 2.0 (try a Google search for the exact file name).
A disk-image utility for PC will also be needed. For example, the shareware utility WinImage 6.10 (winima61.exe here).
Install the programs on the PC.
Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB (HD) diskette through the FORMAT A: command in DOS (or via the "Full" formatting command under Windows).
Download the Network Access Disk 7.5 .bin file (NetworkAccess_Disk7.5.sea.bin). The Windows operating system may truncate the file name. Drag this downloaded file (as it is) onto the Aladdin Expander 2.0 icon (on the Desktop). Aladdin Expander will decode the file into an archive (document) called Network Access Disk 7.5, and automatically decompress the latter into a Network Access folder.
Inside the Network Access folder you will find a Read Me document and a file called Network Access.image.
Insert the empty PC-formatted diskette into the PC's floppy drive.
If WinImage is used, drag the Network Access.image onto the program icon. In the WinImage application window, select Write disk (from the Disk menu) or click on the Write disk icon. When the operation is completed, immediately eject and lock the diskette.
You should now have a startup floppy for the PowerBook 520.
The procedure is a variant of a method described in the 68000 FAQ (here). This is an exeception to a general rule. Normally, do not decode or decompress MacBinary (.bin) or BinHex (.hqx) files until on a Mac.
Start the PowerBook from the Network Access floppy. Check whether the hard disk is visible. If yes, it is probably wise to erase it (if not already done). Use Erase Disk from the Special menu for this.
It is possible to drag-copy the system folder from a Network Access floppy to an empty hard disk. This will provide you with a temporary system in order to free the floppy drive for subsequent file transfers.
A ready-to-use version of StuffIt Expander for Macintosh (4.0.1) can be obtained through a PC like this: Download MACDISK.EXE here. Prepare an empty PC-formatted 1.44 MB diskette via FORMAT A: under DOS or the "Full" formatting command under Windows (this is important). Launch the MACDISK.EXE program on the PC. Follow the on-screen directions. The result will be a floppy, complete with a StuffIt Expander installer, that you can immediately use in the PowerBook.

Tutorial: Installing Classic over a current Mac OS X installation

The only way to install OS 9.2.2 is using the install CD/DVD that came with the Mac, since these are special versions of OS 9.2.2.
If you just want to run classic mode, copy the System Folder from another Mac that has OS 9.1 (or better with 9.2.1 or 9.2.2) installed. A USB thumb dive works great for this. Transfer the folder to your Mac. It won't interfere with your OS X system which is in a folder titled System.

  • Powermac 8600/300 TV as monitor

I connected my PowerMac 8600/300 to my TV so the TV can be used as a monitor thru the AV ports but it looks horrible. You can barly see the icons and stuff. Its running OS 9.2.2.
    Thanks

    AR,
The purpose of AV out is to send a signal to tape for recording. If you are editing video, you are not watching it full screen in real time. That is why Quicktime gives you a small viewing window for speed and acceptable low resolution.
I have an 8100 that was given to me because early Avid video editing software was so buggy. It is fun to play with but it quickly reminds me why G4s are required for efficiency. Software has come a long way since the 8100 era ( the software actually ran on an 840 AV, too). Few machines can handle code fast enough to give full screen full time viewing. So, after editing the video, Avid software allows you to save in several formats, one of which is broadcast quality. Only when you take an hour or two of rendering your work to achieve high resolution will you get the output to your VCR that will look aceptable on a TV.

  • Turning Powermac 8600 into a full webserver

    Hi,
I have a PowerMac 8600 running Mac OS 9.1 and I want to turn it into a web server so I can host my website on it and people will be able to connect to my website via the 8600. NOTE (I dont want this just for my network I want it for the whole world to be able to see my site not just my network). How do I do this? Thanks

The DHCP lease period is usually set for a day or two by default. If you were to turn them all off, not use them for two days, then turn them back on in a different order, they would get different addresses. You can adjust the lease period to a shorter time if you want to mix them up a little.
DHCP makes it simple to set up networks up to hundreds of computers without having to write down and remember all those address assignments -- with no risk of duplication of addresses. The fact that it is simple and stable in your environment tells you it is working great.
The next thing to think about is the Subnet Mask. It is four 8-bit bytes with a 1-bit for every address bit that should be considered. 255 is 8 1-bits ON. A Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 says that any computer that has the same first three bytes of its IP address the same as mine is on my Subnet, and can talk to me.
Based on the addresses you have for your computers, your router probably responds to an address like 192.168.2.1, which is on the same Subnet as all the computers. So anything going to the Internet is sent to that router address to get its address changed and be forwarded on to the Internet.
This address change (some describe it as putting the packet into a bigger envelope) is called Network Address Translation. The router supplies its Upstream IP address (not the same as the 192.168.2.xxx as your computers see) as the source on these bigger envelopes being forwarded out the WAN connection, and responses come back to the router's Upstream IP address. This Upstream IP address is not on the subnet with your local computers, so a router is required to send packets to it.
Depending on how your ISP has implemented Upstream addresses, this address may be different tomorrow, and may or may not be Internet-visible.

my macbook pro is connected to internet via my time capsule but my iPad and iPhone won't. it shows wifi connection to the time capsule but when i go on to the internet on the iPad or iPhone, it comes up with network error. can anyone help?

This can be caused by a number of issues.
Was everything working and then suddenly stopped??
Or is this a new clean setup and has never worked.
Do you have a cable modem which is not a router and the TC setup in bridge? That will cause it. The TC must be in router mode, ie dhcp and nat.
Check the IP the MBP gets including dns and gateway..
Then check the ipad/iphone.. post what IP dns and gateway (router in applespeak) they get.

I have a PowerBook 145B but something is wrong with the systemfolder so it wont boot. I've downloaded System 7.0.1 from Apple and put it on Floppys with my Macintosh Classic. The PowerBook boots from the floppy but after a minute it just comes up a window thats completely white.
I've tried a lot of things, but my Macintosh classic (with original floppys) runs 7.0.0. And the PowerBook needs atleast 7.0.1 and did run 7.1.0 as original OS.
    How do I fix this?

Because your PowerBook 145B shipped with OS 7.1, it can't run an earlier version of the Mac OS, such as 7.0.1.  Unfortunately, Apple never made OS 7.1 available for download.  You can run OS 7.5.1, 7.5.3, and 7.5.5 on your PowerBook, but I'd recommend doing so with the maximum amount of supported memory - 8 MBs.  The 19-part download of OS 7.5.3 is segmented, so that each one will fit on a 1.44 MB floppy disk.  The problem is that the 19-diskette set isn't an installer set as such, having no bootable disk.  It's solely intended to be used to transfer the individual segments to the resident hard drive in the computer.  Once that's done, double-clicking the first .smi segment creates the OS 7.5.3 installer disk image on the desktop, which you drag onto the hard drive icon.  This produces a folder with the OS 7.5.3 installer in it.  I've done this before with an old Mac LC and it works.  You can also download the 3-diskette OS 7.5.5 Update and run that.  These downloads can be found on the same page where you found the OS 7.0.1 download: Older Software Downloads.
