Internet on iPod Touch?

hi, all - I'm thinking about getting an iPod touch since I have to by a Mac for school and they're having that offer where you get a free iPod. Anyway, I was wondering about something and couldn't find a clear answer on the website anywhere.
I know one is capable of going on the internet and checking email and all that jazz on an iPod touch but is there an extra fee for that? Do you have to pay monthly? If so, how much? Just wondering...
Thanks!

The iPod touch can connect to the internet via a WiFi network.
If you have a wireless network set up at home, your iPod touch would be able to connect to it. No charges.
You may also be able to connect to public networks. And these networks may or may not have charges associated with them. Some wireless networks are free to everyone, whereas others charge hourly or daily for use.
So, to answer your qestion, there are no monthly fees that you'd pay to Apple to access the internet on an iPod touch. But, depending on what WiFi network you connect to, there may or may not be charges for usage.

  • I can no longer connect to the internet with iPod touch

My ipod touch just stopped connecting to internet at home and elsewhere. Because it won't connect, I am unable to retrieve the serial number from the settings, which is what Apple support requires before they will help me. The other problem I have is that it won't stay charged and the date/time changes. This happened before I could make the most recent update. Any ideas?

    What model iPod?
I suspect the battery is on its last legs or another hardware problem based on the numerous problems but try:
Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tends to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Sharing internet with iPod touch

Now, what I have is a MacBook with OS 10.5.4 installed and my Internet connection is through cable modem and it's a Ethernet Connection and I want to share my Internet through Airport with my iPod Touch.
I have followed the instruction about "Sharing your Internet connection", but it is still not work.
In my iPod touch, I can see the IP Address 168.254.13.167 and the Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0 only. The Router and DNS is blank. Also when I open the safari with iPod touch, the error message " Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server" is shown. Why is that? Please help me and sorry for my english.

Try unplugging the cable modem, wait, and then plugging it in again.
-----> I tried, but it's still not work
Is this your system: cable modem -> Airport (expess? extreme?) ---- Macbook / iPod Touch?
------> For my system, cable modem -> Macbook (Airport extreme)
Is there another router in the picture? The 168.254.13.167 IP address doesn't look like an Apple IP. It should look like 10.XX.XX.XX.
-------> what do you mean of "in the picture"
Also the System Preferences>Network>AirPort, in the Status field, is said "the AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet. "

  • How do I get internet for iPod Touch 4G through Computer/Laptop?

Ok well i heard that its possible to connect an iPod Touch 4G to a Computer or laptop with Internet and then have internet on the iPod so is that possible?

If the desktop or laptop is running Windows 7 then the native hosted network functionality built-in to Windows 7 Ultimate/Enterprise/Pro/Home Premium that turns a wireless (WiFi) equiped machine into a wireless router maybe an option.
Look at using either Connectify or Virtual Router (both free) that provide a nice GUI to configre the function. Note this only supports WPA2 encryption (very very important) by design.
    http://www.connectify.me/
    http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/
There is also mhotspot which does something similar.

IMHO though a wireless router is your best bet if its in your budget. That way all of your wireless devices can access the internet wirelessly and not dependent on any other computer on your network.

  • Need internet for IPod touch?

Okay, just spent the money to buy and iPod touch. Have the latest iTunes software on my XP computer but the problem is i dont have internet at my home right now. Apple tells me i should be able to take it to a place that has internet, like libary or my friend's house, and after syncing it up, take it back to my home and transfer songs that i have on my PC to the iPod.
Guy from the store i bought it said i DO need internet at home.
Someone help, i want to use the iPod so badly but if i dont have internet at home, i dont want a $300-$400 paperweight at my home, just something to download my songs to.

So both were right. i will be able to download songs from my home computer to it, but for updating it and such, i need access to my friend's computer. *****.. just gotta think if i want to take it back or try using it that way.
If anyone has anyother advice, leave me a note.. thanks to all

  • Got internet on iPod Touch; lost it on laptop

I recently used the forum to set up an internet connection with my iPod Touch, but when I got it, I lost my network connection with my laptop.  I know I've probably set something that shut off access to the network when I followed a forum member's directions to give the IP to the iPod. Any suggestions as to what I need to do now?  I have the WRT54GS router.

This is the process another forum user gave to hook up my iPod Touch to the internet.  Then I was unable to access the internet with my laptop.
I have had the same problems reported but finally figured it out. I have a Linksys G router so this is what I did. I decided to start from scratch so I turned off security and enabled the SSID so the IPOD could see the network. Once connected, this can be turned off again.
Whatever your settings are, this is going back to basics, and if your router is not set up as described, you may want to check it out. Otherwise, your neighbor should be thanking you for a free ride to the internet. If your settings are already set up as described, use what
you already have. I have my router set up to be a DHCP server which gives the IP to the IPOD.
    1) sign in to your router via Exploror, firefox, etc.
    2) go to the tabs Wireless/Basic wireless Settings. Set the Wireless SSID Broadcast to Enable. Save the change.
3)Now go to the Wireless Security tab and set the Security mode to Disable. Save the change.
    4) Go to the Wireless MAC filter tab. Set the Wireless MAC Filter to Disable. Save the change.
    5) Now go to your IPOD and WI-FI settings. You should see the name that your Router is broadcasting. Select it and the Check Mark should appear by the name. Now go to Safari and bring up a URL site. This should be working. If not, try resetting the network settings on the IPOD. If your router is set for DHCP broadcast, and if you go into the IPOD settings you will see the IP address that was assigned. Make a note of this IP as it will be used later to help identify the IPOD's MAC address.
    6) If you can connect, we'll now add security back in. The steps below should be turned on to lock down your network. I also suggest to change the Master Login and password for the Linksys Router.
6b) While your at it, on the router go to Status/Local Network and click DHCP Clients Table. If you compare the IP address you got on your IPOD with the one in here, write down the MAC address next to it. This is your IPOD's MAC address. This will be used to put in the another
    table.
    ** Now Let's Lock it Down. **
    7) Go to the tab as in step 2 and disable your SSID. Make sure you can still browse. Turn off the IPOD and reconnect to make sure you can still browse.
    8) Go to the tab as in step 3. Set the security mode to WEP. Set the Default Transmit key to 1. Set the encryption to 128 bits. Put in a Passphrase off choice. Example, 'IPODisforme'. Hit the Generate button. The value you get in Key 1 is the PASSWORD the IPOD keeps asking for. Save the settings. Turn off the IPOD and connect to your router. It should now ask for the Password. Put in the 26 Hex Digits. I'm not sure if they are case sensitive, I put in upper for the letters. Once done, you should be able to browse, still.
    9) You should now have SSID turned off, WEP enabled, now the last step is to only permit the MAC address of devices you want on your network.
    10) Go to Wireless/Wireless MAC Filter and select the Wireless MAC fileter to Enabled. Also make sure the Permit Only is set. Go to the Edit MAC Filter List and put in the MAC address you copied down earlier. Make sure you Save the change. Try the IPOD again.
    11) That's it. Hopefully it's all working fine. I hope this helps some of you who are having
    problems. Good Luck.

  • Locking out internet on ipod touch

My daughter has an Ipod touch she loves. My problem is she is viewing items on the internet thru it which doesnt work for me. Taking the device from her will be a problem. I dont see a way off locking her out of the internet using the restrictions with passcode. Are there any other solutions?  I see I am not alone as there is a lot of people looking for solutions from Apple. I read someting about a app which offers content filtering.

Please read Restrictions (Safari) on page 106.
There have been some problems accessing pages on the Apple web site.  If the hyperlink gives you a "We're sorry" message, try again.

  • Unable to connect to internet with iPod Touch

    Hello,
I received an iPod Touch for Christmas but cannot connect to my wireless network at home.  I have spent a lot of time talking to Apple Techs and they tell me that I need to update the firmware of my router.  My router is an Actiontec MI424WR.  When I attempt to connect, the iPod says it "connects" to my SSID but when I launch the browser, it says "cannot open page because the server stopped responding."   The IP adddress on the iPod starts with "169" but Apple says it should be "192."  Apple says the router needs to be updated with newer firmware.  Can anyone direct me as to how I can update the firmware for this router?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

I have the same router that you have. In my house we have a 1st gen and a 2nd gen iPod Touch as well as a 1st gen iPhone and 2 2nd gen iPhones that all connect to the Verizon router. I did have to redo the settings on the 2nd gen iTouch several times before it would work. I do not know if I was fat fingering the WEP or what but once it started woking on xmas morning it has been fine since.
Just go thru and triple check your WEP key and make sure that you are entering it in correctly and you should be fine.

  • Need help setting up Network on iMac so I can WiFi my iPod Touch

Have 1st Gen iPod touch with Stanza app (book reader). Need to set up WiFi Network connection on my iMac (Leopard 10.5.5) so I can connect to internet with iPod touch and download books into Stanza. Need detailed info on how to do this, please. I've tried using the setup assistant in Network, but nothing I enter works. I use BellSouth DSL internet service, so don't have to log in each time I turn on DSL. It appears it's a DHCP configuration. Can anyone help me with this, please. Thanks very much.

Thanks for your reply, Julian. Actually, I'd had my iMac set up properly since last Sept., but my brother has now moved in with me and he also has a new iMac and a new iPod touch and I was trying to remember how to set up the network on his Mac so he could use his Mac with his iPod touch to do his downloads using the network connection from his own computer. I do not have a router. We share our BellSouth DSL modem by simply moving it from one Mac to the other when we want to get on the internet. Both Macs have built in Airport, which is what I know I'd been using - I say BEEN using, because today I really screwed up my Mac when I was trying to remember how to set up the network and now I can no longer use my iPod touch-to-iMac WiFi function either.
When I first set up my network, I got help from someone in a forum and thought I'd printed and kept the very simply instructions he gave me, but I can't find them. I seem to remember him telling me I'd have to get my Mac's IP address, which I have, but when I go thru the network setup assistant it doesn't ask me to enter it anywhere. Also, the setup assistant tells me that I can't connect automatically to the internet, which is not true. I don't have to log in when I plug in my modem - I'm automatically connected.
I'm familiar with internet sharing, cause that's what I've been using when I downloaded apps updates, etc. But now, I can't even get Airport to turn on. The more I try, the more confused and frustrated I get. I'm usually pretty good with this kind of thing, but I'm completely baffled now.
I do want, and think this is what I was doing before I screwed things up today, to share my Mac's wired internet connection to the iPod touch wirelessly, as you said, and which is what I'd been doing. Can you help me? It was so easy the last time I did this, but I just can't get it done now!
Did I screw things up because I already had one network set up on my Mac and was trying to set up another one on my Mac (just to test it out before I tried to do it on my brother's Mac)? HELP!
    Thanks for your help.
