Internet Only Time Capsule Works FLAWLESSLY!

I recently decided to go back to using my Firewire800 G-Drive for Time Machine. The funny thing is it only took 45 minutes to backup 99 gigs and each and every backup only takes 3 seconds. Anyways.
My question is, now that I am NOT using Time Capsule for backups (until they work out the MANY bugs) can I just go into AirPort Utility and erase my Time Capsule? I want to be sure that my now perfectly working internet wont be messed with.
-------The following will explain my experience with TC and TM------
Guys, its truly amazing how terrible this device is (in terms of wireless backups).
(It once took 20 minutes to backup a 60mb file. This is crazy.)
Now that I am not using it for Time Machine backups, it works FLAWLESSLY!!! Blazing Fast internet!
I know I should just return it and get a AEBS but soon all the bugs will be fixed. I just can stand loosing internet EVERY time it backs up and watching it take literately forever to backup a small file. Even when going into TM with the TC it is LAGGY, BUGGY, SLOOOOW! With a 500GB FW800 G-Drive, Time Machine is crazy fast, not buggy, not laggy either.
Hopefully Apple will soon just concentrate on fixing all of this. For now all of my problems are entirely non-existent anymore. No more dropping internet connection, super fast Time Machine, extremely fast internet, and my iMac doesn't lockup due to consistent backup failure with Time Capsule.
-------end-------
So please let me know about the erasing TC thing. For now, I will use it as a wireless hard drive. I just want to erase everything without messing anything up. (Keep in mind that my Time Machine is no longer looking for the TC, only my FW800 G-Drive)
Thanks for everyone who tried helping me.
Cody Porche'

I dunno, right now I would not trust anything that TC does or has done in terms of backup. I am in the same situation as you. I have a great wireless router that is the most terrible backup device I have ever in my life seen. I would def get rid of any backed up data you might have from TC. It is prolly useless anywho and to return such a poor backup to a healthy computer makes no sense at all. It is a great wireless router though! all backups tried here have failed and Apple Care is at least 35 minutes.I am toast on this issue of backups though. I do hope you get it running some day.I of course hope I do as well! Please keep us posted.

    Do the usual wireless things.
Change the wireless name to simple name with only alphanumerics and no spaces.
Set to manual and use channels 1, 6, 11 in turn.
For testing take off the security altogether.
The iphone only works on 2.4ghz so only that band is relevant.

  • How does the time capsule work?

I am unfamiliar with this device. Can anyone explain how this works? I have a Gateway NV79, an IPad 2 and an IPhone. Will the time capsule work with these devices and a printer(Officejet Pro 8600)? If so, how does it do this? I am also wondering how it works as a router? Does it provide the internet access itself or do you have to have a separate source of internet to link to the device?

A Time Capsule is a wireless router and a hard drive in one package. It does not have a modem built in, so a modem and broadband service is required if you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
As a wireless router, the Time Capsule can provide connections for up to 50 users and 3 wired Ethernet devices. If you need more Ethernet connections, a switch can be easily added to the Time Capsule for that purpose.
Your printer could connect to the Time Capsule using either a wired Ethernet connection or wireless connection
Apple's literature does a good job of describing the product. Be sure to click the links in the upper right hand corner of the main page to learn more about the Backup capabilities, Wireless performance, and detailed Specifications.

  • No internet with Time Capsule

I cant get internet through my time capsule. When i run network diagnostics, the network status says that:
Airport, Airport Settings, Network Settings and ISP are fine, but the Internet and Server have failed.
I use a cable modem from virgin media.

I've just installed time capsule with one airport extreme - which is all working fine except that I now can't get into the internet: somehow, I've ended up with two wifi networks - a new one one that the Time Capsule works with but no internet and one that connects me to the internet but not Time Capsule (the wifi network I had beforehand)
I've connected my original wireless modem to the Time Capsule via an ethernet cable. Airport utilities tells me this cable is not connected so I suspect the problem is something to do with that.
Do I need a wireless modem at all with Time Capsule?
Unless you expect problems with range, you might try replacing your AirPort Extreme with the Time Capsule. There are ways to get them to work together, but you'll probably be happier and have less hassle just doing the replacement.
I'd start by using the "Manual Setup" option of AirPort Utility to do a "File -> Save A Copy As..." of your existing AIrPort Extreme configuration. Then connect the Time Capsule in its place and use "File -> Import..." to bring your old settings into the TIme Capsule. There are probably some things you'll need to tweak, but the old settings will at least get you going in the right direction.

  • Connecting Cable Internet to Time Capsule

I know this is dumb, but I'm tired! I'm trying to set up Time Capsule using my cable internet. Time Capsule obviously does not have a coaxial cable port, so how do I actually get my internet feed into the Time Capsule? Do I need to keep using the router provided by Comcast and only use Time Capsule as a wireless backup? Thanks!

You don't need to keep Comcast's router, but you do need something that can operate as a cable modem.  Depending on the exact details of your Comcast service, something like this device.
If you don't want to go that route, you should put either the Comcast router or the Time Capsule into "bridge mode".  You're better off not having two devices both acting as a router.

  • Since installation of Mavericks, Time Capsule works very slowly, and the next backup of 236 GM will take nearly 30 days. What can I do to get backup more rapidly ?

Since the installation of Mavericks, Time capsule works very slowly and will need 30 days or more to produce a complete backup of about 200 GB. What can I do to get a complete backup more rapidly ?

What setup is the TC now.. ? what model and what firmware? Maverick seems to need 7.6.4 on the older TC.. and latest firmware on the AC version.
Is it in router or bridge mode? Do not use wireless only.. join a wireless network.
Is the computer connected by wireless or ethernet? I strongly recommend a test by ethernet.. with wireless in the computer turned off. If it is still very slow something is majorly wrong.. but I need the info I asked for to troubleshoot further.

  • DirecTV DVR HR20 connect to internet via Time Capsule

    Hi Everyone,
I've searched and come across various topics about connecting the DirecTV DVR to the internet via Time Capsule, but none of them seem to provide a solution for wireless connectivity.
Can anyone point me to a topic where it describes the steps and any issues related to getting my DirecTV DVR connected to the internet via the Time Capsule wirelessly.
I have gone through the setup and I get connected to my network, but I get the error when it tries to connect to the internet.
Do I have to do any port forwarding or anything special?
I use to have my Netgear supporting this configuration, just purchased the Time Capsule and now I cannot get my DVR connected.
    Thanks for the support
    Jeff...

The Direct TV DVR has an Ethernet connection on the back, which is strongly recommended if you intend to download movies or any kind of high definition material.
If you are trying to use the new Whole Home feature, wireless is not supported by Direct TV for this service.
If you are trying to connect to the DVR using wireless from the Time Capsule, you must be using some sort of wireless to Ethernet bridge device.
What device are you trying to use?
Have you verified that this device is compatible with the Time Capsule?
As a test, connect the adapter/bridge to your laptop and turn the wireless off on the laptop. Open your browser to see if you can get an Internet connection.
If you can, you know the network connection is good and the focus shifts to the DVR as the source of the problem.
If you can't, we'll need to figure out if the adapter you are using will work the Time Capsule.

  • Can the time capsule works without WLAN cable connected to my DSL router?

Cna the Time capsule work without WLAN cable connection to DSL router?

WLAN is usually used for wireless LAN .. plainly you mean WAN port ..
How do you expect to get internet if the TC is not connected to the internet?
The TC can work stand alone.. true enough but that will then involve considerable issues in setting up two different IP addressing regimes .. you can just bridge the TC and use it as WAP and switch plus hdd without having to route.

  • I can't connect to internet using Time Capsule router.

My hard drive recently died. I took the iMac to the Apple store and had a 500 GB hard drive installed. I disconnected my Time Capsule so the Apple rep could restore my data. Now when I try to reconnect to the internet via Time Capsule router, it won't connect. The cable modem is fine, and the Time Capsule's status seems OK with the green light. It even seems to be backing up OK. I don't think I did anything differently, other than unplug it in order to have the Apple rep restore my data. Any thoughts out there?

It sounds like the cable company neglected to mention to you that you must completely reset the modem whenever you change the device that it is connected to. That's because the modem "associates" with a device and "remembers" the settings.
If you then change devices, the modem will "look" for the old device that was connected to it and it will of course not "find" it, so it won't connect.
That's why you need to do the complete sequence that I provided.
If you still cannot connect after the complete reset, then you may have a defective modem. I'm not trying to pick on the cable company....and yours may be an exception...but the last time my modem was having problems, the provider kept insisting that "everything looks good". But, they always say that.
I turned the modem off and called them back an hour later and they still said "everything looks good".
An Ethernet cable has a slightly wider plug than a phone cable. If that's the only connector on the modem, then it must be the right one. Ethernet cables do fail. You might want to check your cable, just in case.

  • Does Time Capsule works as a External Hard Drive?

Does Time Capsule works as a External Hard Drive?

The Time Capsule works as a network drive.
An external drive connects to your Mac using either the USB or FireWire ports.
If your real question is to ask whether you can store other data on the Time Capsule drive....you can.

I like the idea of auto back-up for my new iMac, Ipad and PC Netbook, particularly if I can access all files and data stored on any device.  But I have a Conceptronic router.
    1. Will Time Capsule work with this and how?
    2. Can my printer USB be plugged in and then shared between the devices?
    3. Can I create a network and how?
    4.  What happend when a visitor logs onto my existing wireless router?
I'm new to Macs (well a returning user having started with Mac Plus!!) and not very technical.  Any help / advice will be much appreciated.
    Ray

The key to what you seem to want to do is to be able to get Apple's Time Capsule router to "join" the network that your Conceptronic router.  I believe that works with some third-party routers, but I've never seen a list of those that work in such a configuration and I have no experience with Conceptronic equipment.
You might be better off with a Network-Attached Storage (NAS) device instead of a Time Capsule.

  • My time capsule worked for several weeks and is now telling me backup disk not available? What to do?

My time capsule worked for several weeks and now is not backing up. Tells me backup disk not available? Any suggestions?

    This is a lion bug..
Generally just rebooting the TC will get it back. Otherwise you need to reset the TC and redo its setup.
Tell us a bit more.. but there is as yet no work around or fix for lion.
Certain things help.. but wireless is also a weak link. It will generally work better by ethernet.
Try and get back if it is still bugging you.. I can suggest some other things.. but I do not know of or read a bullet yet.
(Snow and TC firmware 7.5.2 which I run do not have this issue.. so the bug was introduced with Lion and 7.6 firmware)

  • Windows XP won't connect to Internet via Time Capsule AE

I've got a MacBook Pro and MacBook using Airport Extreme via Time Capsule. I recently partitioned MacBook Pro and added Windows XP via Boot Camp. The XP sees the Airport but cannot connect. I've added the same key to XP as used for Mac access, but it still doesn't connect.
Its a WPA2 Personal Key. XP allows WEP, WPA, and WPA-??? (there are three other letters there that are NOT "2" or "Personal"). It allows one of two "types" that are TKIP or AS? (Three letters that I can't remember.) I'm completely lost.
I also tried changing channels, but that's frustrating unless I just change from the PC end. I had been changing them on the Mac, then rebooting to XP to see what happens. (Nothing, so far.)
Has anyone successfully gotten XP on the Wireless?

XP wireless to a Time Capsule works fine. Problem is, as you've found, choosing the right wireless security, then entering the key in the right format.
Because of this problem in mixed OS X / XP networks, I've stuck with WEP. It's less secure, but it works!
I live in a rural area, so wireless security isn't really an issue.
Try reconfiguring your TC to use WEP. Once you've got it working, investigate the other security options.

  • Just installed a new time capsule and i want to use my airport express to extend my wireless range....time capsule working with existing devices at this time...but i am not able to get airport utility to recognize the airport express.....????

just installed a new time capsule and i want to use my airport express to extend my wireless range....time capsule working with existing devices at this time...but i am not able to get airport utility to recognize the airport express.....????

Temporarily connecting your AirPort Express to one of the Time Capsule's Etherent LAN <-> ports...as LaPastenagure suggests....is always a good way to setup and configure other network devices.
If you want to configure the Express using wireless, remember that the Express broadcasts a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must log on to this network first....no password is required....then open AirPort Utility to "see" the AirPort Express.

  • Problem connecting Dell Inspiron 6000 to internet via Time Capsule.

    Hi,
Unable to connect Dell Inspiron 6000 to internet via Time Capsule.
I get this "Windows is unable to connect to selected network. Network may no longer be in range". Any clue?
    Thanks.

    What modem do you have?
Is it a router? What mode is the TC being setup in, bridge or router?
Is it cable modem? If so did you power cycle the modem for the required time.. it might be 30min or just 5min or many hours depending on the ISP.
    Tell us more.
For mavericks please ensure your network connections have ipv6 set correctly.. ie link-local.
