Internet over ethernet, none over Extreme Base Station

I have optical cable to the house (no modem involved). When I connect directly to my mac, the cable company hands out a 64.xx.xx.xx IP address and I get blazing internet. When I connect to the AEBS it hands out a 10.xx.xx.xx IP address (I don't remember ever seeing the cable company hand out that kind of IP address before). Everything appears as if it should work, but I get no internet. The AEBS is set to share a single IP address using 10.xx.xx.xx addressing. The cable company has MAC addresses for both the iMac and the AEBS, so it should work. Everything was working before macworld... any thoughts? Much appreciated.

Before yesterday, the airport extreme base station (AEBS) was connected to my cable from the internet company and working just fine (receiveing a valid IP address and all). Yesterday, I get home from Macworld and my wife tells me we haven't had internet. Upon investigating, I find that the IP address that my AEBS is getting over DHCP is in the 10.xx.xx.xx format. My AEBS is still connected to the cable from my ISP and my computer is getting a full reception over my network with the AEBS, but no internet. I then connect the ISP's cable directly to my iMac over ethernet and PRESTO! a valid IP address in the 64.xx.xx.xx format and internet. My ISP tells me it's probably my AEBS. Today I hard reset the AEBS, re-configured it and got the same negative result (an IP address in the 10.xx.xx.xx format). I have an airport express (express) and decided to try that. I reconfigured it as a base station, and it worked...temporarily. Initially I got a valid IP address in the 64.xx.xx.xx format, internet worked great. I moved it around the room a couple times trying to find an optimal location and it started having the same problem as the AEBS, the only IP address it got from my ISP was an invalid or non-working IP in the 10.xx.xx.xx format. The only similarity between the "outage" of the AEBS and the express is that they were plugged into the same outlet when they went "out". My wife said that yesterday, prior to the AEBS going out, it had accidentaly been unplugged from the wall, and then immediately re-plugged. I'm convinced it's either a power surge issue of some sort which fryed them both (except I am getting an IP address, albeit an imperfect one), incompatible firmware, a virus, or my ISP... I'm really hoping it's the ISP.

Ethernet modem to extreme base station trouble

Hi
I am having trouble connecing my ethernet modem (DSL 300t) to my airport extreme base station.
The modem works fine plugged directly into my computer.
The base station seems to be working fine when it is not connected to the modem.
It was suggested that the problem was due to a DHCP conflict... I have tried a number of things including turning the modem to 'bridge' mode only (no success) and turning the option on the base station to issue IP addresses off (limited success - worked for a while then connection dropped out, also I got a few messages saying "The IP address 82.25.182.107 is already in use by device 192.168.1.1" which is the address used to set up ethernet modem using browser).
Since I have very little idea what most of the paragraph above really means would someone be able to give me a simple step-by-step solution?
Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks for the welcome and the advise. Unfortunately it did not do the trick.
When I restarted the 'internet connect' window said I was connected but I couldn't open any webpages or connect anything to the internet.
However as I said above, when I disabled the base station from distributing IP addresses I got intermittant access - I am wondering if this will help point to a solution?
Otherwise; it is possible to use the modem only as a bridge, but when I tried this the only way to put in ISP account information seemed to be using the PPoE option in 'network'. Then all I get is a message saying "searching for PP host" (or similar) which it never finds... is there a method to set it up this way that will work?
Any further advise would be much appreciated as there is not very much detail that I can find in the airport manual about this.

Airport Extreme Base Station as an wireless Extender to new Airport time capsule

After many months of time machine back up problems. (verify back up failing) I am considering biting the bullet and getting a new 2TB Airport extreme time capsule. Can I use the old (late 2013 801.11ac) airport extreme to extend wifi network?
A few other questions.
1.Does extending reduce wifi performance?
2. If using extreme as extender can I still plug in hard drive or hard drive to it?
3.
currently using imac 21.5 (late 2013) 1TB backing up to 6TB WD mybook live duo (connected to Extreme using ethernet), via airport extreme base station (ac wireless band to mac)

Is it possible to quantify how much faster USB back up is compared to 802.11ac between mac and AirPort time capsule?
600GB should take 10 hours by ethernet. And it will be somewhat faster by USB3.. exactly how fast is difficult to predict as the first TM backup itself is slow due to many small files. In terms of raw speed maybe twice but it will depend on the disk used. USB you can use an SSD and get super huge speed. (not that I think you will be buying a 1TB SSD anytime soon).
In terms of raw speed it is cheese and chalk. The max speed of real world file transfer on AC wireless is around 430Mbps and that is using ideal world.

This has nothing to do with link speed.. this is how fast a file actually transfers. And that is assuming the iMac and the TC are in the same room. And everything is perfect with nothing else using connection.
The real world speed of USB3 is around 100MB/s to a spinning hard disk..

which may indicate the limit is the actual disk speed. In bits per second you x 8.. so the USB3 is 800Mbps. The advantage of USB direct connection is that speed is available at all time. Not when your close or the load on wireless is low.
Further to your comments when extending. Is it only the area covered by extending that has reduced performance or all the wifi signal?
The speed will depend on hops..
So if the computer is using resources on a local router.. and only one wireless hop then it is fast.
If it is using resources via a second router so wireless goes.. computer--- router2----router1-- resource.
Your speed drops 50% at best.. at worst it is really bad.
For example.. computer 1 on router 1 accesses computer 2 hard disk on router2 with everything wireless.
Count the hops. C1-R1, R1-R2, R2-C2
That gives 3 hops. So each packet is transmitted.. along that chain.. each transmission can only begin after it is received in full. Now add some other computers using resources.. say C3 is using internet via R1.. that has to be time sliced. So you get 50% of 50% of 50% of 50%. It is obvious that wireless networks have a huge handicap.. they cannot transmit and receive at the same time.. nor can they talk to more than one client at a time.. so add time slicing to wireless hopping.
Now ethernet is entirely different. It can transmit and receive at the same time.. ie is duplex. And in a switch it can talk to several computers at the same time. That is why we say.. as much as you can ethernet.. and use wireless as the last single hop to a client that needs it.. ie iphone or ipad.. or laptop if you cannot plug in ethernet.
Can the ac wifi format be extended using AirPort Extreme and time capsule.
Over very short range yes. AC wireless is only on 5ghz and is poor penetration of solids.. so this will work but maybe only to the next room.

Problem consistently printing via new (summer 2011) AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION and Brother wireless printer (model HL5370DW). What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help you folks can offer. I'm a newb here and will try to offer as much detail as I can about the dilemma at hand.
Scenario: Home network has been recently set up for wireless internet access via NEW Airport Extreme Base Station (purchased September 2011). Units accessing the network include: 2011 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Air, 2007 Macbook, 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and a 1st-gen iPad (and a partridge in a pear tree AEBS is configured to run WPA2 encrypted network, as well as a WPA2 guest network. I am attempting to yoke a BROTHER HL5370DW wireless B or G/ ethernet / usb-capable printer to the main network such that any and all units can print wirelessly or its equivalent (i.e., via printer hooked to AEBS through USB hub)
Problem: Despite configuring the Brother printer to recognize the main WPA2 network I created, I am unable to get wireless printing to work. My workaround was to physically connect Brother printer to AEBS via USB, specifically using a Belkin USB hub (after all, I wanted access to usb drives, as well as the printer). This workaround works ONLY SOME OF THE TIME. Generally, after a fresh boot of any computer or after a restart of the AEBS, any given computer will be able to print (i.e., any computer wirelessly connected to the main WPA2 network recognizes the printer). HOWEVER, at random times, printer access is gone (as is access to USB drives connected to AEBS's usb hub). Wireless networks are still up and running when that happens. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE USB HUB's devices (i.e., printer and usb drives) to ALWAYS REMAIN AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THEY STAY CONNECTED TO THE AEBS? In other words, what accounts for the intermittent loss of the usb peripherals?
Sometimes, I just shut the airport off on whatever computer is having this problem, and the problem goes away. Sometimes, the problem is present across all computers in the house, sometimes only a few are affected. I can ALWAYS see the AEBS in the Airport Utility if the AEBS is connected to the particular computer via ETHERNET CABLE.
My theories:
- true wireless printing (i.e., without usb hub workaround) doesn't work because the N network somehow isn't backwards compatible with the Brother printer, which, i believe, is B/G. Although...isn't Wireless N networking supposed to work with BG devices? I did find a thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570774?start=0&tstart=0 ) that explains some of the particulars of WPA2 encryption and Wireless B/G issues, but it was beyond my level of comprehension (I'm a psychologist, but not an Apple Genius
- The usb workaround is only intermittently viable because of some flaw in the Airport or Airport Utility that causes dropouts to happen when a Macbook Pro or Air's lid gets closed or one gets opened after having been at a different network (e.g., at my office).
QUESTIONS:
- Should I try to use my old router (7 year old Linksys WRT54G) as an access point and connect the Brother printer to that G-router? How do I do that?
- I wouldn't mind just relying on the usb hub method if I could just insure more consistency (i.e., no random dropouts of peripherals). How could I do this?
Rule out:
- wireless printing works on my printer - it was being recognized back before the AEBS. I had the Linksys router running a WEP network and had the wireless printer talking with no cables to the router and the computers. (I just don't want to revert to using WEP encryption given its lack of security and my trying to protect HiPAA related health information on behalf of patients)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If turning off WEP works, then you just need to
provide the cameras with the "Equivalent Network Password".
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual
standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit
WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain
algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords
(or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use
of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than
lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different
vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX
key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be
hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice
versa.

Brilliant idea about trying the system with No encryption on... that DID solve the problem... almost.. once I turned off the encryption option, and restarted the Airport, I got a dialog box showing that the "Base station needs attention" but it didn't indicate WHAT kind of "assistance" it needed. Nonetheless, I closed out of the Airport program only to find that the indicator light, which had been Green, was now, flashing Yellow and I could not connect anything, including my computer. I opened the Airport program again and found the ONLY way I could get the Green light on was to select some sort of encryption option... then the light would go Green again but my cameras would not hook up again, and when I went back in and ONLY changed the option to NO encryption, I got the yellow flashing light and the "this base unit needs attention" warning...
I think your suggestions are almost on the mark... is there any way of reconciling the WEP coding between the cameras and the Airport??? Or turning off the encryption option and STILL have Airport work?

Windoze Ad-hoc networks killing Airport Extreme Base Station

After having a horrible experience with an Orinoco base station sometime ago at his coffee shop, a client of mine asked me to install a new Wi-Fi access point to replace it. Since I'd never had a problem with my graphite Airport Base Station, I selected recommended that he try the Airport Extreme. Everything was been fine for over a year and half, with only the occasional interference problem, and even that easily fixed by a restart on the base station. Lately that has changed. We're in Baton Rouge, and since Hurricane Katrina, our population in our city has doubled (that's not an exaggeration), and the number of customers using the network in his coffee shop has increased as well - although it's still well below the maximum. The problem is that there are is large number of students from Loyola, UNO and Tulane who are now attending LSU, right across the street. And a significant fraction of those have ad-hoc networks set up on their Windoze notebooks, apparently unintentionally. When they come into the coffee shop their ad-hoc networks seems to cause the Airport Extreme to die, and not recover, until it is reset. This happens many times per day, sometimes more than once in an hour.
It had been configured to automatically select a channel, but I re-configured to use a specific channel (and have been experimenting with the particular channel). It seems to reduce the problem for a time, but then we'll have the problem back in force within a few days.
I have verified (using iStumbler) that there are no other "managed" networks near-by, and I have noticed that the problem ALWAYS happens when there is are ad-hoc networks, and after politely asking customers if I can check their settings, (it's scary how many people will let you poke around on their computer, if you seem like you know what you're doing) I've also seen compelling evidence that it is Windoze users, not Mac users, who tend to cause the problem. Incidentally at this particular coffee shop the Windoze:Mac ration is something like 60:40. What can I say, it attracts discerning customers. Since some of them have "lsuwireless" set up as an ad-hoc network (and as I said, LSU is across the street), my guess is that somehow these get set up, not on purpose, but accidentally, while trying to connect to the university's wireless network. Apparently the process is not so straight forward for Windoze users as for Mac users.
I have upgraded the Airport Base Station software to the latest available as of last week. Though I don't have that version number available at the moment.
So I have several questions:
1) Is this really the same radio interference problem that I've read about elsewhere on this discussion board?
2) Would an external antenna on the base station help? How about a powered one?
3) Aside from "Use Interference Robustness" and trying different channels, is there some configuration setting that I might be missing that could enhance the base station's reliability?
4) Does anyone have a suggestion for a permanent fix - preferably without switching to a different access point, although at this point, that's a viable alternative. After a year and a half of stable operation though, we're loathe to switch again unless it can't be avoided, because the Orinoco access point we used before had behaved exactly like this, but even worse, and without necessarily having ad-hoc networks being present to cause the problem.
5) Failing any other good solution, can anyone suggest a way to determine which computers are causing the problem without having to interrupt each customer to poke around on his computer?

I have an Intel based iMac and a MacBook Pro. Both
are (well until tonight) connected to the internet
wirelessly through the Airport Extreme Base station.
I've had no trouble up until now. Tonight for some
odd reason the MacBook Pro Airport card fails to
detect the Airport Extreme Base Station. It detects
OTHER wireless networks around the building, just
not the one it's supposed to connect to. Opening up
Airport Utility doesn't even show the Airport
Extreme Base Station being present. I know the Base
Station is not at fault - it works fine with the
iMac. Tried setting the Sharing mode on but that
didn't help either (not that I changed any of the
settings to begin with).
Can anyone help? I'm really at a loss here.

Why does my AirPort Extreme Base Station lose the internet when I unplug my printer Ethernet cable?

I just changed ISPs to Qwest from Speakeasy. New modem. Now my etherneted (from extreme base station) printer (Brother HL1870N) doesn't work.
And if I unplug the printer ethernet cable from the base station, the base station loses the internet connection.
Any help would be appreciated.

2 airport extreme base stations later and still no internet connection-

Sorry - yet another beginner with internet connection troubles! (I have read all the posts I could find relating, but without any help).
I have had a Demon broadband account now for about a month (I’m in the UK) and in that time I have purchased a D-Link DSL-300T Ethernet modem and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I got wireless internet working relatively easily – with a powerful range over the whole house and garden, but then one Sunday night, the internet connection via the base station suddenly ‘died’.
I spent the following 3 days scrutinising all of my settings of both the Modem and the Base station, re-setting both, and bought new Ethernet cables / micro filters etc but with no luck. (I’ll point out at this stage that my broadband account is still active, and if I connect the Ethernet modem directly to my iBook [wired] I can still get my broadband connection. Alternatively, I tried daisy chaining the modem to the base station and then via an Ethernet cable to an iBook, but no connection could be made).
When wireless, Airport Admin recognises there is a modem there, and under preferences > network under Airport it states I am connected to the internet – but I’m not.
I then phoned D-Link and they confirmed my firmware was up-to-date for use with Apple products and talked me through all of the modem settings and tweaked a few things, but there was still no connection to the base station. I then phoned Apple. They were incredibly helpful (as ever) and after 35 min. came to the conclusion the base station might not be re-setting itself properly. The replacement one came yesterday, and again I spent a number of hours trying to get it connected to the internet, but there is still no internet connection via airport and I can confirm this from both my eMac and iBook.
Reading through the forums on here, I understand that my particular modem is problematic with the base station, but I can’t work out why it use to work and now it doesn’t! One theory I have investigated is that the firmware of the base station is two advance for the modem following an update, but after reinstalling the original firmware I started with, I still have no luck.
- The eMac is running 10.3.9 / iBook is running 10.4.3. The base station is reinstalled with the latest firmware via system update. The first base station and the modem were delivered to me 31/10/05.
Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated if anyone has any ideas

I printed off the instructions you posted on the support forum before, and ran through your procedue exactly, (twice) but I'm sorry to inform you that I haven't been able to re-establish my wireless internet connection. Would it be safe for me to assume at this stage that my modem is indeed fualty? It contines to work fine independantly, (I'm using it right now) but it can't seem to make contact with the basestation.

Extreme base station worked, but no internet,... now locked out.

Situation:
Cable modem connected to Extreme base station. Powerbook G4 with 10.3.9 and iMac with 10.3.9 connected by airport to base station. This has been working for more then a year. This morning I had no internet connection on the G4 or the iMac.
Actions taken:
- resarted base station -> no result
- restarted modem -> no result
- checked connection to Base station -> good wireless connection; I could ping the base station, but nothing beyond
- connected Powerbook directly to modem by cable -> internet works
- checked settings base station -> base station seemed to obtain a normal IP address trough the modem
- hard reset of base station -> no result
- upgraded firmware to 5.7 -> got message "An error occurred while reading the configuration." when using the airport utility
- tried using password 'public' -> same message
- connected by cable to base station -> same message
So things certainly didn't improve since this morning. What else can I try?

Today I upgraded the airport software on my Powerbook and was able again to connect to the Base station and use the airport utility. But I still could not connect to the internet.
Your post made me rethink my troubleshooting. I did restart the modem, but never disconnected it for more then a few seconds. I just tried it again, left it unconnected for over a minute and now it works again.

Airport Extreme Base Station and Multiple Computer Access to the Internet

I have my IMAC connected to the internet via the Airport Extreme Base Station. When I am able to connect, my son's MacBook cannot. If I preform network diagnostics and reset the base station so he can connect (which appears to be luck on my part), I can no longer connect. When I first set this up, I had it working with all computers in the house. I tried to expand the system to boost the signal in our house with the airport express units. I have since removed them and started over, but still cannot provide internet access to more than one computer.

Try this first...
Modem/Router Power ReCycling
- Power-off the DSL/Cable modem, Internet Router, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
- Power-on the DSL/Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Power-on the Internet Router; Wait at least 5 minutes.
- Power-on the computer(s)

Mac Book pro can't connect to Internet through Apple airport extreme base station

I had problems connecting to the internet in the past with my macbook pro. One day it suddenly started working again but then I bought a second apple TV I lost connectivity. I have tried changing the IP address manually and while it shows me connected to the wifi I am still with out internet. When I hooked up the new Apple TV that I bought it booted my computer from it's ip address. The apple TV though wouldn't work and now nor would my computer. I ended up setting the Apple TV's ip address manually and now it works fine. My computer on the other hand does not no matter if I set it manually or not. Even if I plug in the ethernet cable from the base station it doesn't work. It show that it has a self assigned IP address. After I set it manually it shows that I am connected both via wifi and the ethernet cable but I can't connect to the internet. If I plug the modem directly into the computer bypassing the base station I get internet and it is using the IP address that worked originally.
It has something to do with the connection from the base station to my computer but this is odd considering every other device I have: iPhone 4, apple tv, apple tv, apple mini with retina display all work perfectly via wifi (newest apple tv had to be set manually as I stated above but now works fine). When I check the ip of the base station itself it seems to be different from the ip of the computer when the computer was connected directly to the router. I don't understand why my computer now can't connect to the internet via the base station whether it be wifi or by ethernet. Can you please help me trouble shoot this?

Please post some screenshots of your AE setup from the airport utility.. I want to see the summary page, then the network and internet tab.
Please tell us what modem you use.. is it a router??
If you have satellite or 3G wimax etc service they often are limited to 5 IP addresses... the AE takes one and then 4 more devices can join .. no more.
You need to also give us the screenshot of the IP you are getting in a computer that works.

Extreme Base Station suddenly dropping internet connection

I have an Extreme Base Station (802.11n Fast Ethernet) which has been providing wireless internet and printing to two imacs pretty flawlessly for several years. It seems to be a fairly simple network. DSL modem (to WAN port) and USB printer cable plugged into back of Base Station.
Several days ago, the Base Station began dropping connection to the internet every few minutes. If I connect the modem directly into the computer, I have no problems with losing connection. So, I began looking for solutions online and have been trying everything I could find to do. I've scoured the forums here, and everywhere and read a bazillion posts.
I've done a hard reset of the Base Station, I've tried different channels, I've unplugged, waited ten minutes, and replugged in a myriad of sequences, including unplugging both the modem (Zhone/Paradyne 6381-A3) and Base Station overnight. The only thing I haven't done is roll back the firmware (currently 7.4.2 I believe). I'm still experiencing the same problems and am at my wits end. I've spent hours now trying to fix it and need to do other things like shop for groceries and vacuum! So, I'm posting, in hopes someone might be able to point me in a more productive direction.
Is it possible the Base Station hardware is failing? What are the signs and symptoms? I hate to spend another $179 and still have the same problems.

I know that this reply is two months since this topic was initially posted.
This is a longstanding Airport Extreme ( AEBS ) problem that's been noted since 2006-2007.
It has been an ongoing issue for me -AND- I continue to experience it even after recently upgrading my AEBS.
I finally called AppleCare in mid-Sept. and opened a formal problem case report.
As of today (Oct 15, 2010) I still have an open & unresolved case with AppleCare.
The problem has been escalated twice -and- is now referred to Engineering Dept for research & resolution.
I was curious what steps or actions you have taken -and/or- if you still experience the problem.

Many users have posted messages regarding problems with Airport Extreme *+DROPPING CONNECTIONS+* .
However, with careful reading, it becomes obvious that many forum posters are not sufficiently clear
-and- often confuse or do NOT make the distinction between ..... DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONNECTION PROBLEMS.

If you suspect that you are having the *dropped internet connection* type problem,
YOU CAN CHECK & WATCH IT HAPPENING IN THIS MANNER
Set Airport in Menubar to *"SHOW TIME CONNECTED"*
. *- +and also+ -*
Open Airport Utility --> AIRPORT --> SUMMARY window
.... and leave it visible somewhere on your screen while you web browse.
Now, once the internet connection drops or is lost ...
... in the Airport Utility Summary window - you will see the loss of the assigned IP Address
. *- and -*
.... in the Menubar - the time connected will reset to 00:00:00
If you have a new or ongoing problem that relates specifically to ....
.... Airport Extreme – dropping or losing *Internet Connections* ... ( +not wifi connection type probs+ )
.... please let me know.
I would like to be able to correspond directly with others via email to share info
(such as what modems, ISP's, time of day or conditions with which this problem has been found to occur)
I will then be glad to pass that info on to AppleCare in trying to find a cause (and solution) for this problem.
If this issue was treated collectively maybe AppleCare would address it with more resolve & urgency.
I'll check back with this thread for replies from other interested users.

I have a AirPort Extreme Base Station with Gigabit Ethernet 802.11n ?

I have the 802.11n Airport Extreme Base it went bad so Apple Sent me a new one to put into my
office where I have a iMac 24" 2.4ghz with really fast internet
I also HAD a AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11g and AirTunes G not N so when I received the
new 802.11n Airport Extreme I sold the Airport Express 802.11g now my Macbook Pro 17" 2.33mhz
which is in my family room and that is also where the Airport Express with iTunes was located
now my internet is like really slow on the MBP 17" I have 5 bars in the pizza menu bar but my
internet speed is really BAD on the MBP 17" and I have 16mg speed on the net
+BIG ? DO I NEED TO BUY A 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station with 802.11n and AirTunes??????+
TO EXTEND THE RANGE OF MY AirPort Extreme Base Station with Gigabit Ethernet Which is in my

You asked if the network could be wirelessly extended and that is what I replied to.

Wireless connection to internet with mac pro tower and airport extreme base station?

Hi, I have an airport extreme base station and a mac pro tower without a airport card. My internet wireless router is a great distance from my computer so I can't connect the base station directly to the router. I've attached the airport extreme base station to the tower via an ethernet cable, the base station seems to be wirelessly connected to the home network but the browser is showing "not connected".

Shouldn't the Airport base station be able to connect to it wirelessly?
It might be possible, but the Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme would not be enabled, even if it did connect to the Thompson' WiFi signal.
As Tesserax notes, among the Apple routers, only the 802.11n versions of the AirPort Express have the capability to "join" a wireless network with the Ethernet port being enabled.

Airport Extreme Base Station Internet Connection issue

I have a connection question for Airport Extreme Base Station.
I have Comcast cable broadband. I connect that to a Linksys router for
use with my Vonage phone, and then from the Linksys router I connect
via Ethernet to my iMac. I like the direct Ethernet connection for
performance reasons.
In order to set up a home network to connect my Tivo's (and eventually
my PC and printer), I have set up an Airport Extreme Base station and
connected it to the Linksys router from it's ethernet connection to the
WAN (cable modem) input on the Extreme.
I have connected to the Airport network with my iMac, but since I am
connected to the Internet via Ethernet, I cannot tell if my Airport is
connected to the Internet so that I can use it for my Tivo. My PC is
still in storage from a move, so I can't check with that.
My question: How can I tell if my Airport is connected to the Internet
without disabling my Ethernet connection on my iMac?
A few more info points/questions in case it helps answer:
1) I previously used this Airport to connect this iMac wirelessly.
2) Should I be connecting it to the LAN port since it's coming out of
the router?
3) If the connection issue is because I am going through the Linksys
first, can I connect the modem to the airport and then use the LAN port
to connect to the Linksys router?
4) If I have to disable the ethernet connection to test the Airport,
how do I do it? Just unplug it?
I appreciate any help as the online and manual help from Apple is not
quite up to par with such a complex configuration.

No, connecting to the WAN port is fine.

The issue is that you have two routers which effectively creates two networks. Unless this was your original intent, you will want to setup the AEBS as a bridge.
To set up the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as a bridge, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, make these settings:
Network tab
- Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
- Apply the new settings.
- Wait at least 5 minutes.
4) If I have to disable the ethernet connection to test the Airport,
how do I do it? Just unplug it?
Well, that's certainly one way, but an easier way is to temporarily disable the "Built-in Ethernet" in your network configuration.
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
- Built-in Ethernet (unchecked)

Internet over ethernet, none over Extreme Base Station
