Internet Page Loading has slowed to a crawl!

I have enjoyed fast broadband service on my Mac Pro using Att's DSL service with a 3 megabit connection. Just recently when I click on a link or a bookmark, I am waiting a long time for the page to load. I have reset the DSL modem a few times without any improvement. Any ideas?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Go to ~/Library/Caches and delete browser related cache, such as "Metadata" for Safari
If your ISP has a speedtest page, try that if you haven't yet.
Use the OpenDNS IP addresses.
See if there is a firmware update for your modem/router.
Did you just recently install any security updates?

You're not the only one with this problem. There is a long discussion, with some proposed solutions, in this thread (and searching for "slow" in the Pages forum will bring up other threads as well).

  • SLOW INTERNET PAGE LOADING

Hi, I bought my IMac G5 last May just after the Tiger release. My problem is the time it takes for internet pages to load, which considering I have a broadband connection at a fairly fast speed, is appalling. This problem has existed since I bought the Mac and hasn't changed. I tried to bid on ebay last night, the item had 1 minute 30 seconds to go so I put on my bid and sent the page. By the time the page had refreshed the auction had ended, so you can imagine my frustration. I did post here a few months ago but no-one came up with any suggestions, I was also hoping that there would be an update or something to correct this problem but there doesn't appear to be. This is my first Mac and I love it apart from this one very annoying thing as I do use the internet alot. Anyone have any suggestions???
    Imac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Thanks for the info, I still haven't managed to whip a keyboard from work to try as yet but still intend to. I have a few other ideas that maybe others could advise on. I read a letter in this months Mac format mag regarding USB modems basically advising against using them in preference of an ethernet modem/router. Im not to au fait with what these are/why they should be better but I have got my hands on one from a friend and tried to install it earlier, it seems though, that I am going to have to spend over an hour on the phone to my ISP trying to get info out of them for it to install properly (this I am not looking forward to although I will persevere).
The other thing that I thought maybe the problem is with my ISP. I pay for upto 2mbps broadband connection but I have heard that some companies can cap this. Im not sure how they do it and whether it would affect download or upload/page loading. I have sent them an e-mail to see if they can advise.
Other than that I will assume it is the G5 as I cannot think of anything else, but as you can see I have quite a way to go before I can pinpoint the problem.
Again any advise on the above is very much appreciated,

  • HT1222 My internet speed has slowed to a crawl after installing security update 2015-003.  Any ideas on how to fix?

I have a mini mac with 8GB ram and running yosemite OS. I recently installed security update 2015-003 and now my internet connectivity have slowed to a crawl. sometimes if I turn wi-fi off and then back on the speed returns to normal but sometimes it does not.   Any ideas what may be causing the slow internet speed?

Please check the speed of your connection on this site.
Then start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Check again. Then restart as usual and post the results.

  • How do I stop automatic loading of the next page as I scroll to the bottom of an internet page that has a number of pages?

When I search with Google, as I scroll to near the bottom of the page, the next page of results automatically loads. I can never get to and use the similar searches, or "Searches related to ***", which are at the bottom of the page, as the next page loads and focuses at the top of that next page. Also, there is a bar with the page number, and a field with a "Jump to" command with a pop down arrow with page numbers, and up and down arrows beside it which go up or down one page if used.
This does not happen with, say, Bing, nor if I use Int Expl (aagh).
I have no autopage type of add-ons, or plugins.. I may have had an add-on at one time. There are a bunch of autopager "strings", or lines, in about:config. How do you remove them, if that is the problem?
How do I stop this from happening? It is extremely annoying.
    Thanks,
    SK

  • Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!

    Hello,
For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
    My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.
    Thank you for your time.
    John

Your RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata
There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why.

  • Web pages loading EXTREMELY slow

It takes FOREVER for any web page to load (we're talking like several minutes even to load Google search), but it shows I have full signal strength. However, my husband's MacBook is functioning fine as well as his PC which all use the same network. I have an AirPort and AirPort extreme. I've even tried directly connecting to the AirPort extreme to see if that would help the speed problem, and it did--but only for a few minutes. After that, it displayed the same problems as before--MIND-BENDINGLY SLOW page load. I've cleared the cache, history, renew DHCP, reset the router... everything I can think of and still to no avail.
This all started happening after I was using my MacBook to connect my XBox360 to the internet and had to change some of the MacBook settings. I have since restored all the settings and turned off Internet Sharing.
I took it to the Genius Bar, twice, and they said it has to be my network, because it connects and loads pages at lightning speeds when I'm on the Apple Store network. Ugh. This is sooo frustrating and has basically rendered my mac useless.
    Ideas?

Here are a couple things you can try:
    1) If possible, bypass your router, and connect directly to your cable/dsl modem.
    2) Try a different DNS (domain name server). This can resolve the problem if the slowness stems from looking up (i.e. "contacting") the web server. You are probably currently using the DNS of your ISP. Since your husband is not experiencing the problem, this might be a stretch, but still worth a shot. You can try OpenDNS (https://www.opendns.com/start/)

  • Why has my native windows 7 Pro-64 network to a windows 7 Pro-64 VM has slowed to a crawl and freezes, after the new Arris cable modem was installed?

Please appreciate the details, so the complete situation can be visualized:
    The office network:
New Mac Mini PC running Win 7Pro 64, (in boot camp), networked to an iMac running the same Win 7 Pro 64, VM, UNDER Fusion 7Pro.
To review: My treatment rooms former dell PC/running vista business/ running the server and network versions of my Dental practice mgmt & X-ray capture apps, had no probs WLAN to the front desk iMac running the same PC client dental network apps under the same vista business, & Fusion 4. The dell slowly fried its power supply .
I could not wait to replace it with a Mac mini/ boot camp/ win7 pro 64 bit, as it has to run natively to capture X-rays. The front desk iMac was also upgraded to os10.10.3/ Fusion 7pro/ and its own matching Win7 pro 64bit. The iMac is wired and WLAN connected to a netgear d600 router and a Time Warner Cable  modem. The modem then failed and was replaced by an arris modem. As the Arris was configured out of the box, the network ran much slower slowed, as compared to the original modem. BUT-  The Vonage 2 line phone system stopped working- no incoming or outgoing voices could be heard after it rang. Then twc remote configured it and the phone now works, but the network iMac slowed to a crawl, and now freezes when accessing the Mac Mini PC dental server to edit or enter data. The Mini perfectly accesses the internet via wifi. It accesses the front desk canon  printer by wifi, and can print share they the iMac that is wired to the printer, as well, BUT, the network connection is a spinning pinwheel. The front desk imac easily finds the Mac Mini PC server on the network. It connects easily by entering the servers IPv4 address SHOULD THAT last value change.  But if data isn't entered in slow motion, the window and app freezes, and has to be force quit by Task Manager!
    Cause:
    1. I think TWC switched the cable modem from the default- Non Bridged, to Bridged mode. Could this be the cause?
    2. The network setting in fusion, on the iMac is auto detect, a setting that always worked with vista and with the new Win7 system, before TWC installed the new arris modem. 3. Switching to NAT does not work at all is there a different setting to use?
    3. Does the Netgear Router  have to have a port or pref configured so as not to block the  Server.
    4. might in need an Access Point (I have an extra netgear wdr3400) ).
    5. Do I need an Extender that plugs into the AC LINE?
    I hope this info helps.
    PS:(some addtl info:
    1. File sharing works fine between the minis -Mac and boot camp sides and between the iMacs- Mac and VM sides and between eother side to or from either of the 2 computers! 2. Also  either office computer and all of my my home macs , (& my iPad, & iPhone), can access each other instantly and flawlessly, with splash top streamer and jump desktop remote apps, as controller or as client!  In fact, the front desk iMac can remote control the mini PC AS IF YOU WERE DIRECTLY ENTERING INFO I TO IT!
SO I think it's either a misconfiguration in the TWC cable modem  &/or some additional pref to config in the router? Thanks so much for your help, (been using VM's since VPC1. & Win95 in a iMac, 1999, DV MODEL! (TWC BLAMES VONAGE FOR NOT OPENING SOME PORTS IN THE TELE MODEM. Vonage blames TWC FOR NOTopeningj ITS PORTS IN THE CABLE MODEM, when they meant the ports on the Netgear.  They have passed the buck for 6 weeks with not even a guess at what to do. VERY FRUSTRATING!  Again, thanks to all!

    Okay Saint Steven, I'll bite:
I read your description multiple times, very carefully, and I am still confused. May I suggest the following:
    * Follow basic troubleshooting procedures. Isolate each individual problem. Don't try to get everything working at once. Make one change at a time.
    * If I read your description correctly, the Netgear D600 (??) Router is the office LAN (not WLAN). Connect each piece on the LAN separately one-by-one, and test each piece individually. Get your LAN and its devices working first. Forget about the Vonage and the Arris Cable modem.
    * Next, look at your Internet connection. Again, try each piece separately. Depending on how the original cable modem and the new Arris cable modem are configured, you may also have to adjust the configuration of the Netgear D600 Router.
    * Finally, if you are still having problems, try to organize your thoughts and presentation before you post again. List each element in your network. List how each element is configured. Be systematic.
"Arris cable modem" does not help much - some are simple bridges, others are routers, etc.
    To answer your questions:
    1. I can't tell from your confusing description, but I don't think so. It seems like the problems are associated with the system changes you made (replacing Dell, etc.) and the problems seem to be isolated to the local LAN.
    2. Auto detect should work, but it is easy to change and test, as long as you change one thing at a time.
    3. No. The Netgear router should allow all communications on the local LAN. Could you have put the "server" in the DMZ?
Note: I could not find a Netgear "D600" model in a web search. Do you mean N600?
    4. No. I doubt that you need an additional access point. Based on your description, everything appears to connect to the LAN.
    5. No. See 4.
    To repeat myself:
    * Do careful, systematic troubleshooting.
    * Provide carefully written, detailed description of your network and system configurations when you ask for help.
    Good luck!

have installed 10.10 on my iMac (mid 2007) 2.4 GHz me 2 GB which has slowed to a crawl

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Apache Help! Computer has slowed to a crawl & no net access

After following tutorials: firstly here, and secondly here, my laptop has slowed to an excruciating crawl, when the machine boots it asks for my username and password when the Sys Prefs are set to auto log in. It also can't access the net anymore.
It was able to utilize PHP files located in the /Library/WebServer/Documents (http://localhost/page.php), but when trying to use http://dev/sitename it would fail and I received an error on line 2 upon execution of "sudo apachectl configtest" when no typos were present.
I've tried putting everything back the way it was originally but have had no luck.
    Any ideas? I'm dyin' here.......

Follow up: Was never able to fix the mysterious issue. I did an "Archive and Install" and that seems to have fixed the problem.

  • Premiere has slowed to a crawl. Please Help

Hi, I am a photographer and video editor. I built my computer about 15 months ago to work with CS5 and the Mecury Playback Engine. In the past few months it has been slowing down at an alarming rate. Over the holidays I created a video montage of pictures from my brother's wedding and Premiere kept stopping with an error that read something like 'Open GL driver failed' adding something about 'lack of memory'. I had to switch to software mode and avoid playing the timeline (to avoid rendering each photo, there were well over 100) so I could finish it in time. And now a project I am getting paid for will no longer play back smoothly. I get about 1 second of smooth video before it starts jumping and freezing all together. The audio continues but the picture does not. Here's what I have.
    Intel Core i7 950 (quad core) 3.07GHz
    12.0 GB Ram
    Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1 fully updated
    Nvidia GTX 470 w/ 1280 MB GDDR5
         current driver. 285.62
C: 60GB SSD for system and programs 4.64GB free
E: 300GB 10000 rpm 16MB cache VeliciRaptor Drive for Project files preview files/scratch disks and such 134GB free
    G: 1TB 7200 rpm 32MB cache Barracuda Drive for Assets 158GB Free
I have 2 other drives but they are not used in this workflow.
    Page file = 36859MB automatically managed on drives C:, E:, and G:
My Power Usage plan is set to High Performance.
I am editing in Premiere Pro CS5.5.2 (003 (MC: 258762))
The programs I have running in the background are: Realtek HD Audio Manager, NVIDIA Settings, Zone Alarm (security), Dropbox 1.1.45, Spyder3Utility, and as of today Spybot.
The Project is a short 10-12 min Documentary type video. It's mostly interview footage with various B-roll interspersed. The main timeline I use is 4 video and 4 audio layers. The fourth layer in both is turned off to holding stuff. There is not much in them. Layer 1 is pieces of another timeline. That timeline consists of 2 layers of interview footage from 2 angles with a third audio track from the zoom recorder all synced and color corrected. I adjust opacity here to pick which camera angle to use, but cut this timeline together in my main timeline to minimize sync problems and added color correction steps.  In the main timeline, video layers 2 and 3 are B-roll. audio layers 2 and 3 include one short sound effect and a few pieces of music. Some of the music has been slowed or sped up to fit the timing needed. Premiere quickly renders that sound when I start up the project or make changes to those files in the timeline.
All audio is either MP3 or WAV files.
Most of the video is Canon DSLR footage (5D mkII, 7D, and 60D I believe). All 1920x1080 30p (a couple 24p by accident) there are some Jpegs, TIFFs, and one PNG file. Many of the pictures are housed in sub timelines with 2 layers. one with a moving picture and the other with a Gaussian blurred version in the background to fill the frame. There are some timelapeses that are of various sizes but nothing smaller than full HD. 2 are MP4 videos and the rest are quicktime.
All my timelines are preset for DSLR footage at 1920x1080 30fps.
Almost the entirety of my timeline has the little yellow line over it indicating that we should be hardware rendering this footage.
A few things about how I have worked with this computer. I built it for CS5. When I first started using it, it was brilliant. Lately The whole computer has slowed, a lot. last week I uninstalled some extraneous programs and tweaked somethings. Most everything on the computer is now running back up to snuff. Premiere is not. It is too the point that I cannot edit and a new edit of the project is due this Friday. When I first started using this computer I got some noise from the GPU and CPU fans when I would load up a heavy duty project. That made sense it was making the computer work. Now I get almost no noise from either fan and the thing runs like crap when I am editing. This doesn't make sense to me. Has something changed with an update of Premiere that changes the way it leverages the hardware, cause I doesn't seem to be doing that at all. Or might I have unknowingly flipped a switch somewhere that changed that leverage. In the Project Settings the Video Rendering and Playback is still set to Mercury Playback Engine GPU Accelerated. On the same line I have noticed much less fan noise when rendering with Media Encoder. I can't say I've seen a huge hit in performance there, but it doesn't seem to be taxing the GPU like it used to.
Please help if you can. I don't have time in my life to start the computer over with a fresh install on windows. Thanks so much.
    Michael

I see nobody has suggested you delete your preferences.  I do that whenever any app, not just Pr, starts acting strangely.  I think with Pr on Windows you launch with the shift key held down.  If that's wrong, somebody please correct me.  I use a program on Mac called Preference Manager to keep good copies of preferences, because they get corrupted so easily on FCP especially, and also Ae.
Here's another general rule I employ, when Pr (or any NLE) starts behaving badly.  It could be you have some corrupt media, which will cause your app to hang or quit, which you haven't described, but I suppose it could just bog things down.
Load a totally different project with totally different media.  Does Pr work fine now?  If so, your problem project may be corrupted, or it may contain corrupt media.
Make four copies of your sequence.  Delete all but the first 1/4 of your sequence in the first copy.  Now, does Pr work better?  If so, great!  You've just determined the issue is in the last 3/4 of your sequence.
Now, delete the first quarter, and last half from the second copy.  And so on.  Repeat this until you've found the section that causes your problem.  Then subdivide that section until you've isolated the problem footage.  Remove or replace that footage item with a non-corrupt version.  Or, learn to live without it, or try transcoding it to another format, etc.
You also mentioned that you're using Nested Sequences, right?  These have been a problem for me in a few projects, mostly with exporting, but worth a shot maybe:  Render out the nested sequences to a lightly or uncompressed codec, and replace the nested sequences with the rendered file.
This is a long shot, but hey, you've got to start using the process of elimination to get to the root of your problem.
If Pr works lousy no matter what project or footage you load, that suggests there's something wrong with the install of Pr, or some other OS, virus, hardware or driver related issue.
I'm throwing a lot of ideas out there, and here are some more:
Open your Task Manager, and rig it so you can see the CPU performance.  Are your meters clipping, or running at full bore?  If so, your CPU may be having trouble keeping up with all the Long-GOP decoding you have going on.
Transcode your MP3 to WAV, and replace in the Timeline.
Transcode your Long-GOP material to an intraframe codec, and replace.  A lot of Windows users use Cineform.
I'm fixating on your remark that when you started, things were "brilliant," but have since bogged down.  That's why I was thinking VM, and also I can see how your continuously adding elements to the Sequence are slowly causing more challenges for the CPU and GPU.
I'm looking forward to your fixing this, and letting us know how you did it.

  • Guest Portal web page load is slow and timesout on occasions

    Hi All,
I'm hitting a rather unusual issue with our Guest WLAN users.  Firstly let me describe the topology:-
2 x 5508 WLC controllers one Foreign and one Anchor.  Mobility tunnel between the two WLC's as the Guest WLAN is on the WLC sitting in the DMZ.
30+ 2702i AP's running in FlexConnect mode for Dot1X WLAN and Central Switching for Guest WLAN.
Cisco ISE 1.3 acting as Radius server and providing Authentication and Authorisation policies.
Dot1x Authentication and Authorisation works fine with Dynamic VLAN assignment based on AD memberships.
The issue is with the Guest WLAN is that from a security perspective we weren't allowed to use the Central Web Authentication using L2 MAC filtering with the L3 Security of None as described in Cisco Document: 115732.
So the Guest WLAN has been set up with no L2 security and the L3 Security of Web Policy with Web Authentication to External Server i.e. Cisco ISE and RADIUS override on the Advanced tab of the Guest WLAN.
So a client connects to the Guest WLAN SSID > receives the DHCP IP address hosted by the Anchor WLC and then one opens a  browser types in the URL and the Security message is presented > Continue to this website (not recommended) selected and the process of receiving the Web Redirect Sign On Web page begins and hangs around forever.
Depending on the Client i.e. Apple IPAD the sign on page loads correctly although can be slow to start with but a successful login is completed, but with windows clients and MAC Air books there is an issue with the browser either timing out the page and a retry is necessary or we can't move beyond the following page -  https://x.x.x.x:8443/portal /PortalSetup.action?portal=194a5780-5e4e-11e4-b905-005056bf2f0a?switch_url=https://1.1.1.1/login.html&client mac=00:23:4e:86:98:3c&wlan=GUEST&redirect=www.cisco.com/
Any suggestions would be really appreciated with this as it's creating a lot of frustration.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
Yes Guest Cert will need to be external. Because Guest Users if they have a non-corporate laptop for example will not have your Internal Company Certs installed in their browser (that you loaded onto ISE), so they cannot trust your internal Cert.
If your open Firefox or IE under Options/Security View Certificates you will see a list, if its a Guest you will see well known public Certs like Geotrust, Verisign etc.
For my setup I brought a GeoTrust cert and loaded this into ISE, this way Guests will always Trust the Geostrust ISE cert like https://guest.com for example and the login will appear and be trusted.
