Internet problem on university network

Hello,
I have a macbook pro with 10.7.5. And i am connected on internet with ethernet cable on my dormitory.
Since 2 days i have a lot of problems with internet : most of the time webpage doesn't open and it is loading. And sometime it work when I unplug and plug the cable again.
But, with my Windows 7 partition i haven't problems ... (same MAC adress with mac and windows)
It means, the problem come from my MAC OS system.... and my administrator network told me that there is a lot of ARP request from my computer ...
(i am not sure if it is from, or against my computer)
He asked me to reinstall my system...
But, it is hard just for that !
Can you help me ??
Thanks

Hello Ohio!
Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As a general rule you should not have problems browsing on your Mac. However there are times when you will have a problem on a site or two because the webdesigner made it specifically for windows and it causes problems on a Mac. Yahoo is a popular site that has this problem. I have heard a comment or two about Facebook in the past. Most people here use Safari and/or Firefox (Camino) as there browsers as these are the most popular on Mac. Often Firefox can display something properly when Safari can't. Most likely due to the fact that there is also a Firefox on pc. When you mention Internet Explorer I assume you mean on pc? As the Mac version is outdated.
I also have a PowerBook G4 and I can say that with the exception of one or two sites Safari displays everything fine. If I get stuck that's when I open Firefox (Camino though is my preference).
That's all pretty general and I'm not sure if that helps? If you haven't given these sites a run with Firefox try that and then let us know how it goes...
Thanks,
Reg

Problem? I'm not even sure what your problem is, much less whether it's a problem with the phone or the carrier.

  • 802.1x Authentication for University Network Fails After 10.5.5 Update

Hi everyone, I hope that someone might be able to help me with my problem. I used to connect to the internet through my university's network at my dorm using the ethernet connection. Even before when I was using 10.5.4 I had to do the 802.1x authentication manually after every boot.
Now that I updated to 10.5.5 everytime I try to connect it tells me "802.1x Authentication has failed", does anyone have similar problems, solutions??? This is everything the IT department's homepage has to offer: http://www.unibz.it/ict/8021x_mac1/index.html?LanguageID=EN&
    Thanks a lot!
Btw, it seems the update somehow messed up Timemachine as well, but that doesn't bother me as much as the internet connection.

    Hi,
You probably need to install a root certificate into your Mac's system keychain so that your Mac knows it can trust the University's Certificate Authority (CA).
They should be able to provide you with a file for the CA and instructions.
    cheers

  • Mac Mini Server on my university network?

    Hello,
I am a university professor and I would like to install a Mac Mini server in my laboratory to connect all my Macs (I have 4 so far). Obviously, my Macs are already connected to the Internet through the campus network (fixed IP), but since my university is an anti-Mac institution, I cannot have access to network drives and other networking goodies (we are on Novell). Anyway, that's why I want to buy a Mac Mini server to connect all my Mac and be able to share files, allowed different permissions to my undergraduate, grad, Ph.D. students, etc. plan and call meeting with iCal Server, communicate with my lab users with iChat, etc. However, I don't need email services; we use the one provided by the university.
So my question is simple : can I create my own little local network with a Mac Mini Server that will be connected to my university network/server? I am kind worried about IP conflicts and other network related problems and being called to the IT office...
    Your comments will be welcome!
    Thanks!

The real answer to this depends on two things:
    1) whether you're just trying to do this within your lab, or you want external systems to be able to get to your services (e.g. students be able to access these resources from outside the school network)
    2) whether each device in your schools' network have real-world IP addresses, or whether the network uses NAT.
If the answer to 1 is that this is only within the lab then there isn't likely to be any issue - get an IP address for your server from the network admins (which is why #2 is relevant) and you're set. The network guys would only have other involvement if you wanted to get external access working, in which case you've got to talk to them about opening holes in firewalls, etc.
If this is purely internal (or, at least, doesn't need access from outside the school network) then there isn't likely to be any problem. You could even get away without DNS, although it would be nice if you could get a sensible hostname from the DNS administrators (e.g. server.yourlab.yourschool.edu) but even without that there shouldn't be anything preventing you from running a service and having internal clients connect to it (other than policy issues, of course…). For the most part the admins wouldn't even know you're running a server.
Getting a static, non-conflicting IP address that valid for the school's network is going to be key, though.

  • Airtunes Problems on University LAN

Hi all, I realise this is not a new problem but after trying everything, including David Lovell's solution, I have been unable to solve my Airtunes troubles.
I recently purchased Airport Express (AE) with Airtunes so I could get online wirelessly in my apartment AND stream music from iTunes to my home stereo in the living room.
The apartment has an ethernet jack in the living room which I have previously been using with an ethernet cable to get online through my university LAN. The home stereo is near this jack.
I set up the AE in the living room and connected it to the ethernet jack and my stereo.
Initially, everything worked splendidly: my room-mate and I could get online wirelessly AND stream music (one-at-a-time) from iTunes on our laptops to the stereo. I have a Powerbook, he has a PC.
After a day or so, iTunes suddenly would not connect to the AE and stopped showing it in the speakers list. After trying several combinations of channels and multicasts and god-knows what else, I have been unable to get the AE to function for internet and music together again. The best it has done is either one or the other. I've re-set and re-configured several times but the AE simply won't return to its virginal bliss.
I've read that this is inevitable on university LANs but that doesn't explain why it worked at first. Would I have to buy another wireless router and link it to the AE as proposed by Mr. Lovell, or is there any way I can get the AE to do what it was meant to in the first place. I don't feel I should have to go out and spend money on another piece of gear since this one ought to do its job.
Thanks for reading this and and any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm at the limit of my patience with this wretched device.

Enabling the Airport Express router by checking "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT" doesn't "destablize the entire system". However, many university networks expressly forbid the operation of a router on their network because of the possibility that an incorrectly configured router will indeed interfere with operation of the university's network. This undesireable possibility doesn't exist with the Airport Express - nevertheless, rules are rules. Quoting from the guidelines you provided a reference to:
"Routers, DHCP servers and NAT servers are not allowed on the network because they violate numerous points in the acceptable use policy and when misconfigured, can bring down the network for entire buildings."
You cannot use the setting to "share a range of IP addresses" - that is an option not applicable to your setup. There are in fact no options you can fiddle with to achieve the result you want. You are going to have to live with the limitations:
    - enable the router and unplug the Airport Express from the university network to use iTunes streaming
    - disable the router and plug the Airport Express into the university network for internet access

  • Connection to internet problems on arrival to Europe

    Hello,
Interesting problem here. I just arrived in Switzerland and work in a lab with an non-encrypted wifi and LAN connections. My airport finds the network, and the network status says "airport is connected to the network......,. You are connected to the internet via airport". Okay, the problem is that eventhough it says this, the computer (Safari) still cannot access the internet. The same occurs when I plug in the ethernet cable. In the US there was never this issue anywhere.
However, in Switzerland, sometimes (and I am not sure why) when I configure the airport connection through Network Assistant the connection to the internet works!! But, this only happens occasionally and after many unsuccessful prior configuration attempts. It is not reliable at all. I did try to configure the LAN connection similarly, but never got a successful connection to the internet. When the connection to the internet is unsuccessful the Network assistant always says "Connection failed" although airport and internal modem still finds the network. The wireless router is a Phillips ADSL wireless base station and I thought LAN connections were universal. Any ideas? I hope this is clear enough. Thank you.

    Hi Badister,
Your not getting a network connection can be caused by a variety of things. First off, your airport extreme may be experiencing low signals, move closer to the base station and test it from there.
Are your airport settings on automatic? It could be that special configuration is required (which you've hit upon once or twice with a successful connection) that you do not know about? It is always best to contact the system administrator in cases such as these.
Finally, if you have tampered with locations at all, including the connection assistant, it is best to clear these settings and start fresh. Remove all previous locations and just leave it on automatic.
To further diagnose the problem if the above does not fix it, are you receiving IP / DNS / Gateway information? When connected via airport, check the airport settings for the above information. If any of those are lacking you may need to enter them manually, in that case, contact your system administrator.
    Good luck!

  • Could I access internet via the university wireles...

I am in the US. I just got an unlocked Nokia E72. I don't have data plan. I am wondering whether I can access internet through the university wireless, like my laptop? If I can, could anyone tell me how to set the wireless connection?
    Thank you!

It depends on how the network is setup like psychomania said.
In my school, two options exist, if your hall is within range of the wireless network, you could try connecting to the wireless network and see if it connects you.
If it doesnt then you problem would need to register your wireless MAC with the school network so they provide your mobile with access (at least that is the way it works here).
An alternative to this, wot i do is since the schools wireless network doesnt get to me and i have the wired connection, i create an adhoc wireless connection (disable internet connection sharing and allow IP set to automatic configuration)
When that is done, you bridge both wired and wireless connection, and the you have an AP.
Search for the wireless connection with you phone and you should be able to access the net thereafter.
    cheers.

  • How to connect a Sony Bravia TV to the internet through your Airport network

Since it took me a lot of time to figure out how to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the internet through my Airport network, I better share how to do it. Hopefully saving others a lot of time.
My 32EX600 Sony Bravia TV is Ethernet connected to my Mac Mini, which is part of my Airport network, together with another Mac, an Airport Extreme Base Station and an ADSL modem/router. Moreover, the Mac Mini is connected to the TV by HDMI.
Whatever I tried in the TV’s Wired Network Set-up (Auto, or Manual with manual IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS IPs), I couldn’t get it right. Cable Connection and Local Access were mostly OK, Internet Access always Failed.
The solution lies in the Sharing panel of the System Preferences of the Mac Mini. In the Internet Sharing item of that panel, you should choose to “share your internet connection from WiFi to computers (the TV in this case) using Ethernet“, and NOT (as I had chosen before and seemed so obvious) “share your internet connection from Airport to computers using Ethernet“. After that change, the Bravia Network Set-up, using the Wired and Auto options, flawlessly connected to the internet. No expensive (Sony) WiFi USB dongle needed.

I have now had a detailed reply from Sony Europe and the way to do this is to:
    1.       Press Home on the TV Setup
    2.       Use the right and left arrow to select Setting.
    3.       Use the up and down to select Network, press Enter.
    4.       Select Network Setup.
    5.       Select Wireless setup.
    6.       Select Scan
    7.       Select your network
    8.       A new screen will appear asking for entering the security key.
    9.       Enter your WPA2 key.
    10.   Select Enter.
    11.   It will take you back to the same screen asking for entering the
    security key.
    12.   Press the right arrow.
    13.   Select Auto.
    14.   Press the right arrow.
    15.   Select Save and connect.
These instructions are not the same as shown on the TV but they worked fine for me so they may help others with a similar problem.

  • Weird internet problem / ssl connection error, site loads in safari not in firefox or other way around

I really can't figure out this problem. Search the internet tried all kinds of things, nothing help so far.
I have a Macbook Pro (Lion originally installed) running on Mavericks (all latest updates). SSD installed and the DVD tray is replaced by the original HDD.
The laptop wasn't running very smooth anymore so decided to give it a fresh Mavericks install (even though I know it's not really necessary for mac, it helped, everything is much faster except a weird internet problem came up).
After freshly installing Mavericks I couldn't get into my google account anymore, just wouldn't load. Tried Safari (use this normally) and Firefox and Chrome, this last was gave a SSL connection error, both Safari and FF said the website couldn't be loaded because the server didn't respond. For Gmail I use Mailplane which is just stuck on a white page. I tried repairing the keychain, repaired disk and disk permissions, cleaned browsers, turned off firewall and antivirus (Shopos) started in safe mode, checked time settings which were all good. Nothing of this helped. I even ended up creating a usb bootdisk for Mavericks, formatted the disk and reinstalled from the start just Mavericks and nothing else, started Safari, still the same problem. As even this didn't help I figured it's not worth reinstalling all software so put back my backup.
Now I ended up somehow only being able to use Gmail normally in Firefox, Chrome still gives SSL error and Safari can load the inbox, but I can't open any messages. I get the error there is a problem with the connection. If I try in Basic HTML mode it surprisingly does work.
You would say, just use Firefox, finished...but the thing is that sometimes random websites won't load in Firefox, when I load the same site in Safari it works perfectly.
O yes, I also tried the connect to my iPhone and use the Cellular data network, then it's no problem using Gmail in Safari normally. You would say it's a router problem, but I have another Macbook Pro (just one model later running Mountain Lion) this one works perfectly with every browser. Also my iPhone does everyting logged into the WiFi network.
You can understand I really have no clue what's going on here, I don't see any logic. I can only think of a hardware problem in my Macbook, but don't see how that could cause these problems.
I hope someone is ably to help me ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • G4 and Internet problems.

Hi, I am very new to macs, in fact, before today, I only used garage band at school. So one of my friends let me borrow his G4-DA(466Mhz). And straight away I ran into a problem. The network/internet won't work. It is the normal network card that came in it, connected to ethernet, and my router is a Linksys WRT4GL. It is connected to the ethernet through one of those networking-through-the-mains things, which works fine with any computer I could test it with. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

There is usually no limit to the length of cables between the cable entry point and your cable modem, and between your cable modem and your Router, or between your Router and your first computer.
One way to re-think the connection problem is to reconsider where you have placed the components. For example, what about putting the Router next to one of the computers. Or placing ALL the components next to the computers rather than at the cable entry-point.

  • Very Strange Internet Problems

I own a MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch that I purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently upgraded to Leopard and have all the latest updates. I am from the US, and when I am home my internet works fine. However, I am on travel to Seoul, South Korea right now and am having a very strange internet problem.
As far as I can tell, the URLs that I type in to my browser are, sparodially, not translated correctly into the webpages that they are supposed to represent. This problem is probably effective 75% of the time, and the rest of the time my internet works roughly correctly. For instance, when I enter http://www.google.com, instead of being taken to the Google homepage, I am taking to the homepage of Jammin Beats DJ Service, an obscure website about a company in northern Pennsylvania. The actual URL of this website is http://www.jamminbeats.com, but when my internet is malfunctioning, 'jamminbeats' is for all intensive purposes replaced by 'google' (that is, it applies not only to the main page, but to sub pages, so "http://www.google.com/weddings" takes you to "http://www.jamminbeats.com/weddings" and etc). For most other webpages, one of two things happens. Either I am taken to the correct page but it is displayed without any images or frames (just the html text and links), or I am taken to a blank page with the header "Under Construction", which I assume is the default for a page that doesn't exist. This is why it seems as though the URLs are simply being interpretted erroneously.
This problem occurs when connecting both to the wireless and the wired internet at my hotel, and it occurs on both Safari and Firefox, so it is not a connection-specific or browser-specific problem. It may be a problem with the hotel's internet, and as of yet I have not had a chance to test the computer at another location. However, a colleague using an IBM computer has had no problems, and I am currently on a Samsung machine in the business center of the hotel and it is working correctly as well. I have searched extensively online for a similar problem but have come up empty handed, and more than anything, I am confused about what might be causing this problem. The strangest thing is that a fraction of the time, the internet functions normally, but it is usually roughly 15 minutes out of every hour, and eventually I am inevitably taken back to Jammin Beats.
I am a computer science graduate but I still have no idea what would cause this problem. At first I thought it might be a hacker, but if it is, he or she has been at it consistently for 3 days now, and only seems to be targeting my computer. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been forced to resort to the hotel's business center for checking email, doing work, etc. Thanks in advance.

I did consider that, as I was in Beijing last week and there are a number of censored sites. However, in Korea I have had problems with very basic sites like facebook, wall street journal, google, yahoo, Korean google, my hotel's webpage, etc. Further, I have successfully gotten all of these sites to load seemingly at random, and can access them without problems on other computers. The only disconnect seems to be between my MBP and the internet, not between Korean internet and the web. I have toyed around with the network settings, and although sometimes after switching from "Automatic" to a fixed connection I get some sites to work, it usually only lasts a short time and eventually the same sites stop working. I reset my cache regularly to make sure I'm not getting sent to cached sites, but this also doesn't help. Further, my Apple Mail, Skype and AIM accounts jump between being connected and disconnected randomly as well. Again, this is isolated to my own computer, which is why I'm so confused.

Scroll down and see the "Update Your Device Using iTunes" section here:
    HT4623
There is no "update icon" in iOS versions earlier than iOS 5.
The update is very large (over 1.2 gigabytes).  You need a good internet connection to download it to your computer.  Maybe you'll need to take a trip to a city to get a good enough connection.

  • Internet Problems - poor connectivity

I have a Lenovo X100e laptop with Windows 7 Professional. It's been a great computer, but when I go on the internet, it behaves as if the connection is slow or wonky, even if the connection is fast. This is especially true of video streaming, which stutters so much, it's virtually impossible to watch Netflix or YouTube or any other video streaming service. This is otherwise a great computer so I really want to fix this, rather than buy another computer.
I have used this laptop on my home network with both wifi and direct connection with the same behavior. I have diagnosed my network speed and its good, usually around 20Mps, plus I've tried this laptop in public places like Whole Foods and it behaves the same: wonky connection. I have an old Dell Latitude that works and it runs the internet great on the same network, and I've used my phone on my home wifi and it works great, so it's clearly the Lenovo.
The network adapters are 11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II and Realtek PVIe GBE Family Controller. I checked the drivers for both (using Device Manager), and they are both current. I used the "diagnose problems" function and found nothing. I googled for problems with them and didn't find much.
There is also a Qualcom Gobi 2000 listed (Wireless WAN Driver for Windows 7) under Other Devices and it says "There is no driver selected for the device information set or element." I tried updating the driver, but got an error saying "Windows could not find driver software for your device." I have no clue if this is relevant.
Also, the laptop plays video with no issues if it's a file on the local drive, like mp4, so I don't think video is the problem per se. It's the general communication with a network. Let me repeat that I don't think this is a wifi issue because I get the same behavior even if I plug a network cable in directly to my router.
Also, I have tried multiple updated browsers including Chrome, Firefox, and IE. Plus, I have run multiple virus scans and nothing is found.
I rviewed the other internet problem posts on this forum, but they don't seem to be the same problem I am having. I can get on the internet, it's just wonky. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regarding Gobi 2000:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001302 - drivers;
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS003751 - boot code utility driver needs.
Install them yourself. Four devices should appear in Device Manager.
Further steps depend of the network carrier you work with. If the carrier is Verizon or AT&T you should install and launch Mobile Broadband Activation softwate:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS001619
If you work with another carrier there is a chance you'll need additional help. Let us know.

  • New unlock iphone 4's internet problem

I got a new unlocked iphone 4, and use the straight talk unlimited data plain. But my iphone shows my carrier is AT&T, and I coulden't activate cellular data network. I don't know how to get access to 3G internet.

My iPhone 4s suddenly experienced some Internet problem starting from yesterday too. I got my iPhone 4s when it first came out. No issue at all until this happens. My Internet on"4G" (well it's actually 3G but labeled as 4G) is super slow. I can still call and text but I can't receive any messages from iMessage(which uses Internet), apps store just stay loading forever, and a webpage takes like mins to load. But everything work fine once I connected to wifi. I don't know what going on and I would know is it just me or others are experiencing the same thing?

  • Ethernet/Wireless internet problems..This is Driving me CRAZY..please help!

Alright i hope someone out there can solve my problem because i am about to throw my macbook against the wall. This is my problem:
Everytime i go on to the internet, in order for the internet to work i have to pull my ethernet cable out of the plug, plug it back in and refresh the page. The internet then works for about 4 pages on avg. and then it times out and says im not connected. In order to continue surfing on the net i have to pull the cable out and plug it back in. The wireless acts the same way. It will work and then times out. I have to turn off the airport and back on to get any internet.
The browsers im using are Safari 3.1.2 and Firefox 3.0.1 and both act the same way. My roommate has a PC and has had no problems whatsoever. Our internet comes through the wall from a plug not from a router. I personally believe that it is my computer because i have tried getting internet from the plug in his room and the same thing happens. The wireless around my school comes from different towers and no matter where im at the same thing happens. I dont believe that its the internet. Ohh and one more piece of info. My first year at school my computer gave me NO internet problems whatsoever. I bought the computer brand new in June of 2007.
If anyone knows how to fix this extremely annoying problem, please help me!! Thanks to all who answer~

    Hi
I'm getting a problem which may be related, and i've figured out some workarounds (sort of inadequate ones but at least they're something).
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: almost immediately after installing the 10.5.5. system update, my MacBook started disconnecting itself from my wireless network. i'd be working online and suddenly i'd notice that only 3 bars of the AirPort icon on the menu bar would be showing and that the internet connection was no longer there. the only way to get the connection back would be to switch airport off and then back on and it would connect again. a couple of minutes later the connection would be gone again. infuriating stuff! i checked the system log using the Apple System Profiler (from the Apple menu) and found some messages about there being too many state changes detected on the AirPort network interface and that measures were being taken to fix stuff. it's a pity i didn't save the original error message since i no longer get it, but here's one I found that's identical reported by someone else:

anyway, the "measures" seemed to be to simply disconnect me from the net, which wasn't great. now the forums mentioned various solutions, but none of them actually worked.
SOLUTION/WORKAROUND: two things seem to have made a difference. 1. i downloaded the combo 10.5.5. system updater and reinstalled it. somehow after i did this the problem would no longer happen (at least those errors would no longer occur). 2. keeping my ipod touch wireless interface switched off, because whenever my touch comes online within a minute or two the iBook disconnects from the net.
COMMENTS: (1) even now if i connect to the wireless network with my iPod, my MacBook's connection will drop - so my solution is to not connect to the wireless network with my iPod touch, which ***** because i like to read stuff in bed on the touch sometimes. (2) reinstalling the system update (the combo version) definitely helped, because before i kept getting that error message in the system log, and even if the iPod touch was switched off the MacBook would still disconnect. (3) this suggest that there were two separate problems, one to do with a corrupted AirPort driver or something of that sort (which was fixed when I reinstalled the system update), and another to do with being kicked off when the iPod touch connects to the wireless network (this problem remains).
I've replace my Linksys wireless router with a Netgear wireless router, but that's made no difference, so i'm pretty sure that the problem has to do with the MacBook - either the hardware or the software. I plan to get another hard disk soon at which point i'll do a clear reinstall of the OS, and if the problem persists then i'll know that it's a MacBook hardware problem. =(
i'll post again here in the future, but if anyone has comments or suggestions or reports of this kind of problem then your input would be highly appreciated.
